COVER STORY

A WOMAN TO WATCH IN LAKE NONA By Kim Kirsch

I

n 2006, 8-year-old Franchesca Bell-Pasquarella walked into a local inline speed skating practice and wanted to try it. Getting the proper equipment together, she began to embark on a career that would take her further than she could even imagine at such a young age. As the years progressed she skated with Olympians Brittany Bowe, Joey Mantia (both from Ocala, FL), Short Track Olympian Emily Scott (now a resident of Saint Could, FL), and her local friend and Olympic Hopeful, Briana Kramer (born in Orlando, but now calls Harmony her Florida home). Skating with these greats, and with some incredible coaching from Jaime Anderson, Greg Daily, Doug Deboy, Renee Hildebrand, Jorge Botero, and her mom Stephanie Pasquarella, Franchesca would soon find herself bringing home medals from national and world championships for inline speed skating. In fact she has been to the world championships four times and has a collection of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to show for her efforts. She has won the indoor national championships five times and has 20 outdoor national wins in various races.

In the midst of all this, Franchesca’s dream of Olympic glory grew deeper. She began adding Short Track speed skating to her training and competition line up. Coached here locally by Doug Deboy, it was evident that Franchesca had talent on ice as well as the wood and road that she skates inlines on. Through a lot of hard work and tough decisions, Franchesca has made the move to Salt Lake City, Utah where she is now training for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, for Short Track or Long Track Speed Skating. Who knows, with her dedication, talent and determination, she could be a skater in America who could win a bid on both teams. Franchesca has already represented the USA on the ice during Jr. World events overseas, and is well on her way to more World Team and World Cup team spots. Franchesca finds herself right at home in Salt Lake City with many of the same skaters that she trained and raced with right here in Central Florida. 2 Nona Woman Magazine | July 2017

Brittany Bowe and Joey Mantia are working on their second spot on the Olympic Team, while Briana Kramer is trying for her first right along with Franchesca. Be sure to catch Franchesca’s Olympic Trial races this December and January. Keep an eye on

NBC for times and dates when you can watch all the Short Track and Long Track Speed Skating Olympic Trial events. n

SEP IRAs versus SIMPLE IRAs… NOT always so “SIMPLE” By Jason Flowers CPA, CFA, CFP, EA, CTFA

S

elf-employed individuals have a number of options available to save for retirement aside from the common options of a Traditional IRA or ROTH-IRA. Two options are explored in this article, SEP-IRAs and SIMPLE IRAs. Let review some basic characteristics of both options. We will conclude with an illustration.

Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) IRA

SEP-IRAs are an ideal option for the self-employed “one-person” show. If you are the only person in the business, then you are effectively the “employer” and “employee.” These plans do not allow “employee” contributions, instead they permit “employer” contributions to all eligible employees on a non-discriminatory basis, i.e. contributions are made by the employer in a manner that does not benefit some employees in the plan more than others. Thus, these plans are not always ideal if you are self-employed with employees and have a desire to save more in your retirement account

than you fund relative to your employees. Contributions are allowed to be as much as 25% of your net earnings from self-employment up to $54,000 for 2017. The 25% limit, however, might be a potential drawback if you are trying to maximize contributions to the plan and have limited net selfemployment income as you are just starting your self-employed business but still have other taxable income (this will be illustrated below). SEPIRAs do provide significant flexibility as you are not required to contribute every year and you may vary the percentage contributed each year.

Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE IRA Plan)

Simple IRA Plans allow you to contribute all of your net earnings from self-employment in the plan up to $12,500 plus an additional $3,000 if you are 50 or older, plus either a 2% fixed contribution or 3% matching contribution (if the SIMPLE plan is through an employer).

SEP-IRA versus SIMPLE IRA (Illustration) The following illustration will demonstrate that a SIMPLE IRA plan might be a better option to save on your taxes even though the contribution limits are technically smaller than a SEP-IRA: Assumptions: You are 51 years old and employed with W-2 wages of $80,000 (and no retirement account at work) and start a side business (without employees) with net earnings from self-employment of $30,000. Your goal is to maximize contributions to your retirement account to help minimize your Adjusted Gross Income and, ultimately, minimize taxes. 1: Maximum contribution SEP-IRA 2: Maximum contribution SIMPLE IRA

= $30,000 x 25% = $12,500 + $3,000

= $7,500 = $15,500

1: AGI (SEP) 2. AGI (SIMPLE)

= $80,000+$30,000-$7,500 = $80,000+30,000-15,500

= $102,500 = $94,500

The SEP-IRA leaves you exposed to $8,000 more taxable income than the SIMPLE IRA in this illustration. Assuming a federal income tax rate of 25% you would be subject to an additional $2,000 (=$8,000 x 25%) in taxes. As your net self-employment income rises, a SEP-IRA will become the preferred route as it will allow you to save 25% of net self-employment income up to $54,000 which will exceed the $15,500 savings permitted by a SIMPLE IRA, however, just starting out… a SIMPLE IRA would be the preferred route. n

The atmosphere is kept light and friendly and many of our clients enjoy the “comic” relief from the staff.

Can you tell us a little history of the business? Myself and Rick (Victor Russell Villard) moved to Florida from NY in December of 2005. Rick trained in Europe, New York and Los Angeles. This past January we lost Rick to cancer but his talented staff carries his legacy on today. I know many people are extremely loyal to your salon. What do you attribute that degree of loyalty? They are treated more like family than clients and the level of talent from the staff in the salon is what keeps them happy and loyal. I know you support many local charities and organizations, are there any you care to mention or discuss? One charity I hold very close to my heart is Vanessa Echol’s from channel 9 news “Compasionate Hands and Hearts Breast Cancer Outreach.” Anything Else you would like me to mention or highlight? On a personal note, I would like to thank this amazing community that reached their hearts out to Rick and I during his battle with cancer. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.

MAKE YOUR MOVE, WITH A PLAN By Jeanine Corcoran

Y

ou’ve waited a long time for your dream home and now your contract has been accepted and your closing date is set, now what? It’s time to make your move, with a plan.

First things first. Will you hire a company to pack up all your belongings or do you have time to pack yourself? If you choose to hire a company to do it, be sure to be there to supervise on the packing day. Your dream home, if it is not a new home, will need to be cleaned prior to move in day. The previous owner may not leave the home immaculate. If time allows, have your home professionally cleaned including the windows. You don’t want to be placing your furniture and boxes on to dirty floors. You’ll be thankful you did that on the moving day! When the movers arrive to your dream home, have a plan. That’s right, draw an actual plan of where you’d like the furniture and boxes placed in each room. Also, plan to be the supervisor as the furniture arrives. Moving can be exciting and stressful at the same time but having a plan can help the process go more smoothly. Planning will help you settle in more quickly and what better way to help you enjoy your new home than to have a plan! n

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: MOLLY MAID OF ST. CLOUD Brand. There are over 300 locally owned Molly Maid franchises in the U.S.

Tim and Thu Hien Rasner

Can you describe the “culture” or “philosophy” with your business? It all starts with relationships. Of course we focus on great quality cleaning, but just as important to us is our approach to and delivery of customer service. We pride ourselves on the ability to provide a customized personal cleaning service and being responsive to our customers’ specific needs. We want our customers to be with us for the long haul.

Can you tell the readers a little about your company? Molly Maid of St. Cloud is a residential cleaning franchise. Each franchise is independently owned and operated. My wife Hien and I opened this Molly Maid in September of 2014. Today we have 8 cleaning teams in the field and one customer service representative in our office. What services do you offer? We specialize in recurring residential cleaning services for our customers. We also do “One Time Special Occasion” cleans as well as “Move-In and Move-Out” cleans. We can

Why should/would a resident from Harmony use your company? As mentioned before, we are a locally owned company and we actually live in St. Cloud so we have a vested interest in being the premier residential cleaning company in the area. We already have a number of customers in the Harmony area, so checking our references should be easy to do. Anything else you would like to mention or highlight? All of our teams are fully trained, bonded and insured to give our customers peace of mind. We provide a service that is guaranteed with a team of your choice arriving in logo’ed vehicles. If you need us for any reason there is always someone to take your call and handle whatever request or issue at hand. n FOR MORE INFORMATION: Molly Maid of Kissimmee, St. Cloud & Lakeland 407-498-2256 MollyMaid.com

PHOTOS COURTESY OF TIM RASNER

Can you tell us a little history of your company? The Molly Maid franchise has been around for over 30 years originally founded in Canada. We are part of the Dwyer Group of home services companies and part of the Neighborly

Why did you choose to target the “St. Cloud” area? We were offered a couple different territories from the Molly Maid franchisor. Two main factors for choosing our current territory are: 1. Osceola county, being one of the fastest growing counties in the U.S., is great for future growth for our business and 2. We wanted to live close to our office and we really like the small town feel of St. Cloud.
