JIMMY’S HALL
FRI 30 MAY – FRI 13 JUN
(La Vénus à la fourrure)
VENUS IN FUR
FRI 6 – THURS 12 JUN
Dir: KEN LOACH • UK/IRELAND/FRANCE • 2014 • 1 Hr 49 Mins • Drama/HISTORY • Cast: Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Andrew Scott
DIR: ROMAN POLANSKI • FRANCE/POLAND • 2013 • 1 HR 36 MINS • DRAMA • CAST: Emmanuelle Seigner, Mathieu Amalric • SUBTITLED
The true story of Jimmy Gralton’s mission to energise a rural community in 1930s Ireland by reopening a dance hall is told by director Ken Loach in his latest (and possibly final) film.
Adapted from David Ives’ 2010 Tony Award-winning play of the same name, the latest New York theatre adaptation from Roman Polanski follows Thomas (Mathieu Amalric), a theatre director staging an adaptation from the Leopold von Sacher-Masoch novel.
In 1921, Jimmy Gralton’s sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads in an Ireland on the brink of civil war. As the hall grew in popularity, its socialist and free-spirited reputation brought it to the attention of the church and politicians, who forced Jimmy to flee to the US. A decade later, Jimmy returns to Leitrim and vows to live the quiet life. But as he sees the poverty and growing cultural oppression around him, the leader and activist within him is stirred. He makes the decision to reopen the hall in the face of the dangers it may bring.

ROAD
WED 11 JUN (PREVIEW), FRI 13 – THURS 19 JUN Dir: Michael Hewitt & Dermot Lavery • UK/IRELAND • 2014 • 1 Hr 42 Mins • dOCUMENTARY/SPORT • Cast: LIAM NEESON (NARRATOR)
Narrated by Liam Neeson, Road is the heartbreaking and adrenaline-fuelled tale of a family obsessed with road motorcycle racing – the most dangerous of all motor sports.
Frustrated by the quality of actresses he has auditioned, Thomas is about to give up, when mysterious Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) arrives in his theatre unannounced, knowing every line by heart. As the two begin a fevered, intense, and at times aggressive collaboration, the lines between passion and obsession (and theatre and reality), begin to blur.
For two generations, the Dunlop men have dominated the international road racing scene. This documentary takes the viewer on a blistering emotional ride with its heroes Joey, Robert, William and Michael, experiencing with them the victories, bumps and crashes both on and off the road. Featuring stunning action, candid race day scenes and a gripping narrative, Road is the story of two generations of one family that have been united by success. And united by tragedy.
Though originally designed for the stage, master filmmaker Polanski transforms this tense theatrical drama into a piece of pure cinema in the way that only he can.
Special preview screening plus live satellite Q&A with Michael Dunlop, William Dunlop and John McGuinness on Wed 11 Jun at 7pm. Tickets £8.

An illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral helps to end slavery in England.
Woody Allen plays a pimp and John Turturro his gigolo employee. Accept the brilliantly absurd premise and you’re in for a hilarious ride.
Visionary director Hayao Miyazaki delivers his farewell masterpiece – and once again defies the conventional limitations of animation.
Working from his own screenplay, Turturro sets up the crazy idea in quick, bold strokes, then goes on to explore just what it would mean to be a middle-aged man for hire. His characters are strong and unapologetic, including Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara who turn up as eager clients. But the film’s most surprising and affecting element is the romance that develops between the gigolo and an orthodox Jewish widow (Vanessa Paradis).
Jiro dreams of flying and designing aeroplanes. His bright intelligence and dedication will lead him to become an elite engineer, and creator of the state-of-the-art fighter bomber put into service just as Japan was contemplating war with the US.
“Turturro has given Allen his biggest and best on-screen turn in years: the part was written for him and it’s full of scope for aimble kvetching and nimble slapstick.” The Guardian
Japanese version with English subtitles
Belle is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode), an 18th Century British naval officer. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, but her colour prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. Yet, Belle uses her presence and intelligence to help inform the thinking of her father figure, Lord Mansfield, as he deliberates the most pressing issue of the time – the abolition of slavery. Introduction by Dr. Brian Kelly, School of History and Anthropology, Queen’s University Belfast, on Fri 20 June at 6.40pm.
FRI 30 MAY – THURS 5 JUN
This profound and beautiful film deftly combines Ghibli’s mesmerising style with an achingly beautiful love story, and asks hard questions about humanity, creation and invention.

Set against a backdrop of occupied Palestine, Omar is a tense drama about three childhood friends torn apart by political conflict and love.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize Sundance 2013 and Un Certain Regard Cannes, Fruitvale Station recounts the last twelve hours in the life of 22-year-old San Francisco Bay Area resident Oscar Grant.
A sexy and sophisticated French romantic drama about a May to December love affair.
Two best friends are filming a comedy about getting revenge on the bullies at their high school, but one of them isn’t joking.
Pantani returns to QFT for two screenings following its sold out preview as part of the Giro d’Italia celebrations.
Kinoteka On Tour continues with the best Polish comedy of 2014 and the surprise box office hit of the year. On its opening weekend in Poland, the film topped the box office with close to 200,000 viewers, beating American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Omar’s village is divided down the middle by one of the infamous separation walls; he lives on one side while his friends live on the other. Each day, braving armed guards, Omar scales the concrete barrier in order to visit his friends and plot their resistance to the occupation. Simultaneously and secretly, he also conducts a romance with his childhood sweetheart. When the friends hatch a plan to assassinate a guard, Omar finds himself in an impossible position, with no idea of who he can trust… Introduction by Cahal McLaughlin, Professor of Film at Queen’s University Belfast and Director of the Prisons Memory Archive, on Sun 15 June at 6.30pm. prisonsmemoryarchive.com
Moments after New Year’s Day 2009, Grant was shot by a policeman at the Fruitvale train station after an altercation. The policeman, whose actions were captured on numerous mobile phone videos, eventually went to prison but the damage was done and Grant (father of a four-year-old girl) died the next morning. His death led to local protests and a national discussion but the specifics of the life lost were largely ignored. An impressive debut feature by writer/director Ryan Coogler, who together with newcomer lead Michael B. Jordan, delivers a drama of emotional political weight.
An icon of French cinema, Fanny Ardant makes a welcome return to the big screen as Caroline, a newly retired dentist. Quickly realising that her newfound freedom has turned to boredom she takes the plunge and joins a seniors’ activity club. Almost immediately she strikes up a relationship with Julien, an IT teacher and local ladies’ man who is half her age. This soon turns into a passionate affair, complicated by their age difference, Caroline’s marriage and Julien’s string of other lovers. Bright Days Ahead is a tender and frank romance about taking control and enjoying your life at any age – even if it means breaking all the rules.
Along with his best friend Owen, Matt decides to take on a gang of bullies he dubs “The Dirties” in a no-budget revenge fantasy made for his high-school film class. All, of course, does not go as planned (actual bullying increases) and Matt comes up with the idea of making the film again, this time as a documentary, which tests Matt and Owen’s friendship, and brings to the fore how detached from reality Matt has become. Winner of multiple awards at American independent film festivals, The Dirties, although comedic, is paced and edited in such a dazzling way that its thematic seriousness shines through.
In 1998 Marco Pantani, the most flamboyant and popular cyclist of his era, won both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia a titanic feat of physical and mental endurance that no rider has repeated since. He was a hero to millions the saviour of cycling following the doping scandals which threatened to destroy the sport. However, less than six years later, aged just 34, he died alone, in a cheap Italian hotel room. Pantani explores the startling truth behind one man’s remarkable descent from being amongst the finest athletes on earth to his tragic end in a sport riven by intrigue.
After splitting up with her cheating boyfriend, Zosia (Katarzyna Maciag) has to start over as a single woman. Her situation is complicated by an old bet with her friend Anna (Joanna Kulig) over who is going to get married first. Zosia sets on a course to meet with all six of her former boyfriends and see if somewhere along the way she didn’t miss true love, and hopefully find that lucky number 7.

Matt Berninger, lead singer of The National, finally finds himself flush with success. His younger brother, Tom, is a loveable slacker still living at home with his parents in Cincinnati. On the eve of The National’s biggest tour to date, Matt invites Tom to work for the band as a roadie, unaware of Tom’s plan to film the entire adventure. What starts as a rock documentary soon becomes a darkly funny and surprisingly honest portrait of a charged relationship between two brothers, and the frustration of unfulfilled creative ambitions.
Michael Winterbottom’s film version of the hit BBC TV series The Trip to Italy reunites Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as they travel the length of Italy reviewing toothsome restaurants for The Observer. A boy wakes up to find that he’s alone in the world. A deserted, silent Copenhagen becomes his giant playground. Adapting a famous novel, Astrid HenningJensen, one of the greatest directors of children, makes an all-time classic of charm and wonder. (La petite vendeuse de soleil)
A school window is broken, and kids can’t concentrate because the rain is getting in. The culprit isn’t allowed back into class until he mends it. So he carries a large pane of glass by hand across the countryside in a gale. The wind blows; but will he crack? In the hands of writer Abbas Kiarostami and director Mohammad Ali Talebi, this simplest of stories becomes an epic quest, poetic and breathtakingly beautiful. It has big-hearted humanism, but Hitchcockian tension too. An edge-of-seat masterpiece. Unmissable.
A masterpiece about a little girl who won’t take no for an answer. Razieh wants a new goldfish to celebrate the Iranian New Year, even though she’s already got several. But tricking her mum into giving her the money is just the start of her adventure. What’s a white balloon got to do with it? You’ll have to wait to the end to find out. Utterly real, quietly hilarious, totally brilliant. In 2010, the Iranian authorities sentenced Jafar Panahi to six years for subversion, though he has yet to be sent to jail, and banned him from filmmaking for 20 years. Watch The White Balloon in solidarity.
Renko’s mum and dad are splitting up, and her heart is burning. So she plays with fire, tears up the rule book, holds herself hostage, even starts talking to the weird girl in school who’s the only other one with divorced parents. But as Renko watches her childhood go up in flames, she learns how to forge a new self from the embers. Director Shinji Somai is hugely regarded in Japan, but only starting to be known in the West, more than a decade after his death. Formally surprising and emotionally thrilling, Moving is the work of a remarkable filmmaker at the height of his powers.

Based on John Steinbeck’s novel and directed by Elia Kazan, 1955’s East of Eden is the first of three major films that make up James Dean’s movie legacy, and the last to be screened at QFT in a new restoration.
Now ravishingly restored, An Autumn Afternoon is the final work of Japanese master filmmaker Yasujirô Ozu (1903-1963).
In East of Eden, the 24-year-old idol-to-be plays Cal, a wayward Salinas Valley youth who, along with his competitive brother Aron (Richard Davalos), vies for the affection of his hardened father (Raymond Massey), making for a tragic Cain and Abel story. Playing off the haunting sensitivity of Julie Harris, Dean’s performance earned one of the film’s four Academy Award nominations, which included stellar performances throughout, including that of Jo Van Fleet who won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.
One of the greatest last films in all of cinema history, Ozu’s masterpiece is truly autumnal, charting the inevitable eclipse of older generations by irreverent youth. Revisiting the storyline of his earlier Late Spring (1949), Ozu collaborates once more with his regular screenwriter Kogo Noda and casts the familiar face of Chishû Ryû in the role of Hirayama, an elderly widower worried about the unmarried daughter who keeps house for him. Counselled on all sides to marry her off before it is too late, Hirayama plays matchmaker and reluctantly prepares to bid his old life farewell.

Award-winning photographers and directors Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot present a remarkably beautiful documentary that serves not only as a prime example of Earth’s beauty, but as an illustration of the dangers that threaten our ocean and our entire planet. The film’s goal is very clear: to change the way people look at the oceans and encourage them to imagine conservation as a globally-shared responsibility. In Bahia, Brazil, generations of impoverished families live in palafitas, shacks built on stilts over the ocean bay. When the government threatens to reclaim the bay in the name of ecological restoration, hundreds of families are about to lose their homes. Bay of All Saints is a lyrical portrait of three single mothers living in the water slums during this crisis. Their individual stories of poverty unfold through visits from Norato, their big-hearted refrigerator repairman, born and raised in the palafitas. As these women rise to fight for their future, they begin to see the bay in a whole new light.

TAKE YOUR SEAT Support the QFT Adopt a Seat campaign
“
QFT has a unique intimacy loved by its audiences. However, with only two screens, this also prevents us from covering our costs through ticket sales alone, and without additional support, we could simply not open our doors. Our seats have suffered most of all from their years of supporting keen filmgoers and are now very much the worse for wear. We would dearly love to replace our tired and worn cinema seats but require your help to do it! Now is your chance to contribute to the legacy of QFT in Northern Ireland by sponsoring a seat in our newly refurbished cinema.
