DIR: VALESKA GRISEBACH • 2017 GERMANY/BULGARIA/AUSTRIA 2 HRS 1 MIN • SUBTITLED

Masculine tensions and cultural difference reach boiling point in this sizzling, brilliantly observed western from director Valeska Grisebach, where migrant German construction workers are pitched against villagers in Bulgaria. When a group of German construction workers start work on a hydroelectric plant in the remote countryside of Bulgaria, tension brews when they immediately adopt a sense of superiority against the locals. These tensions are only worsened by former legionnaire Meinhard (Meinhard Neumann), who borrows a white horse from a local fixer... Western is a memorable and satisfying update of the genre and a bold look at masculinity, community and conflict.

FILMWORKER TUES 22 – THURS 24 MAY

DIR: TONY ZIERRA • 2017 • USA 1 HR 34 MINS

A revealing portrait of the influential director Stanley Kubrick, painted by his right-hand man, Leon Vitali. It’s a rare person who would give up fame and fortune to toil in obscurity for someone else’s creative vision. Yet, that’s exactly what Leon Vitali did after his acclaimed performance as ‘Lord Bullingdon’ in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. The young actor surrendered his thriving career to become Kubrick’s loyal right-hand man. By experiencing Leon’s journey we come to understand how the mundane gives rise to the magnificent as timeless filmmaking is brought to life at its most practical and profound level.
