Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special) directs Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga in the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, who were arrested in 1950s Virginia for the crime of getting married. The year is 1958 and the Civil Rights Movement has barely begun. Richard, a white construction worker, decides to propose to Mildred, a black woman. What should be a happy beginning to their life together soon becomes an arduous legal and political battle against the state and society. Driven out of their hometown, Richard and Mildred Loving spend almost ten years fighting for the right to live as a family in the town they consider home. They push their case as far as the Supreme Court, resulting in the landmark annulment of the discriminatory Virginian law banning interracial marriage.

Surrounding Dorothea’s small family is Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a 20-something woman who has recently survived a cancer scare and returns to her hometown to reassess her direction in life; and Julie (Elle Fanning), a teenager navigating the burgeoning independence of her adolescence and the responsibility it brings.
An ace soundtrack – which includes Talking Heads and The Raincoats – drives the story and its specific time and place, while the film’s impeccable production design draws the audience into the crumbling decay of its central location, so fully that viewers can almost smell the plaster. WANDA is thrilled to present a hugely important work from the feminist film canon, directed by Chantal Akerman. Starring Delphine Seyrig, the film follows the daily routine of widowed Jeanne as she cares for her grown-up son, does household chores and receives clients in the afternoon. The film was met with great critical success on its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1975, and propelled Akerman into a filmmaking career that would last until her sudden death in 2015.
Following the lives of abortion health care providers in the southern United States, Trapped reveals how recent legislation changes at best encroach on heath workers’ ability to care for patients and at worst lead to the closure of clinics. Director Dawn Porter embarked on the project when she heard the state of Mississippi had only one such clinic left. Along the way she found many warm and courageous health workers who feature in the film. The screening will be preceded by the short film Our Right To Choose (Dir. Hanan Dirya, 9 mins).
