Director Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash, I Am Love) returns with his second English-language feature, adapted from the novel by André Aciman. When research assistant Oliver (Armie Hammer) comes to visit, he and Elio find themselves drawn to each other, and a profound relationship develops between them. A minor incident escalates to a full-blown witch trial, where she is found guilty and sentenced to life on a state-run witch camp. The world’s first fully painted animated feature returns to QFT after its sold out Cinemagic screening in October. Loving Vincent stars Douglas Booth and Oscar-nominated Saoirse Ronan and took five years to make. Consisting of 65,000 oil painted frames produced by 115 professional artists, the film explores the life and controversial death of Vincent van Gogh, told by his paintings and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death.

What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover, quickly grows into a deeper relationship. The film features as fine a performance as you will see this year: Annette Bening's portrayal of Grahame. She is paired brilliantly with Jamie Bell, who breathes pure empathy into his role as Gloria's lover.

James Franco directs and stars in this uproarious ode to Tommy Wiseau, director of 2003's The Room. Famously considered one of the worst films ever, The Room has nevertheless become a cult favourite since its release, adored by repeat-viewing fans for its terrible acting and nonsensical plot, and Franco charts the tortured story behind the scenes in this often hysterically funny comedy. While wannabe actor Greg (Dave Franco) struggles to get into Hollywood, he bonds with his boisterous classmate Tommy (James Franco). Moving to LA together, they plot individual routes into the industry, but their careers fail to take off. After yet another rejection, they decide to cut out the middle man and make their own movie. But as the cameras start to roll, Greg discovers that, tragicomically, he has vastly underestimated Tommy's quirks and overestimated his talents. What could simply be a cruel send-up isn't - Franco gives a superb performance as Wiseau that utilises all the director's strange tics but is also highly sensitive;
whilst more broadly and affectionately exploring the notion that films widely defined as 'bad' may yet have something unique and 'good' to offer. A starry supporting ensemble - including Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Sharon Stone, Melanie Griffith, Judd Apatow and Bryan Cranston amongst many others - rounds out a dazzling comedy that, with awards buzz already building, may see Hollywood outsider Wiseau travelling to the Oscars after all.

Based largely on the real life of its Hasidic star Menashe Lustig, the film is a strikingly authentic and deeply moving portrait of family, love, connection, and community.

Despite a police investigation and subsequent re-openings of the case, no one has ever been charged for the murders. Alex Gibney reopens the original files and the reports that followed, conducting an exhaustive and fascinating inquiry and uncovering a shocking case of collusion and cover-up.

Like Collins’ acclaimed Silence, Song of Granite is both audacious and perfectly accessible as it chronicles Heaney’s life from boyhood in 1940s Connemara to fame and further exile in North America, from the mid1960s to his death. This heartwarming documentary follows a year in the lives of two unconventional and inspirational teachers at Headfort, an enchanting 18th century boarding school in Ireland. The pace is hectic and the mood infectious as the eccentric couple works their magic in hilarious fashion on fertile young minds. But for pupil and teacher alike, there is poignancy in discovering that leaving is the hardest lesson to learn.

Unrest is, at its core, a love story. How Jen and her new husband forge their relationship while dealing with her mysterious illness is at once heartbreaking, inspiring and funny.

Following its sold out screening in August, Dispossession returns for a second screening and post-film discussion. Directed by Paul Sng and narrated by Maxine Peake, Dispossession explores the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. The film focuses on the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in London, Glasgow and Nottingham, and investigates how the state works with the private sector, making properties that are unaffordable to the majority of people in the UK. The UN stabilisation mission in Haiti, MINUSTAH, was mandated to provide security following the forced removal in 2004 of President Aristide. There was no armed conflict, but there was civil unrest. One problem MINUSTAH faced, during its 2004-17 operations, was violence by ‘bandits’ who operated from poor districts in the capital Port-au-Prince. In response, MINUSTAH began a series of heavily militarised raids, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of scores of local people. For the first time, survivors of these raids in the Bois Neuf neighbourhood tell their story.

Missing Believed Wiped is a campaign run by the British Film Institute and the television heritage organisation Kaleidoscope devoted to tracking down and screening material missing from the television archives. For the first time, Missing Believed Wiped is coming to Northern Ireland when it will be screening finds dating as far back as November 1962. These will include a mix of complete television programmes and compilations of extracts from both Northern Ireland and across the UK. During the day, there will be an opportunity to see a newly-found episode of Z Cars from 1962, featuring Belfast actor James Ellis, the only surviving example of UTV’s children’s series, For the Very Young from 1964, a rare example of BBC NI’s traditional music series Music Room (with Maureen Hegarty) from 1973 and a recently discovered special edition of Spotlight, from 1977, on the UUAC (United Unionist Action Council) strike led by Ian Paisley. There will also be a chance to see a specially-made animated trailer for Monty Python’s Flying Circus, some local television adverts and missing bits from a range of programmes including Romper Room, Top of the Pops and Shut That Door. Not to be missed! Missing Believed Wiped Northern Ireland at QFT has been organised by Kaleidoscope and the Centre for the History of Television Culture and Production at Royal Holloway, University of London and is supported by Northern Ireland Screen, Film Hub NI and the Belfast Film Festival.

Action-maestro Ryoo Seungwan launched onto the Korean cinema scene in 2000 with this sensational debut that was made on a budget of just 65 million won (£45,000) over a period of three years as four short films that were then woven together. The film follows how the lives of two young men - Suk-whan (played by Ryoo) and Sung-bin (Park Sungbin) - change when Sung-bin accidentally kills another student in a brawl. 35mm screening.
The second directorial feature from Park Hoon-jung, the screenwriter behind The Unjust and I Saw the Devil, New World is a noirish gangster epic in which undercover cops and shady policemen plot from the shadows to gain control of Korea’s biggest crime syndicate, Goldmoon, when its CEO is killed in a suspicious car accident. In this world of habitual double crossing and confused identities, no one can be trusted and the only certainty is betrayal.
Opening with a conversation about food followed by sudden, murderous violence, and fracturing its chronology into separate timelines, this latest feature from Byun Sunghyun owes a certain debt to Quentin Tarantino, but is also a moody neo-noir, all existential musings, rain-swept treachery and savagery just out of shot. Whether inside prison or out, ruthless gangster Jae-ho (Sul Kyung-gu) and his new young protégé Hyun-su (Yim Si-wan) struggle to trust each other in a world of endless double-dealing and betrayal.
