I, DANIEL BLAKE FRI 21 OCT – THURS 3 NOV

DIR: KEN LOACH • UK/FRANCE/BELGIUM • 2016 • 1 HR 40 MINS

For fifty years Ken Loach has made brave, challenging and, at times, derided films. Beginning with Cathy Come Home in 1966 he has consistently shone a light on social issues; homelessness, inequality, injustice and poverty. Now, at 80, he has made what might be his final film, I, Daniel Blake, and what a film it is.

of course is that, fifty years after he began making films, we still need his honesty, compassion and anger.

On one level the story of an everyman battling a Kafkaesque bureaucracy, Loach’s film is an excoriating critique of the English benefits system and a culture which paints those in need as ‘shirkers’.

“…blunt, dignified and brutally moving.” - PETER BRADSHAW, THE GUARDIAN

A carpenter by trade, with a lifetime of work behind him, widower Daniel (Dave Johns) suffers a heart attack. Judged unfit for work by his doctor, when he tries to get the benefits he is due he comes up against the full box-ticking might of the Department for Work and Pensions and so his nightmare begins. With this simple, dignified film, Ken Loach has created a tragedy for our times - the real tragedy

Powerful, honest and at times unbearably moving, I, Daniel Blake is not an easy watch – but it is an important one. This is a film that everyone must see.

The 6.00pm screening on Mon 24 Oct will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the issues raised in this important film – see queensfilmtheatre.com for more details.

ACCESS SCREENING The 6.20pm screening on Sun 30 Oct will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

AMERICAN HONEY FRI 14 – THURS 27 OCT

DIR: ANDREA ARNOLD • UK/USA • 2016 • 2 HRS 44 MINS

One of British cinema’s brightest talents, Andrea Arnold’s latest sees her swap the Essex council estates of Fish Tank (2009) and the windswept moors of Wuthering Heights (2011) for the long, hot and dusty roads of middle-America in this tale of a young woman discovering herself. Inspired by a New York Times article about door-todoor magazine sales crews, Arnold’s film follows 18-year-old Star (an impressive performance from newcomer Sasha Lane), as she abandons a brutal home life and takes to the road, drawn in by the charismatic crew manager, Jake (a no-holds barred Shia LaBeouf). With the rest of the crew, an assortment of misfits, pranksters and party animals (all played by nonprofessional actors), Jake, and his hard-faced girlfriend/boss, Krystal (Riley Keough), Star embarks on a journey across an America that is very different

to that shown in most films. Arnold has always had a grittily authentic eye and here she magnificently captures the heat and dust, boredom and despair of small-town America. Ostensibly a road movie, if American Honey is about anything it is a film about being young, free and full of hope for the future. Full of boundless energy, the film starts with Star and Jake locking eyes in Walmart to a pulsing soundtrack of Rhianna’s ‘We Found Love (in a Hopeless Place)’ and rarely lets up from there. Long and languorous, American Honey is a film that sweeps you along with it for the ride. ACCESS SCREENING The 8.50pm screening on Tues 25 Oct will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE FRI 30 SEPT – THURS 6 OCT

DIR: TAIKA WAITITI • NEW ZEALAND 2016 • 1 HR 41 MINS

One of the funniest and most delightful films of the year, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a pleasure from beginning to end. Writer/director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) has crafted an effortlessly funny odd-couple story about raploving troublesome teen Ricky (newcomer Julian Dennison) and gnarly gruff loner Hec (a wonderful Sam Neill) who end up being chased by police deep into the New Zealand bush. A compassionate, generous, engaging and often laugh-outloud funny film, it is a real movie pleasure.

A DATE FOR MAD MARY FRI 14 – THURS 20 OCT

Back home, everything and everyone has changed. Her best friend, Charlene (Charleigh Bailey), is about to get married and Mary is maid of honour. When Charlene refuses Mary a ‘plus one’ on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary becomes determined to prove her wrong…

THE LOVERS AND THE DESPOT TUES 4 – THURS 6 OCT

DIR: ROBERT CANNAN & ROSS ADAM • UK 2016 • 1 HR 38 MINS • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED

The history of Hollywood is replete with bizarre tales, but for sheer strangeness few can match the one recounted in this gripping film that illuminates a dark chapter of Korean cinema lore. In 1978 North Korean dictator (and movie buff) Kim Jong-il kidnapped a famed South Korean celebrity couple – actress Choi Eun-hee and director Shin Sang-ok – hoping their star wattage would invigorate his burgeoning moviemaking empire. A seamless blend of interview, recreation and archival footage, the film features rare recordings of the dictator, secretly taped by the captive lovers.

A GOOD AMERICAN THURS 13 OCT, 9.15PM

DIR: FRIEDRICH MOSER • AUSTRIA 2015 • 1 HR 41 MINS

Bill Binney was the best codebreaker in US history. After the Cold War, he developed a revolutionary surveillance tool that was cheap and efficient, and didn’t invade anyone’s privacy. He developed it right up until the NSA scrapped it - three weeks before 9/11. In its place the NSA chose a surveillance system that generated profit and spied on its own citizens instead of its enemies. This system remains in place today. A Good American dissects the inner workings and ties of a politico-economic network whose reach goes way beyond America.

One of the great movies about World War Two and the German Occupation, this semiautobiographical film, set in January 1944 at an exclusive Catholic boarding school outside Fontainebleau, is the key work director Louis Malle waited 42 years to make.

A huge international hit when it was released, this is a chilling, thrilling glimpse into life behind the wall in 1980s Berlin and the secret workings of the dreaded Stasi.

DIR: MICHAEL ROEMER • USA • 1964 1 HR 35 MINS

The true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man sold into slavery in mid-19th century America. Steve McQueen’s screen adaptation was nominated for a slew of Oscars, eventually taking home three, including Best Picture – the first film by a black director/producer to win. Chiwetel Ejiofor is superb as Northup, disbelieving and horrified at the turn his life has taken.

Adapted from Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Stephen Spielberg’s film version was a huge box-office hit, launching Oprah Winfrey’s film career and introducing Whoopi Goldberg to audiences across the world. Centring on the story of Celie, a black woman in early 20th century America, and the challenges and prejudices she encounters, The Color Purple is an epic, heartrending saga.

This landmark of American cinema – one of the earliest and most authentic depictions of black life in the segregated South – was reputedly Malcolm X’s favourite film and rightly won great acclaim at the Venice, London and New York film festivals. Though it then sank into relative obscurity, a recent restoration by the Library of Congress has again made its many virtues gloriously apparent.

SELMA TUES 25 OCT, 6.10PM DIR: AVA DUVERNAY • UK/USA • 2014 2 HRS 8 MINS

Capturing a pivotal moment in history for the Civil Rights movement director Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the story of Martin Luther King’s involvement in the three Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965, which ultimately led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act, prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Starring as King, David Oyelowo puts in a spellbinding performance that saw him win awards across the globe.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER? WED 26 OCT, 6.30PM DIR: STANLEY KRAMER • USA • 1967 1 HR 48 MINS

Blazing a trail for black actors in the 1960s, Sidney Poitier was a truly international star. Released in 1967, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? takes the controversial subject of interracial marriage, in this case between Poitier’s successful medical expert and a WASP princess, and gives it a decidedly Hollywood gloss with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as his potential in-laws.

Putting aside the classical repertoire that propelled his fame, the cellist Yo-Yo Ma has spent the last two decades assembling musicians for his Silk Road Ensemble. Drawing from the personal biographies of four international musicians, director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) chronicles a musical experiment that also unveils the difficult realities of exile and migration.

Director Vladimir Tomic boarded the Flotel Europa in Copenhagen as a teenager in the early 1990s, along with his older brother, mother and 1,000 other refugees from the former Yugoslavia. Through video messages, they recounted their lives in limbo to loved ones back home. Via the refugees’ own home movies Tomic reflects back in this timely and unusual coming-of-age film.

As the Berlin Wall fell, people eagerly hailed a new borderless world. Over 25 years later, it seems more divided than ever before. Brilliant editing connects people living and working on different sides of divisive walls around the world. A true cinematic experience that doesn’t enter geopolitical discussions directly, but rather explores the consequences of division as a global issue.

#MyEscape shows the journey that refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and Eritrea chose to undergo, as the circumstances in their home countries became increasingly unliveable, by using footage shot by the refugees themselves. Reflective in-depth interviews with the protagonists connect the outer journey that they went on to the one that took place within. Supported by the Goethe-Institut London.

TONY CONRAD: COMPLETELY IN THE PRESENT SAT 22 OCT, 6.30PM

DIR: TYLER HUBBY • USA • 2016 1 HR 34 MINS

Tony Conrad (who died in April aged 76), was one of the great American artists of our time, yet to the world at large he remains virtually unknown. Since the early 1960s, Conrad’s experimental films and droning musical compositions have been the stuff of legend. Conrad was an early member of the Velvet Underground; he toured with Sonic Youth in the ’90s; and spent decades re-wiring generations of young minds as a university professor. This film traces Tony’s incredible history and his joyful approach to art making.

Bela Lugosi takes his first bite out of Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror classic. Donning the nowiconic black cape and stirring the children of the night into a frenzy, he laid the foundation for future generations of movie vampires, the horror genre more generally and a career that became synonymous with the bloodthirsty Count.

A bloodthirsty Count travels to England to prey on innocent young women in this Spanishlanguage version of the Dracula story, filmed at night on the same sets as Tod Browning’s celebrated English-language adaptation.

THE MUMMY

THE INVISIBLE MAN

DIR: KARL FREUND • USA • 1932 • 1 HR 13 MINS

DIR: JAMES WHALE • USA • 1933 • 1 HR 11 MINS

Tapping into a vein of curiosity surrounding the “curse of the pharaohs” – Tutankhamun’s tomb had been opened a decade earlier – and riding the success of Frankenstein, Boris Karloff created another iconic monster in Imhotep: a vengeful ancient Egyptian priest who seeks to be reunited with his true love after 3000 years.

Claude Rains’ big break as a horror star came after Boris Karloff turned down the role of Dr. Griffin H.G. Wells’ scientist turned spectral psychopath. Made invisible by an experimental drug – and helped along by some impressive matte work and trick photography – Rains conjures his considerable screen presence through voice alone.

THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

THE WOLF MAN

DIR: JAMES WHALE • USA • 1935 • 1 HR 15 MINS

DIR: GEORGE WAGGNER • USA • 1941 • 1 HR 10 MINS

Following directly on from the events of Frankenstein, Karloff’s monster finds himself at the mercy of enraged townsfolk and an uninterested bride, memorably realised by a shock-eyed, tower-haired Elsa Lanchester. One of the most successful Monster franchise spin-offs, James Whale’s last foray into horror resulted in a creation that stands shoulder to shoulder with its formidable predecessor.

Lon Chaney, Jr. played many of the classic Universal Monsters in the course of an extensive career, but his most memorable role was that of Larry Talbot: a young man who haunts the wilds of Wales after turning into a werewolf. Support comes from Claude Rains and Bela Lugosi, with Jack Pierce’s meticulous make-up work again taking centre stage.
