45 years FRI 28 AUG – THURS 10 SEPT
DIR: ANDREW HAIGH • uk • 2015 • 1 HR 35 MINS
One of the best British films of the year, Andrew Haigh’s subtly devastating film is about the fractured relationship between a couple – delightfully played by Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay – as they head towards their 45th wedding anniversary party. A powerful and enthralling follow-up to Haigh’s critically acclaimed 2011 film Weekend, the film dwells on how an apparently happy union can be tormented by an echo from the past, with a decades-long bond threatened by insecurities and irrational jealousy.
The 6.30pm screening on Wed 9 Sept will be an Access screening with audio description and on-screen captioning.

DIR: BRIAN HELGELAND CERT • uk/france • 2015 • 2 HRs 11 MINS TBC
From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland comes the true story of the rise and fall of London’s most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ronnie Kray, both portrayed by Tom Hardy in an amazing double performance. Legend is a classic crime thriller taking us into the secret history of the 1960s and the extraordinary events that secured the infamy of the Kray Twins. The ensemble cast includes Emily Browning, Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Eccleston and Colin Morgan.
ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL FRI 4 – THURS 17 SEPT & SUN 27 SEPT
DIR: ALFONSO GOMEZ-REJON • USA • 2015 • 1 HR 45 MINS
Have you heard the one about the teenage guy who befriends a dying girl and has his life changed forever? Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann) has—and he’s not falling for it. The toast of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s take on boymeets-sick-girl romance totally upends the subgenre while potently delivering the goods. “The Citizen Kane of teen cancer tearjerkers … like The Fault in Our Stars remade for Criterion Collection fetishists.” – TIME OUT NEW YORK
The 6.30pm screening on Wed 16 Sept will be an Access screening with audio description and on-screen captioning. See page 23 for details of our parent and baby screening on Sun 27 Sept.

mistress america FRI 28 AUG – THURS 3 SEPT
DIR: NOAH BAUMBACH • uSA • 2015 • 1 HR 24 MINS
After the broader comedy of While We’re Young, Noah Baumbach returns to the indie stylings of Frances Ha with this wonderful comedy drama starring regular collaborator Greta Gerwig. Tracy (Lola Kirke), a lonely college freshman in New York, is rescued from her solitude by her soon-tobe stepsister, Brooke (Gerwig), an adventurous gal about town who entangles her in alluringly mad schemes. Mistress America is a comedy about dream-chasing, score-settling, makeshift families, and cat-stealing.
IRRATIONAL MAN FRI 25 SEPT – THURS 1 OCT
DIR: WOODY ALLEN • USA • 2015 • 1 HR 35 MINS
In Woody Allen’s latest, Joaquin Phoenix plays a philosophy professor who takes steps to shake off his inertia, and Emma Stone is his beguiled student caught in the fallout. Woody Allen is in fine vintage form in Irrational Man, a slinky, jazz-infused existential teaser in which various themes from some of the veteran filmmaker’s most memorable work dovetail into a darkly humorous quasi-thriller explored with a deft lightness of touch.

PASOLINI FRI 11 – WED 16 SEPT
DIR: ABEL FERRARA • FRANCE/ BELGIUM/ITALY • 2014 • 1 HR 24 MINS • PARTIALLY SUBTITLED
Rome, 1975. The outspoken filmmaker, writer and Marxist, Pier Paolo Pasolini is found dead on a beach on the outskirts of Rome, igniting a series of theories and conspiracies that continue to this day. Director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, Welcome to New York) charts the last day in Pasolini’s extraordinary life, creating a cool and engaging portrait of a man both devoted to his mother and the thrill of danger. With November 2015 marking the 40th anniversary of his death, Pasolini is an elegant, timely study of a visionary man (with a brilliantly cast Willem Dafoe as the artist). “Subtle and seductive” – Robbie Collin, Telegraph
IL VANGELO SECONDO MATTEO
THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW SUN 13 SEPT, 2.45PM DIR: PIER PAOLO PASOLINI • ITALY/FRANCE • 1964 • 2 HRS 17 MINS • SUBTITLED
To coincide with the release of Abel Ferrara’s Pasolini, QFT is screening Pier Paolo Pasolini’s rich re-telling of the story of Jesus Christ.
Non-believer Pasolini set out to film Matthew’s gospel exactly as written. The Vatican loved it and gave it a prize, Italian leftists accused Pasolini of selling out to the church, and audiences everywhere found it a truly extraordinary experience.

DIR: ANNA MUYLAERT • brazil • 2015 • 1 HR 52 MINS • subtitled
CERT TBC
Brazilian actresses Regina Casé and Camila Márdila shared a Special Jury Prize at Sundance for their performances as a good-hearted housemaid at odds with her progressive teenage daughter in this keenly observed family drama. When Val’s estranged daughter suddenly appears, the unspoken class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. “The glorious story of one woman’s emancipation…a hilarious and quietly devastating parable of modern Brazil.” - BERLINALE REVIEW
mia madre FRI 25 SEPT – THURS 1 OCT
DIR: NANNI MORETTI • ITALY/FRANCE • 2015 • 1 HR 47 MINS • subtitled
An intensely personal project from the veteran Italian actor/ director Nanni Moretti, Mia Madre is warm, witty and often deeply moving. Following familiar themes of cinema and family, he explores the devastating impact the death of a beloved parent can have, through the eyes of his alterego, film director Margherita (Margherita Buy). If this all sounds very sad, well, yes it is, but Moretti deftly lightens his film with a comedic tour-de-force from John Turturro playing a caricature of himself.
