The CSSA has announced an inaugural awards programme, being delivered in association with the Cleaning Show. The awards have been developed to ‘recognise everything that shines within the UK cleaning sector great products, great systems, great contractors, and great individuals’. Participants do not need to be members of the CSSA or any other UK industry association - they simply need to be UK-based and have an interest in the UK cleaning sector...and the desire to see its continued development and improvement. The size of the entering organisation or its budget is also irrelevant – rationale, creative thinking, effective outcomes, and benefits to users are most important. The awards will culminate in a lunchtime ceremony during the Cleaning Show 2017 - Wednesday 15 March at ExCel in London - dedicated to showcasing and celebrating excellence in all the categories, allowing shortlisted and winning organisations to celebrate the hard work, dedication and success of their teams. Award categories There are six award categories in total:

• The Best New Product Award: The winner of this award will be the ‘overall winner’ from the Cleaning Show Innovation Awards. The Cleaning Show Innovation Awards will be presented at the Cleaning Show on Tuesday 14 March. From the eight category winners, the CSSA judges will nominate an overall winner, and this company will be presented with the Best New Product Award at the CSSA Awards luncheon. • The Contract Innovation Award: This award will be championed by the Cleaning and Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) who will receive all entries submitted from manufacturers of products and systems who nominate UK contract cleaning businesses that are using products or technology in the

BCC meeting looks forward to the Cleaning Show The BCC’s autumn meeting recently took place in Buxton, Derbyshire, at the home of the HSE’s safety laboratory. There was a good turnout of association members and proceedings got underway with chairman, Simon Hollingbery, being presented with a Fellowship of BICSc by the Institute’s CEO, Stan Atkins. Andrew Dunning, who is representing ICMMA after the departure of Kevin Day, was also welcomed. It was the BCC’s first full meeting since the Manchester Cleaning Show earlier in the year and members heard that it had made a healthy profit and would be returning to Event City in 2018. The success of the Cleaning Show means that BCC can offer funds back to members, and so

first on the agenda was an application from the CSSA for £5000 to help get a new awards scheme underway. John Findlater from the CSSA told members that the new awards have been designed to shine a light on the positive aspects of the UK cleaning industry - the products, contractors, people, and even the systems that often get overlooked. The application for funding was carried unanimously and the CSSA Awards will be presented at the London Cleaning Show 2017. Looking forward to the Cleaning Show, chairman Simon Hollingbery said the seminar programme looked extremely impressive and was confident visitors would be delighted with the array of

guest speakers. Member associations where once again offered the chance to share the main BCC stand and several have expressed an interest in doing so. The issue of Brexit was also discussed, with some thinking it was time the BCC issued some form of statement on behalf of the cleaning industry. All member associations are now being asked for their views on Brexit, and the matter will be debated at the next full meeting in December. Events were brought to a close with a presentation by Amy Gyte from the HSE. This was followed by lunch and then a guided tour of the laboratory, where members got a first-hand view of the work being carried out to make the cleaning industry safer.

Golden Service Awards to relaunch in June 2017 “We have decided to slightly delay the launch to give us time to review and refine the awards with a view to launching a new and exciting programme in 2017. Kimberly-Clark Professional will relaunch the Golden Service Awards programme in June 2017 with the awards ceremony to take place on Thursday 8 March 2018. Peter Oliver, general manager UK, Ireland and France, Kimberly-Clark Professional, said: “We have decided to slightly delay the launch to give us time to review and refine the awards with a view to launching a new and exciting programme in 2017.

While we remain as committed as ever to the awards, we also believe change is necessary to ensure they stay aligned with the needs of the fast moving cleaning and FM industry as well as with our own business strategy.” Kimberly-Clark Professional has hosted the biennial Golden Service Awards since 1991. In that time they have become one of the most prestigious events in the UK’s cleaning and FM

sectors, helping to benchmark high standards in the industry. In the past 25 years the awards have celebrated the many successes of the UK’s cleaning and FM industry, the dedication of those working in it, and the unique set of challenges that come from managing and maintaining such a diverse range of premises. “It has been extremely rewarding to have watched the Golden Service Awards play

such a pivotal role in the industry as it has developed over that time,” said Peter Oliver. “We are immensely proud of this event and want to ensure that it continues to support the industry and meet its ever-changing needs and challenges effectively. On behalf of KimberlyClark Professional I would like to extend our thanks to the continued support of our sponsors, partners, suppliers and entrants, and all

those who have made the Golden Service Awards such a huge success over the past 25 years. We look forward to working with you all again in 2017.” C&M is one of those partners - in fact the longest standing of all having been involved since the very start! We look forward to continuing as the Official Media Partner of the awards programme long into the future.

Jangro raises huge total for Macmillan Cancer Support Jangro has raised £48,223.03 for its nominated charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. Jangro and its national network of 43 distribution sites have been supporting the charity, which helps those affected by cancer, since 2013. Auctions, raffles, collection tubs, ‘Mankini’ events, sponsored swims, and ‘Movember’ challenges have all contributed to the running total. Funds have also been raised through Jangro donating a percentage of sales

for every single unit sold from its top five best-selling chemical products. Joanne Gilliard, operations director at Jangro, said: “It really is a pleasure to give this fantastic amount of money to such a deserving charity, which works tirelessly to support those affected by this awful illness. Cancer touches everyone at some point in their life, either personally or through a friend or family member, and I am so glad we are able to support Macmillan

The Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers’ Association’s (CHSA) annual golf day, which took place at Oulton Hall, Yorkshire, raised a record breaking £6500 for the chairman’s charity, Helping Treat Cancer Together. The evening dinner was hosted by BBC TV’s Dan Walker and its fund raising credentials attracted former Premier League and England footballer, Ian Wright. Guests were treated to a Q&A session packed with great anecdotes, with the host of Football Focus, Dan Walker, putting his own and the audience’s questions to Ian Wright. Guests also got Ian Wright’s predictions for the Premier League this season. “Our golf day is always a popular fixture,” said Shaun Chatterton, CHSA council member and the driving force behind the golf day. “With the added treat of Ian Wright on the course and giving his time for the Q&A and Dan’s skillful and very entertaining handling of the day, it’s no wonder many said it was the best ever!” The winning team came from Harrison Wipes (Stephen Harrison, Alistair Needler, Steven March, and Alex Belt), with Arco coming second and Greyland, coming third. www.chsa.co.uk Left to right: Stephen Harrison (CHSA chairman), Ian Wright, Shaun Chatterton (CHSA life vice president), and David Garcia (CHSA treasurer).

The threat - and cost - of norovirus

Winners celebrate BICSc Awards success

Stan Atkins, CEO of BICSc, reports.

It’s the highly infectious sickness bug that costs the world some £44 billion per year in lost productivity, can close celebrity restaurants as quickly as you can say raw shellfish, and can turn luxury cruise liners into plague ships. It’s norovirus - or as the tabloid press would have it, ‘the winter vomiting bug’. Norovirus is the most common cause of gastroenteritis, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s notorious for spreading like wild fire in semi closed communities like schools, hospitals, offices, and cruise ships. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after infection and include the sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhoea and fever which will typically last between one and three days. There is no vaccine to prevent it and no medicine to treat it. In 2009 celebrity chef, Heston Blumenthal, was forced to close his restaurant, The Fat Duck, in Berkshire, due to an outbreak. The Health Protection Agency eventually tracked the source to infected shellfish, but ongoing contamination kept the virus alive at the restaurant for weeks, until it eventually had to close for a deep clean, causing inconvenience for its famous owner. Cruise ships are another target for the virus, and they too make the headlines whenever there is a major outbreak. Passengers are quite understandably upset when a dream holiday is ruined this way, but tracking the source on a cruise liner is almost impossible. In truth, everybody has a part to play in preventing the spread of norovirus, but one of the most important set of people is the cleaning professionals who work in office buildings, hospitals, hotels, or other public places. They have to be fully aware of the possibility of norovirus and be equipped with the knowledge and tools to do something about it. There are four main infection control tips that should be adhered to: • The correct products: Viruses can survive on surfaces for up to eight hours so it’s vital that the right products are used against them. Cleaning with soaps or detergents and water can physically remove germs but doesn’t kill them. Disinfectants including chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and quaternary ammonium-based cleaners are best. • Clean and disinfect regularly: Regular cleaning is key to keeping the virus at bay. High touch surfaces like door knobs, desks, phones etc should get more regular attention. Having cleaning operatives who have been properly trained, moving around the environment regularly cleaning and disinfecting is the most effective way to keeping on top of it. • Hand washing: One of the most, if not the most, important points. Norovirus spreads quickly by infected people touching surfaces, food, etc. Hands are the superhighway on which most viruses travel. Hand sanitisers do help, but hands should be washed regularly with soap and hot water. • Education: Professional contract cleaning firms will train and educate cleaning staff about infection prevention and control, but that should also apply to others who use the building. People who are feeling ill with the flu or other gastro related illnesses should be encouraged not to come into work. Everybody who works in or visits a semi enclosed environment should be reminded about viruses, and the advantages of regular hand washing. The cleaning industry has made huge strides, with better disinfectants, hand gels, non-touch taps, and hand driers, but the public also has to play its part in keeping this nasty bug at bay. www.bics.org.uk 8 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

Take your places for the’toilet oscars’ The 2016 Tork Loo of the Year Awards grading has now been completed following inspection of ‘away from home’ toilets throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland. User’s needs are the basis of the Loo of the Year Awards judging criteria requiring attractive as well as functional facilities to meet all of user’s personal requirements. Hygienic services that minimise the risk of infection transfer whilst also saving energy continue to become more prevalent. There were high levels of entries across 60 entry categories with shopping centre entries continuing to increase each year. Every entry was inspected and graded by a team of trained and experienced inspectors against established criteria for each and every type of toilet. The 2016 entrants are currently being advised of the award they achieved and national and UK/Republic of Ireland awards will be presented at the presentation event on Friday 2 December at the St Johns Hotel in Solihull. Tork has signed up to be headline sponsor of the Loo of the Year awards for the second year running. Tork has a long association with LOYA and was an associate sponsor of the contest for eight years before becoming headline sponsor for the first time in 2015. “By taking on this role once again we are showing our commitment to the Loo of the Year Awards,” said SCA’s marketing communications manager, Jamie Wright. “We are also making clear the fact that Tork fully supports LOYA’s endeavours to put clean, hygienic washrooms at the top of the agenda and ensure that they are within reach of everyone. CONTRACTS

Fresh start and fair wages win contract Julius Rutherfoord has won the contract for providing cleaning services at one of London’s historic sites Freemasons’ Hall, headquarters of United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). Freemasons’ Hall is the principal meeting place for Masonic lodges in London and UGLE had a particular brief when seeking new contract cleaners for its site. Julius Rutherfoord fully understood the brief and set about delivering a winning tender. Battersea based Julius Rutherfoord was chosen for its experience and expertise in raising standards through a combination of improved supervision, specialist training and new equipment. It offered a fresh start, providing a more efficient way of increasing standards, loyalty and commitment of staff. It

fully restructured the routine, janitorial and management team, and transferred all staff from the National Living Wage to the London Living Wage. Paying the Living Wage doesn’t have to be devastating to business models. Julius Rutherfoord knows that the extra costs of pay rises can be mitigated through contract efficiencies, smarter operating practices, and the improved retention and commitment of operatives who are fairly remunerated for their work. Marcus Heap, Julius Rutherfoord’s sales and marketing director, said: “We believe that treating people well is the start of a virtuous circle: operatives have a better quality of life, we see higher rates of retention (reducing recruitment and training costs) and better at-

tendance rates. This in turn means that UGLE gets a better cleaning service from a fully committed worker.” The company also demonstrated that the British Institute of Cleaning Science methods and values are fully ingrained within the company culture, including correct use in staff and resource calculation modelling. “As a quality, family-owned London specialist cleaning company, we are thrilled to have been chosen for this significant contract and will be working with UGLE to provide the best possible service,” continued Heap. “As UGLE will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2017 we are proud to be a partner during this important period. They expect the best and we are pleased they have chosen Julius Rutherfoord.” www.julius-r.co.uk

Queen’s Hospital Graffiti removal trial partnership extended Sodexo has agreed a five-year extension with a value of £90 million to its contract for Queen’s Hospital in Romford, which is run by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT). Sodexo has worked with BHRUT for 10 years to deliver a range of technical and soft services at Queen’s Hospital, including patient dining, hostess services, portering, waste management, cleaning, retail, reception, switchboard, car parking, security, estates management, and grounds maintenance. As part of the new contract Sodexo is introducing a whole range of improvements and innovations, focusing on enhancing patient experience and releasing clinical time to care for patients. The new contract includes cleaning innovations which will help BHRUT tackle infection. The Sodexo cleaning team and the Trust’s infection prevention and control team have introduced Xenex, a UV disinfection system which uses a xenon lamp to create a germicidal ultraviolet light that disinfects surfaces using five minute cycles, meaning that rooms can be disinfected quickly between patients. The Trust and Sodexo were recently awarded the Association of Healthcare Cleaning’s Working in Partnership award for the Xenex collaboration. Simon Mills, director of estates at BHRUT, said: “Delivering the highest quality of care possible to our patients is what we’re always working towards, so it’s been great to see some of the improvements Sodexo has made recently. These things can really make a difference and give our patients a better experience of staying in our hospital.” James Taylor, CEO for Sodexo Healthcare UK and Ireland, said: “This contract extension represents some exciting new developments in patient dining, cleaning and retail at Queen’s Hospital, and showcases the way in which Sodexo is using innovation to offer a better service to patients and to develop more strategic partnership with its clients. I’m really proud of the hard work which has gone into this contract extension and I know the Sodexo team at Queen’s is excited to start delivering the new suite of integrated services.” www.sodexo.com 12 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

An innovative new method of wiping out graffiti has been put to the test at a London park. Robert Edgington and Dave Wheeler from the firm D-Drill, were called in by CVU London Highway Alliance to remove graffiti at Kennington Park as part of a wider regeneration project. An area of the park - close to the Oval Cricket Ground was being landscaped and block paved and the operatives were required to clean graffiti from a London Underground ventilation shaft that was proving to be an eyesore. D-Drill, which has expertise in diamond drilling and concrete sawing, has recently imported the EcoVapourClean machine from the USA as part of its work in the cutting and finishing of kerbstones to 45 degrees for

the Cycle Super Highway in London. But the firm has also decided to diversify into graffiti removal thanks to the technology. The machine uses semiprecious or recycled materials and creates 92% less airborne dust than a conventional sand blaster - something which was essential due to the brickwork being located near to a busy road. Also, because of the amount of water used, there is little to no water ingress and runoff as the mist created evaporates quickly. No damage is done to the mortar or brickwork. The team completed the work in four hours and the technique not only removed the graffiti but also gave the bricks themselves a new lease of life, removing dis-

colouration caused by years of wear and tear. Robert Edgington of DDrill said: “We were called in at short notice as the vent shaft wasn’t due any work but looked out of place with the rest of the park makeover. We chose to put our vapour blasting technique to the test rather than using the old technology of sand blasting due to the close proximity of the main road and a busy bus stop 25 yards away. It creates less dust and hardly any water, meaning less of an impact on the surrounding environment. Up to then, we’d been using it to blast kerbstones after they’d been cut to make sure they had the same look and texture as those around them. But we knew there was the possibility of diversifying into the removal of graffiti because of the success we have had with the removal of thermo-plastic white lines without damaging asphalt. It worked superbly. The vent shaft was blasted and washed down quickly and efficiently, removing the graffiti as well as general discolouration due to the age of the brickwork. We were very pleased with the end results and the customer was more than happy with the work as he only expected the graffiti to be removed.” www.d-drill.co.uk

OBITUARY

Angus Scott May 1966 - September 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Angus Scott, financial director at Robert Scott & Sons Ltd. After leaving school, Angus attended Herriot Watt University, Edinburgh where he studied brewing. After two years, he decided the course was not for him and began looking for new opportunities. Initially he became a qualified electrician, and started work with the maintenance team at Robert Scott’s Greenfield headquarters. In the early 90s the company started work on installing a computer system, and Angus worked closely with his IT colleagues to install, and subsequently maintain and update the system. His remit then expanded to the finance department where he was instrumental in negotiating and managing the financial operation of the company, including subsequent company acquisitions and developments, as well as heading up the day to day finance operations. Angus was a crucial part of the company’s growth and success over the last 30 years. He was an approachable, courteous man who was deeply appreciative of the hard work and loyalty of the entire company staff, by whom he will be sadly missed. The teams at C&M and Quartz Business Media extend their warmest condolences to Angus’s family, friends and colleagues. ISSA has appointed Michel de Bruin as chairman of its European Council, taking over from Andrew Dunning who has served in the post for the past three years. Michel de Bruin, who is CEO of Greenspeed b.v., has been an active advocate of ISSA over the past few years, first as the representative on the European Council for the Benelux region and latterly as vice-chair. “I am truly honoured to take on the role of chairman,” said de Bruin. “My own commercial background in the industry has helped me understand what the members need or want. From my richly-rewarding involvement with the association to date, I also know the variety of services, resources and connections that ISSA can offer. I therefore look forward to being the bridge between current and future members, their businesses and the ISSA.” The new chairman says he has three main goals for his time as chairman. “First will be to bring the world of cleaning together through organising network events for members and potential members at both a regional

Quality across the spectrum

The leader of a business and networking association in the Solent region has stood down after completing her year in charge. Luzia Holloway, chairman of the Executive Association Solent (EAS), handed over the reins to successor, Katie Young. Holloway, founder and managing director of Hampshire-based Cleaning Operations UK, passed the baton to Young, a director at insolvency specialist Peter Hall, during the association’s monthly meeting at the Chewton Glen Hotel in New Milton. Holloway, an EAS member since 1998, said: “I had a great time. It was good to give a fresh approach and, having been a member for 18 years, I’ll still be there for a few more years to come...Katie is fantastic and I think she’ll be great in her new position.” and international level,” he said. “My aim is to get the members more connected with each other, jointly discussing and strategising the kind of trends, challenges and business opportunities that are common to all in our industry. These events will also give the association the chance to showcase the many tools and resources that ISSA offers to help its members develop their business.’ He also wants to promote ISSA, and the professional cleaning sector to other industries, such as leisure or foodservice, where hygiene and cleanliness is of paramount importance. “My third goal is to freshen up and invigorate the cleaning industry by making it an attractive career choice for students and other talented individuals,” he continued. “Our industry has so much to offer and young people must be made more aware of this. They should understand that our industry can offer a real and desirable career path and that it presents such a fantastic opportunity for them to develop their pro-

fessional, inter-personal and life skills.” De Bruin also thanked his predecessor, Andrew Dunning, and said: “I want to thank Andrew for the fantastic work he has done for ISSA Europe leading the council over the past three years. He has lead the council through some interesting and exciting times and is universally respected for his leadership and management skills.” ISSA director of EMEA services, Dianna Steinbach, said: “I am delighted to welcome Michel to the position of chairman of the ISSA European Council and look forward to working with him. His energy and passion for the industry will be invaluable as we make ISSA more active and visible throughout Europe. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Andrew Dunning for his contribution and commitment to ISSA during his time as chairman of the European Council. He has been a wonderful ambassador for the association. He will continue to represent ISSA and our UK members in his new capacity as the ISSA Industrial Cleaning Machinery Manufacturers Association (ICMMA) representative to the British Cleaning Council.”

BRITISH CLEANING COUNCIL

BCC grants...and the importance of the Cleaning Show

By Simon Hollingbery, chairman, British Cleaning Council. The London Cleaning Show 2017 is now firmly on the horizon and everyone at the BCC is looking forward to what is expected to be an even bigger and better occasion than two years ago. The forthcoming exhibition at the Excel will be the third big cleaning trade show in as many years, and it marks a real turn around after the

disappointing 2013 show at the NEC in Birmingham. The move to the Excel in 2015 was the shot in the arm the event needed and its success paved the way for this year’s regional cleaning show at Event City in Manchester which will return in 2018. A successful Cleaning Show is not only good for the UK cleaning industry as a whole, it is also important for the BCC, as we plough any profits back into the industry in the form of grants, to help new initiatives get off the ground. The annual budget for these grants is £20,000 and we can offer individual grants on a sliding scale of up to £10,000, if the proposal impresses other Council members. The grants programme is available to all member associations and in the past few years we’ve been able Contact details

offer awards for a number of worthwhile ventures. In 2013 we helped to fund a new safety scheme from the Federation of Window Cleaners. The SAM scheme is now becoming recognised in the sector and is regularly being used to prove to local authorities and other organisations that the service provider has successfully completed a robust safety course. Another grant award we were delighted to make was to the British Toilet Association to develop a UK Toilet Map app for mobile phones. This innovation came online earlier this year, and with further sponsorship from Mencap and the Changing Places Consortium, is growing all the time. The map shows the location of public toilets and highlights those with enhanced facilities for the handicapped

or those with other special needs. This summer Keep Britain Tidy asked us to sponsor an event in the Houses of Parliament to recognise the volunteers who had taken part in the ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign. Council members felt it was important that the British Cleaning Council should be linked to such a high profile national anti litter campaign, and so we were delighted to help KBT. Also this year we were able to provide funding for a special conference on the new REACH regulations. It was organised by two of our members, BACS and CHSA, and saw industry professionals from across the UK gather to watch presentations and share information on this vital safety matter. The Council is always actively encouraging members

to come forward with innovative ideas and proposals that might require funding. The requirements are reasonably broad, but applicants have to be BCC members and the proposal has to promote or enhance the UK cleaning industry in some way. At our most recent Council meeting, held at the HSL (Health and Safety Laboratory) in Derbyshire, members agreed funding for a new awards scheme for the UK cleaning industry. The CSSA Awards have been designed to recognise businesses of all shapes and sizes that make a positive contribution to the industry, and these new awards will be presented at the Cleaning Show in March. On a personal note, I would like to thank BICSc for bestowing on me the Fellowship of the Institute at the recent BICSc AGM and dinner.

It’s clear a lot can be done to prevent and reduce the environmental impact of cleaning in manufacture and design. To compensate for the final residual impact, the unavoidable CO2 emissions produced during operation, Kärcher has launched eco!zero. Earlier this year Kärcher became the first company in our industry to enable its customers to offset their scrubber drier emissions. This accredited system calculates working life CO2 emissions for each machine and allows customers to opt to compensate for this through supporting an internationally recognised Water Aid project. Participating customers receive labelled machines and a carbon neutral certificate.

SMALL & MIGHTY: Li-Ion battery technology delivers impressive runtimes and opportunity charging. Above L to R: BD 30/4, BR 45/ 22 C.

Size matters

SIZE WITHOUT COMPROMISE: There is a model for you - compact, walk-behind, step-on or ride-on classes all deliver excellent results just choose the scale to suit you. Modern scrubber driers are lightweight, agile and resource efficient. Above: the new BD 43/25; Left: B 120; and Below left: the new B 200 R.

• Micro models - you can fit mechanised cleaning into your regime (and your cleaning cupboard): Narrower than a standard office keyboard, micro scrubbers and sweepers are discreet, quiet, agile and always ready to use - ideal for quick clean ups and small, heavily furnished areas. And they become cost effective surprisingly quickly. Also known as an electric broom, a KM 35/5 Micro Sweeper pays its way in areas as small as 50 sq m covering up to 617 sq m on a single battery, while Kärcher’s newest and smallest disc scrubber, the BD 30/4, delivers an impressive 900 sq m/h with Li-ion batteries ensuring they’re always available and can be charged on-demand. • Compact Walk-Behind - small packages can deliver big performance: Agility is key to productivity in the compact class. Kärcher’s F1-inspired KART technology means users can drive the machine rather than push, with a 200° head rotation allowing impeccable corner cleaning. The latest model in the range, the BR 45/22 C maintains the compact dimensions and light weight of its smaller siblings thanks to Li-Ion batteries, which also provide a 30% increase in performance making it ideal for coverage up to 1800 sq m/h. • Walk-Behind and Step-On machines there is an effective alternative to ride-on

SWEEPING SUCCESS: From the micro to the macro - maintain a safe, clean, clear and dust-free environment with innovative sweeping solutions. From L to R: Kärcher’s mighty new B 300 combi machine sweeps, scrubs and dries in one; the KM 35/5 and KM 70/20 may banish the broom forever; and the all-weather MC 130 City Sweeper. 18 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

machines: Don’t let the size put you off. Traction drive makes large tank capacity machines agile and user friendly providing large area coverage of 3600 sq m/h for scrubbers such as the B 120 and 4725 sq m/h for sweepers like the KM 85/50 W. Stepon scrubber driers further bridge this gap, providing the productivity of a ride-on machine with the footprint of a walk-behind. Alongside excellent safety and visibility they excel in multi-story environments as they fit easily into standard lifts with area performance of 3000 sq m/h for the B 95 RS. • Ride-On - big machines aren’t costly, especially when you sweep, scrub and dry in one: Kärcher’s new micro ride-on, the BD 50/70 Classic, is just 590mm wide yet provides 2500 sq m/h ride-on performance, for a walk-behind price tag. At the opposite end of the spectrum, covering up to 16,550 sq m/h (that’s 2.5 international football pitches), the latest combination machines scrub and sweep in one working step doubling productivity. Kärcher’s new B 300 combi machine delivers best-in-class area coverage with a comparatively tiny 1755 mm working width. • Multi-taskers - some hardworking machines perform double duty, saving time, training and space: As well as combination machines, and scrubber driers that can be configured differently for different zones, compact outdoor sweepers will keep paths, driveways and carparks clear of litter and leaves and can also be used for clearing snow. Kärcher’s KM 80 covers 680 sq m/h. In more extensive grounds, manual litter picking, sweeping, mowing and snow clearing duties can all be replaced by one single compact all-season vehicle. The MC 130 covers 24,000 sq m/h and features quick change attachments. www.karcher.co.uk [1] Clean Sweep is a Kärcher Group company and provides UK-wide next day ‘spot hire’ up to five year all-inclusive contract hire: www.cleansweephire.co.uk. ‘Game-changing’ machines on the Horizon robust perception system therefore allows safe operation within multiple unstructured environments. All models will provide both manual and automatic modes. The CopyCat mode records a normal cleaning pattern for the area in question, allowing the same cleaning pattern to be ‘replayed’ when the play button is activated. The ‘fill in’ mode allows an area to be outlined before the machine utilises an advanced algorithm to work out the best, most efficient way to independently clean the specified area. With only three buttons the models are very easy to use with minimal training required for operation. Both driverless modes free up cleaning operatives for manual, ad-hoc jobs in more unstructured environments such as busy offices.

The Nilfisk Group has partnered with Carnegie Robotics, a leading provider of advanced robotic sensors, to develop a ground-breaking range of autonomous cleaning machines under the pioneering Horizon Program. The first technologically advanced Horizon model is due to launch in Spring 2017. The Global Horizon Program Nilfisk’s Group Global Horizon Program has included hundreds of hours of customer interviews and workshops designed to understand customer requirements and real applications across the world. The outcome is, according to the company, the best performing, most productive, safe, self-operating, driverless cleaning machines which heralds a new era for commercial cleaning. The range of 2 in 1 autonomous cleaning machines provides ‘unprecedented precision’ via a series of sensors, lasers and software programs that are currently used in the military sector for land mine detection in addition to other commercial applications and agriculture.

The Morclean range of scrubber driers includes cordless equipment - either petrol or battery alternatives to traditional models. Whereas previous models may have restricted versatility and freedom of movement, it is Morclean’s experience that cordless versions are now taking prominence and it’s becoming a rarity for plug-in versions to be selected. With the continuous development in floor care machines, these heavy and bulky pieces of equipment are now improving in design and are easier to manoeuvre around tighter spaces. Machines now come equipped with fully adjustable handle systems and brush-assisted traction which helps make lighter work of big jobs. There is also an increasing pressure on companies to be eco-friendlier and using battery powered alternatives supports the drive for businesses to be greener. Battery machines operate on far less energy than their petrol alternatives - Morclean battery powered machines on average run on 24v when in use, whereas those with a cable can use up to 240v. Morclean supplies a broad range of scrubber driers and sweepers that suit a host of applications. They are available with varying brush sizes and methods of use, including pedestrian and ride-on. The smaller machines are useful for compact applications and where flexibility around corners may be required. Alternatively, the machines with bigger tanks are ideal for larger applications. www.morclean.com

Simplicity, reliability...and the support you need Numatic’s all new TwinTec range has been re-engineered focusing on three core values…reliability, durability and usability. The range comes complete with all the support you would expect from the UK’s largest commercial cleaning equipment manufacturer. Kevin Andrews, Numatic International’s FloorCare manager, reports. The use and application of scrubber driers has grown enormously over the past few years as models have evolved and awareness of good cleaning practices has developed worldwide. With this increase comes a demand for a first class service package, from the buying process to commissioning in the field, user training, and a support facility that reflects the investment. Only when we involve the client from the start and design a tailored service and training programme can we ensure that equipment is used to the best of its capability. Not that everyone needs their hand holding, of course, but the cost savings to the client can be enormous - operators who are confident in using and, more importantly, maintaining their own equipment will increase efficiency and productivity. From the very start, we discuss and develop training and installation programmes, ensuring we understand the needs of our 22 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

customer and, ultimately, the end user. A customer centred approach is vital for the success of any installation programme. Having a ‘tool-box’ of resources allows us to select the right approach to fit the situation from visual training aids to online video resources. Training offers further benefits operators feel more involved and engaged from the very start. The equipment hasn’t just been imposed on them, they feel valued and empowered, making their responsibility for the equipment a positive driver. These days, knowing our product isn’t the only responsibility. With myriad industrial floorings now available, be it polyurethane screed, solvent free epoxy resin or an anti-slip finish, the trainer will need to be well equipped, experienced and capable of adapting to any environment. Numatic demonstration and training teams are kept up to date with innovations in the industry from pads to chemicals to flooring and can

bring many years experience in solving cleaning problems both here in the UK and across the world. Your five point guide to selecting the right scrubber drier Selecting the right scrubber drier can be a confusing choice with a long list of options. To make things easier here’s five factors to consider when selecting a scrubber drier: • Battery or cable will be the first choice, with each option bringing it’s own advantages. • A scrubber drier often has multiple users - simple intuitive controls allow all users to quickly get to grips with operation. • Manoeuvrability is king when it comes to compact scrubber driers where narrow aisles, fixtures and fittings all need to be negotiated. • Filling and emptying. You’ll want a scrubber drier that is ready to work with no fuss, just simply fill and go. Emptying is something not to be overlooked too - a simple dump hose is the best option allowing emptying of dirty water into a drain, gully or bucket, avoiding pouring contaminated water into potable sinks. • Don’t forget the back up! When ordering new consumables, asking a technical question, servicing or indeed training you’ll want a manufacturer that can offer it all. www.numatic.co.uk

Tracking improves machine and fleet performance The recent UK launch of its Taski Intellibot robotic scrubber driers has been accompanied by announcements from Diversey Care covering machine tracking innovations. These technologies utilise newly developed capabilities to monitor machine location and status in real-time over the emerging Internet of Clean. In doing so they enable remote management and diagnostic services that allow operators to oversee individual machines and fleets more efficiently and reduce significantly the overall cost of cleaning. All Taski Intellibot machines are equipped with IntelliTrak, a unique management information and machine tracking system. This records all machine operations and movements to provide a complete audit including operator ID, date of use, start time, machine location, cleaning time, performance issues, and routes/areas cleaned. Information and reports can be accessed over the Internet of Clean using local WiFi or secure on-board SIM card. Authorised engineers can diagnose and deal with many issues as well as re-programme the machine with no need for a service call. The new Taski IntelliTrail system offers similar capabilities but can be installed on the majority of the Taski range, including larger pedestrian-operated and all ride-on scrubber driers, and compatible machines from other manufacturers. The system monitors a wide range of key performance indicators including geographical position, total operating hours, average working hours, under- and over-

Two in one hard floor and carpet scrubber drier Why choosing the new CT 15 Roller scrubber drier? According to its manufacturer, IPC, the answer is very simple: it is the most productive and efficient hard floor and carpet walk-behind machine in its segment. CT 15 Roller has good suction and drying powers, whether moving forwards or backwards. It is not equipped with a common brush, but with a cylindrical brush that, by rotating and pressing on the bristles, collects even the smallest debris. Two blades, one on the front and the other on the back of the brush, offer excellent drying performance. The front layout of the machine has been designed to minimise the wall-to-wall distance, thus enabling easy cleaning of corners, and a large tank gives the machine a run time of up to 30 minutes. A powerful battery provides for up to 1.25 hours of work when using the Eco programme. All models feature DBL battery charger technology (doubling the expected battery life), yellow touch points placed on components that require daily maintenance, and a powerful three stage vacuum motor. All parts of the machine subject to wear, such as the roller brush, can be removed easily and replaced without tools. The machine features a unique automatic transportation wheel system (patent pending) for easy movement without brush removal and an injection/extraction carpet kit which can easily convert the scrubber drier into a soft floor cleaning machine. Additionally, the completely foldable handle enables operators to reach under tables or hospital beds. www.ipcworldwide.com

SPECIAL REPORT

For those who want to clean, the future’s bright In 1909 Morris Rosenberg started a one-man cleaning business in San Francisco, California. With an initial investment of $4.50 to buy a bucket, sponge, mop and broom, he made a profit of $3.50 on his first day in business. David Donovan, soft services director (south) at facilities services provider ABM UK, tells the story of success in the cleaning industry, and highlights the advantages of a career in this sector.

Science (BICSc) mean that the industry reflects the recognition and accreditation that has previously tempted would-be cleaners away from the industry. I’m not suggesting that pay is the only motivator for people when it comes to work, but I think you need to get the issue off the table before anything else matters. Government interventions on the national minimum wage and, more recently, the London living wage have put cleaning on a level with other roles within the facilities services sector. It’s not that pay is a pull factor, but it is no longer a barrier. A people business

Today, ABM is a global facilities solutions provider employing over 100,000 people in 30 international locations serving over 20,000 clients. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, had revenue of US$ 4.9 billion in 2015 and was recently named in the Fortune 500 list of the largest US-based companies. Rosenberg probably never imagined that a cleaning operative could go so far but, while stories like his are still the exception, the prospects for cleaning operatives are better than ever. With improvements to pay and professionalisation over the past decade, cleaning operatives now have a platform to build long and diverse careers. In for a penny, in for a pound There is one question that anyone must be able to answer before they can think about the long-term prospects of cleaning: do I really want to do this? Let’s be really honest, this is not glamorous work. I’m speaking from experience. After starting out as a jeweller I had 10 months working at a Spanish nightclub following a hold-up at my shop. I arrived back in the UK with no idea about what to do next and I started out cleaning toilets. I didn’t make a conscious decision to become a cleaning operative but once I got my job, I committed to it. As unpleasant as it was, I decided I’d do it as well as I possibly could. A lot of people give cleaning a try. For some, they have another trade and the 24 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

work dries up so they move into cleaning. For others, it’s a choice they make only in the absence of other obvious options. Whatever attracts them initially, one thing divides those who make it and those who don’t. In summary, it’s attitude. A humility that accepts it is dirty work, but important work. And a commitment that shows they really want to do the work. It might not be anyone’s first choice of career path but once they have made the choice, they have to commit. To be successful, you have to be in for a penny, in for a pound. The professionals By raising cleaning and cleaning operatives to a level of pay, training and certification that reflects other facilities services disciplines such as security, the industry can now promise longer, more varied and ultimately more interesting careers. When I first started managing teams, I had people leaving the cleaning profession. Often, it wasn’t actually about the type of work or the money. Many of them would take a pay cut but for them it was worth it because the certificates they could gain would be recognised across the industry. As much as anything I think it was about having a sense of progression and a feeling of pride in their development. When I look back, I think cleaning needed that more than any other profession. Now, the services and training provided by the British Institute of Cleaning Service

People always seem surprised when I explain that cleaning is a people business. When I look back, it’s probably the people skills that I learned during 10 months in the nightclub that have been most valuable to me throughout my career. The nature of the role has changed over the years and development plans for ambitious cleaners must now include people skills development alongside the technical components. They can’t afford to be only cleaning specialists. Instead they must be customer services experts who happen to have a specialism in cleaning. At ABM we benefit from a diverse portfolio of business and work with our experiential marketing company, Blackjack Promotions, to deliver in-house customer services training. If you meet an ABM cleaning operative in a shopping centre they will be able to give you information on what’s available, talk you through the deals of the day and walk you to the store you’re trying to find. These skills serve cleaning operatives well as they enter middle management and, later, senior management. Contract managers and operations directors must maintain relationships with clients and staff across any number of hard and soft services. Cleaning is a humbling choice of career path and there isn’t space for egos in a toilet cubicle. You learn a humility that serves you well, no matter who or what you’re dealing with. More like Morris 10 years ago, cleaning was considered a second-class career. Today, cleaning is on a level with other facilities services. While that’s a major step forward, cleaning operatives shouldn’t limit their ambitions to cleaning. The unique nature of the role demands and develops people and customer services skills that can propel cleaning operatives into leadership roles across the wide range of facilities services on offer at businesses like ABM. No longer a dead-end job, cleaning can be the start of big things as long as you, like Morris, are prepared to start with the dirty work. www.abm.co.uk

SPECIAL REPORT

Cleaning up after the flood Luke Rutterford, technical manager at Rentokil Specialist Hygiene, offers advice and practical tips on how best to respond to the aftermath of flooding. During last winter, particularly in northern regions of the UK, we witnessed the vast devastation that flooding can cause. Floods caused by rain and river breaches, as well as flash and coastal flooding, are all unwelcome and pose immediate dangers, but the biggest risks to health usually come after the water subsides. The initial shock from experiencing a flood situation can easily mask important risk factors that are essential to consider after your business has been flooded. Immediate risks • Drowning: The risk of drowning in deep flood water outside is an obvious risk. Drowning inside a property may sound dramatic and unlikely, however past cases demonstrate that - particularly with the very young and the elderly - drowning inside a property during a flood is a very real risk. • Electrocution: Never go into a flood-damaged room, or a basement filled with water, until the electricity company or licensed electrician has ensured the supply is disconnected. Even if the electricity and lights are out, there is a risk that you can still be electrocuted. 26 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

• Contamination: The main health issues that originate from any type of flooding arise when there are large water volumes that overfill sewer systems, cesspits, and septic tanks and thereby force the release of their contents back to the surface waters. The release of high levels of pathogens into the immediate environment via flood water can lead to wide spread contamination, potentially causing sickness and disease. The worst flooding to encounter is when a property is directly back-filled from the sewer, often through overflowing toilets because the contents are highly concentrated with obvious contamination. This risk of back-flow can be lessened with a simple and cheap non-return valve that, when not keeping your business flood-free, can also serve the purpose of preventing rats coming up from the drains. Managing the clean-up process The clean-up process can only begin once the water levels have subsided. The three key considerations to take in restoring flooded premises are to sanitise, organise, and optimise the affected areas. Sanitisation, through ultra-low volume

(ULV) fogging and the use of high-level disinfectants, is critical to avoiding the spread of mould, fungi, and pathogens. Pathogenic or disease-causing bacteria, as well as other microbial pathogens, are often found in floodwater that has emanated from sewers and septic tanks. Because they contain faecal content that includes intestinal and bowel bacteria, as well as bacteria from dead animals and parasites, these floodwaters can spread viruses and infect those who come into contact with them. Common pathogens that are found in the water include Escherichia Coli, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium, Giarda Chronic, Shigella, Clostridium Tetani, and Leptospirosis. The pathogenic risk associated with floodwater can cause serious illness, so it is important to regularly wash hands and wear protective clothing throughout any clean-up. Organisation is also a key part of cleaning up after a flood, particularly for businesses. Waste items that are broken or destroyed need to be carefully disposed of, including defunct electrical goods and any surfaces or items made from plywood, chipboard, and plasterboard - which swell up with water penetration. Before these are disposed of, it is advisable to disinfect the property by fogging to sanitise surfaces. This will keep mould and fungi at bay, while deactivating bacterial pathogens - and at the same time preventing the risk of contact with pathogens from whoever is handling the removal. The removal of items from a property will Continued on Page 28.

Running cost efficiency drives hand drier launch Airdri has developed a jet drier to meet market demand for fast hand drying with low power consumption, low noise output and reliability in operation to drive down running costs. The Quantum jet drier is the latest in Airdri’s hand drier range. The Quantum runs on only 200 watts to produce a highpowered fast drying experience. By comparison, most jet driers require 1000 watts or more to run at full power. More uniquely the Airdri Quantum has been designed with a universal voltage of 100v-240v making it immediately suitable for almost any installation in any location. Group head of drier sales and marketing projects, Trudi Osborne, said: “Developing hand driers that are inclusive to everyone is a

Evogen: changing perceptions in the FM sector

leading Airdri design policy. The young, elderly, those who are hard of hearing, or who are on the autistic spectrum can find the noise emitted by some hand driers very distressing and off-putting, so we’ve made sure that the Quantum has one of the lowest noise levels in its class while still maintaining its exceptional performance. In addition to considering its

sound level we have also ensured that the drier complies with the ADA disability requirements making it ideal for disabled facilities and washrooms limited in space. It really is a jet drier for everyone.” The requirement for high performance combined with ethical features such as inclusivity and environmental integrity is a growing trend among building owners and managers. The Airdri Quantum is designed to deliver on all levels without sacrificing its fast-drying performance. It takes on average just 13 seconds to dry hands. The Quantum also has the additional benefits of an impressive lifespan, a threeyear warranty, and is UL, GreenSpec, Quiet Mark, RoHS, and CE approved. www.airdri.com

Genesis Biosciences is aiming to change the perception of biological technology used in the facilities management industry with its Evogen Professional product range. The microbial range of cleaning products has been developed using ecobenign chemistry and specific Bacillus strains in order to create strong performing and environmentally safe solutions for customers. Dr Emma Saunders, general manager of Genesis Biosciences, said: “Biological products have been available on the market for several years, however, feedback from the facilities management industry has been that the products are expensive, rarely live up to their claims and do not demonstrate a step forward to the customer. With Evogen Professional we want to change that perception.” Dr Saunders continued: “A crucial part of what we’re trying to do at Genesis is change the perceptions that facilities management contractors have of biological cleaning products. I think people are often put off at the thought of using bacteria-based formulations to clean facilities, but our research and results for clients proves that our products carry a huge number of benefits over harsher chemical cleaners." www.genesisbiosciences.co.uk

Cleaning up after the flood Continued from Page 26. leave mud, sewage, and detritus. It is important that mud is removed from both sides of a wall in equal measure to avoid any destabilising of structures. Once dirt has been removed, a rinse down and fogging to sanitise the area is recommended before the area can be left to dry out. Being organised about the clean-up operation and establishing the correct order of processes is vital in order to minimise personal harm and speed up the restoration process. Environmental optimisation of the affected area to reduce the spread of mould and fungi also needs to be a consideration. Toxic fumes and gases from sludge and detritus, including hydrogen sulphide, can accumulate and circulate if the air is too humid during the drying-out process. Be cautious of running diesel and petrol generators inside. Carbon monoxide fatalities during flood clean-ups have been recorded, so it is imperative to ensure adequate ventilation by employing air rams or other methods of forced ventilation. Using dry heat to treat the flooding clean-up is also essential to avoid humidity and creating favourable conditions for bacteria to grow. At all stages of the flood clean-up, having specialists undertake the work can give you peace of mind that health and safety are at the forefront of what’s going on. www.rentokil-hygiene.co.uk 28 l NOVEMBER 2016 l www.cleaningmag.com

Welsh NPS specifies CHSA Accreditation Scheme The National Procurement Service for Wales (NPS) has called on the CHSA and its independent inspector to support its ‘refuse sack tender process’. As part of the NPS tender evaluation process, the CHSA’s independent inspector, Martin Yates, tested samples of the domestic refuse sacks and recycling sacks submitted under Lots 1 and 2 of the NPS tender, to ensure they matched the specified requirements. The NPS wanted to ensure ‘fit for purpose’ products were obtained. Mike Stubbs, chairman of the CHSA’s Manufacturing Standards Accreditation Schemes, said: “...We’re particularly delighted the NPS, as part of its qualification process, asked bidders if they were CHSA accredited and, if not, would be willing to become a member of our Accreditation Scheme if awarded a place on the Framework.” www.chsa.co.uk

Toilets cleaned without spending a penny

Left to right: Dave Crabtree, Airedale Chemical driver; Cllr Michael Outhwaite; Chris Chadwick, sales director at Airedale Chemical; and Paul Lundy, product warehouse manager at Airedale Chemical. Volunteers from chemical company, Airedale Chemical, have rolled up their sleeves to bring a sparkle back to its local public conveniences with an industrial-strength deep clean. The Yorkshire-based chemical company has pledged to use its specialised cleaning products and expertise to bring a new lease of life to the public toilets in its local area, Cross Hills. It will regularly provide an intensive clean-up as part of its commitment to giving something back to its community. A powerful product known as Airoscour TFR was used for its ability to remove deeply imbedded dirt and grime, as recommended by the technical advisors at Airedale to provide the most effective disinfection of the toilets. Airedale Chemical will return to the site every six months without charge to ensure that the standards of cleanliness are upheld for residents and visitors to the town. Chris Chadwick, sales director at Airedale Chemical, said: “Cross Hills is our town so it’s only right that we do what we can to help. To provide a really thorough deep-clean of the public toilets seemed like the perfect way for us to do something for Cross Hills which would benefit everybody and boost the experience of visitors. We’ve got the knowledge and the products to make sure the Cross Hills Main Street toilets are a public convenience the whole community can benefit from and be proud of.” Councillor Michael Outhwaite from Cross Hills Parish Council added: “We’re delighted that Airedale Chemical has offered to bring these toilets up to standard again. Over time they had become a little dirty but now they’re clean again and we’re really grateful to the people at Airedale Chemical for their generosity and hard work. They’ve even cleared away all the rubbish from the car park while they were here.” Airedale Chemical recently set up the Airedale Foundation to provide support to local groups and charities in the area with worthwhile projects that make a difference to its immediate neighbours and communities. www.airedalechemical.co.uk

Cromwell appointed to NPS framework Leeds based Cromwell Polythene has been named as a preferred supplier of specialist waste management and recycling sacks to the National Procurement Service (NPS), the first cross-sector collaborative framework for the Welsh region. The company has been awarded a place on the waste disposal bags framework for three product categories - domestic and commercial refuse bags, compostable liners and miscellaneous waste sacks, together worth a potential £13.5 million. Cromwell’s managing director, James Lee, said:

Hugh Crane opens new showroom facility Hugh Crane (Cleaning Equipment) Ltd held its open day recently at its refurbished site at 148 Station Road in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. The multi million pound investment sees the business strategically placed to meet the ever increasing demands from customers along the A1 corridor. The new showroom and national training centre was officially opened by Steve Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgshire. He praised the reinvestment in the business and thanked the company for its continued support and expansion of the site where they have built a loyal client base over so many years. Jim Saunders, manager of the branch near Peterborough, said: “We have been operating from the site since October 2001 and when the option of acquiring the site next door became available in 2014 we decided that strategically it was the right time to expand. Over the last few years we have seen a large increase in companies investing in the area to make the most of the excellent transport links. The central location and the demand for warehousing has seen an increase in the demand for state of the art cleaning equipment. Over the last two years a large amount of investment has been made in the site and we now have one of the largest cleaning equipment showrooms in East Anglia along with a dedicated national training centre. Customers can now visit the site and demo the equipment before purchasing which we see as a major advantage.” www.hughcrane.co.uk

“While being appointed to the framework is in itself a significant achievement, we are very much aware that the NPS’s 73 customers are at liberty to award contracts either directly, by undertaking a desktop analysis of framework rates, or to undertake a further competition against their specific requirements. Having now been nominated by most of the major frameworks in the UK - and gained significant incremental business as a result - we are confident that with this appointment we can similarly reinforce our strong market position in the Welsh public sector.”

Launched in November 2013 and hosted by the Welsh Government, the NPS was established to work on behalf of the wider public sector across Wales. By using this combined purchasing power its goal is to secure annual savings of £25 million. Like other frameworks these professional bodies help local authorities and others to aggregate their procurement demands and achieve efficiency and cost savings across a range of products known for their reliability. www. cromwellpolythene.co.uk

Pole system for cleaning in explosive atmospheres Following three years of R&D, Spinaclean - manufacturer of SkyVac - has developed the SkyVac ATEX (atmospheres explosive) pole system. This allows the operator to clean above the ground safely for the first time, solving the worry of possible disasters when cleaning in explosive or combustible atmospheres containing airborne vapour or dust. The new SkyVac ATEX range is an independently certified high level cleaning vacuum suitable for use in these potentially dangerous areas. It is designed for use in petroleum or chemical works, light metal manufacturing, production of animal feeds, flour, starch, grain and sugar, wood, coal, plastics, and textile works. Unlike standard high level cleaning vacuum systems, this range eliminates all risks of explosion. This is achieved by preventing any source of ignition of combustible dust or vapour either by sparks from the vacuum motor or by static discharge. SkyVac’s ATEX pole has the same dimensions as its standard model but is manufactured with 100% carbon fibre to make it very light at only 186 grams per metre. All accessories, flexi-hose end tools and cotton holdall containing the equipment are ‘anti-static safe’. Like all SkyVac products, the lightweight carbon fibre pole system will reach 40 feet and requires only one operator. www.spinaclean.com
