DIGITAL LOVE
Her
Words by Leigh Forgie
face-to-face with his peers.
Be honest, how many times have you looked at your phone today? It’s become social convention for our lives to almost be dictated by smartphone notifications and our online personas. Whether you’re accepting an invitation on a social network, challenging friends to the latest online game, or even searching for “the one” through an online dating site, it’s impossible to deny that technology has become an integral part of our social lives.
In the midst of a crushing divorce, it seems that in an age dominated by technology, the only relationship worth any effort from Theodore is with his computer’s ever-evolving sentient operating system, featuring the husky vocals of Scarlett Johansson.
From the quirky mind of visionary filmmaker Spike Jonze comes Her, a warm romantic comedydrama with just a touch of science fiction that takes this notion of technological dependency to the next level. It’s a touching tale of boy-meets-girl given a post-modern, cerebral twist. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Theodore Twombly, a socially awkward recluse living in a near-future that looks like it could have been imagined by Apple. Indeed Theodore tends to bury himself in either his smartphone or virtual reality games rather than engage
Thankfully this OS is more Siri than HAL 9000. Calling herself Samantha, Theodore soon realises that she is the ideal woman for him in every way – apart from in the corporeal sense. Breaking a taboo of their own making, they form a romantic relationship the likes the world has never seen before. The premise is as simple as it is bizarre, but then again Jonze was never a director to play by the rules of our reality. With a background in music videos, he is the creative mind behind films such as the darkly intelligent Being John Malkovich, and the film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. Her is just as unique on a visual scale, complete with a beautifully modern, tender
DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
THE INVISIBLE WOMAN
soundtrack provided by the likes of Karen O, the Breeders and Arcade Fire. Beneath the surface, the film satirically comments on the state of modern relationships. As Theodore navigates the dangers of singledom, such as online dating and disturbing phone sex, his relationship with Samantha is surprisingly the most human and real one depicted on screen. It is clear that Her is a very dry and rather revealing take on our increasing reliance upon gadgetry to function on a social capacity. Deservedly, the film has been nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. However, it also features one of the most interesting and unique love stories to hit the big screen in years - just remember to switch your phone off as the house lights fade.

Dir: Jean-Marc Vallée • USA • 2013 • 1 HR 57 MINS • BIOGRAPHY/DRAMA/HISTORY • Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto

Filmmaker Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) returns with an original love story that explores the evolving nature – and the risks – of intimacy in the modern world.
Jean-Marc Vallée’s incredible film gives Matthew McConaughey another transformative role after a string of fantastic performances over the last few years.
Ralph Fiennes follows 2011’s Coriolanus with this finely directed drama focusing on Charles Dickens’ secret love affair with young actress Nelly Turnan.
He stars as accidental AIDS activist Ron Woodroof, who, after contracting HIV, fought the medical establishment via an international smuggling network designed to get the right treatments into the hands of people with the virus.
At the height of his fame, Dickens (Fiennes) meets and is entranced by 18-year-old Ellen Lawless Turnan (Felicity Jones). His slow pursuit of her gradually gains urgency and it is clear she is deeply conflicted by her feelings for him and her upright morals. Told through seamlessly interwoven flashbacks of Nelly’s life, we navigate the joy, despair and sometimes heartbreaking fallout of their enduring affair, which lasted until his death.
Set in the Los Angeles of the near future, Her follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who is heartbroken after the end of a long relationship. He becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice (Scarlett Johansson) who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.
McConaughey is a thin, grizzly triumph, and owns the screen as the foul-mouthed, womanising cowboy. Jared Leto, equally stunning as Ron’s drag queen business partner Rayon, gives a human heart to a tale that’s sad, funny, and exciting in equal measure. Unmissable. The 6.40pm screening on Wed 19 Feb will be an Access screening with audio description and on-screen captioning.
Based on Clare Tomalin’s biography, this atmospheric, unstuffy period piece offers an immersive, perception-confounding look at the lesser known life of the celebrated author. With exceptional support from scene stealers Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Hollander.

Sharp and funny, the Coen Brothers latest features star-in-the-the-making Oscar Isaac as a hapless folk singer in ‘60s New York, along with Carey Mulligan and a surprise appearance by Justin Timberlake.
In 2009 Alex Gibney (Mea Maxima Culpa) was hired to make a film about Lance Armstrong’s comeback to cycling. The project was shelved when the doping scandal erupted, and re-opened after Armstrong’s confession.
Claire Denis’s jagged, daringly fragmented and very darkest film – visually, psychologically, and politically – is that rarest of cinematic narratives, a genuinely contemporary film noir.
A critical and commercial sensation at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival - and a hit at Outburst in November Stranger by the Lake is a captivating and seductive blend of beauty, eroticism and suspense.
A front-runner for this year’s Best Documentary Oscar, The Square looks at the hard, day-to-day realities faced by the people working to build a new democracy in Egypt following the early, optimistic days of the Arab Spring.
DIGITAL RESTORATION
Greenwich Village 1961 B.D. (before Dylan) and Llewyn Davis is a talented but struggling folk musician living from hand to mouth and sleeping on a series of friends’ sofas. Increasingly dejected by his resounding lack of success, Llewyn decides that it’s make or break and embarks on a last ditch attempt at fame, accompanied by his trusty guitar and a ginger cat…
The Armstrong Lie picks up in 2013 and presents a riveting, insider’s view of the unravelling of one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of sport. As Lance Armstrong himself says: “I didn’t live a lot of lies, but I lived one big one.”
In a picturesque lakeside cruising spot in southern France, men sunbathe nude and hunt for anonymous sexual encounters in the nearby forest. Handsome young romantic Franck develops relationships with two contrasting men: Henri, an older, portly man and Michel, a muscular and dangerous object of desire. Part beguiling love story, part noir murder mystery, Stranger by the Lake is a provocative and accomplished effort by one of France’s most overlooked auteurs.
Catapulting us into the action in 2011 and 2012, the film provides a kaleidoscopic, visceral window into the struggle. Cairo’s Tahrir Square is the heart and soul of this documentary, which follows several young activists, armed only with their values, determination, music, humour, social media savvy, and sheer obstinacy. They know that President Hosni Mubarak’s fall is only the beginning of a thorny path to democracy, and The Square explores how the life-and-death struggle between the people and the power of the state is still playing out.
Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. “This is instant A-list Coens; enigmatic, exhilarating, irresistible.”- Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph
“The Armstrong Lie is truly singular, a tale of ambition that’s almost mad enough to be mythic.” – Wall Street Journal Introduction by Marcus Smith, Associate Tutor, Open University, on Sun 2 Feb, 6.30pm
Inspired by recent French sex ring scandals involving men of wealth and power, Denis positions the superb Vincent Lindon as the movie’s moral and erotic centre. Lindon is a sea captain gone AWOL to come to the rescue of his estranged sister (Julie Bataille) and his teenaged niece (Lola Créton); Chiara Mastroianni is Lindon’s married lover, who has sold her soul in exchange for the security of her young son; and the remarkable Michel Subor is the very embodiment of an evil beyond comprehension.
Is there a more perfect description of ‘having the blues’ in cinema than Jeanne Moreau’s night-time stroll through the rainy, lamp-lit Paris streets, all set to Miles Davis’ mournful jazz score? One of French cinema’s greatest thrillers and the debut feature of the great Louis Malle, Lift to the Scaffold catapulted Jeanne Moreau to international stardom and ushered in the French New Wave. A handsome veteran of the Indo-China and Algerian Wars (Maurice Ronet) and his lover (Jeanne Moreau) plan the murder of her arms-manufacturer husband. But on his way from the crime scene he’s trapped in a lift, she anxiously walks the night streets of Paris waiting for him, and a teenage couple steal his car and gun…

An adaptation of the graphic novel written by director Lukas Moodysson’s wife Coco, We Are the Best! is a funny, observant tale revolving around three teenage girls in ‘80s Stockholm who decide to form a punk band – despite not having any instruments and being told by everyone that punk is dead. But this doesn’t stop Bobo and Klara from forming their own band with Hedvig, fellow student and loner, and rebelling against their parents, their school, and “disco music”. With a central and touching friendship between the girls, it’s both charming, and full of punk spirit.

With the support of the British Film Institute and National Lottery, Film Hub NI, led by QFT, will put Northern Ireland at the heart of the Film Audience Network and at the centre of film exhibition in the UK. Our first Welcome Day, held at QFT on the 7 December, was a great success with a variety of venues, film clubs and interested parties hearing from organisations such as the British Federation of Film Societies, the Independent Cinema Office and Access Cinema. We also heard from multiple award-winning Newcastle Community Cinema about their journey to becoming one of the most successful film societies in the UK.
