ACCESS SCREENINGS QFT is fully wheelchair accessible with five wheelchair spaces in Screen 1 and four spaces in Screen 2. Free carer tickets for disabled customers are available on request. Both screens are fitted with an infrared assisted listening system with headphones. Audio enhancement is available for all screenings and audio description for selected screenings (check queensfilmtheatre.com/Whats-On/Access-Screenings for updates). Director Claude Barras uses gorgeous stop-motion animation to tackle difficult subject matter in this delicately told story about a young boy sent to a foster home after the death of his alcoholic mother. Based on a book by Gilles Paris and adapted by Céline Sciamma (Girlhood), this Oscar-nominated gem is a melancholy journey through childhood tragedy towards a brighter future, mature enough for both adults and children alike to appreciate. A dark and suspenseful romance based on the classic novel by Daphne du Maurier. It tells the story of a young Englishman (Sam Claflin) who plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin (Rachel Weisz), believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms. The second film version of du Maurier’s gripping Gothic thriller (following the 1952 version starring Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton), My Cousin Rachel was written and directed by Roger Michell (Notting Hill).

Australian writer-director Jonathan Teplitzky (The Railway Man) directs Brian Cox as one of Britain’s most prominent and complex icons, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, at a nail-bitingly crucial stage of World War II. Written by author and historian Alex von Tunzelmann, Churchill tells the story of the 48 hours before the D-Day landings in 1944. Drawing heavily on Churchill’s relationship with his beloved wife Clementine (Miranda Richardson), this immersive biopic reveals the terrifying anxieties, both personal and political, at the heart of a fascinating man and historical moment.

When a typhoon strikes one night, the broken family is forced to spend the night together at the home of Ryota’s mother, where the ensuing interaction – free of melodrama or forced catharsis – is tender, bittersweet, and quietly incisive, in true Kore-eda style.

Teresa Palmer stars in Cate Shortland’s thriller based on a book by Melanie Joosten. But what initially appears to be the start of a romance suddenly takes an unexpected and sinister turn when Clare wakes the following morning to discover Andi has left for work and locked her in his apartment. Written by Mark Cousins and Swedish writer-producer Anita Oxburgh, Stockholm My Love is a contemporary city symphony – a poetic and music-infused love letter to Sweden’s capital and the story of a woman’s journey through grief to recovery. The film’s images have been photographed exquisitely by the legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love) with Mark; they also worked together on the photography for I Am Belfast.

Cardboard Gangsters tells the story of a group of wannabe gangsters from Darndale, North Dublin, attempting to gain control of the local drug trade. Jay Connolly (John Connors) is a part-time DJ and small-time drug dealer. When his welfare is cut off he decides it’s time for him and his gang to enter the big leagues. This attracts the attention of the local King Pin and sets Jay down a violent and bloody path. Driven along by a powerhouse performance from Connors, this is an intense film from director Mark O’Connor, who manages to blend Scorsese-style panache with Ken Loach realism.

Their journey ends in Glasgow, with a chance to watch their beloved Celtic in action and experience a little slice of Scottish paradise. Both men prove to be great company in this snappy, extremely entertaining documentary.

Before directing numerous genre defining masterpieces such as Metropolis and M, Fritz Lang was already defying cinematic conventions with Der müde Tod (literally, The Weary Death). A young woman confronts the personification of Death, in an effort to save the life of her fiancé. Rich in expressionist imagery, Der müde Tod has often been overlooked, but has been hugely influential, with Hitchcock and Buñuel citing it as a direct influence on their work. This new restoration preserves the original German intertitles and simulates the historic colour tinting of its initial release, and is accompanied by a newlycomposed score by Cornelius Schwehr..

This is a rare chance to see the English version on the big screen.

This 1988 family adventure from Don Bluth (An American Tail) was the first animated feature film to be made in the Dublin based Sullivan Bluth Studios. A true children’s classic that stands the test of time.

The third programme from Britain on Film on Tour explores the vital history of black Britain throughout the 20th century. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head, placing the girl we call Salomé at the centre of a revolution. Internationally acclaimed theatre director Yaël Farber (Les Blancs) draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production which will be broadcast live from the National Theatre.
