We at QFT believe everyone should be able to experience great films: every month we offer a range of accessible screenings and activities ensuring everyone can enjoy QFT’s unique programme.

Ryan Gosling joins Harrison Ford in Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s genre-defining sci-fi classic. Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Following last year’s remarkable sci-fi headscratcher Arrival, director Denis Villeneuve takes the reins from Ridley Scott (who gets an Executive Producer credit
here) to bring us one of the most anticipated sequels in movie history. Jared Leto, Robin Wright and Ana de Armas round out the main cast. The cinematography is by Roger Deakins (Hail, Caesar!, Sicario), and the music by Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival), Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk) and Benjamin Wallfisch (It) – inspired by Vangelis’ original electronic score. QFT has long been a supporter of Villeneuve’s films, from the more ‘arthouse’ fair of Incendies (2010) and Enemy (2013) to the mainstream success of Sicario (2015) and Arrival (2016). This gripping homegrown whodunnit gradually becomes an explosive revenge story when middle-aged Irish farmer Donal (Nigel O’Neill) is confronted by a terrible tragedy in his own home. When it turns out to be far more sinister than the botched breakin it was painted to be, his quest for vengeance exposes a web of intrigue with dangerous links to the past. Bad Day for the Cut is an impressive debut feature, full of nail-biting tension and expertly handled action, with a highly endearing hero at its heart.

Based on the true story of the 1983 mass breakout of 38 prisoners from the HMP Maze high security prison, Maze is a gripping prison break drama that follows the relationship between two men on opposite sides of the prison bars. As Larry Marley (Tom VaughanLawlor, Love/Hate), the chief architect of the escape, schemes his way towards pulling off this feat, he comes into contact with prison warder Gordon Close (Barry Ward, Jimmy’s Hall). Initially Larry and Gordon are confirmed enemies but when Larry realises that Gordon may be unwittingly useful for his escape plan, a slow seduction begins.

While Oliver slips effortlessly into the heady rhythm of the Italian
summer – al fresco dining, bicycle rides and midnight swims – Elio’s casual flirtation with local girlfriend Marzia (Esther Garrel) is soon eclipsed by a more sensual, volatile attraction. From Elio’s amusingly bad-tempered renditions of Bach to The Psychedelic Furs’ Love My Way and three perfectly attuned songs by Sufjan Stevens, this is a film that luxuriates in classical art, poetry and music as much as it relishes the candy-coloured new romance of its early ‘80s setting. Guadagnino, working from a screenplay by James Ivory, lingers on fleeting moments of desire, jealousy and affirmation, giving a sublime depth to Elio’s transcendent and ravishingly queer awakening. “In attaching sinuous style and casual sexiness to a universal ache, [Luca] Guadagnino has come away with real wisdom. SERGEI M. EISENSTEIN: THE LANGUAGE OF CINEMA Born in 1898 in Riga, Latvia, Sergei Eisenstein became one of the most world-renowned filmmakers and film theorists of the 20th century bringing a revolutionary spirit to the art of film, in particular his ideas around montage. Coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution in October 1917, portrayed in Eisenstein’s film October (1928), this season of films pays tribute to one of cinema’s most influential figures, a leading architect of the language of cinema. All films in this season are presented in 35mm format.

Lenin famously declared that 'film was the most important art' for the Bolsheviks, but died before the new Soviet cinema got started. As the tenth anniversary of the October revolution approached, there was competition and controversy over how it should be marked on screen. Co-directed with Grigori Aleksandrov, Eisenstein’s October is an epic recreation of the events that led to the storming of the Winter Palace in October 1917. A stunning achievement in cinema, October is powerful, personal and controversial – initially banned, with its first British screenings only taking place in 1935.
Regularly cited on ‘Greatest Films’ lists, the two parts of Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible are epic in scope and awesome in visuals. The first film, released in 1945, was much admired by Stalin, for whom Ivan was a personal hero. Part II however was suppressed by the censors and a third planned film was unfinished at the time of Eisenstein’s death in 1948. Tickets £10 (£8 concessions and Film Card holders).

On 27th July 1890 a gaunt figure stumbled down a drowsy high street at twilight in the small French country town of Auvers. The man was carrying nothing; his hands clasped to a fresh bullet wound leaking blood from his belly. This was Vincent van Gogh, then a little known artist; now the most famous artist in the world. Was it an accident? Was it suicide? Loving Vincent sets out to explore one of art’s great mysteries. The film is the world’s first fully painted animated feature, five years in the making, consisting of 65,000 oil painted frames produced by 115 professional artists.
