Dir: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne • BELGIUM/ITALY/FRANCE • 2014 • 1 Hr 35 Mins • Drama • Cast: Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Pili Groyne • SUBTITLED
Dir: Bruno Dumont • FRANCE • 2014 • 1 Hr 35 Mins • BIOGRAPHY /Drama • Cast: Juliette Binoche, Jean-Luc Vincent, Emmanuel Kauffman • SUBTITLED
Marion Cotillard excels in this tense social drama from the award-winning Dardenne brothers (The Kid with a Bike).
Juliette Binoche and writer-director Bruno Dumont join forces for this searching portrait of the troubled sculptor and her poet brother.
The threat of redundancy proves fertile ground for drama in the Dardenne brothers’ superb new film. Returning to work after a nervous breakdown, factory worker Sandra (Cotillard) finds herself caught in the horns of an impossible dilemma. While she has been off her bosses have reallocated her work to her colleagues – with the added sweetener of a €1000 bonus. Now she wants to come back and her workmates have been given a choice; sack Sandra and keep their bonuses or reinstate her and say goodbye to the money. In a last ditch attempt to save her job an increasingly desperate Sandra is given one weekend to convince each of her former colleagues to lend her their support…
Against this most blue-collar of backdrops the Dardennes have constructed a film which wrings every ounce of drama from its simple premise. In an outstanding performance as Sandra, Cotillard is twitchy, nervous and scrawny – a million miles away from the glamorous figure familiar from the red carpet. “…impassioned, exciting and moving – a Twelve Angry Men of the 21st-century workplace…” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Camille (Binoche) lives a seemingly uneventful life among the other inhabitants of an asylum near Avignon with whom she enjoys a quietly tender intimacy. Then she receives a visit from her brother, visionary Catholic poet Paul Claudel. Their relationship and Camille’s internment form the basis of a challenging inquiry into madness, the clinical system and the nature of religious and artistic inspiration. With the austerity you expect from Dumont, the film nevertheless carries an intense emotional charge and Binoche’s mesmerising, nerves-bared performance is one of her finest ever.

DIR: Hong Khaou • UK • 2014 • 1 HR 26 MINS • DRAMA • CAST: Ben Whishaw, Pei-pei Cheng, Peter Bowles • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED
QFT regulars Romain Duris and Audrey Tatou (last seen together in Chinese Puzzle) plunge headfirst into a surreal romance from writer-director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).
Intensely moving drama about love, loss and the limitations of language.
Duke Ellington’s “Mood Indigo” was heralded at the time of its 1930 release for its “upside down” jazz arrangement, where muted instruments were played at an opposite pitch than traditionally used. The song serves as a fitting title for Michel Gondry’s new film, which utilises all of the French filmmaker’s stylistic flourishes — off-the-wall characters, seemingly handmade special effects, blurred reality and fantasy — to tell a story steeped in melancholy, rather than his usual sense of romantic hope.
A beautiful love story that offers an often literal interpretation of the feelings we endure when we’re in relationships, Mood Indigo is Gondry’s return to the bittersweet territory he mined in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It’s also his most accomplished and powerful film in almost a decade. Romain Duris plays Colin, a wealthy inventor who decides that he’s inconsolably lonely after his best friend Chick (Gad Elmaleh) announces that he’s fallen in love. While attending a party with Chick and his lawyer Nicolas (Omar Sy), he meets Chloé (Audrey Tatou). Despite his insecurities, Chloé quickly falls for him, and they wed. But not long after the marriage begins, Chloé falls prey to an unusual illness, which Colin vows to fight — even if it costs him everything else in his life.
The debut feature from Hong Khaou, this soulful and heartfelt film stars Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Bright Star) as Richard, grieving for his dead lover Kai (Andrew Leung). Assuming responsibility for Kai’s mother Junn (Pei-Pei), Richard realises several things: she doesn’t speak a word of English and Kai never told her he was gay. Richard’s struggles as he tries to communicate with Junn provide the basis for this profoundly affecting film; full of warmth, tenderness and gentle humour. A warning – bring a tissue.

Dir: David Gordon Green • USA • 2013 • 1 HR 57 MINS • DRAMA • Cast: Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, Gary Poulter
A new film starring Nicolas Cage opening exclusively at QFT? This can’t be right. But set aside any preconceptions you might have because Joe is something very special indeed. Nicolas Cage is not the only one returning to his indie roots. Director David Gordon Green has helmed a shockingly varied range of films including All the Real Girls, Pineapple Express, Your Highness and Prince Avalanche. In this superb Southern Gothic drama, adapted from the novel by Larry Brown, he directs Cage in a remarkable performance as Joe Ransom, a hard-drinking tough guy with a violent past. A man who has done terrible things, Joe constantly treads a fine line, trying to lead a straight life, when the world around him seems to want to draw him back into his old ways. When he meets 15-year-old Gary (Mud’s Tye Sheridan), who suffers under

his abusive alcoholic father (a terrifying Gary Poulter), Joe takes the enterprising young man under his wing, and together they navigate a difficult world in search of redemption. “The film belongs to Cage. You can feel his compassion as Joe defies the reduced options of his life. There’s not an unfelt moment in Cage’s performance. Or in the movie.” – ROLLING STONE
Loosely based on the events surrounding the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Abel Ferrara’s riveting drama is a hell-for-leather tale of greed and excess, powered by a commanding performance from Gérard Depardieu. Mr. Devereaux (Depardieu) is a powerful man who controls billions of dollars every day. A man who controls the economic fate of nations. A man who dreams of saving the world and who cannot save himself. A terrified man. A lost man. Watch him fall. Ferrara is on home turf in New York and his camera prowls through the business magnate’s world, capturing every detail. Welcome to New York is an astonishing tale of power and sexual addiction.

Dir: Lucía Puenzo • ARGENTINA /SPAIN/NORWAY/FRANCE • 2013 • 1 Hr 33 Mins • Drama /HISTORY/THRILLER • Cast: Àlex Brendemühl, Diego Peretti, Guillermo Pfening • SUBTITLED
Mind-bending slice of sci-fi, blending live action and animation to stunning effect.
Fast forward twenty years and the world is a very different place – a cartoon world where everyone has an animated avatar. Robin is summoned to a mysterious congress and reality itself begins to break down…
Based on true events, acclaimed writer-director Lucía Puenzo (XXY) adapted her book, Wakolda, to create a dark and intense dramatic thriller about the hidden identity of the ‘German Doctor’.
While it is radically different in subject and tone to Waltz with Bashir, The Congress shares Folman’s previous film’s daring stylistic approach. Blending scathing satire with formal experimentation, The Congress is often bold, sometimes bewildering and always dazzling.
When a scientist befriends an Argentine family, in particular their young daughter Lilith, they unknowingly strike up a friendship with one of the world’s most terrifying war criminals, Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor who is on the run for his crimes in Auschwitz post World War II. As he starts to penetrate their everyday life and offer growth hormone therapy to Lilith, the family’s father becomes suspicious of this charismatic yet charming lethal man.
Based on the novel The Futurological Congress by cult Sci-Fi writer Stanisław Lem, Ari Folman’s trippy follow up to the critically acclaimed Waltz with Bashir takes the theme of stardom and celebrity and pushes it to the extreme. Fading star ‘Robin Wright’ (played to extraordinary effect by Wright herself), is facing the harsh realities of ageing in Hollywood. No longer getting the parts she wants, Wright accepts a lucrative offer from the ‘Miramount’ studio to have her image digitised, to become a virtual performer controlled by the studio; the catch is, she must never physically act again. Introduction by Marcus Smith, Associate Tutor, The Open University, on Mon 18 Aug at 8.35pm.

Beneath a Cicada Tree in the Sonora Desert, the Arizona border police discover a decomposing male body, identity unknown.
On August 12, 1990, in the badlands of South Dakota, paleontologist Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills Institute unearthed the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found.
The only distinguishing characteristic of this mystery man are the words ‘Dayani Cristal’ tattooed on his chest. Is this his name? That of a loved one? Exploring the notion of who or what might have brought him to this desolate spot, and how he might have died, Mexican star Gael García Bernal and British director Marc Silver take a trip to the heart of the immigrant communities trying to make their way to the Promised Land, discovering the human dignity and hopefulness lost in debates on immigration.
The Mon 4 Aug screening will be followed by a live on-screen Q&A with director Marc Silver.
It was the find of a lifetime— the world’s greatest dinosaur discovery. They named their dinosaur Sue. Two years later, when the FBI and the National Guard showed up, battle lines were drawn over ownership of Sue. The U.S. government, world-class museums, Native American tribes, and competing paleontologists became the Goliath to Larson’s David as he and his team fought to keep their dinosaur and wrestled with intimidation tactics that threatened their freedom as well. Dinosaur 13 chronicles an unprecedented saga in American history and details the fierce battle to possess a 65-millionyear-old treasure.
Dir: Eddie Martin • UK /AUSTRALIA • 2014 • 1 Hr 44 Mins • DOCUMENTARY • Cast: Tas Pappas, Ben Pappas, Tommy Caudill
All This Mayhem is a searing account of what happens when raw talent and extreme personalities collide. Legendary skaters and charismatic brothers Tas and Ben Pappas share an intense bond that not only propels them to the pinnacle of their sport, but also proves their undoing in this tragic story of Shakespearean proportions. Utilising hours of never-beforeseen footage taken throughout the brothers’ lives the film chronicles their meteoric rise to number one and two in the world and the heartbreaking personal and professional story that ensued. Touching upon their revolutionary styles, feuds with Tony Hawk, addiction, the darker side of fame, and immeasurable passion for their sport and each other, All This Mayhem is an epic story of having and losing it all.

In 2011, artist Patrick Brill (known creatively as Bob and Roberta Smith) made waves in the art world with Letter to Michael Gove, an oversized painted-word response to the (now former) Education Secretary’s proposed eradication of art from the British school syllabus.
Timely reissue of this multi Oscar-winning Vietnam War drama.
Put all memories of Grace of Monaco aside and experience the real Grace Kelly in Alfred Hitchcock’s sparkling crime caper.
In his feature film Art Party, Smith builds on his 2011 protest with a mix of performance, interviews and imagined scenes, en route to the 2013 Art Party Conference, where he and other speakers championed the importance of art and its place in the education system. Part documentary, part road movie and part political fantasy, Art Party ultimately asks “how do you tell one man he’s got it wrong?”
A slice of cinema history, Michael Cimino’s epic story of life, love and the Vietnam War helped to establish the careers of rising stars Meryl Streep and Christopher Walken (as well as a certain Robert De Niro). Five friends from a small Pennsylvanian town labour in the local ironworks’ blast furnaces by day and escape to hunt deer in their free time. Then the war in Vietnam starts and three of them go off to fight. Fast forward two years and, having survived a Viet Cong prison camp, the group is reunited. The horrors of war have left their scars however… Introduction by Dr. Aaron Hunter, Film Studies, Queen’s University, on Wed 6 Aug at 7.50pm.
As bubbly, light and sparkling as a glass of the best French champagne, Hitch’s glittering classic pairs the superbly suave Cary Grant with the supremely stylish Grace Kelly. A retired jewel thief, Robie aka ‘The Cat’ (Grant), becomes entangled with pampered heiress, Frances (Kelly). Is it Frances he is interested in or her mother’s jewels however. When a spate of robberies occurs, the question must be asked – is The Cat back on the prowl? Dazzling and irresistibly romantic – now that’s what I call Hollywood glamour.

Set in Moravia towards the end of WWII, Karel Kachyna’s forgotten masterpiece jumbles reality, memory and fantasy to capture the intensity of childhood in a war zone.
Sampei is a little rascal, the leader of his village gang, rallying his troops with the Tarzan cry of his hero Johnny Weissmuller.
Oldrich is the runt of his village, beaten by his father, bullied by the other boys. But he has imagination on his side, and a wiry toughness they can’t defeat. As the Nazis retreat and the Red Army advances, he dodges amid the mayhem, taking his share of blows but always managing to stay one step ahead. Darkly ironic and beautifully shot in epic widescreen, Long Live the Republic is a revelation.
But when his father is falsely imprisoned for fraud, his idyllic life falls apart. Sent to stay with his uncle, Sampei runs away any chance he gets – up a tree, down the river, to the circus. If only he can help his father to clear his name, everything will be all right again. Hiroshi Shimizu’s luminous masterpiece is nearly 80 years old, but still shines brightly.
The 400 Blows marks the birth of legendary nouvelle vague character Antoine Doinel; his is the story of a 13-year-old wild child whose adventures were based on director François Truffaut’s own adolescence.

A hugely imaginative, crowd-pleasing production of Shakespeare’s delightful comedy from the Globe’s Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole and starring Olivier Award-winning Michelle Terry.
Eve (Emily Browning) is a sad-eyed, elfin young woman absconding from a Glasgow rehab centre, where she’s being treated for anorexia. She falls for sensitive rock musician James (Alexander), and inspires him and his friend Cass (Hannah Murray) to find their groove – and with it, themselves. The film’s wistful, revelatory music comes from the pen of the film’s director and writer, Belle & Sebastian co-founder Stuart Murdoch. His directorial debut is infused with an infectious charm which, as seasoned producer Barry Mendel (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) explains, is “about the brief moment after you’ve realised what you want to do with your life.”
On Saturday 16 August, join us for a special preview of God Help the Girl, followed by a live set from Belle & Sebastian themselves – broadcast via satellite from Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange, and featuring songs from the film as well as the band’s own material. “A delightfully whimsical tale of summer fun.” – ROLLING STONE Tickets £8
Hermia loves Lysander, but is betrothed to Demetrius. So the lovers flee into the magical woods. Here, a group of ‘rude mechanicals’ are rehearsing a poorly written play which they intend to perform at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Meanwhile, a dispute between fairy king Oberon and queen Titania is about to unleash magic that will change the lives of everyone. Three stories intertwine deliciously in Shakespeare’s most popular comedy.
