BLADE RUNNER 2049 FRI 6 – THURS 19 OCT

DIR: DENIS VILLENEUVE • 2017 • UK/USA/CANADA • 2 HRS 43 MINS CERT TBC

Ryan Gosling joins Harrison Ford in Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s genre-defining sci-fi classic. Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Following last year’s remarkable sci-fi headscratcher Arrival, director Denis Villeneuve takes the reins from Ridley Scott (who gets an Executive Producer credit

here) to bring us one of the most anticipated sequels in movie history. Jared Leto, Robin Wright and Ana de Armas round out the main cast. The cinematography is by Roger Deakins (Hail, Caesar!, Sicario), and the music by Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival), Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk) and Benjamin Wallfisch (It) – inspired by Vangelis’ original electronic score. QFT has long been a supporter of Villeneuve’s films, from the more ‘arthouse’ fair of Incendies (2010) and Enemy (2013) to the mainstream success of Sicario (2015) and Arrival (2016). We can’t wait to see where he takes us in Blade Runner 2049. ACCESS SCREENING The 6.00pm screening on Tues 17 Oct will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME FRI 27 OCT – THURS 9 NOV

DIR: LUCA GUADAGNINO • 2017 • ITALY/FRANCE/BRAZIL/USA 2 HRS 12 MINS

A rapturous study in passion and desire from the director of I Am Love and A Bigger Splash. In every way as languorous and seductive as its North Italian setting, Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of André Aciman’s coming-of-age novel is a sun-kissed, cinematic ode to the ecstasy and exquisite pain of first love. Timothée Chalamet is riveting as Elio, a musically gifted 17-year-old whose idyllic summer break takes a tumultuous turn when Oliver (Armie Hammer) arrives to stay at the family palazzo. The physical embodiment of ancient Greco-Roman beauty, Oliver is an all-American doctoral student on a 6-week research trip working with Elio’s father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an antiquities professor. While Oliver slips effortlessly into the heady rhythm of the Italian

summer – al fresco dining, bicycle rides and midnight swims – Elio’s casual flirtation with local girlfriend Marzia (Esther Garrel) is soon eclipsed by a more sensual, volatile attraction. From Elio’s amusingly bad-tempered renditions of Bach to The Psychedelic Furs’ Love My Way and three perfectly attuned songs by Sufjan Stevens, this is a film that luxuriates in classical art, poetry and music as much as it relishes the candy-coloured new romance of its early ‘80s setting. Guadagnino, working from a screenplay by James Ivory, lingers on fleeting moments of desire, jealousy and affirmation, giving a sublime depth to Elio’s transcendent and ravishingly queer awakening. “In attaching sinuous style and casual sexiness to a universal ache, [Luca] Guadagnino has come away with real wisdom. Sweet and salty, his movie burns like a suntan.” – JOSHUA ROTHKOPF, TIME OUT

THE PARTY FRI 20 OCT – THURS 2 NOV (NOT SCREENING SAT 28 & MON 30 OCT)

DIR: SALLY POTTER • 2017 • UK • 1 HR 11 MINS

CERT TBC

British director and screenwriter Sally Potter's (Orlando, Ginger & Rosa) eighth feature – a political comedy wrapped around a tragedy about a dinner party gone very wrong – features a spectacular cast including Kristin Scott Thomas, Emily Mortimer, Cillian Murphy, Timothy Spall and Patricia Clarkson. Janet (Scott Thomas) has just been appointed Shadow Heath Secretary, the crowning achievement of her career, and decides to celebrate by hosting a few close friends. But as the guests arrive her husband Bill (Spall) makes a shocking announcement, leading to a cascade of explosive revelations and unravelling the soiree even before the canapés are served.

As people’s illusions about themselves and each other – whether romantic, political or existential – go up in smoke, a night that began with champagne ends with blood on the floor. Described by Potter as an anti-Brexit statement about a 'broken England', it's a savage satire of the middleclass, exploring the deeper truths behind seemingly liberal convictions with insight and a killer wit. “A deliciously heightened, caviar-black comedy that sets up its brittle, bourgeois characters like bowling pins and gleefully knocks them down in 71 minutes flat.” – GUY LODGE, VARIETYa ACCESS SCREENING The 4.20pm screening on Sun 29 Oct will include audio description and on-screen captioning.

DIR: PETER MACKIE BURNS • 2017 UK • 1 HR 28 MINS

Daphne is a remarkably authentic character study of a quick-witted young woman teetering on the edge of a downward spiral. A sous-chef in a busy London restaurant, Daphne fills her spare hours with alcohol and hook-ups, resisting real human connection. When she witnesses a violent attack it strikes a nerve, forcing her to re-evaluate her life. Emily Beecham gives a stunning breakout performance as the perpetually unlikeable but mysteriously compelling Daphne in this complex and intimate portrait.

IN BETWEEN FRI 6 – MON 9 OCT

DIR: MAYSALOUN HAMOUD • 2016 ISRAEL/FRANCE • 1 HR 43 MINS SUBTITLED

Maysaloun Hamoud’s elegant and sensitive story of three Palestinian women trying to find their way in Tel Aviv is a beautifully acted film on the pressures of living in a patriarchal society. Laila and Salma work hard and play hard, filling their free time with dancing, drinking and DJing, but feel their style is cramped when quiet, studious Nour comes to stay with them. Each of them is looking for love but, as young Palestinian women, finding a relationship on their own terms is difficult. However, it’s this common ground that brings them together in this debut tour-de-force.

Mistaken for another man, suave Madison Avenue advertising executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) suddenly finds himself embroiled in a foreign espionage plot. Often seen as a precursor to James Bond with its thrilling plot twists and witty dialogue, North by Northwest remains an exhilarating spectacle on the big screen. SERGEI M. EISENSTEIN: THE LANGUAGE OF CINEMA Born in 1898 in Riga, Latvia, Sergei Eisenstein became one of the most world-renowned filmmakers and film theorists of the 20th century bringing a revolutionary spirit to the art of film, in particular his ideas around montage. Coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution in October 1917, portrayed in Eisenstein’s film October (1928), this season of films pays tribute to one of cinema’s most influential figures, a leading architect of the language of cinema. All films in this season are presented in 35mm format.

Lenin famously declared that 'film was the most important art' for the Bolsheviks, but died before the new Soviet cinema got started. As the tenth anniversary of the October revolution approached, there was competition and controversy over how it should be marked on screen. A stunning achievement in cinema, October is powerful, personal and controversial – initially banned, with its first British screenings only taking place in 1935.

Regularly cited on ‘Greatest Films’ lists, the two parts of Eisenstein's Ivan the Terrible are epic in scope and awesome in visuals. The first film, released in 1945, was much admired by Stalin, for whom Ivan was a personal hero. Part II however was suppressed by the censors and a third planned film was unfinished at the time of Eisenstein’s death in 1948. Tickets £10 (£8 concessions and Film Card holders).

Borley Rectory is an animated documentary chronicling what came to be known as 'The most haunted house in England'. When journalist V C Wall calls upon the services of famed paranormal investigator Harry Price to investigate supernatural 'goings on' at a Victorian mansion in Essex, little does he realise that he will set into motion a story that will fascinate and confound the world. Borley Rectory is the true story of Price's investigation and the legends that came to haunt all those involved. Starring Reece Shearsmith and Annabel Bates.

In hard times, a miller sells his daughter to the devil. Protected by her purity, she escapes but is deprived of her hands. Walking away from her family, she encounters the goddess of water, a gentle gardener and a prince in his castle. So begins a long journey towards the light! The Girl Without Hands is the audacious feature debut animation from acclaimed short filmmaker Sébastien Laudenbach, whose beautiful and dreamlike take on the Brothers Grimm story has created a unique fairy tale destined to become a classic.

CANALETTO AND THE ART OF VENICE SAT 30 SEPT – SUN 1 OCT

DIR. DAVID BICKERSTAFF • UK 2017 • 1 HR 27 MINS

From one of the world’s largest art collections comes the remarkable story of Canaletto and the city he shared with millions through his art. With exclusive access to the highly anticipated exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery, the film opens the doors of London’s Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle and takes cinema audiences through the squares and canals of Venice that Canaletto immortalised through his art. Including expert commentary and insights from curators of the Royal Collection, the film also reveals the intriguing story of how his works came to hold pride of place in the Queen’s own Picture Gallery.

TICKETS £10 (£8 concessions and Film Card holders)

DOCUMENTARY

HILLSBOROUGH THURS 19 OCT, 6.00PM

DIR: DANIEL GORDON • UK • 2016 2 HRS 1 MINS

CERT TBC

96 men, women and children died as a consequence of a foreseeable fatal crush on the terraces of the Hillsborough football stadium on 15 April 1989. What followed was one of the longest and most painful fights for justice in British legal history. Daniel Gordon’s BAFTA-winning film meticulously and powerfully presents the true story of how families and campaigners fought for the final vindication of those who had suffered on that day.

Followed by a Q&A with Professor Phil Scraton, factual consultant for the film and primary author of the Hillsborough Independent Panel's 2012 Report.
