MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS: DeROY & MICHELLE BEALLE two months’ worth of planned meals – I was so impressed. (Why can’t I get that organized!?!?!?) Before I left the interview, Roy was making fried chicken and it smelled so good!

M

eet DeRoy (Roy) and Michele Bealle. I had the privilege of interviewing them in their home at 2484 Promenade Drive. They have the distinction of being one of the first Twin Lakes residents, as they moved to this community in October 2016. Roy and Michelle have been married for 36 years. The met in the Navy and the story of how they connected is very unique! In 1979, both of them were stationed at the Naval Training Center in Orlando where they were enrolled in Under Water Weapons School. When I asked what this entailed, I learned that Roy and Michelle were learning to be “Torpedo Men!” In other words, their romance began when they were learning how to build and maintain torpedoes along with managing torpedo systems!

Roy spent 20 years in the Navy (1976 - 1996). He was stationed several places including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; San Diego, California; Jacksonville, Florida; La Maddelena, Italy; Charleston, South Carolina; Orlando, Florida; Mayport, Florida and Groton, Connecticut. During his tour with the Navy he worked on Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, Harpoon weapons, Mark 46 and 48 torpedoes, Subroc underwater weapons and LAMPS helicopters. When Roy retired from the Navy he was living in Rochester, New York. From there he went to work for the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Specifically, he worked in a Juvenile Correction Center for serious offenders. While the job was demanding and challenging he maintained a positive attitude by focusing on being not just a corrections officer but also a mentor and counselor that could touch as many lives as possible. Roy shared that he is thankful for the gift that God has given him for listening to people and providing support. Currently Roy is enjoying retirement. But I did find out that he does most of the cooking. Michelle makes out monthly menus. I actually saw 2 Twin Lakes Life Magazine | Spring 2018

Michelle has dedicated her career to nursing and taking care of people. In 1995 she graduated from Valencia Community College in Orlando as a Registered Nurse (RN). She continued with her nursing training and graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Legal Nurse Consultant specialty from the University of Rochester in 2001. Currently she works a full-time job in the radiology department at Florida Hospital East. Both Roy and Michelle thought that one of the most important things in their lives is their two daughters, Latisha and Juanita. They also have three grandchildren ranging in ages from 10 to 18. Roy shared that his greatest accomplishment was marrying Michelle. Roy, growing up in Brooklyn, New York, encountered numerous challenges. He feels marrying Michelle “saved him” and helped him achieve his dreams and goals. Michelle is passionate about being a nurse. She believes God called her to touch people’s lives, both medically and emotionally. In the short time I talked to Michelle I quickly saw the qualities it takes to be an effective nurse. She has high standards of professionalism, never-ending diligence, great interpersonal skills, excellent organization skills, and an empathetic nature. I asked Roy and Michelle to describe what they admired and loved about each other. Michelle described Roy as being dedicated to whatever he is doing. She said Roy gives 110%, practices patience, and talks too much – but it is done with love and kindness. Roy described Michelle as loving and caring, a woman who has a deep faith, and a wife and mother who gives all of herself to her family. He said he could talk to Michelle easily (even though he didn’t always want to hear what she was saying☺). As a couple, Roy and Michelle like to do many things together. They enjoy traveling and have taken several cruises in the Caribbean. Other travel destinations on their bucket to-do list include visiting Las Vegas, Alaska and Greece. They enjoy going out to the movies and are big fans of any Super Hero films. Michele even called herself a “Star Wars” geek. They like to go fishing – especially at Sebastian Inlet. Finally, attending church on Sunday and other worship activities during the week is a top priority in their lives.

If they are not spending time together as a couple, you will find Roy outdoors. He is an athletic person and these days he is enjoying his new sport of Pickelball. For the past 25 years, Michelle has been a cheer leading coach. (She cheered both in high school and college.) She has worked with all ages and has even taken teams to the national level. Currently she serves as the cheer leading coaching for the St. Cloud Bulldogs Pop Warner. Go Michelle! Both Roy and Michelle enjoy the Twin Lakes Community. They were tired of shoveling snow in New York and they felt Orlando was “calling their name” since they had lived in Orlando from 1990-1995 while Roy was stationed in the Navy. Roy likes the fact that Twin Lakes is a gated community, he doesn’t have to do yard work and he can fish in the lake as much as he wants. Michelle said that they lived in a 100 year old house in New York that had 100 year old problems. She likes the fact that her home is new and she does not have to worry about what will go wrong next! She also shared that she likes the feeling when she drives into the community, as she feels a sense of peace and serenity. It was a privilege to talk to Roy and Michelle. They made me feel very welcome in their home. They are a true example of the caring and compassionate people who live in our Twin Lakes Community. No wonder both of them serve on and help lead Twin Lake’s new Welcome Committee. —Debbie Rodgers Twin Lakes Resident Reporter

SPRING IS HERE

S

pring is here, and this past winter was a little harsher than those in recent years. Some of our plants were affected by the cold temperatures, but they are now showing signs of new growth. Along with that, many of the trees are starting to put out new leaves as well. Now that spring is here we will be getting ready to start up our weekly maintenance schedule. Beginning in April we will be mowing your yards on a weekly basis. When doing our maintenance, we do a large number of houses all at one time. Which means we will mow, edge and string trim a certain area of the community and then we will come around and clean up after all the work is done. Typically, we will spend 1 full day in each section. Many of you have been asking about the trees in your backyards. We have used 3 main types, Sycamores, Sweet Gums and Maples. These trees are considered shade or hardwood trees and are required. Each of these trees lose their leaves in the winter and sprout new leaves in the spring. The Crepe Myrtles in the front of your homes, which are considered understory trees, also lose their leaves in the winter while the Oak trees by the street tend to keep most of the leaves year-round. Over the past couple of months, we have completed several projects: • We have installed mulch borders around the houses. • We have completed our annual refresh of the mulch beds around the community. • We have applied our seasonal weed and feed to all the St. Augustine grass. • We have cut back all the Crepe Myrtles, doing this allows us to keep their size under control and allows the new blooms to be fuller in the late spring to early summer. Finally, your landscaping team truly takes pride in the work we do here, and our goal is to give you a beautiful community to live in. We hope you take advantage of this lovely spring weather and get outside and see all the hard work we have done. n

HEALTHCARE

H

ealth Insurance can be very confusing. Laws and regulations are changing at what seems to be a breakneck pace. In fact, there are changes occurring (for the better) that most are not aware of. But what the media won’t tell you about health insurance, I will. My name is Kim Kirsch. My husband Rick and I are health and life insurance brokers out of Harmony, FL. We are the local gurus for all things health/dental/life insurance. We are well versed on the laws, and the coverage that you and your family need. If you are losing coverage, or if you have never had coverage, we have a plan for you. There are hundreds of private options available (that are ACA complaint) and we have access to most of them. Finding the right health insurance plan means having the right broker by your side to do the shopping for you. We take the stress and the confusion out of the process. I hope to provide some insights over the coming months to keep you updated on law changes and how they affect you and your family. Give me a call to schedule an appointment (in person of via phone) with myself or one of our agents so that we can make sure your family’s coverage is adequate. You never know, you may already be paying too much, which is often the case. n

RSVP ETIQUETTE* By Maralee McKee, Manners Mentor

What Does RSVP Mean Exactly? RSVP loosely translates from French as “Please Respond.” It’s an easy request. It just means that the hosts are asking us to let them know whether we’re coming to their party or event so that they can plan seating, food, and anything else they need to arrange for our needs and comfort. How Quickly Should We RSVP? Within 24 hours. Yep, just one day! The same day you receive the invitation is best. A fast response signals that you’re excited to be included in the event! That’s the same enthusiasm and quickness that is kindhearted to show when responding to invitations. Can I Wait to Respond? You can, but it’s kind of like showing up late for the party. Our timely response is our outward expression of our inward consideration! n *This article has been shortened from it’s original version.

Melanoma Rates Decline for Younger People, Boomers Still at High Risk (ST. CLOUD, Fla.) — A recent study indicates public health efforts to warn younger Americans about the dangers of sun exposure may be paying off. While all forms of skin cancer have been on the rise in recent decades, a recent report issued by the Centers for Disease Control shows that melanoma diagnoses have dropped among Americans aged 15 to 44 over the last ten years, while increasing significantly among all white adults during the same time period. “These statistics are somewhat encouraging and frankly not all that surprising,” says Bettye Brown, board-certified Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner of St. Cloud Medical Group. “While today’s youth has been exposed to warnings about sun and tanning bed exposure since birth, those who are over 55 grew up in an era where slathering on baby oil to catch some rays was a cultural norm. Twenty or thirty years down the road, their cells are paying the price.” Melanoma is the third most common type of skin cancer, but also the deadliest. Each year, more than 70,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with melanoma, and more than 9,000 die from it. Melanoma is often caused by overexposure to UV rays from the sun or artificial sources

like indoor tanning beds. As of the most recent data, more than 70 percent of all melanoma cases are found in adults over the age of 55. It’s certainly not unusual for our skin to change and develop marks or spots as we age, but given the increasing rates of skin cancers in this country, we must be vigilant about protection and early detection practices. Experts recommend making sun protection – with a minimum SPF of 15 – part of your everyday routine, even when you are not engaged in regular outdoor activity. Incidental sun exposure is often overlooked as a potential risk factor. When spending any significant amount of time outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen to all areas of exposed skin, especially during midday hours when the sun is at its most intense. As for detection, experts point to the ABCDE rule for evaluating new or existing spots or moles on the body: • A for Asymmetry - one half of a mole or birthmark that doesn’t match the other • B for Border - the edges are irregular, ragged, notched or blurred • C for Color - the color is not the same all over; may include varying shades of brown or black, or sometimes with patches of pink, red, white or blue • D for Diameter - the spot is larger than ¼ inch across, or the size of a pencil eraser • E for Evolving - the mole is changing in size, shape or color There are simply no hard and fast rules about the appearance or evolution of melanomas, so it’s critical to have your skin evaluated by a qualified physician each year, and to alert him or her to any new or changing spots on your skin. If melanoma or other skin cancer is detected, it will be “staged” by your healthcare provider and options for treatment will be presented. For melanoma detected in its earliest stage, at the site of origin, 5-year survival rates exceed 98%. This reinforces how critical regular screenings and self-exams are, particularly if you are at risk due to sun exposure throughout your life. If you need a full skin evaluation, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider, or call 407-891-2965 to make an appointment with St. Cloud Medical Group Family Medicine East conveniently located at 1700 E.
