SECOND SIGHT

Our pick of restored and reissued classics, and recent releases you might have missed.

GET OUT FRI 2 – MON 5 JUN

DIR: JORDAN PEELE • USA • 2017 1 HR 44 MINS

When a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family their superficially warm welcome masks an unthinkably dark secret in Jordan Peele’s brilliant horror-satire that combines genuine thrills with a no-holds-barred critique of black-white relations. Very creepy, very funny and positively fearless, Get Out has plenty to both frighten and enrage. Blending race-savvy satire with horror to especially potent effect, this bombshell social critique delivers a breathlessly suspenseful exposé of the horror of covert liberal racism.

“The most forceful and inventive American horror film since It Follows.” – TIM ROBEY, DAILY TELEGRAPH

DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST FRI 2 – WED 7 JUN

DIR: JULIE DASH • UK/USA • 1991 1 HR 52 MINS

In 1902 South Carolina, at a pivotal moment in American history, three generations of women in the Pezant family grapple with the decision to migrate north, leaving behind their well-preserved Gullah culture inherited from their West African slave ancestors. An avowed influence on Beyoncé’s album Lemonade, Daughters of the Dust broke new ground in its representation of black women on screen and continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike. Lovingly restored for its 25th anniversary, Julie Dash’s luminous masterpiece is a bold, stylish and evocative odyssey, which remains as vibrant and necessary as ever.

DER MÜDE TOD (DESTINY) FRI 9 – WED 14 JUN

DIR: FRITZ LANG • GERMANY • 1921 1 HR 38 MINS • SILENT WITH SUBTITLED GERMAN INTERTITLES

Before directing numerous genre defining masterpieces such as Metropolis and M, Fritz Lang was already defying cinematic conventions with Der müde Tod (literally, The Weary Death). A young woman confronts the personification of Death, in an effort to save the life of her fiancé. Rich in expressionist imagery, Der müde Tod has often been overlooked, but has been hugely influential, with Hitchcock and Buñuel citing it as a direct influence on their work. This new restoration preserves the original German intertitles and simulates the historic colour tinting of its initial release, and is accompanied by a newlycomposed score by Cornelius Schwehr..

POLLUX ET LE CHAT BLEU

Dougal and the Blue Cat is the magical, musical and frequently surreal feature film version from 1970 of one of the all-time favourite children’s TV shows, The Magic Roundabout. The original French series and feature film were presented in the UK with dialogue re-written in English by Eric Thompson who also narrated nearly all of the characters, lending each his own inimitable style and humour. This is a rare chance to see the English version on the big screen.
