including Residential and Commercial Real Estate, Immigration, Probate, Estate Planning, Business and Corporate Law, and Civil Litigation. Can you describe the “culture” or “philosophy” with your business? Our firm has always fostered a culture promoting community involvement. Our managing partner, Tim Finkenbinder, is the Chair-Elect for the Kissimmee/Osceola Chamber of Commerce, and I am currently serving as the Secretary of the Board for the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce. We also volunteer and sponsor several local non-profit organizations. Can you tell us a little history of your company? Why did you choose to target the “Nona” area? Being founded in 1928 has allowed us to develop deep roots in the community. With so much growth in the Lake Nona area, we want to focus on establishing new relationships with the residents who may not be familiar with the history of our firm.

Why should/would a resident from Lake Nona use your company? I feel that our continued presence in the community for over 85 years should instill confidence in Lake Nona residents that our firm has the knowledge and skills to be successful in this market. It’s important to know that we’re here to stay! As a woman business leader, any advice for another woman? My advice to women in business is to let your voice be heard. Too often, women choose not to give their opinion in order to avoid confrontation, but I think we all benefit when women have the courage to speak up. Anything else you would like to mention or highlight? The attorneys in our firm are always interested in speaking engagements. If the Nona Woman’s readers would like to invite any of our attorneys to give a presentation focused on a legal topic, please contact us at info@omcflaw.com. n

Medicaid, Trump, Taxes and Long Term Care Insurance… Connecting the Dots By Jason Flowers CPA, CFA, CFP, EA, CTFA

A

pproximately 43% of people over the age of 65 will spend time in a nursing home. 55% of these people are expected to spend a minimum of 1 year in a nursing home. Nursing home care costs remain the single largest out-of-pocket health care expense for the elderly. The median annual cost of nursing home care is currently over $81,000.

Long Term Care insurance will become more relevant than ever given the current proposals in Medicaid funding and the fundamental shortcomings of Medicare in providing custodial care.

You might feel that Medicare will keep you protected. Unfortunately, Medicare is not designed to provide “custodial care.” Medicare does provide 100 days of “skilled nursing care,” with 20 days fully covered and the remaining 80 days requiring a daily copayment of $161. Unfortunately, obtaining the benefit of “skilled nursing care” is not automatic if your needs only dictate “custodial care.” Medicare is estimated to cover approximately 7% of the country’s total nursing home care costs.

1. Long-Term care insurance premiums paid by a corporation may be excluded from an employee’s income.

On a more positive note, long-term care insurance provides some of the following benefits from a tax perspective:

Surprisingly, Medicaid currently provides a whopping 61% of nursing home costs. You may feel that this is your back up plan. However, with this strategy you are forced to conform to numerous requirements to be eligible for Medicaid. Notable criteria include having countable assets not to exceed $2,000, meeting income tests, potentially sharing in the cost of the nursing home while in a nursing home and potentially being subject to look back rules if you attempted to transfer your assets to qualify for Medicaid.

Current proposals by President Trump to reduce Medicaid by $800 billion are estimated to cut Medicaid funding by almost half over the next 10 years.

If you have tax questions regarding long-term care and need additional assistance in this area, please reach out to Herring CPA’s and Consultants for a free consultation at 407-647-7777 or visit us online at www.herringcpa.com.

2. Qualified long-term care benefits paid on a per diem/indemnity basis are income tax free to the recipient to the extent they are less than a daily maximum. The current daily maximum is $360 per day. 3. Long-term care insurance premiums can be paid with funds you have set aside in an HSA. This is a tremendous opportunity as you are basically purchasing the insurance with pre-tax income. 4. Premiums you pay for long-term care insurance may provide you with a tax deduction if you itemize.

5. Premiums paid on long-term care insurance may be 100% deductible (up to eligible amounts based on age) for self-employed individuals. n

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: KISSELBACK FORD T

his month we spotlight our friends and major supporter Kisselback Ford!

Kisselback Ford, (Bobby Kisselback) have supported our magazines for the past year and really help me bring the publications to you! The following is a conversation with Bobby Kisselback: What makes your business unique? Critically important is our team’s appreciation that the customer chose us. There are so many choices to buy and or service a vehicle in today’s market. We truly appreciate that we were provided an opportunity and I believe it is clearly noticed by the guest. Can you describe the “culture” at the dealership? I think we are relaxed; we pride ourselves on our team members being “nice” people and every customer leaves with a thank you. “Be real, be nice and say thank you.”

Bobby Kisselback

Can you tell us a little history on the dealership? We purchased the dealership in June of 2011, six years now. Saint Cloud was simply where the opportunity was. With that said, it has been a great location. The people in the community have been wonderful and welcoming. The market and the surrounding area is growing at a rate that exceeds many other areas throughout Florida. I know numerous people who have bought many Fords at your dealership for generations. What do you attribute that degree of loyalty? Our people. Loyalty is always about the people. I believe that our customers remember and like how they were treated. I know you support many local charities and organizations, are there any you care to mention or discuss? We pride ourselves on our ability to give back to the community. We are able to help many organizations throughout the years, but our primary focus is with the Education Foundation, the local schools and breast cancer. It’s also a family affair. My wife, Sherri, and our lab, Joie (therapy dog), spend a lot of time at Nemours and at the Edgewood Boys and Girls Ranch. Joie is a comfort to many, many kids. I am also proud to say that we just started a Facebook program where we will honor a Veteran monthly and in his or her name donate monies monthly to Hero’s and Horses. Anything Else you would like me to mention or highlight? I look forward to coming to work every day. The sales team knows their stuff and works well together. Our Service and Parts teams are exceptional. I would put our technicians up against any in the industry. They are well trained and work really hard every day. Lastly, a lot of our growth over the years has come from customer referrals. People are talking well about us, either face to face or by way of the 100’s of reviews that they are posting on the Internet. It’s awesome. Thanks again to Bobby Kisselback and Kisselback Ford for helping us bring you the publication. n Kisselback Ford www.kisselbackford.com 1118 13th Street • St. Cloud Florida 34769 407-892-KISS (5477)

FIVE SUMMERTIME PROPERTY MAINTENANCE TIPS By Jeanine Corcoran

A

s summer time approaches and children, parents and grandparents plan their vacation and summertime activities, it is also a good time to look at your home and plan on performing some maintenance to ready your property for the summer. Here are five items that need attention during our hot Florida summer: 1. Air Conditioner: Changing your AC filters monthly is a must but be sure to do a maintenance check on your AC unit. Your AC unit is working extra hard to keep you cool and there is nothing worse than having your unit break down when it is balmy. 2. Sprinkler System: Be sure to turn on your sprinkler heads to ensure they are spraying all areas of your lawn and shrubs. There is a lot of stress on lawns and shrubs with the sun beating down by foreseeing any problems before they happen. Sprinkler heads are inexpensive and easy to replace and can save you hundreds of dollars. 3. Trees: Don’t forget summertime equals thunderstorms. Take the time to look at your trees and tree limbs. Trim those weak limbs so they don’t end up falling and damaging yours or your neighbor’s property. 4. Stucco: Small cracks in your stucco happens over time. Rain gets into even the smallest hair line crack and navigate its way through the concrete and into your home. It can also cause damage to your stucco. Seal those cracks to prevent damage and costly repairs.

5. Hurricane Preparedness: Hurricane Season is June 1st through November 30th. When preparing your hurricane kit, let’s not forget about your home. Be sure to reinforce your garage doors if possible, check all windows and inspect your roof. When a hurricane is coming, be sure to take in all outside items including patio furniture and plant pots. Be prepared. For many of us, summertime is all about taking a break from our busy lives and spending time with our families. Consider spending time preparing your property for the upcoming months. Your air conditioner will need a maintenance check to work efficiently, sprinkler heads should be checked to make sure they are working properly, weak tree limbs should be trimmed to prevent damage, and stucco cracks should be sealed. Lastly, check your garage door, windows and roof as we enter into our hurricane season and your most expensive investment, your home, will have a better chance of surviving our hot summer months and hurricane season with a little help from its owner – you! n

WONDER WOMAN – A MOVIE YOU HAVE TO SEE

I

By Kim Kirsch

f you’re like most people, you remember the DC comic book character, Wonder Woman. You may also remember the television series of the same name, starring Lynda Carter. In a rumored effort to bring back the Justice League, DC comics continues (some would say begins) this quest with the story of Wonder Woman; how she came to be, grew up, trained and prepared to save the world.

Menalippe, raise her, and by the time she is a teen (Emily Carey), Diana shows a great ability to fight, but still needs more work.

To do this, DC and Warner Bros. utilized Gal Gadot as Diana of Themyscira (Wonder Woman), and tells the story in a manner that includes a lot of action, but not so much that the story is buried and hard to follow. That being said, there is some lag time between fights and the plot. This brings a more human nature to Diana, who DC changed from the daughter of Aphrodite to the daughter of Zeus.

She learns about the war from Steve and feels that it is her duty to return with him to stop the war by killing Ares (The God of War). Knowing that she can never return to Amazon, she goes with Steve to London, although Diana and Steve seem to have different reasons for going into battle.

Screenwriter, Allan Heinberg, and his storywriters take us on a journey that begins with Diana in an office during WWII where she receives a briefcase. When she opens it, the story is transported back to WW1. An 8-year-old Diana (Lilly Aspell) already shows her willingness to fight, serve and save the world. Her mother, Hippolyta, and her aunts, Antiope and

10 Nona Woman Magazine | June 2017

As a young woman, Diana (Gal Gadot) meets Steve (Chris Pine), a spy in the war, under dire circumstances. She knows what a man is, but because she was raised on a refugee island with the other Amazons, she had never seen one before.

As the story continues, Diana learns what the world is really like outside of her sheltered upbringing of the Amazon. One of the most endearing scenes is when she is outfitted with “worldly” women’s clothing. Diana and Steve meet up with a band of misfits (so to speak) to find a not-so-ordinary chemical plant so that it can be destroyed, but Diana’s main target is Ares, as she believes it is her duty to kill him so that all wars will end.

Along the way, Diana shows her strength as a demigoddess but also shows her humanity as she struggles to get through the heartache that love and loss brings, as well as her innocence in the ways of the world and the fragile nature of mankind. n Rated PG-13, 141 minutes Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner, Lucy Davis, Saïd Taghmaoui, Eugene Brave Rock, Lilly Aspell, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Ann J.
