THE BFG FRI 22 JUL – THURS 4 AUG

DIR: STEVEN SPIELBERG • UK/CANADA/USA • 2016 • 1 HR 57 MINS CERT TBC

2016 marks 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl and what better way to celebrate than with a brand new big screen version from Steven Spielberg. Sophie is an imaginative little girl living in an orphanage in London; every night, she stays up past the witching hour waiting for something magical to happen. But nothing ever does. That is, until she hears noises in the darkness… A ruckus in the alleyway, a massive hand reaching towards her, the adventure begins... The BFG takes Sophie to Giant Country, where she learns that not everything is what it seems, and not all ‘monsters’ are scary. After overcoming her initial fear, she gets to know the 24-foot-tall, big-eared man and finds out that, unlike the other, child-eating giants, he is a vegetarian who makes it his mission to bring good dreams to the children of the world.

As the two feast on snozzcumber and frobscottle, their friendship grows. But little girls aren’t typical residents of Giant Country, and the other giants begin to stir up even more trouble than usual. Sophie and the BFG decide to solve the giant problem once and for all, but they’ll need help from someone special… In this Disney take on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, Steven Spielberg teams up with renowned stage actor Mark Rylance (following their collaboration on Bridge of Spies), who voices the BFG. The supporting cast includes fresh face Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, and comedy talent in the form of Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live) and Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) as the bully giants. ACCESS SCREENING The 6.00pm screening on Tues 2 Aug will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

STUDIO GHIBLI FOREVER Studio Ghibli Forever is a celebration of the many wonderful films – for children and adults alike – from one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world. The films of directors such as Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata have long been celebrated as beautifully hand-drawn works of art that transport audiences of all ages to fantastical worlds filled with unforgettable characters.

This month’s CineSeekers Film Club screening is Howl’s Moving Castle. Set in a magical world of wizards and spells, the story follows the adventures of Sophie, a young girl trapped in an old woman’s body by an evil sorcerer’s curse. We have also added an extra ‘Schools Out’ summer screening of the English language version of When Marnie Was There on Thurs 21 July (see page 3). Screenings are original Japanese versions with English subtitles unless otherwise indicated. studioghibliforever.com

THE NEON DEMON

MAGGIE’S PLAN

FRI 15 – THURS 28 JUL

DIR: NICOLAS WINDING REFN • FRANCE/ USA/DENMARK • 2016 • 1 HR 57 MINS

Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive and Only God Forgives, returns with this uber-stylish horror thriller set in the fashion industry. When aspiring model Jesse (Elle Fanning) moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of models who will take any means necessary to get what she has. As is typical of Refn’s work The Neon Demon has divided audiences since it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. This is definitely not one for the faint of heart but hugely rewarding for those prepared to take the plunge.

KOLLEKTIVET

THE COMMUNE FRI 29 JUL – THURS 4 AUG

DIR: THOMAS VINTERBERG DENMARK/SWEDEN/NETHERLANDS 2016 • 1 HR 52 MINS • SUBTITLED

The new film from Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) is a change of pace from last year’s sumptuous Far From the Madding Crowd adaptation. Vinterberg is reunited with screenwriter Tobias Lindholm (The Hunt, A Hijacking) to present the story of Erik and Anna, an academic couple who set up a Danish commune in bohemian 1970s Copenhagen. What follows is a compelling clash between their personal desires and the dream of communal solidarity; as their ideal of tolerant socialist living is eclipsed by an earth-shattering love affair.

FRI 15 – THURS 21 JUL MATINEES: FRI 22 & MON 25 – THURS 28 JUL

REBECCA MILLER • USA • 2015 1 HR 39 MINS

Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha), Ethan Hawke (Boyhood) and Julianne Moore (Still Alice) star in a witty, literate and delightfully off-kilter romantic comedy. Thirtysomething New Yorker Maggie (Gerwig) is used to being in complete control of her life. Unable to find a suitable partner, she decides to become a single mother. But fate throws a spanner in the works when she falls for academic John (Hawke). Now she must lure him away from his collapsing marriage to domineering Georgette (Moore – who steals the show as a tightly wound Danish critical theorist).

ACCESS SCREENING The 4.00pm screening on Sun 17 July will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

ELVIS & NIXON FRI 24 JUN – THURS 7 JUL

DIR: LIZA JOHNSON • USA • 2016 1 HR 26 MINS

On a December morning in 1970, Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) shows up on the lawn of the White House to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Nixon (Kevin Spacey). It was a meeting that was forever immortalised in an iconic photo, but what compelled the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll to visit Nixon seemingly out of the blue? Elvis & Nixon goes behind the scenes of this bizarre encounter and reveals the true and untold story, to great comic effect.

NOTES ON BLINDNESS FRI 1 – THURS 7 JUL

FRI 15 – SUN 17 JUL

In 2011, the fatal shooting of Mark Duggan by the Metropolitan Police sparked intense riots in London.

After losing sight, John Hull knew that if he did not try to understand blindness it would destroy him. In 1983 he began keeping an audio diary.

The 6.30pm screening on Mon 4 July will be followed by a Q&A with directors Pete Middleton and James Spinney, and cinematographer Gerry Floyd.

A jury’s verdict of lawful killing shocked both his family and his community once again. For 28 months, director George Amponsah filmed around Broadwater Farm in Tottenham, where Duggan grew up, capturing his family’s distress and focusing on two of his best friends, Marcus and Kurtis, as they try to get on with their lives. What emerges is a profoundly humane, thoughtprovoking and topical testament, which gives a voice to people who are rarely heard.

DIR: JOSH KRIEGMAN & ELYSE STEINBERG USA • 2016 • 1 HR 36 MINS

The iconic 1916 film by Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell, featuring Laura Rossi’s acclaimed score commissioned by the Imperial War Museum.

Sexts, lies, and Carlos Danger: watch the wildest political meltdown in recent history as it unfolds. It’s 2013 and Anthony Weiner – still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier – is back in the spotlight as he mounts an audacious comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it’s not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage.

THE HARD STOP DIR: GEORGE AMPONSAH • UK • 2015 1 HR 25 MINS

DIR: PETE MIDDLETON & JAMES SPINNEY UK • 2016 • 1 HR 30 MINS

Over three years John recorded over sixteen hours of material, a unique testimony of loss, rebirth and renewal, excavating the interior world of blindness. In Notes on Blindness, actors lip-synch to the voices of the family, embedding John’s original audio recordings within compelling cinematography and textured sound design. The result is a poetic and intimate story, documenting John’s extraordinary journey into ‘a world beyond sight’.

“The gift that keeps on giving.” ««««« - THE GUARDIAN

To mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme, QFT and Belfast Somme 100 present this extraordinary and moving historical film, which remains one of the most successful British films ever made: almost half the population of the UK at the time watched the film, hoping to catch a glimpse of a friend or a loved one.

This is a FREE event made possible by Belfast City Council and Belfast Somme 100 – book in advance at queensfilmtheatre.com. The screening will be introduced by film critic and academic Mike Catto.

FRI 22 – THURS 28 JUL

DIR: ATHINA RACHEL TSANGARI • GREECE 2015 • 1 HR 45 MINS • SUBTITLED

New Greek Cinema auteur Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg) puts masculinity under a microscope in this hilarious and incisive study of the games men play. During a week-long excursion on a luxury private yacht, six men decide to pass the time by engaging in a game to determine which of them is “The Best in General.” As the competition escalates through a series of increasingly bizarre contests – which range from deck-swabbing to sleep posture to IKEA assembly – good sportsmanship goes out the window as the men jockey for position.

DIR: APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL THAILAND/VARIOUS • 2015 2 HRS 1 MIN • SUBTITLED

Apichatpong’s first feature since Palme d’Or-winner Uncle Boonmee... is as imaginative, sensuous and enigmatic as anything the Thai artist has made. Set in and around a temporary clinic set up for a group of soldiers afflicted by a mysterious sleeping sickness, the film centres on two women volunteers who befriend each other: Keng, a medium helping visitors to communicate with their loved ones, and Jenjira, who develops a particular interest in a patient whose secret notebook she finds. This gentle meditation on memory, myth and magic is seductively strange and serene.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY FRI 1 – SUN 3 JUL

DIR: STANLEY KUBRICK • UK/USA 1968 • 2 HRS 29 MINS

For many, quite simply the greatest Sci-Fi film ever made and the standard against which all others are still measured. Co-written by Stanley Kubrick and novelist Arthur C. Clarke, 2001’s epic canvas follows nothing less than the evolution of human ‘civilisation’ – from prehistoric apes through to mankind’s journey to the stars, all under the influence of mysterious black monoliths. A cinematic milestone and a film experience unlike any other. “There is only one Stanley Kubrick… 2001 is pure cinema.” - CHRISTOPHER NOLAN

BARRY LYNDON FRI 29 JUL – THURS 4 AUG

DIR: STANLEY KUBRICK • UK/USA/IRELAND • 1975 • 3 HRS 4 MINS + INTERMISSION

Legendary director Stanley Kubrick’s tenth feature film is one of Kubrick’s finest and most influential films and has been named as one of the greatest films ever made in polls including Sight & Sound and TIME. In this adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel about the exploits of an 18th century Irish adventurer, Ryan O’Neal stars as Redmond Barry (later Barry Lyndon) and Marisa Berenson is Lady Lyndon. Among the great supporting cast are Patrick Magee, Hardy Krüger, Diana Koerner, Leon Vitali, Steven Berkoff, Murray Melvin and Leonard Rossiter. Only a cinema screen can do justice to the stunning visuals of Barry Lyndon. Kubrick went

to incredible lengths in his research of the period in order to re-create it accurately. Inspired by painters such as Thomas Gainsborough and William Hogarth, the film has a beautiful, painterly look, enhanced by filming in natural or historically accurate light sources. Some scenes were lit only by candlelight, captured by the super-fast lenses of Oscar®-winning cinematographer John Alcott. To coincide with the re-release of Barry Lyndon, QFT is screening two of Kubrick’s other masterpieces, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining (see opposite). Please note: Barry Lyndon will include a 10-minute intermission.

THE SHINING MON 4 – WED 6 JUL

DIR: STANLEY KUBRICK • USA/UK 1980 • 2 HRS 24 MINS

A magnificent digital transfer of the longer, US version of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece of modern horror. The Shining is widely considered to be one of the most terrifying movies of all time. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, this tale of a family man and would-be writer (Jack Nicholson) going mad as winter caretaker of the cursed Overlook Hotel is a seminal work of the genre. It is also – as Martin Scorsese has pointed out – like no other horror film ever made: “essentially unclassifiable, endlessly provocative and profoundly disturbing.”

QFT has joined forces with the Belfast Film Festival, Cinemagic, the Nerve Centre and Strand Arts Centre to present 30 Under 30, a new season of must-see films to see before the age of 30.

QFT has selected six world cinema classics. These are films that subverted and, in some cases, created genres; breaking the rules of traditional narrative filmmaking in the process. From the structurally ambitious Rashomon to the visceral energy of City of God and the genre-defying Let the Right One In, these are films that deserve to be seen on the big screen by a new generation.

DIR: FRANÇOIS TRUFFAUT • FRANCE 1959 • 1 HR 40 MINS • SUBTITLED

The directorial debut of film critic François Truffaut, this autobiographical story of a wayward child marked a fresh start for French cinema.

30 Under 30 has been made possible by Film Hub NI with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Together with the first films of Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Chabrol, both former colleagues of François Truffaut at the film journal Cahiers du Cinéma, the release in 1959 of this lyrical tale of childhood heralded the arrival of a younger generation of French filmmakers who would revitalise their staid national cinema.

Credited with bringing Japanese cinema to worldwide audiences, Akira Kurosawa’s breakthrough tells the story of a murder in the woods from four differing perspectives.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE

In memory of Haynes Baptiste (1932-2016)

DIR: ROB REINER • USA • 1987 • 1 HR 39 MINS

Sweeping and visually resplendent, The Mission is a powerful action epic about a man of the sword (Robert De Niro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons) who unite to shield a South American tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th-century colonial empires.

THURS 14 JUL, 6.15PM

A delightfully postmodern fairytale, The Princess Bride is a deft, intelligent mix of swashbuckling, romance, and comedy that takes an age-old damsel-in-distress story and makes it fresh. Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, and Mandy Patinkin (yes, that is Saul from Homeland) star in this fairytale adventure about a beautiful princess and the gallant hero who rescues her from an evil villain. Directed by Rob Reiner (This Is Spinal Tap) with a screenplay by William Goldman (based on his own novel), it’s an enchanting and enduring classic.

DIR: RICHARD DONNER • USA • 1985 1 HR 54 MINS

Director Roland Joffé’s sweeping masterpiece features a mesmerising musical score by Ennio Morricone that weaves a stunning combination of church choirs and panpipes into the lush images of the Brazilian rainforest. 35mm screening.

The ‘80s adventure classic adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg. When their neighbourhood – affectionately dubbed “the Goon Docks” – is threatened by real estate developers, a group of pre-teen friends needs to find enough money to halt the demolition. Lucky for them, they’ve discovered an old treasure map, sparking an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of 17th-century pirate One-Eyed Willie. Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, and Joe Pantoliano star in the movie that captured a generation’s imagination. 35mm screening.

Workers at a remote Antarctic research station discover a parasitic alien that can invade, assimilate and imitate earthly lifeforms, leading to extreme paranoia as the twelve men try to work out who’s harbouring ‘the thing’. Underappreciated upon its initial release (critics felt the gore effects were overused), John Carpenter’s The Thing has been re-evaluated in recent years for its undeniably scary premise, bleak setting and foreboding atmosphere of dread, and is now considered one of the 1980s’ best horror films.
