THE BEGUILED FRI 14 – THURS 27 JUL

DIR: SOFIA COPPOLA • USA • 2017 • 1 HR 34 MINS

Sofia Coppola’s new film is a seductive thriller set in the Civil War era starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. Employing her distinctive aesthetic and sensual style, with The Beguiled Sofia Coppola adapts Thomas Cullinan’s Civil War-set novel into a tale of desire, jealousy and revenge. The film is set in 1864, three years into the Civil War, at a Southern girls’ boarding school. In these perilous times, the girls left at the school are those with nowhere else to go, and they are under the care of Martha Farnsworth (Kidman). When one of the younger girls discovers an injured enemy soldier, it is decided that the ‘Christian thing to do’ would be to take him in until he is sufficiently recovered. As the soldier, John McBurney (Farrell), recovers he becomes the subject of fascination for the girls and women of the house. The prim and proper environment is taken over with sexual tension and rivalries. In this society of virtually no men, the ‘real Southern hospitality’ meted out to McBurney is of a quite unusual kind. Coppola and the excellent cast deal with this material with relish, creating a film filled with eerie tension and flashes of mischievous humour. “Beneath the exquisitely rendered visual and atmospheric gild is a passionate and brilliantly observed lament for female sexuality left to go to seed.” – SOPHIE MONKS KAUFMAN, LITTLE WHITE LIES Also see SOFIA COPPOLA’S LA TRAVIATA (page 19). SECOND SIGHT

Our pick of restored and reissued classics, back on the big screen where they belong.

THE GRADUATE FRI 14 – THURS 20 JUL

DIR: MIKE NICHOLS • USA • 1967 1 HR 45 MINS

Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Graduate with a 4K restoration of Mike Nichols’ coming-of-age touchstone. Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman in his breakout performance), a recent graduate, collected every conceivable honour at university, yet the real purpose of life and the future is an elusive and intangible concept. Easily persuaded into an affair with the predatory Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), things become complicated when his parents insist he takes her daughter Elaine (Katherine Ross) out on a date. Throw Simon & Garfunkel’s songs into the mix and you have an American classic.

HOWARDS END FRI 28 JUL – THURS 3 AUG

DIR: JAMES IVORY • UK/JAPAN/ USA • 1992 • 2 HRS 22 MINS

Arguably the finest film of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory’s acclaimed partnership, Howards End celebrates its 25th anniversary by returning to screens newly restored as a 4K digital print. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Vanessa Redgrave and Helena Bonham Carter, this classic adaptation of E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel is a compelling tale of class relations and changing times in Edwardian England. Foreshadowing the style and spectacle of contemporary heritage dramas such as Downton Abbey and The Crown, the film remains a dazzling experience that demands to be seen on the big screen.
