A Guide to
TIME travel MOVIES The rule is you should never meddle with the past. And we can see the sense in that. What if you went back to 1780? What if you bumped into John Jameson? What if you accidentally changed his mind about going into the whiskey business? It just doesn’t bear thinking about.

JAMESON PRESENTS
A Lesson in Obsession
Words By Leigh Forgie
As part of their September programme, the QFT have teamed up with Belfast’s Golden Thread Gallery to bring you Psychic Driving, an exhibition exploring what happens when we take our obsessions and fascinations to the absolute extreme. A selection of films hand-picked by curator Ben Crothers will accompany the exhibition, delving into the darker and often more violent side of sex, drugs, fame, power, and money. The question is what drives these characters to commit such heinous acts and why do we as film fans find these morbid explorations into the darkest of obsessions so fascinating? For a better understanding as to what compels a person to act upon these dark obsessions, look no further than American Psycho. Directed by Mary Harron and based on the novel by Brett Easton Ellis, this satirical thriller introduces us to Patrick Bateman
(Christian Bale), a Wall Street yuppie whose life of keeping up appearances in front of his wealthy, shallow friends causes him to lead double life as a serial killer.
The film contains graphics scenes of brutal violence and sexual degradation as Bateman‘s sadistic fantasies are laid bare on screen. Despite the on-going debate between director and author, the film leaves the audience wondering if Bateman really was a psychopathic monster, or whether the violent acts he committed were all in his mind. Did he loathe himself so much that he allowed himself to be wholly consumed by his obsessions? Or do we as an audience have more in common with him than we care to admit? One of the more recent additions to the bill is Harmony Korine’s sun-kissed crime caper Spring Breakers. The film follows four co-eds who, after performing a daring heist, embark upon the great American tradition of
AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS
IN A WORLD...
DIANA
Spring Break, only to be lured deeper into the world of crime, sex and violence by a creepy, megalomaniac gangster portrayed by James Franco. Starring Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez, these girls are initially fascinated by the dark world they’ve become entangled in. They probe the limits of their own moral compasses before soon realising they are no longer in the driving seat and that their dark obsessions are now in control. For audiences, seeing these once modern Disney princesses forever transformed into dark manifestations of their former selves makes for compelling viewing. Thankfully, our fascination with these Freudian nightmares end when the lights go up and the film ends. However, whenever you’re revisiting some of these classic films during the QFT’s Psychic Driving season (see page 14), just consider what life could be like if we didn’t let our conscious be our guide.

This moody, meditative Texas noir tells the tale of Casey Affleck’s Bob Guthrie, an outlaw on the run trying to reunite with his wife–the fantastic Rooney Mara–and the daughter he’s never met.
Carol Solomon is a struggling vocal coach. Propelled by the hubris of her father the reigning king of movie-trailer voice-over artists, Carol pursues her secret aspiration to be a voice-over star.
The long- awaited and much talked about biopic of Diana, Princess of Wales finally arrives.
Brought to life with exquisite detail, the gritty landscape of 1970s Texas Hill Country is the backdrop for this mood-drenched collision of love and crime. After his pregnant wife (Mara) makes one false move during a bloody shootout, a bank robber (Affleck) faces a 25-year sentence that destroys his dreams of a family life. Shot through with the yearning and melancholy of a folk ballad, David Lowery’s directorial breakthrough extends the Bonnie and Clyde tradition with its breathtaking meditation on the fragility and transience of love.
Her fiery sister, Dani, becomes a trusted confidante, and Carol engages the skills of a charming sound techie named Louis. Armed with renewed confidence, Carol lands her first voice-over gig… And then the real trouble begins. Carol becomes entangled in a web of dysfunction, sexism, unmitigated ego, and pride. Written and directed by and starring the multi-talented Lake Bell, this hilarious comedy brings its viewer into an idiosyncratic world where one woman fights the odds and finally finds her voice. Win a Date Night! See page 3 for details.
Covering the last two years of Diana’s life, Oliver (Five Minutes of Heaven) Hirschbiegel’s film stars Naomi Watts as the titular ‘people’s princess’ sporting Diana’s iconic coiffeur and couture wardrobe. Still to receive its world premiere at the time of writing, the film reportedly centres around her charity work, her (ultimately fatal) persecution by the paparazzi and her relationship with surgeon Hasnat Kahn (whom she nicknamed ‘Mr Wonderful’). Brace yourselves - it may be good (and we do hope so); it may be bad but one thing is certain, Diana is soon going to be everywhere.

1972’s Deep Throat brought ‘adult’ movies a little more into the mainstream, turning Floridian go-go dancer Linda Boreman into a briefly flickering star and making $100 million-plus for the film’s allegedly Mafioso backers.
Based on a novel by Henry James, this is a darkly comic but emotionally authentic film about a six-year-old living through a bitter divorce.
Oscar-winning director Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque, Chico and Rita) collaborates with acclaimed screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrièrre on this heart-warming story of an artist who re-discovers life.
An enigmatic, visually astounding cinematic experience that defies categorisation, Upstream Colour is the long-awaited follow-up to Shane Carruth’s Primer, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2004.
Kristin Scott Thomas stars in this bittersweet ‘comedie de moeurs’, which is French in spirit but universal in appeal.
Director Paolo Sorrentino and actor Toni Servillo re-unite – following 2004’s The Consequences of Love and 2008’s Il Divo – for The Great Beauty, a Fellini-esque comedy that charts the decadence and dissipation of contemporary Italian society.
Little but drugs, abuse and heartache followed for Boreman, most of it at the hands of her seedy manager/lover, Chuck Traynor – until she finally took control of her life. In this period-perfect biopic, directing partners Epstein and Friedman (Howl) cast a wonderfully convincing Amanda Seyfried as Boreman/Lovelace and Peter Sarsgaard as Traynor, and cleverly split the story into two separate accounts of Boreman’s experience.
Little Maisie (Onata Aprile) is the casualty of the acrimonious divorce of two rich Manhattanites: rock star Julianne Moore and art dealer Steve Coogan. Abandoned by her self-absorbed parents, Maisie is left to the informal custody of their new partners, waiter Alexander Skarsgård and nanny Joanna Vanderham. Brilliant performances and inspired direction make this updating of Henry James’ novel an outstanding comedy-drama of contemporary adult relationships, as seen from the point of view of an innocent child.
Jean Rochefort plays Marc Cros, who has not sculpted for years; disillusioned by two world wars, the artist has lost all faith in art, life and humanity. But when his wife encounters a Spanish woman on the run from Franco’s army and offers her the chance to live in the artist’s studio, Marc finds himself with an attractive young model for what will be his last sculpture.
Kris (Amy Seimetz) is drugged by a thief and relieved of her possessions, but is also unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of an organism that appears to have overpowered her identity. She meets and becomes involved with Jeff (played by director Carruth), who appears to have gone through a similar experience. Together they try to assemble the loose fragments of their lives, and find a place of safety. Sure to lead to years of speculation, discussion and debate, this is entirely original filmmaking by a true cinematic visionary.
Damien, a Chinese civilization professor, lives with his partner, Iva, and their son Noé. In a relationship drained of love, Iva one day demands a favour of Damien. He must ask his father – a senior member of the French Council of State – for help in preventing a woman Iva knows from being deported. But Damien and his father don’t get on and are barely ever in touch with each other. This dangerous mission throws Damien into a spiral that will turn his life upside down.
Servillo is Jep, an ageing writer living in Rome who has been the life and soul of the city’s cultural nightlife for decades. After his 65th birthday, the cracks in Jep’s high-flying life begin to show and suddenly his life of parties and soirees doesn’t seem quite so appealing… Introduction by Mike Catto, broadcaster and arts critic, on Tues 17 Sept, 6.20pm, followed by Talking Movies audience discussion.

Celebrated writer/director Jem Cohen sets his first fiction feature in Vienna’s grand Kunsthistorisches Museum, where the extraordinary collection of Brueghels, Rembrandts and Rubens starts a friendship between Anne (influential singer/ artist Mary Margaret O’Hara), an enigmatic foreigner in town waiting for her comatose cousin to wake, and museum guard Johann.
Seven years in the making, When the Dragon Swallowed the Sun reveals the recent, tragic history of Tibet from inside this most remote and unique nation.
Einstein supposedly said: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth, man would have no more than four years left to live.”
The struggles and the glories of a hero of science.
InRealLife asks what exactly is the internet and what is it doing to our children?
The pair’s charming interactions, firstly over art and then out and about in the wintry streets of the city, are composed with a painterly eye. Full of detail and quietly intense, Museum Hours rewards on many levels: in its depiction of an unexpected relationship; as a portrait of Vienna; as a thoughtful observation on art and the act of viewing, and on the interplay between art history and personal experience.
The film reveals new facts, internal conflicts, and contradictions in a thorough and riveting treatment of this focus of worldwide passion and concern. The combination of stunningly filmed footage from India, China and Tibet, along with a prologue narrated by Dennis Haysbert and an original soundtrack by Philip Glass, Thom Yorke and Damien Rice make this film not only the definitive treatment of the Tibetan crisis, but a film with overwhelming emotional impact. The film features Richard Gere, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the 14th Dalai Lama, prominent Chinese contemporary artists and all the leading figures of the exiled Tibetan freedom movement.
Over the last decade, millions of bees have disappeared worldwide. Is this a one-time anomaly or are we facing total system collapse? Looking for answers, director Markus Imhoof—using exquisite cinematography to put the viewer inside the bees’ world—travels from the Alps to the Arizona desert, interviewing experts ranging from beekeepers to scientists. What separates this work from earlier films on the subject is that Imhoof proposes a possible solution…
Stephen Hawking, the world’s most famous living scientist, tells his own life story in his own words. Given unprecedented personal access to the physicist, filmmaker Stephen Finnigan delves into memories of Hawking’s student days, recounts his astonishing scientific discoveries, and portrays his struggle against Motor Neurone Disease, with which Hawking, now 71, was first diagnosed at age 21. An intimate and inspiring portrait of a remarkable man.

Taking us on a journey from the bedrooms of British teenagers to the world of Silicon Valley, filmmaker Beeban Kidron suggests that rather than the promise of free and open connectivity, young people are increasingly ensnared in a commercial world. Beguiling and glittering on the outside, it can be alienating and addictive. Quietly building its case, InRealLife asks if we can afford to stand by while our children, trapped in their 24/7 connectivity, are being outsourced to the net? SPECIAL SATELLITE Q&A SCREENING The screening on Sun 22 Sept will be followed by a live satellite Q&A with director Beeban Kidron.

In the 1980s the iconic pop star, Adam Ant, was at the height of his fame, easily recognised by the white stripe painted across his face and his striking imagery of Prince Charming and the Dandy Highwayman. Twenty years later, after a mental breakdown, he was locked up and forcibly sedated, putting him in a state of artistic oblivion. Jack Bond’s film, The Blueblack Hussar, follows him on his first tour for 15 years as he plays small London clubs, culminating in a performance before 55,000 at Hyde Park. The film features the actress Charlotte Rampling who inspired his first album Dirk Wears White Sox, the producer Mark Ronson and the artist who was his mentor, Allen Jones.

Winner of 10 Audience Awards at film festivals and starring Alan Cumming, Any Day Now is a powerful tale of love, acceptance and family.
Michael Cimino’s follow-up to The Deer Hunter divided critics and the public alike on its initial release, when it was shown in a shorter, 148-minute cut.
Mesmerising to watch, saturated in light and colour, and topped by Alain Delon at his iciest, Plein Soleil is a terrific treat.
Impeccably restored, Otto Preminger’s cool and stylish classic is a film that’s ripe for rediscovery.
When a teenager with Down’s Syndrome (Isaac Leyva) is abandoned by his mother, a gay couple (Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt) take him in and become the loving family he’s never had. But when their unconventional living arrangement is discovered by authorities, the men are forced to fight a biased legal system to save the life of the child they have come to love as their own.
Cimino’s story of a lawyer (Kris Kristofferson) and his attempts to help immigrants out West in their struggle with a brutal cattle owners’ association has been digitally restored to its full Director’s Cut length (216 minutes) and is back where it belongs, on the big screen. Over the last decade the film has been broadly reassessed; filmmaker Mark Cousins has written that the film is “America photographed like a 19th century painting,” while many other critics cite it as one of the key American films of its period.
In this first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, director René Clément’s camera celebrates the dangerous beauty of the 24-year-old Delon as charismatic sociopath Tom Ripley playing out a game of murder and double bluff against stunning Mediterranean landscapes.
Jean Seberg plays Cécile, the spoiled 17-year-old daughter of Raymond (David Niven), a wealthy Parisian widower vacationing in a sumptuous villa on the French Riviera. Their shallow, pleasure-seeking existence is threatened when Raymond decides to marry Cécile’s straitlaced godmother, Anne (Deborah Kerr), who disapproves of the teenager’s steamy summer affair with Philippe (Geoffrey Horne). To keep her carefree world from being shattered, Cécile plots to drive Anne away. But the plan takes an unforeseen and devastating turn.
Inspired by a true story from the late 1970s, Any Day Now touches on legal and social issues that are still relevant today.
Introduction by Dr. Aaron Hunter, Film Studies, Queen’s University, on Fri 6 Sept, 5pm.
In capturing the Ripley of Highsmith’s novel, Delon gives a spine-tingling performance, one that is underscored by Nino Rota’s sparkling and eerie soundtrack. And Clément slowly builds the tension to an almost unbearable level.

Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Lester (Henry V at the National Theatre, BBC’s Hustle) takes the title role. Playing opposite him as the duplicitous Iago is fellow Olivier Award-winner Rory Kinnear (The Last of the Haussmans), who is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner (Timon of Athens) following their acclaimed collaboration on the National Theatre’s recent production of Hamlet. Othello, newly married to Desdemona - who is half his age - is appointed leader of a major military operation. We’re thrilled to be screening the first ever live cinema broadcast from the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Company. We kick-start an exciting new season of three RSC plays with the sellout production of Richard II (the fastest selling show in the RSC’s history), with David Tennant in the title role and directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran. Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years.
