GLOBAL HOTEL GROUPS EYEING MYANMAR Leading interna onal hotel groups Starwood and Marrio have both expressed an interest in entering Myanmar, one of the last truly underdeveloped tourism markets in the world. With Myanmar gradually opening up to foreign tourists and entrepreneurs, the country has huge poten al although its

infrastructure is in desperate need of investment and development. However, while both Starwood and Marrio have monitored the situa on closely, neither group is likely to firm up its interest before trade sanc ons imposed by America and Europe are li ed. 

URA APPROVES SEVERAL NEW RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN SINGAPORE The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore has given its provisional consent for the construc on of several new residen al and commercial projects in the city state. Most notable among the projects given the green light is a 670-room hotel to be built on Orchard Road by the Hong Fok Corpora on’s Yat Yuen Hong unit. Other large developments include a mixed office and retail project to be constructed at Jurong Gateway by Watergate,

a joint venture between CapitaMalls Asia, CapitaMall Trust, and CapitaLand. Also receiving provisional approval was a 532-unit condominium at Punggol Field by Publique Realty, and the 429unit Fraser Centrepoint’s Palm Isles at Flora Drive. Approval was also given to Asplenium Land to develop 276 units for Seletar Park Residences, while Keppel is set to build a 367-unit condominium at Keppel Bay Drive. 

MULIA GROUP TO OPEN LUXURY RESORT IN BALI The Mulia Group is set to open a stunning new beachfront resort in Bali this year. Located in Nusa Dua, the resort will feature a range of luxury accommoda on that includes villas, suites, and a 6-bedroom mansion. A café-style brasserie will offer idyllic ocean views, while Mediterranean cuisine will be on offer at the resort’s

main restaurant. Guests will be able to recharge their ba eries in the lounge, oceanfront pools, or spa. There is a 250-capacity lakeside wedding chapel, while corporate and private events can be accommodated in the Grand Ballroom and conference rooms with a combined capacity of 5,000. 

STARWOOD ENJOYS RECORD GROWTH On the back of the largest growth in the company’s history last year, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide has confirmed its expansion plans for 2012 with a focus on the Asia Pacific region. Having opened a record 21,000 rooms

in 81 new hotels worldwide last year, Starwood plans to launch 80 new proper es in 2012. By far the biggest growth sectors for the group are the luxury and upper upscale segments, which account for more than 60% of all planned new proper es.

Asia Pacific is the geographically most important market with almost 50 new hotels planned across the region in 2012 taking the company’s Asia Pacific por olio to 250. Almost 35 of those new hotels will be in China.  IHG COMPLETES ITS INDOCHINA CAPITAL SET Intercon nental Hotel Group (IHG) has completed its set of Crowne-Plaza proper es in the capital ci es of Indochina a er reaching an agreement with Vietnam’s BIM Group to build a new hotel in the Lao an capital city of Vien ane. The deal also includes a new resort development on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc and adds to exis ng proper es in Hanoi and Phnom Penh. Both of the new hotels are due for comple on in 2015. 

ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR ACCOR IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION The Accor Group enjoyed another great year in the Asia Pacific region in 2011 with the opening of 67 new proper es in 10 countries across the region as well as the acquisi on of Mirvac Hotels & Resorts. With a

presence in 16 countries across the Asia Pacific, Accor now operates a total of nearly 92,000 rooms in 480 hotels, confirming its posi on as the leading hotel operator in the region. The company also raised its profile

in Australasia with the strategic acquisi on of Mirvac Hotels & Resorts, which manages 6,100 rooms in 48 hotels in Australia and New Zealand. 
