DIR: PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON • 2017 • USA • 2 HRS 10 MINS
In his final film, Daniel Day-Lewis reunites with Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master) to deliver a masterful performance as a society dressmaker beguiled by a young waitress. Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young,
strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth film, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis. LADY BIRD FRI 16 FEB – THURS 1 MAR
DIR: GRETA GERWIG • 2017 • USA • 1 HR 34 MINS
The frequent star of US indie hits like Frances Ha and Mistress America, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut is already a multi award-winning and critical hit. Set in 2002 in Sacramento, California, it stars Saoirse Ronan as confused, precocious teenager Christine or ‘Lady Bird’, as she prefers to be called. Drifting through her final year at a strict Catholic school, she is full of daydreams and lofty aspirations for her future, forcing clashes with her mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf), who is more preoccupied with money and other practical concerns. Covering semi-autobiographical ground, it could be self-indulgent but instead it’s beautifully and sensitively realised. Ronan and Metcalf’s sensational performances and Gerwig’s sophisticated writing make it an incredibly personal, authentic and involving coming-of-age story and quite possibly a future classic. “Gerwig's directorial debut is a joy from start to finish, a warm, generous snapshot of teenage vulnerability and exuberance.” – LARA ZARUM, VILLAGE VOICE ACCESS SCREENING The 6.40pm screening on Wed 28 Feb will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

In Sofia, Julia (Margita Gosheva), a cynical PR executive working for Bulgaria’s Ministry of Transport identifies an opportunity to spin a feel-good story and detract from a scandal engulfing her department. From that moment, nothing goes to plan for Tsanko or Julia. Glory is a wry satirical parable, and a smartly observed depiction of a society conflicted by class and the ruralurban divide.

BERÖRINGE
THE TOUCH FRI 23 FEB – THURS 1 MAR
DIR: INGMAR BERGMAN • 1971 • SWEDEN/USA • 1 HR 55 MINS PARTIALLY SUBTITLED
Now restored in its original bilingual version, the great Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman’s rarely seen chronicle of a passionate affair is a major rediscovery. During 1970 Ingmar Bergman shot The Touch, his first English language film. Elliott Gould (MASH), the first American to star in a Bergman film, was cast alongside regulars Bibi Andersson and Max von Sydow. A happily married mother of two, Karin (Andersson) surprises herself by responding in kind to an unforeseen profession of love from David (Gould), an archaeologist visiting Sweden whom her doctor husband Andreas (von Sydow) has befriended. But love, however toxically exhilarating, is seldom simple, and deceit and David’s volatile temperament take their toll…
Due to dubbed prints and mixed reviews, The Touch all but disappeared for decades. Now, however, the psychological precision of Bergman’s script and the subtlety and intensity of the performances can be properly appreciated, along with the evocative autumnal colours of Sven Nykvist’s burnished camerawork. Utterly compelling; a revelation. INGMAR BERGMAN AT QFT As part of the global celebrations of the centenary of Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007), QFT will be screening several Bergman titles over the coming months, including major rediscoveries The Touch (1971) and The Magic Flute (1975), alongside some of Bergman’s best-known features such as The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957) and Persona (1966).

RIDDLES OF THE SPHINX + LAURA MULVEY Q&A TUES 27 FEB, 6.20PM DIR: LAURA MULVEY & PETER WOLLEN • 1977 • UK 1 HR 31 MINS
Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen’s visually accomplished and intellectually rigorous Riddles of the Sphinx is one of the most important avant-garde films to have emerged from Britain during the 1970s. Drawing on psychoanalytical theories and the contemporary politics of representation, Mulvey and Wollen's second film explores the nature of patriarchy and how women have been objectified by mainstream narrative cinema. Formally experimental and socially committed, Riddles of the Sphinx subverts familiar cinematic codes and conventions to encourage an alternative relationship between spectator and female subject.
Followed by a Q&A with Laura Mulvey presented by Film Studies at Queen’s.

In April 2013, Yitang Zhang, a lecturer at the University of New Hampshire, submitted a paper to the Annals of Mathematics. Within weeks word spread – a little-known mathematician, with no permanent job, working in complete isolation had made an important breakthrough towards solving the Twin Prime Conjecture. This film is a study of Zhang's rise from obscurity and a disadvantaged youth to mathematical celebrity. Introduction by a representative from the School of Mathematics and Physics, Queen’s University Belfast (check website for details).
Food Evolution shows how easily misinformation, confusion and fear can overwhelm objective analysis. How do we ensure that our food supply is safe, and that everyone has enough to eat? How do we feed the world while also protecting the planet? Are GMO foods bad for your health? And, most importantly, what data, evidence and sources are we using to approach these important questions? A discussion will take place after the film focusing on issues relating to GMO foods with Johnathan J. Dalzell and Professor John Barry from Queen’s University Belfast. Tickets £3 – book at nisciencefestival.com.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN
CEZANNE: PORTRAITS OF A LIFE SAT 3 FEB, 4.20PM
DIR: PHIL GRABSKY • 2017 • UK 1 HR 27 MINS
Exhibition on Screen presents one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year. One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now.
TICKETS £10 (£8 concessions and Film Card holders)
HAPPY MONDAYS
Tickets for films at QFT are only £4 every Monday* And don’t forget, QFT has a licensed bar and free parking evenings and weekends. You can book online, by phone or pay at the Box Office.
*There is the very rare occasion when a film may be excluded from this offer (T&Cs apply, see website for details)

Christopher Luscombe, Director of the ‘glorious’ (Daily Telegraph) Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing (2014 and 2016), returns to tackle Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, a brilliantly bittersweet account of "the whirligig of time", with Adrian Edmondson (Bottom, The Young Ones) in the role of Malvolio and Kara Tointon (ITV’s Mr Selfridge and Sound of Music Live!) in the role of Olivia.
Tennessee Williams’ twentieth century masterpiece Cat on a Hot Tin Roof played a strictly limited season in London’s West End in 2017. Following his smash hit production of A Streetcar Named Desire, Benedict Andrews’ ‘thrilling revival’ (New York Times) stars Sienna Miller alongside Jack O’Connell and Colm Meaney. Please note: this is a recorded performance.
Nicholas Hytner directs a new take on the Shakespeare classic. Ben Whishaw (The Danish Girl, Skyfall, Hamlet) and Michelle Fairley (Fortitude, Game of Thrones) play Brutus and Cassius, David Calder (The Lost City of Z, The Hatton Garden Job) plays Caesar and David Morrissey (The Missing, Hangmen, The Walking Dead) is Mark Antony. Broadcast live from The Bridge Theatre, London.
