LIFE, ANIMATED AUTISM FRIENDLY SCREENINGS OFT FILM O CARD Get discounted tickets plus invitations to special events, exclusive meal deals, free tea and coffee refills and much more. A fascinating and moving documentary about how an autistic boy learned to communicate through Disney films. As a child, Owen Suskind stopped speaking and was diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder, but his love for Disney films led his family to develop an extraordinary way of communicating with him. Against medical advice, they helped him find his voice through mimicking and channelling Disney characters. Oscar®-winning director Roger Ross Williams has made a joyous and mesmerising film that’s a celebration of difference, diversity and animation. For these screenings, low lights will be left on, the volume will be reduced, and it will be fine to move around and make noise. There will be no ads or trailers and the film will start at 11.30am. These subtle changes mean that people who have sensory difficulties have a more positive experience than they would in a traditional cinema setting.

SILENCE SUN 1 – THURS 19 JAN
DIR: MARTIN SCORSESE • USA/TAIWAN/MEXICO • 2016 2 HRS 41 MINS
Based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 novel by the same name, Silence has been a passion project for director Martin Scorsese for over 20 years. Set in the 17th Century, the film follows two Jesuit priests who face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to find their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) and propagate Christianity. The priests, Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garrpe (Adam Driver), arrive in a country that, under the Tokugawa shogunate, has banned Catholicism and forbidden almost all foreign contact. There they witness the persecution of Japanese Christians at the hands of a government that wishes to purge Japan of all western influence.
“The nature of secularism is fascinating to me, but do you wipe away what could be more enriching in your life, which is an appreciation or some sort of search for that which is spiritual and transcends? Silence is just something that I’m drawn to in that way. It’s been an obsession, it has to be done... It’s a strong, wonderful true story, a thriller in a way, but it deals with those questions.” – Martin Scorsese ACCESS SCREENING The 6.00pm screening on Tues 17 Jan will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

A MONSTER CALLS SUN 1 – THURS 19 JAN (NOT SCREENING MON 16 JAN)
DIR: J.A. BAYONA • SPAIN/USA/UK/CANADA • 2016 • 1 HR 48 MINS
A Monster Calls is a genuinely moving film of great wonder and beauty, directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage) and based on the hugely popular book by Patrick Ness. 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) is bullied by his classmates because he sees the world differently. His mother (Felicity Jones), with whom he has a very special bond, is suffering from a terminal illness. His bossy grandmother (Sigourney Weaver) has become increasingly controlling. And his unreliable father (Toby Kebbell) is perpetually absent. Suddenly, a wizened and mysterious yew tree materialises to provide Conor with some much-needed guidance (Liam Neeson’s voice is the perfect combination of melodic and imposing).
Bayona’s visually inventive filmmaking gives glorious form to this deeply moving story about a boy who draws on his expansive imagination to come to terms with impending loss. He brings together members of the award-winning creative team that worked on Pan’s Labyrinth and the film’s level of technical creativity is a sight to behold. Young Lewis MacDougall shines in a challenging role, tackling the part with emotional depth and eloquence. Beautifully atmospheric and highly emotive, A Monster Calls is a truly magical experience for audiences of all ages. ACCESS SCREENING The 6.20pm screening on Tues 10 Jan will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

LA LA LAND SUN 8 JAN (QFT FILM CARD PREVIEW) THURS 12 JAN – WED 1 FEB (NOT SCREENING MON 30 JAN)
DIR: DAMIEN CHAZELLE • USA • 2016 • 2 HRS 8 MINS
Banish those January blues with this glorious musical love letter to Los Angeles. Damien Chazelle’s previous film, Whiplash (2014), reinvented live jazz as an adrenalin-fuelled spectator sport full of blood, sweat and tears. With La La Land, this hugely talented director gives a similar shot of contemporary energy and verve to that most ‘Hollywood’ of Hollywood genres – the musical. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are our modern-day Fred and Ginger. Both have a suitably showbiz dream – pianist Seb (Gosling) dreams of running his own jazz club. Mia (Stone) is an aspiring actress with a day job as a barista on the Warner Bros studio lot. Their first brief encounter, during a traffic jam, is spiky and seems ill-starred. This is Hollywood however and, after a series of blunders and misunderstandings, love inevitably blossoms.
From its opening scene La La Land is alive with colour and spectacle and is a treat for the ears and the eyes. It’s a delight for film lovers too, packed full of clever and knowing references to the musicals of the past – to Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen and, in particular to Jacques Demy and his wonderful The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. This is a gorgeous confection of a film, full of colour and joie de vivre but with a bitter-sweet edge; it will send you dancing out of the cinema with joy in your heart and a smile on your face. See page 12 for our accompanying mini season of musical matinees. ACCESS SCREENING The 6.20pm screening on Tues 24 Jan will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

JACKIE FRI 20 JAN – THURS 2 FEB
DIR: PABLO LARRAÍN • CHILE/FRANCE/USA • 2016 1 HR 40 MINS
Provocative Chilean director Pablo Larraín (Tony Manero, No) depicts the events leading up to and following the assassination of JFK through the eyes of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (Natalie Portman). The assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 was one of those moments that defined a generation. That this handsome, charismatic leader with a beautiful wife and two young children could have his life ended so brutally defied comprehension. With Jackie, Pablo Larraín makes a brave choice by retelling this story solely through the eyes of Jacqueline Kennedy, casting Natalie Portman in a lead performance that is deeply intelligent and carefully measured. Structuring his film around Theodore H. White’s LIFE magazine interview with the First Lady at Hyannis Port a mere week after the
assassination, Larraín plunges us into the devastation using a series of finely crafted flashbacks that cover the fateful day in Dallas, Jackie’s return to the White House, arrangements for the President’s funeral, and her time spent accompanying her husband’s coffin to Arlington Cemetery. These sequences complete a moving portrait of a grieving woman — a widow and mother struggling with overwhelming tragedy and attention. Yet the core of the film is formed by quiet, profoundly intimate moments: Jackie’s conversations with her children, her brother-in-law Robert Kennedy (Peter Sarsgaard), one of her aides (Greta Gerwig), journalist White (Billy Crudup), and a Catholic priest (John Hurt). Larraín has moved beyond his native Chile to deliver a magnificent recreation of a defining moment in US politics and lore, and the woman we all knew as Jackie.

There he must deal with caring for his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges), coming back into contact with his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and confronting the weight of the past. “A poignant, surprisingly hilarious depiction of death, grieving, and small-town life.” – APRIL WOLFE, VILLAGE VOICE

DIR: RUTH BECKERMANN • AUSTRIA 2016 • 1 HR 29 MINS • SUBTITLED
A contemporary romance brings to life the historical correspondence between postwar poets and lovers Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann. In the comfortable confines of Vienna’s Funkhaus, two actors read the poet’s famous letters to each other. Slowly but surely, the writers’ intense emotions inhabit the bodies and faces of the two readers, filmed in close-up. With them, we re-live the aftermath of the Second World War as a pair of young people questioning the concept of love. The resulting film is a brilliant cross between observational documentary and essay film.

When the investigating officer (Do Won Kwak) finds that his daughter has been afflicted, a Korean shaman arrives to exorcise the demon, which sets into motion an ever-darkening story of fatherhood, suspicion and mythical forces...

DIR: LAURA ISRAEL • CANADA/ FRANCE/USA•2015•1HR22MINS
CERT TBC
This riotous documentary about legendary American photographer Robert Frank goes far beyond the traditional bio-doc. It takes an impassioned look at Frank’s creative process, starting with The Americans – the book that revolutionised photojournalism – before moving back and forth into his career, from his involvement with the Beats, the Rolling Stones and 1960s counter culture, to his lesser-known career in filmmaking. Director Laura Israel has been working as Frank’s editor for nearly 20 years and their long-standing friendship, and her remarkable editing skills, make this a unique, compelling and creatively rich documentary.

HOMO SAPIENS SAT 28 JAN, 4.00PM
DIR: NIKOLAUS GEYRHALTER SWITZERLAND/GERMANY/AUSTRIA • 2016 1 HR 34 MINS
Homo Sapiens is a film without dialogue about the finiteness and fragility of human existence. What will remain of our lives after we’re gone? Empty spaces, ruins, cities increasingly overgrown with vegetation: the areas we currently inhabit, though humanity has disappeared. Homo Sapiens is an ode to humanity as seen from a possible future scenario. It intends to sharpen our eyes for the here and now, and our consciousness of the present.
“For its sheer visual exaltation, this is the most extraordinary documentary I have seen in years.” – PETER BRADSHAW, THE GUARDIAN

DONNIE DARKO FRI 30 – SAT 31 DEC
DIR: RICHARD KELLY • USA • 2001 1 HR 53 MINS
This unique, mind-bending cult classic gets a loving restoration to celebrate its 15th anniversary. October, 1988. In the middle of the night, a man in a monstrous rabbit suit appears to Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), a troubled teenager living with his family in suburban Virginia, to tell him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. And so, a cult movie is born. Underappreciated upon its initial release in 2001, Richard Kelly’s film is ripe for rediscovery on the big screen.
HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE FRI 30 – SAT 31 DEC
DIR: TAIKA WAITITI • NEW ZEALAND 2016 • 1 HR 41 MINS
Say farewell to 2016 with the brief but welcome return of one of the funniest and most delightful films of the year. Writer/director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) has crafted an effortlessly funny odd-couple story about rap-loving troublesome teen Ricky (newcomer Julian Dennison) and gnarly gruff loner Hec (a wonderful Sam Neill) who end up being chased by police deep into the New Zealand bush. A compassionate, generous, engaging and laugh-out-loud funny film, it is a real movie pleasure.

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN SUN 15 JAN, 1.10PM
DIR: VINCENTE MINNELLI • USA • 1951 • 1 HR 53 MINS
DIR: GENE KELLY & STANLEY DONEN • USA • 1952 • 1 HR 43 MINS
With its lavish set pieces (including a 17 minute ballet sequence) and extravagantly colourful staging, Vincente Minnelli’s multi-Oscar winning musical is an obvious influence on La La Land. Inspired by an original composition by George Gershwin and set to his music, this exuberant musical stars Gene Kelly as the titular American following his dreams in a very picturesque Paris.
One of the greatest Hollywood musicals and, like La La Land, a sharply observant and very funny film about Hollywood itself, Singin’ in the Rain sees Gene Kelly at his all singing, all dancing best as a silent-movie star facing the uncertain transition to the ‘talkies’. A perennial classic.

DIR: STANLEY DONEN • USA • 1957 • 1 HR 43 MINS
DIR: GEORGE CUKOR • USA • 1954 • 2 HRS 56 MIN + INTERVAL
Stanley Donen’s ineffably stylish 1957 musical stars Fred Astaire as a world-famous fashion photographer who transforms a shy bookstore clerk (a supremely chic Audrey Hepburn) into a fashion model. Romance, of course, ensues. Made late in Astaire’s career, he is nonetheless as twinkle-toed as ever. In her first musical Hepburn is impressive, particularly in a dance scene set in a hipster (in the ‘50s sense) nightclub.
The Hollywood dream, and its dark side, is given the musical treatment in George Cukor’s 1954 epic. Full of song, drama and emotion, the film revolves around a spellbinding Judy Garland as rising talent Esther, discovered by fading matinee idol Norman Maine (James Mason). As her star rises, his descends – a classic tale of la la land. This really is Hollywood cinema at its best – an unmissable experience.
