DIR: OLIVIER ASSAYAS • FRANCE/GERMANY • 2016 1 HR 45 MINS • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED
Kristen Stewart continues to impress in this enigmatic fashionista ghost story from acclaimed director Olivier Assayas. Following their previous collaboration on the acclaimed Clouds of Sils Maria, Kristen Stewart reunites with director Olivier Assayas to play Maureen, a medium working in Paris as a personal shopper for a megalomaniacal A-list celebrity. Bored and frustrated by her job, Maureen only remains in France in an attempt to reach the spirit of her recently deceased twin brother. As time goes by, contact looks increasingly unlikely, until Maureen begins to receive strange text messages from an unknown source. sleek fashionista drama, part chilly murder mystery, part bewitching supernatural horror story, this elegant arthouse head-scratcher is hard to define and an absolute pleasure to watch. Give yourself over to its secrets and prepare to be hypnotised. Michael Blyth, BFI London Film Festival “Kristen Stewart’s performance is tremendous: she is calm and blank in the self-assured way of someone very competent, smart and young, yet her displays of emotion are very real and touching.” – PETER BRADSHAW, THE GUARDIAN ACCESS SCREENING The 6.20pm screening on Wed 22 Mar will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

UCHENIK
THE STUDENT TUES 14 – THURS 16 MAR
DIR: KIRILL SEREBRENNIKOV • RUSSIA 2016 • 1 HR 58 MINS • SUBTITLED
It is no coincidence that in Russian, the word for student, uchenik, is so close to the word for martyr, muchenik. In director Kirill Serebrennikov’s wildly kinetic masterpiece, both roles become blurred in the figure of Venya, a high school student who becomes obsessed with Christian doctrine. Empowered by his newfound faith, Venya embarks on a right-wing crusade to reform his school, challenging everything from bikinis to evolution to the industrial revolution. Adapted from Marius von Mayenburg’s play, Serebrennikov serves up a pointed satire of Russia’s tight-fisted control through the omnipotence of religion.

DIR: TERENCE DAVIES • UK/ BELGIUM • 2016 • 2 HRS 5 MINS

Terence Davies returns with an elegant and deeply moving biopic of poet Emily Dickinson, played with sensitivity and rebellious spirit by Cynthia Nixon. Dickinson never married, spent most of her life living quietly at home and was only recognised as the poetic genius she was after her death, when the vast majority of her poems were posthumously published. But, as embodied by Nixon, there was both intensity and a deep intelligence to her thought and actions, as she struggled under the yoke of deeply patriarchal social mores and conventions.

JOHN T. DAVIS IN CONVERSATION
John’s decidedly creative documentaries cover many subjects, but are drawn together by common threads: autobiography and self-portraiture through the lives of others, journeying and the quest for spiritual meaning, marginal places and outsiders, and music ranging from punk rock to gospel, western swing to dance hall reggae. This season is presented in partnership with Film Hub NI. Special thanks to Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Film Institute and Yellowmoon. Cover image by Peter Strain, peterstrain.co.uk. Join us as we launch Peripheral Visions with a look back at John T. Davis’ 40 year career. John will be in conversation with film critic and broadcaster – and John’s art school tutor in 1968 – Mike Catto. This event will also look to the future, as we present a preview of John’s latest project.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 2 HRS 15 MINS APPROX.
Three films from master documentarian John T. Davis which document the actual men, music and mayhem of Ulster punk in the late 1970s. Shellshock Rock captures and mirrors the rough aesthetic of the punk scene with much of the filming carried out in dingy bars, clubs and in Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations record shop. It features the music of Protex, The Undertones, Rudi, The Outcasts and Stiff Little Fingers. Dir. John T. Davis, 1979, 50 mins Protex Hurrah: Davis meets Belfast band Protex on a US tour in 1980. They are captured in playful mode as they mingle with the crowds during the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and later that night they perform at New York’s Hurrah Club. Dir. John T. Davis, 1980, 15 mins
Power in the Blood documents country gospel singer and preacher Vernon Oxford’s journey from his home in Franklin, Tennessee to Belfast on a mission to bring the healing power of Jesus back to Northern Ireland. John T. Davis follows Vernon into drinking dens, mission halls and the Prison Officers social club at the Maze Prison, where he speaks to the experience of many people, but particularly the Protestant working class people of faith. Dir. John T. Davis, 1989, 1 hr 16 mins On the street corners, in the tabernacles, at the cattle fairs and in large convention centres, the people of Ulster are warned by pastors and preachers about the last days of the Apocalypse. Dust on the Bible is a lyrical, visual poem about these latter day prophets. Focusing on Belfast’s charismatic street preachers the film traces the journey of a lonesome drifter seeking salvation in the gospel halls of this ‘troubled godforsaken place’. Dir. John T. Davis, 1989, 52 mins

DIR: JOHN T. DAVIS • UK • 1991 • 1 HR 30 MINS
DIR: JOHN T. DAVIS • IRELAND/UK • 1996 • 1 HR 18 MINS
Hobo is an intensely personal portrait of Beargrease, a man gripped with the chronic wanderlust. A fiercely independent individual, he embodies the traits of the classic American railroad vagabond.
The Uncle Jack is at once a portrait of John T. Davis’ maternal uncle John McBride Neill, the Ulster cinema architect who from the 1930s to the 1960s designed 18 cinemas in the province, and a self-portrait of Davis himself.
Beargreese has travelled all his life, as a sailor, a military engineer in Vietnam, then as a hobo riding the steel rails across the length and breadth of the United States. The film follows him and the fellow ‘bos he encounters on a journey, from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington, some 2,000 miles of bitter, cold, hard travelling on a track known as the Highline.
It was ‘the uncle Jack’ who catalysed Davis’ passion for filmmaking. ‘Jack was like a second father to me, and when he died, he left so much to me, his house, his inventions, his musical instruments, but most importantly, the 8mm camera that was to change my life forever.’
To make this remarkable film, John T. Davis set off on a dangerous, illegal journey across America. Hiding his camera in his bedroll, he jumped freight trains and led the life of a hobo, sleeping rough and scavenging food from dumpsters. This daring, visually exquisite film examines the limits of human endurance, questions the price of freedom and responsibility, and lays bare the thin thread by which our own reality hangs.
Through a montage of dramatic reconstructions, abstract sequences, contemporary narrative and diverse archival sources, Davis’ moving tribute to Jack is bound up with a deeply personal statement about the power of obsession and the drive towards creativity. IMAGE: HOBO, JOHN T. DAVIS

DIR: CHANTAL AKERMAN • BELGUIM/FRANCE • 2015 1 HR 53 MINS • SUBTITLED
The Pursuit is a reflection on the fight for LGBT rights, more than 50 years since protesters gathered in front of Independence Hall and called for an end to discrimination against homosexuals. Contrasting stories from LGBT experiences past and present, a complex and vibrant picture emerges that demonstrates both how far the community has come and how far there is left to go. Followed by a discussion chaired by Jo McParland, Regional Development Youth Officer for Cara–Friend Society.
This year QFT marks International Women’s Day with a tribute to one of cinema’s most significant and visionary female directors with a career spanning over 40 years. In October 2015 the feminist and avant-garde film-maker Chantal Akerman took her own life at the age of 65. No Home Movie was her final film, a documentary still-life study of her elderly mother, Natalia (or Nelly) Akerman, a Holocaust survivor born in Poland. Akerman was extremely close to her mother and Nelly’s death undoubtedly contributed to the profound depression that led to Akerman’s suicide. Introduction by Dr Jennie Carlsten, Film Lecturer, Ulster University.

Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Affair, Jane Eyre) plays the title role in a new version by Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal, Closer).

From the torment of the Hundred Years’ War, the charismatic Joan of Arc carved a victory that defined France. Bernard Shaw’s classic play depicts a woman with all the instinct, zeal and transforming power of a revolutionary. Josie Rourke (Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Vote, Coriolanus) directs Gemma Arterton (Gemma Bovery, Nell Gwynn, Made in Dagenham) as Joan of Arc in this electrifying masterpiece.
Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a new twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity. Simon Godwin (NT Live: Man and Superman, NT Live: The Beaux’ Stratagem) directs this joyous new production with Tamsin Greig (Friday Night Dinner) as a transformed Malvolia. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Daniel Rigby (Flowers), Tamara Lawrence (Undercover), Doon Mackichan (Smack the Pony) and Daniel Ezra (The Missing).
