Buy online at www.queensfilmtheatre.com FRI 9 OCT, FROM 2PM To mark the passing of Sam Rohdie earlier this year, the School of Creative Arts at Queen’s University Belfast and QFT have organised a screening and seminar dedicated to the work of JeanLuc Godard. In 1999, Sam was appointed as the inaugural Professor of Film Studies, and throughout his tenure at Queen’s the subject first developed its current undergraduate and postgraduate pathways, and initiated a number of important external collaborations. A compelling, controversial teacher and critic, Sam’s work increasingly concentrated on the cinema of Godard during and after his time at Queen’s. This event is an acknowledgement of Sam’s passionate engagement with arguably the most important figure in postwar European cinema. The event will include a screening of Une femme est une femme (A Woman is a Woman, 1961), introduced by Professor Geoffrey NowellSmith (Queen Mary), and an illustrated talk on Godard’s more recent work – especially, his Histoire(s) du cinéma - given by Professor Rod Stoneman (NUI, Galway). MACBETH FRI 2 – THURS 15 OCT

DIR: JUSTIN KURZEL • UK/FRANCE/USA • 2015 • 1 HR 53 MINS

Shakespeare’s Scottish play receives a powerful and visually arresting cinematic adaptation as Michael Fassbender steps into the shoes of one of theatre’s most conflicted characters. Aided by the fiercely ambitious Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard) the pair concoct a plan, fulfilling a witches prophecy to overthrow King Duncan and take the throne of war-torn Scotland for themselves. Featuring red-hued smoky battle scenes and an excellent Fassbender descending into madness as the eponymous anti-hero, this savagely realised, blood-soaked interpretation retains Shakespeare’s words in its story of power, ambition and guilt. “Kurzel’s chilling debut feature, the 2011 true-crime thriller Snowtown, suggested the then-37-year-old Australian filmmaker was a talent to watch. But this towering, consistently ingenious film establishes him as a director to cherish.” – ROBBIE COLLIN, DAILY TELEGRAPH ACCESS SCREENING The 6.20pm screening on Tues 13 Oct will include audio description and on-screen captioning. QFT LEARNING SCREENING QFT Learning arranges special daytime film screenings for schools with supporting talks and workshops. Macbeth will screen for schools on Tues 6 Oct, 10.30am-12.40pm. DIR: SHAUN PETTIGREW • UK/NEW ZEALAND • 2013 • 2 HRS 30 MINS • AGE: 18+

Formed during a fire ritual that burned down their flat, Killing Joke exploded onto the British post-punk music scene in 1978. They rapidly built a mythical status from their esoteric beliefs, controversial imagery and genre-defining experimentation; and inspired the likes of Nirvana, Metallica and Nine Inch Nails. Through a barrage of music, archive footage and deeply personal interviews shot over the last 12 years, this film provides the definitive story of Killing Joke – from rituals at Stonehenge to recording sessions in the Pyramids.

A brother and sister’s rite-of-passage road trip across the parched Mexican landscape. Social divisions, unrest and violence are evidenced in the world around them in a multi-layered, naturalistic tale of the bonds of family and the intricacies of Mexican society.

When Flavia and her wealthy family move to a new city, she meets odd schoolgirl, Verónica – who confesses to Flavia that she is a witch. This final feature film from award-winning Mexican horror master Carlos Enrique Taboada is an unusual gothic tale of witchcraft, told from a child’s point of view.

One of the first Mexican films to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Dolores del Rio stars as a young indigenous woman who faces intolerance from her own people for being the daughter of a prostitute. A magnificent melodrama set against the backdrop of pre-revolution Mexico, it is one of the country’s most beloved films.

A torrid love affair between a married man and a divorced mother forever changes their lives. This is elegant, powerful cinema, offering a bleak and brutally honest portrayal of the complexities of human relationships, and the often destructive power of sexual attraction. Contains explicit content.
