Nebraska
Danger No Bright Light
No Water
DIR: JOE DANTE• USA • 1984 • 1 HR 46 MINS • Comedy/HORROR • CAST: ZACH GALLIGAN, PHOEBE CATES, HOYT AXTON
"Don't expose him to bright light. Don't ever get him wet. And don't ever, ever feed him after midnight." Two years after E.T., Steven Spielberg gave it a mischievous sibling in Joe Dante’s anarchic creature feature, a subversive parable on the dangers of irresponsible pet care that doubles as an antidote to small-town Americana and Yuletide sentimentality.

No Food After Midnight
SAT 14 DEC, EVENT 9PM / FILM 10PM
Zach Galligan plays the teenager who is given a cuddly pet mogwai called Gizmo, but through carelessness he unwittingly unleashes a vicious, murderous swarm of little gremlins. There's no doubt whose side director Joe Dante is on and he gleefully trashes the view of small-town America portrayed by feel-good movies such as It's a Wonderful Life (which is being screened on TV throughout the tale). Film buffs will delight in the many in-jokes and the long list of cameos, ranging from Roger Corman veteran Dick Miller to Spielberg
Jeune & Jolie
himself. And Phoebe Cates's admirably straight-faced Christmas speech should be compulsory viewing during the festive season. Hosted by Ralph McLean (BBC NI) with complimentary Jameson cocktails, music and prizes (including an original print by Peter Strain) this will be a jingle-bell-tastic night to remember! Tickets £10 - book online at www.queensfilmtheatre.com Please note this event is for over 18s only.
FRI 29 NOV – WED 11 DEC
Dir: Alexander Payne • USA • 2013 • 1 Hr 55 Mins • Drama • Cast: Bruce Dern, Will Forte, June Squibb
Dir: François Ozon • France • 2013 • 1 Hr 35 Mins • Drama • Cast: Marine Vacth, Géraldine Pailhas, Frédéric Pierrot, Charlotte Rampling • English Subtitles
Affectionate and heart-warming, Alexander Payne’s (Sideways, The Descendants) latest is a road movie with a difference.
Jeune & Jolie, from director François Ozon (In the House, Potiche), follows the journey of 17-year-old Isabelle (played impressively by model turned actress Marine Vacth) as she begins to explore her sexuality.
Like the earlier Sideways, Nebraska sets a very odd couple off on a journey - this time across the plains of the small-town Midwest. Irascible and forgetful, senior citizen Woody is convinced he has won a million dollars in a marketing scam and insists that he and his estranged son David make their way from Montana to Nebraska to claim his prize. On the way they encounter some old friends and family, as well as some old enemies…and everyone wants to take advantage of Woody‘s supposed good fortune. David, meanwhile, starts to understand his father better and understand just why his dad has become such a grumpy old man…
Sweet and sour, funny and sad all at the same time, Nebraska is an affectionate but refreshingly unsentimental portrait of small-town America, and the complex, often troubled, relationships we have with our parents, especially as they age. With stand-out performances from Will Forte as the bemused David, veteran Bruce Dern as Woody (who rightly won Best Actor at Cannes), and, in particular, June Squibb as Woody’s long suffering spouse, Nebraska is an absolute joy.
After losing her virginity one summer, Isabelle embarks on a path of prostitution with mostly older men, ostensibly to pay for school, though clearly she is testing the socio-sexual boundaries set by herself and her family circle. Jeune & Jolie was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and is a “nuanced, emotionally temperate study of a precocious youth ” - Hollywood Reporter.

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman star in the powerful true story of a former army officer who tracks down his wartime torturer.
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is — through director Paul Greengrass’ distinctive lens — simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalisation.
In Sebastián Lelio’s delightful, poignant yet gently funny drama, Paulina García delivers the performance of a lifetime, for which she deservedly won the Best Actress prize at Berlin.
Short Term 12 is told from the perspective of Grace (Brie Larson), a twentysomething supervisor at a foster care facility for at-risk teenagers.
García plays Gloria, who is 58-years-old but still feels young. She lives a lonely life, but remains hopeful in her search for love and spends time in ballrooms for older singles. When she meets the gentle Rodolfo, Gloria embarks on the new relationship with zeal, but Rodolfo’s deep ties to his adult children and ex-wife pose an obstacle.
From a troubled background herself, Grace is passionate about all of those in her care, as well as her co-worker and boyfriend Mason. A surprising turn of events throws her into a tailspin at the same time as the arrival of a troubled but gifted young girl and the imminent departure of soon-to-be 18-year-old Marcus from the facility.
Blue Is the Warmest Colour is an exquisite film; an honest and hair-raising study of first love, sex and a maturing relationship, capturing the confusion of teenage sexuality and the intensity of exploring its social taboos.
It’s 1944 and young Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) is off to Columbia University. Although studious, there are early signs of creative rebellion, fuelled by meeting the charismatic Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan).
Refreshing in the candour with which it depicts middle-age physicality and sexuality, and with a great soundtrack ranging from disco to cult Latin American hits, Gloria is an uplifting charmer with a transcendent climax.
Though the subject matter can be dark and upsetting, Short Term 12 finds humour and lightness to make it a thoroughly enjoyable watch.
British Army officer Eric Lomax was one of the thousands of Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the construction of the Thai-Burma railway during WW2. This became known as the ‘Death Railway’ because so many Allied prisoners of war died during its construction. Decades later, still traumatised by the torment he suffered, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past. An incredible true story of survival, love and redemption.
The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
Adele is a sensitive fifteen-yearold student. Her days pass like any other until she realises that her sexual desires turn more towards her own gender than the boys who ask her out. After meeting a blue-haired stranger, the confident and assertive Emma, Adele soon finds herself tentatively visiting gay bars and, shortly afterwards, wrapped in the arms of her new lover. Then, her true journey begins.
Carr introduces Ginsberg to the real New York: jazz, drugs and parlour poetry where they stumble upon William Burroughs (Ben Foster) and David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall). Ginsberg is instantly smitten with Carr, but Carr only has eyes for a rugged baseballer named Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston). Together the band of young poets dream a juvenile plan for a libertine literary movement but what binds them instead is a shocking murder which implicates them all.

FOOTSTEPS IN JERUSALEM
TRIPLE DIVIDE
THURS 12 DEC, 6PM Dir: VARIOUS • ISRAEL • 2013 • 1 HR 27 MINS
Leviathan is a thrilling, immersive documentary that takes you deep inside the dangerous world of commercial fishing.
Footsteps in Jerusalem is a tribute to David Perlov, the forefather of modern Israeli documentary cinema, and to his 1963 revolutionary film In Jerusalem, made a few years before the ‘67 War, in a divided city.
Employing an arsenal of cameras that pass freely from film crew to ship crew, and swoop from below sea level to astonishing bird’s eye views, Leviathan is unlike anything you have ever seen; a purely visceral, cinematic experience. Winner Best British Feature at Edinburgh Film Festival 2013.
In 2013, Renen Schorr, Founding Director of the Sam Spiegel Film & TV School – Jerusalem, asked top graduates and students to create short films inspired by Perlov, from their own personal perspective, 50 years after In Jerusalem. Nine select films were curated with the original in Jerusalem to form a new, inter-generational film about a city that has dramatically changed – politically, demographically, economically and culturally. On 12.12.13, a decade after Perlov’s passing, the film will be screened as an international event at 50 select locations in Israel and worldwide. Tickets £4

Narrated by Mark Ruffalo, this provocative documentary on the impact of shale gas extraction (fracking) in the US poses some challenging questions. The film investigates the potential negative impacts from shale gas industrial development and how those impacts have been handled by the US state, specifically the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Narrated with help from actor and advocate Mark Ruffalo, the film raises concerns about possible endangerment of public and environmental health due to shale gas extraction. Through personal stories, expert interviews, and investigation of case files, Triple Divide tells a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of the processes that are meant to regulate industry and protect the public and environment.

What better way to spend New Year’s Day than with The Irish Pub… We meander across Ireland from Connemara to Carlow, from Monaghan to West Cork, from Louth to Limerick, from conversation to captivating conversation. The Irish Pub is a eulogy to the greatest institution in Irish society, the pub or more specifically the traditional Irish publicans who run them. The characters in this exceptionally endearing film all run and own pubs that have been in their families for generations and it is through their warmth, wit and wisdom that we gain an insight into the heart and soul of The Irish Pub.

Dir: ROB REINER • USA • 1989 • 1 Hr 35 Mins • COMEDY/DRAMA/ ROMANCE • Cast: Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher
Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen • UK/GERMANY/USA • 1994 • 1 Hr 50 Mins • COMEDY • Cast: Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh
The fake-orgasm-in-a-deli set piece propelled Meg Ryan into stratospheric stardom, but there are numerous other pleasures to be found in Nora Ephron’s Oscar-nominated screenplay and Rob Reiner’s astute direction.
When the head of Hudsucker Industries jumps forty-four floors to his death, the Board of Directors devises a devilish scheme to keep control of the company.
Sharp-eyed, bittersweet and smart as a whip, When Harry Met Sally is crammed with quirks and caustic truths about dating and relationships in general. The charisma and chemistry between Ryan and Crystal is perfect, the writing is top-notch, everything just works. It’s about love, and being with the person who is most important to you during the important moments in life – with possibly the most romantic New Year’s Eve scene ever!
They appoint as the new President someone who will inspire panic in the stockholders - a puppet they can push around. The choice falls on the new boy in the mail room, Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins). But soon Norville’s presidency becomes an unexpected success, leaving the Directors to plot their revenge. The Hudsucker Proxy may be one of the least known of brothers Joel and Ethan Coen’s films, but it’s one of the most fun and brilliantly realised stories they’ve brought to the screen. Crazy, manic, and with a touch of actual magic as the New Year chimes in.

A breathtaking digital restoration of the ultimate romantic epic.
Say goodbye to 2013 with this quintessential and much-loved MGM musical starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor.
A charming and heart-warming homage to the cinema, Cinema Paradiso is back on the big screen where it belongs. A real delight.
It wouldn’t be Christmas at QFT without It’s a Wonderful Life.
Brian Henson directs his late father’s creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time.
Set in Hollywood at the end of the silent era, Singin’ in the Rain tells the story of a newcomer actor as she meets the star of tinseltown, Don Lockwood, and makes good both on screen and in his arms in this sweet showbiz story. With its combination of endearing performances, a razor-sharp script by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, inspired direction from Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen and a dazzling array of show-stopping song and dance sequences, Singin’ in the Rain remains a triumphant and exhilarating cinema experience.
The multi award-winning homage to the love of cinema tells the story of Salvatore, now a successful film director, returning home for the funeral of Alfredo, his old friend who was the projectionist at the local cinema throughout his childhood. Soon memories of his first love affair with the beautiful Elena and all the highs and lows that shaped his life come flooding back, as Salvatore reconnects with the community he left 30 years earlier.
High-spirited high jinks on Christmas Eve put Frank Cross (Bill Murray) in a ghostly time warp in another (see: Muppets) hilarious take-off of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. A brand new digital re-release for Christmas 2013.
Set against the turbulent backdrop of the American Civil War, the story of feisty, petulant southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) and her complicated love life involving the dashing Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) and the married Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) is the most successful film in box office history. Released to coincide with the centenary of Vivien Leigh (1913–1967), this spectacular restoration from the original negative offers the ultimate big screen experience. This special one-off screening will be introduced by Colin McAlpin, film critic and historian, and include a 30-minute intermission.
In this heartwarming tale, James Stewart plays George Bailey, a small-town man whose dreams and ambitions are never realised because of his responsibilities of work and family. When he is at the brink of despair and on a bridge contemplating suicide, his guardian angel Clarence (Henry Travers) appears and takes him on a journey to show him what life in Bedford Falls would have been like without him. Regarded as a cinematic masterpiece and one of the most popular films of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life is the very definition of the Christmas feel-good family film.
Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit’s wife, and a host of Muppets taking other primary roles in this playful adaptation of the sombre tale. An excellent festive family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy. The screening on Saturday 14 Dec at 4pm is presented in association with 7UP. Expect freebies and prizes!
Cross, who has made the meteoric rise from the depths of the mailroom to TV network president, is mean, nasty, uncaring, unforgiving and has a sadistic sense of humour perfect qualities for a modern-day Scrooge. Before the night is over, he’ll be visited by a maniacal New York cab driver from the past, a present-day fairy who’s into pratfalls and, finally, a ghoulish seven foot-headless messenger from the future.

Dir. Terence Fisher, 1968, 1 hr 32 mins
Dir. Piers Haggard, 1971, 1 hr 37 mins
Dir. John Carpenter, 1987, 1 hr 42 mins
Satanism meets the British stiff upper lip in Hammer’s adaptation of Dennis Wheatley’s occult novel. Apparently Christopher Lee’s favourite of all his many films.
A rare example of the short-lived ‘folk horror’ genre, The Blood on Satan’s Claw tells how a 17th century English village becomes possessed by demonic forces.
The Antichrist is alive and well (sort of) in John Carpenter’s unsettling chiller…

FILM 6
Dir. Kenneth Anger, 1969, 11 mins
Dir. Kenneth Anger, 1972, 27 mins
Dir. William Friedkin, 1973, 2 hrs 12 mins
Kenneth Anger’s trippy occult short features a satanic funeral (for a cat) and a soundtrack by Mick Jagger.
Anger’s second film of the night depicts a ritual summoning the angel Lucifer.
Well, we had to really! The original and still the best, it doesn’t get more scary than William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty’s tale of the epic battle between good and demonic evil.

SUN 1 DEC, 3PM
Dir: Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden & Robert Hamer • UK • 1945 • 1 Hr 39 Mins • Horror/Thriller • Cast: Mervyn Johns, Michael Redgrave, Roland Culver
Dir: Masaki Kobayashi • Japan • 1964 • 3 Hrs 3 Mins • FANTASY/Horror • Cast: Rentarô Mikuni, Michiyo Aratama, Misako Watanabe • English Subtitles
A stand out for British film in the 1940s, this Ealing Studios classic showcases many different stories that vary from the mildly scary to the downright terrifying.
The complete 183-minute original Japanese cut of Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan — one of the most meticulously crafted supernatural fantasy films ever made.
Forever remembered for Michael Redgrave’s portrayal of an imbalanced ventriloquist who believes his dummy is real, Dead of Night also reveals a racing car driver’s premonition of a fatal bus crash, a light hearted tale of two obsessed golfers, one of whom becomes haunted by the other’s ghost; a ghostly encounter during a children’s Christmas party, which was originally cut from the American release of the film, and a haunted antique mirror. The portmanteau film has a coveted place in Martin Scorsese’s top 11 horror films of all time.
Based on Lafcadio Hearn’s collection of Japanese folklore, Kwaidan consists of four distinct and unrelated stories. The stories within the film deal with the supernatural and although it is recognised as a horror film, Kwaidan does not consist of gore and viscera but rather relies on the slow build-up of tension and quiet suspense.Expressionistic in style, Kobayashi’s interpretation of Hearn’s ghost stories prove to be chilling and stirring. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes.
Black Sunday (which screened at QFT in November) was such a huge hit that a follow-up was swiftly demanded, and horror maestro Mario Bava duly devised this three-part horror anthology blending modern and period stories. Bava’s direction is as stylish as ever, and Black Sabbath is almost a compendium of his favourite themes.

Belfast Film Festival presents site specific screenings throughout Northern Ireland. • GHOST STORIES FOR CHRISTMAS: M.R. JAMES DOUBLE BILL As a Christmas treat in the late 1960s and ‘70s, the BBC produced adaptations of ghost stories based on the works of M.R. James. We revive this tradition for this special event at Narrow Water Castle. • Whistle and I’ll Come to You (Jonathan Miller, 1968, 42 mins) • The Ash Tree (Lawrence Gordon Clark, 1975, 38 mins) Before the screenings, audience members will be treated to the short film Into the Fire (7 mins), directed by local filmmaker Mark Curran. Tickets £7 Venue: Narrow Water Castle, Newry Road, Warrenpoint Book online at www.belfastfilmfestival.org
“Yule Love It!” Dickens classic tale was initially going to be re-imagined differently and Richard Donner had to battle with producers to keep the tone darker. Even much of Danny Elfman’s suitably grim music was replaced by upbeat songs. At the end of the day though, this is very much Bill Murray’s movie and its kinetic energy helps make this a true Christmas classic. Complimentary mulled wine and mince pies will be served. Introduction by Tim Burden & Gary Sullivan. Tickets £4 Venue: The Braid, 1-29 Bridge Street, Ballymena Book online at www.thebraid.com
