When a rowing boat washes ashore containing a dead man and a baby girl, Isabel implores her husband to keep the child and pretend that she’s their own. Against his better judgement, he gives in. Amma Asante (Belle) directs this impassioned drama depicting an interracial romance that changed the world. A United Kingdom is a powerful testament to the defiant and enduring love story of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana) and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the government of the time. Director Amma Asante follows her previous film Belle with another elegant, impassioned drama that also reveals a painful episode in the history of British race relations and imperial politics. At a London dance, there is an immediate spark of attraction when the erudite and dashing Seretse (David Oyelowo) meets the independent-minded Ruth (Rosamund Pike). Ignoring the opposition of friends and family, they plunge into a whirlwind romance that leads rapidly to marriage. Reality sets in when, having
completed his studies, Seretse has to return to Africa to assume his duties as King. Their interracial union is seen as a slap in the face both to Malan’s apartheidriven South Africa and to the royal traditions of Seretse’s own people. As the international diplomatic crisis escalates, the British Government sets out to do everything in its power to drive the couple apart. Anchored by commanding performances from Oyelowo and Pike, Asante’s filmmaking relishes the contrasts between the cool, subdued tones of London and the colour-saturated heat of Botswana, employing cinematography and design to heighten the emotional register of Guy Hibbert’s (Eye in the Sky) acutely observant screenplay. A United Kingdom is a film of great contemporary relevance, one that celebrates the triumph of love and intelligence over intolerance and oppression, and which confirms Asante as one of the UK’s most distinctive and important filmmakers.

Ford collaborates for the first time with maestro cinematographer Seamus McGarvey to striking effect, fusing colour-saturated melodrama with overheated, neo-noir. In this fast, fun and freaky zombie-fuelled thriller from South Korea, a group of terrified passengers fight their way through a viral outbreak while trapped on board a blooddrenched bullet train. Director Yeon Sang-ho (The King of Pigs) makes the leap from animation to live action with Train to Busan, and in the best tradition of classic zombie movies, he employs a strong social commentary, critiquing his country’s class system as well as its controversial reaction to the 2012 MERS virus, all while unleashing an avalanche of propulsive, adrenaline-fuelled action and horror.

When Mathilde reaches the convent, she discovers several heavily pregnant nuns, petrified by fear and shame. This is a poignant story of birth and rebirth, shattered faith and female solidarity.

Emerging from Ann Arbor, Michigan, amidst a countercultural revolution, The Stooges’ powerful and aggressive style of rock’n’roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s. Assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B, and free jazz, the band (which introduced Iggy Pop to an unsuspecting world) planted the seeds for what would be called punk and alternative rock in the decades that followed. Join us in celebrating some of cinema’s greatest talents in Black Star, a major new season from the BFI, continuing until December. This month we focus our attention on Oscarwinning actor, producer and director Forest Whitaker in anticipation of the 25th anniversary of The Crying Game in 2017. Explore the wildly varied
career of one of cinema’s greatest unsung heroes with screenings of his finest work. Also this month we present the centerpiece of the Black Star season – a timely re-release of John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood, one of the most important American films ever made.
Black Star provides a meaningful and high-profile platform for audiences to explore a galaxy of black actors through history, spotlighting the creativity and charisma of trailblazing performers, and celebrating the transatlantic wave of black British talent currently breaking across our screens.

Ice Cube makes his acting debut alongside Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in John Singleton’s game-changing first feature film which depicts life in South Central Los Angeles, where random violence is a way of life. Remarkably, John Singleton was just 23 when he wrote and directed what is now recognised as a seminal film, one that was instrumental in ushering in a new phase of black filmmaking in the US. The story focuses upon Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a young man who is trying to navigate life in a
community ravaged by drug addiction, poverty, gangs and police harassment. Hard-hitting and direct, Singleton’s story has an authenticity that is ably delivered by a fine cast and, 25 years on from its first release, feels as urgent and relevant as ever with racial tension between black communities and the police in the US at fever pitch. Writer-director John Singleton was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, making him the youngest ever nominee for Best Director, and the first African-American to be nominated for the award.

An unlikely friendship develops between a kidnapped British soldier (Forest Whitaker) and his captor, an IRA volunteer named Fergus (Stephen Rea). When the hostage-taking ends up going horribly wrong, Fergus escapes and heads to London, and becomes embroiled in an elaborate web of sexual and political intrigue. In New York City, LGBTQ+ youth-of-color gather out on the Christopher Street Pier, practicing a performancebased artform, Ballroom, made famous in the early 1990s by Madonna’s music video Vogue and the documentary Paris Is Burning. Twenty-five years after these cultural touchstones, a new and very different generation of LGBTQ+ youth have formed an artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene. We follow seven LGB and trans people from the Kiki community over the course of four years, their
preparations and spectacular performances, battles with homelessness, illness and prejudice as well as their gains towards political influence, the conquering of affirming gender-expressions and their preparations to leave home, some for the first time, to perform at a certain queer arts festival in Northern Ireland... Twiggy and Chi Chi will introduce Kiki with a special performance at 8.45pm before the film. Thompson’s sixth feature charts the decade-long friendship and eventual fallout between Cézanne, who was born into a wealthy family but struggled to make a living as a painter, and Zola, who came from a family of more straitened circumstances but achieved fame and prosperity as a politically-engaged novelist.

The luminous fourth feature from Danielle Arbid (Beirut Hotel) is a coming-of-age story about a young woman from Beirut whose relationships and encounters reveal different facets of her new country, and of herself.
The first international co-production from renowned Japanese animation giant Studio Ghibli enlists the talents of Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit, who co-wrote the film with French filmmaker Pascale Ferran, for a wondrous story about the unlikely friendship between a castaway on a deserted island and an enormous sea turtle.
Lina (promising newcomer Manal Issa) is 18 years old, serious, and strong-willed. She’s just arrived in Paris from Beirut to start university and had planned to stay with her uncle, but he turns out to have an unhealthy interest in her. She flees and finds herself on the street. Luckily, she has a magnetic charm that draws people to her. It’s not long before new school friends offer her a place to stay and Lina begins her immersion in Paris life. Using a fluid, intimate style, Arbid charts the stages of Lina’s evolution – in intellectual, emotional, and sexual terms – from naive migrant to the Parisienne of the title.
The Red Turtle luxuriates in the magic of life and the cycles of nature. Its languorous, entirely wordless storytelling arouses the senses, inspires wonder, and invites viewers to cast themselves in the central role. All the hallmarks of a Ghibli film are here – not least of all, the studio’s compassionate treatment of humanist themes – rendered in de Wit’s singular animation style. It’s an artistic partnership that has given us one of the year’s finest cinematic experiences.

THE MARSEILLE TRILOGY Marcel Pagnol’s beautifully wrought romantic dramas known as The Marseille Trilogy spans 20 years in the lives of its lead characters. The trilogy has been restored in collaboration with his grandson, Nicolas Pagnol.
Pagnol’s original play was a huge stage hit. With the arrival of sound, Pagnol seized the opportunity to adapt it to film. Marius, the first instalment, is set in the colourful Old Port of Marseille, where ordinary but lovable characters are coping with everyday problems. There’s Marius, a humble barkeeper who is torn between his wanderlust for exotic ports of call and his unspoken love for Fanny, the fishmonger’s beautiful daughter, who harbours a secret love of her own. Marc Allégret took over directorial duties for the luminous second instalment, Fanny, and Pagnol himself directed the final film in his trilogy, César, set 20 years after Marius. The three films poignantly explore the drama and humour inherent in the relationships of these unforgettable characters. To describe the story of each film would only contain spoilers so we’ll leave that for you to discover! These are three QFT Sunday matinees you don’t want to miss.

The film tells the tragic story of Diouana, a young Senegalese woman who finds work as a childminder for a French couple in Dakar. When the couple return to the south of France, she goes with them, dreaming of a life of luxury and fine clothes on the Côte d’Azur. However, things don’t turn out as she planned. Sembène’s “perfect short story,” wrote Manny Farber, “is unlike anything in the film library: translucent and no tricks, amazingly pure, but spiritualized.” A formative and eye-opening work, and one of Sembène’s finest.
