It’s that time of year again when the film world is abuzz with talk about nominations and awards. This year is no exception with a remarkable range of films lining up for potential Oscars and BAFTA glory. Many of the nominees have already graced the QFT screens, while this month’s programme features an opportunity to catch up with two of the most talked about awards contenders, Birdman and Boyhood, along with new Oscar-nominated releases Selma and Inherent Vice. It’s too close to call at this stage, though here at QFT we all have our favourites (Whiplash! Birdman! Whiplash!) - one film we are all behind though is the short film Boogaloo and Graham by NI’s very own Michael Lennox – we’re keeping everything crossed! Given the media furore around awards season, it’s sometimes easy to forget that away from all the tinsel and glamour, many films carry an important social or political message. Like every other art form, film has an important role to play in reflecting, revealing or commenting on issues of global importance and our new programme Conversations About Cinema: Impact of Conflict, explores how film can play its part in raising awareness and sparking debate. Running until July 2015 this occasional programme of screenings, talks and events will look at how conflict and its aftermath have been represented in film. We’re encouraging everyone to join the discussion at www.conversationsaboutcinema.com @ConvoCinema Finally, a massive thank you to everyone who tweeted, Facebooked, signed our petition, submitted a response to the draft budget, or otherwise supported QFT over the recent Budget consultation process. Any new film from Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, The Master) is cause for celebration and the arrival of this new twisty thriller is no exception. Based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice follows drug-fuelled Private Investigator Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) - hired by his ex-girlfriend
Shasta (Katherine Waterston) to investigate a plot to kidnap her current lover (Eric Roberts). But when Sasha disappears Doc is drawn into a tangled story of drug-dealers, hustlers, dentists and hippie-loathing cops - all played out in the hazy sun of 1970s Los Angeles. Calling to mind Polanski’s Chinatown (if filtered through an acid-flashback) - Inherent Vice finds Anderson on mercurial and very funny form.

The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s poignant and passionate Selma tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (a magnetic David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history. Peter Strickland’s (Katalin Varga, Berberian Sound Studio) latest reconfigures the vintage erotic melodrama into something altogether deeper and darker – the story of an amateur butterfly expert whose wayward desires test her lover’s tolerance. We follow Cynthia, (Sidse Babett Knudsen, of acclaimed Danish television drama Borgen) a lepidopterist (the title of the film refers to a rare type of butterfly) who seems to treat her newly hired housekeeper Evelyn (Chiara D’Anna) with dismissive cruelty. In time we discover that they are entwined in a very curious, very particular sexual S&M relationship which Strickland invites us to view, but not judge. By turns kinky, dryly comic, and compellingly surreal, and boasting gorgeous, gothic cinematography and an enveloping score, The Duke of Burgundy is a richly immersive sensory experience.

After nearly four decades together, Ben and George (Lithgow and Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable place to live.
Director Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On) blends the romance of New York City’s streets and skyline with a delicate Chopin piano score to poignantly capture the lightness and sorrows of this modern-day love story. “Acting doesn’t get better than this. Released in July 2014 but not able to be screened at QFT until now, Boyhood is Richard Linklater’s masterpiece about the transition from youth to adulthood, filmed intermittently over 12 years. Boyhood is perhaps the favourite for awards glory (it already has a Best Motion Picture Golden Globe in the bag) but award winner or not, this is a stunning and completely unforgettable film, unlike anything you’ve seen before.

JOHN LE CARRÉ: SPIES ON SCREEN John le Carré (aka David Cornwell) is undoubtedly the world’s greatest living espionage novelist, whose critically acclaimed and hugely popular body of work, published since the 1960s, from The Spy Who Came in From the Cold through to the Smiley trilogy and beyond is so significant that it recast the genre. In this illustrated talk, Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, looks at le Carré’s own fascinating life (including a stint as a real life spy), his glittering career, the many classic filmed versions of his books and describes his own experiences meeting and interviewing le Carré about his work. This will be followed by a special 35mm screening of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, the first filmed version of a le Carré novel, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

TAKEOVER FILM FESTIVAL 2015 20-22 FEBRUARY
QFT’s Takeover youth panel ‘takes over’ QFT screens this month to present the fifth Takeover Film Festival, supported by the Community Relations Council NI. There will be NI premieres of feature, documentary and short local films, as the festival reflects themes of youth and diversity, all programmed and introduced by the youth panel. Also, John D’Arcy makes a welcome return to Takeover with his take on this year’s programme and the past year at the movies, with an audio-visual remix of film, sound and live performance in the QFT bar on Sat 21 Feb at 5.45pm.

A Korean exchange student in Japan, Ji-ho, plays matchmaker for her two lukewarm Japanese friends, teaching them all about love and letting loose a number of Korean-style love ‘jinxs’ on them. Featuring superstar K-pop group T-ARA idol Hyomin as its lead character, this romantic comedy delightfully explores romancing in different cultures through many enchanting, tear-jerking and heart-warming moments.

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CINEMA: IMPACT OF CONFLICT
A new strand of film screenings, events and conversations exploring the repercussions of conflict and the multiple ways these have been represented in and through film. Taking place over the next six months, until July 2015, this occasional series of screenings, events and online publishing and debate will explore the wider cultural, human and socio-political repercussions of conflict and the countless ways this has been presented through film both historically and in contemporary cinema. Our programme this month explores how some filmmakers have used very different creative approaches to explore the impact of conflict both locally and internationally. Presented as part of Conversations About Cinema: Impact of Conflict, a BFI FAN initiative led by Watershed in partnership with QFT, Chapter Arts and supported by the BFI’s Programme Development Funds from the National Lottery.

Ari Folman’s ground-breaking animated documentary charts his quest to recover his lost memories of the 1982 massacres at the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in Beirut.
