A GHOST STORY FRI 11 – THURS 24 AUG

DIR: DAVID LOWERY • USA • 2017 • 1 HR 32 MINS

With A Ghost Story acclaimed director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon) returns with a singular exploration of legacy, loss, and the essential human longing for meaning and connection. Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost (Academy Award-winner Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife (Academy Awardnominee Rooney Mara), only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and

history, confronting life’s ineffable questions and the enormity of existence. An unforgettable meditation on love and grief, A Ghost Story emerges ecstatic and surreal — a wholly unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll. “Opening in domestic contentment, moving through personal anguish and ending with a cosmic lament, it’s a simple, wrenching story of love and loss that pries open a window onto eternity.” – JUSTIN CHANG, LOS ANGELES TIMES ACCESS SCREENING The 6.40pm screening on Tues 22 Aug will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

DIR: AISLING WALSH • 2016 IRELAND/CANADA • 1 HR 56 MINS

Maudie tells the story of folk artist Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins) and the unlikely romance between Maud and hardened reclusive bachelor Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke). The partnership the two develop helps turn her into one of Canada’s premier folk artists, whose paintings hang in The White House. Eliciting performances of tremendous complexity and physicality from her leads, Aisling Walsh’s film is a profoundly inspiring story of a woman who transcended both her disability and the social mores of her time through her art, as well as a moving exploration of the human heart.

DETROIT FRI 25 AUG – THURS 7 SEPT

DIR: KATHRYN BIGELOW • 2017 • USA • 2 HRS 23 MINS

From the Academy Award winning director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Detroit tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked the city in the summer of ‘67.

to the point where the Governor was forced to call in the National Guard. When the riots were over, 43 people were dead, hundreds were injured, thousands were arrested, and many of the city’s buildings had been destroyed.

Kathryn Bigelow’s tense crime drama stars John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Will Poulter (The Revenant), Algee Smith (Earth to Echo) and Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton).

Detroit explores the systemic racism that led to arguably one of the most destructive civil disturbances in the history of the United States.

The film is set against the backdrop of the devastating Detroit riots that took place over five days in the summer of 1967, after police raided an unlicensed bar in the city’s Near West Side. The confrontation between the police and citizens quickly turned violent,

The film marks the third collaboration between Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who won an Oscar in 2010 for his screenplay for The Hurt Locker and received an additional nomination for his work on Zero Dark Thirty.

DIR: CHRISTOPHER NOLAN • UK/ NETHERLANDS/FRANCE/USA • 2017 1 HR 46 MINS

When 400,000 men couldn’t get home… home came for them. From filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy) comes the epic action thriller Dunkirk. Nolan directed Dunkirk from his own original screenplay, utilising a mixture of IMAX® and 65mm film to bring the story to the screen. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

LAND OF MINE FRI 4 – THURS 10 AUG

DIR: MARTIN ZANDVLIET • DENMARK/ GERMANY • 2015 • 1 HR 41 MINS SUBTITLED

Land of Mine, a 2017 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, exposes the previously hidden story of Denmark’s darkest hour in the immediate aftermath of World War II. In the days following the surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945, German POWs held in Denmark were put to work by the Allied Forces. With minimal or no training in defusing explosives, they were sent to remove in excess of two million of their own landmines from the Danish west coast. Brutal, believable and punctuated with gallows humour, Land of Mine sheds light on this historical tragedy.

TOM OF FINLAND FRI 11 – MON 14 AUG

DIR: DOME KARUKOSKI • FINLAND/ SWEDEN/DENMARK/GERMANY/USA 2017 • 1 HR 56 MINS • SUBTITLED

Award-winning filmmaker Dome Karukoski brings to screen the life and work of one of the most influential and celebrated figures of twentieth century gay culture. Touko Laaksonen returns home after a harrowing and heroic experience serving his country in World War II to find post-war Helsinki rampant with homophobic persecution. Touko finds refuge in his liberating art, specialising in homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhabitations. His work – made famous by his signature ‘Tom of Finland’ – became the emblem of a generation of men and fanned the flames of a gay revolution.

FINAL PORTRAIT FRI 18 – THURS 24 AUG

DIR: STANLEY TUCCI • 2017 • UK 1 HR 30 MINS

Writer/director Stanley Tucci takes a brief moment in the life of artist Alberto Giacometti and distills it into an amusing, sophisticated and insightful film about art, life and love. Final Portrait is based on young American art critic James Lord’s (Armie Hammer) memoir of how Giacometti invited him to sit for him in Paris in 1964, only to find his portrait sitting extending into days and weeks. With Geoffrey Rush in superb form as the wonderfully contrary artist, this chamber piece film is a finely mounted comedy drama full of bold brush strokes and artistic flourishes.

L’ODYSSÉE

THE ODYSSEY FRI 18 – THURS 24 AUG

DIR: JÉRÔME SALLE • FRANCE • 2016 2 HRS 3 MINS • SUBTITLED

Featuring a gleaming French cast including Audrey Tautou, director Jérôme Salle takes us on a voyage through the life of legendary French oceanographer, environmentalist and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau. Taking in locations from across the globe, The Odyssey is no hagiography; Salle gives us a flawed Cousteau, a visionary who struggled to reconcile his boundless ambition with his roles as a father and husband. Lambert Wilson brings a rakish charm and verve to Cousteau, a devil-maycare counterpoint to his wife, Tautou’s feisty and long-suffering Simone. Salle’s biopic pays fine tribute to one of France’s most enduring cultural icons.

Britain’s LGBT history is the inspiring subject of the fifth Britain on Film on Tour programme. With films spanning 1909 to 1994, it documents a century in which homosexuality went from crime to Pride, via decades of profoundly courageous activism, and the shifting attitudes to LGBT people and their rights across the board throughout a time of explosive social change. PRICK UP YOUR EARS FRI 25 – SUN 27 AUG

DIR: STEPHEN FREARS • UK • 1987 1 HR 50 MINS

50 years after the death of its subject, Stephen Frears’ rollicking Joe Orton biopic returns to cinemas. Gary Oldman stars as the controversial playwright and provocateur who rose from working class Leicester lad to the toast of swinging ‘60s London - not forgetting a brief pit stop in prison - before his promising future was cut short. Supported by an all-star cast, Oldman delivers outrageous one-liners and scandalous sexual barbs with a Cheshire cat grin in a film that captures the giddy charm of a true English eccentric and the tragedy of an artist lost in their prime.

VICTIM MON 28 – WED 30 AUG

DIR: BASIL DEARDEN • UK • 1961 1 HR 40 MINS

Victim is an exposé of London’s gay subculture and its associated criminal underworld - shocking on its first release, poignant and powerful today. Director Basil Dearden couples controversial subject matter and a strong genre slant to create a thriller that is both politically compelling and dramatically taut, while Dirk Bogarde sheds his matinée idol image with a bold performance that would initiate the actor’s second life as a performer in challenging, subversive roles. “The film's presentation of sexual oppression remains shockingly relevant to this day.” – DAVID JENKINS, LITTLE WHITE LIES

PLANET OF THE APES MON 28 AUG, 12.30PM

DIR: KEN HUGHES • UK • 1968 2 HRS 16 MINS

DIR: FRANKLIN J. SCHAFFNER • USA 1968 • 1 HR 52 MINS

The timeless musical fantasy starring Dick Van Dyke as a child-like inventor whose lovingly restored racing car reveals a little magic under its bonnet. This relaxed screening has been designed to be friendlier to people with cognitive and sensory disorders, autism spectrum conditions, or dementia, and is open to all.

There’s nothing quite like the original Planet of the Apes. The ‘68 simian sci-fi classic endures for a host of reasons: the production design, the makeup effects, Charlton Heston’s hairy chest, the brilliant script and, of course, composer Jerry Goldsmith’s iconic score.

From the moment Jane Fonda floats onto the screen in her lurid, saucy, shag-pile spaceship, a camp classic is born! Replete with fabulous sets and space couture costumes from Paco Rabanne, director Roger Vadim imaginatively captures the both forward-looking and fun spirit of the 1960s.

The decay of Rome reaches violent depths in Shakespeare’s most bloody play. Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society. Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC after her debut directing The Two Noble Kinsmen (2016).

Described by The Observer as 'One of the most important theatrical events of the last twenty years', the Donmar Warehouse presents the first part of Phyllida Lloyd's Shakespeare Trilogy. Lloyd takes her tense, arresting production of Shakespeare’s famous discourse on power, loyalty, and tragic idealism into a gripping version for screen. Please note that this is a recorded performance with no interval.
