OFT FILM CARD VILLA TOUMA – see page 19

We all love to be entertained, to enjoy an escape from the realities of everyday life and cinema is, of course, the ultimate form of escapism. At other times we might want to be informed, provoked and stimulated and cinema has just as important a part to play in this – to present a wide range of ideas and make us see the world through fresh eyes. This month we have a decidedly thought-provoking theme with the inaugural Imagine! The Belfast Festival of Politics and Ideas, our ongoing Conversations about Cinema: Impact of Conflict programme and a special screening and discussion to mark International Women’s Day (March 8th) all making an appearance in our programme. Cinema can play its part, too, in inspiring new ideas and stimulating creativity and we are particularly proud to be presenting PlaySpace, a weekend of creative sessions, discussions and screenings, focussing on the ever-growing computer games industry and how it can interact with film. As well as screenings of gamer classics, Tron and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, there will be opportunities to hear from leading NI games developers, meet other games fans and, of course, play the games themselves (including the chance to play on the cinema screen). PlaySpace is supported by Jameson Irish Whiskey and Arts & Business NI and is presented in association with NI Science Festival and QUB Dragonslayers. It’s fair to say that fresh ideas are well and truly on display in this month’s new releases, including the terrifying It Follows, giving a new twist to horror, the barking mad but brilliant White God (think Cujo meets Lassie and you are on the right track) and the award-winning Catch Me Daddy, from up-and-coming director Daniel Wolfe. And then, of course, there is the profoundly powerful and moving Still Alice, starring the (rightly) Oscar nominated Julianne Moore. Finally, if it’s inspiration you are after, you can’t do better than to check out this year’s BAFTA Nominated Shorts (including, of course, NI’s own BAFTA winner Boogaloo and Graham). So, enjoy March at QFT and be inspired!

STILL ALICE FRI 6 – THURS 19 MAR DIR: RICHARD GLATZER & WASH WESTMORELAND • USA/FRANCE • 2014 • 1 HR 41 MINS

At age fifty, Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) has it all: a Columbia University linguistics professorship, a devoted husband, and three loving children. Her life is a whirlwind of work and family, and she thrives on it. But, while lecturing at UCLA, something unexpected happens: mid-sentence, she struggles to find a word. Though a seemingly innocuous relapse, the incident leads to a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, a stunning realisation that sees the bonds between Alice and her family thoroughly tested. Based on Lisa Genova’s 2009 novel of the same name, Still Alice is a frightening, heartbreaking, but ultimately inspiring drama featuring an astonishing BAFTAwinning performance from Julianne Moore – a firm favourite to win Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards – with Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart in not-to-be-overlooked supporting roles. Introduction by Mike Catto, broadcaster and arts critic, on Tues 10 Mar, 6.10pm. The 8.40pm screening on Wed 11 Mar will be an Access screening with audio description and on-screen captioning.

The Saga set are back! The follow-up to John Madden’s phenomenally successful comedy about a group of British retirees living the high life in India also stars Richard Gere as a new arrival, adding more charm and a little international spice to the heady mix of British thesps. THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY FRI 20 FEB – THURS 5 MAR

DIR: PETER STRICKLAND • UK • 2014 • 1 HR 44 MINS

Peter Strickland’s (Katalin Varga, Berberian Sound Studio) latest reconfigures the vintage erotic melodrama into something altogether deeper and darker - the story of an amateur butterfly expert whose wayward desires test her lover’s tolerance. By turns kinky, dryly comic, and compellingly surreal, and boasting gorgeous, gothic cinematography and an enveloping score, The Duke of Burgundy is a richly immersive sensory experience.

A hit at Cannes and the London Film Festival, this stylish, suspenseful horror from writer/director David Robert Mitchell follows 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), who is terrorised by a spectral figure after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter. ‘POISONED DARTS’: A SHORT SEASON OF SATIRICAL COMEDIES ‘Satire is moral outrage transformed into comic art.’ - PHILIP ROTH t a time when satire, and its underlying principles of free speech and social criticism, A has become not just a matter of political debate, but potentially of life and death, our season features some of cinema’s sharpest examples of the genre.

MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON MON 9 MAR, 6.30PM

DR. STRANGELOVE

OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB TUES 10 MAR, 6.30PM

DIR: FRANK CAPRA • USA • 1939 • 2 HRS 9 MINS

DIR: STANLEY KUBRICK • USA/UK • 1964 • 1 HR 34 MINS

Featuring a fine performance from James Stewart as our titular hero, Frank Capra’s much loved film shows American democratic ideals under threat from political corruption and complacency, with only the idealistic and the pure of spirit able to lead the nation back to its principles. Now why does that scenario sound familiar?

Do you ever feel as if the world is being run by madmen? Well, you’re not the first…Stanley Kubrick’s sharply paranoid Cold War satire takes this fear and runs with it. The ultimate comedy about mutually assured destruction, it asks what would happen if an actual madman became part of the system. Remember, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you…

FOUR LIONS

SUNDAY LUNCH: DUCK SOUP

WED 11 MAR, 6.30PM

SUN 15 MAR, 12.30PM (LUNCH), 1.30PM (FILM)

DIR: CHRIS MORRIS • UK/FRANCE • 2010 • 1 HR 41 MINS

DIR: LEO MCCAREY • USA • 1933 • 1 HR 9 MINS

Arch satirist Chris Morris’ 2010 comedy is almost spookily prescient in its depiction of the misadventures of four incompetent British Jihadists as they plot an act of terrorism. Now, looking back from 2015’s post-ISIS/ Charlie Hebdo perspective, Four Lions makes particularly unnerving viewing – life becomes a tragic imitation of Morris’ comic art.

The Marx Brothers are in fine anarchic fettle in this classic knockabout comedy. A subversive satire on militarism, nationalism and the pomposity of politicians, Duck Soup ruffled plenty of feathers on its 1933 release, with its cynical take on war and international politics at a time when the world was just waking up to the crisis of Nazism. Why not accompany this classic comedy with a lunchtime bowl of actual soup (probably not duck though), served in the QFT bar from 12.30pm.
