A Guide to
TIME travel MOVIES The rule is you should never meddle with the past. And we can see the sense in that. What if you went back to 1780? What if you bumped into John Jameson? What if you accidentally changed his mind about going into the whiskey business? It just doesn’t bear thinking about.

Iconic and oft-imitated, The Evil Dead staggered ahead with a very early lead in our latest ghoulish Jameson Presents vote. It beat horror classics such as The Exorcist and The Haunting to become the theme for Jameson Presents…Halloween! Banned in the UK when first released in 1981, this auspicious feature debut from Sam Raimi was shot on 16mm in the woods
of Tennesse for around $350,000 and secured the young director’s cult status. The nominal plot involves five vacationing college kids who accidentally release evil by playing a taped translation of the Necronomicon in an abandoned mountain cabin surrounded by impenetrable woods. One by one they turn into zombies - the evil dead.
paranoid atmosphere and a raft of sudden, effective shocks.
Despite the shoestring production values it was a phenomenon becoming one of the biggest “video nasties” of the time. Raimi unleashed his free-range camera, and eerie, omnipresent sound effects to create a bleak,

Sunshine On Leith is the heart-warming, vibrant cinematic adaptation of the acclaimed stage musical, inspired by the chart-topping album from Scottish band The Proclaimers.
Director Roger Michell’s portrait of an ailing marriage featuring the considerable talents of Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan as the disenchanted couple Nick and Meg.
Cate Blanchett stars in Woody Allen’s acclaimed drama about a newly penniless socialite attempting to rebuild her life.
The film follows the stories of Davy and Ally, who have to re-learn how to live life in Edinburgh after coming home from serving in Afghanistan. Both struggle to learn to live a life outside the army and to deal with the everyday struggles of family, jobs and relationships. The second feature from actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill) stars Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur) and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) in a tale of one tight-knit family, and the three couples bound to it, as they experience the joys and heartache that punctuate all relationships.
Le Week-End follows them on a trip to Paris as they try to jumpstart their marriage in that most romantic of cities. Running into a former college friend, played by Jeff Goldblum, Nick and Meg are invited to a party in his swanky new pad with his young, pregnant, second wife, further fuelling Nick’s discontent and setting the scene for more marital disharmony… With an acutely observed script by Hanif Kureishi and, unsurprisingly, superb performances from its two leads, Le Week-End is an immensely satisfying drama that packs a powerful emotional punch. The 2pm screening on Sun 20 Oct will include audio description and subtitles for the hard of hearing.
Sophisticated, elegant New Yorker Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) used to have it all. But then it turned out that her businessman husband Hal (Alec Baldwin) was a swindler. So now Jasmine is broke and on her own with a head full of anti-depressants. She heads for San Francisco and the modest apartment where her non-biological sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) lives. But the neurotic, hard-drinking interloper struggles to adjust to her lowly station in life. Woody Allen is back on home turf in more ways than one with this delicious and often very funny character study, with Cate Blanchett on top regal form as the brittle and myopic Jasmine.

She was encouraged by her new lover, leading heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan, and their passionate but necessarily clandestine romance provides the film’s central theme. Played by Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Naveen Andrews (Lost), the two protagonists reflect the constraints imposed on them by media fixation, but also their deep bond, which informed Stephen Jeffreys’ meticulously researched screenplay. Much garlanded director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, Five Minutes of Heaven) completes the picture with his wonderfully acute eye for character-led drama.

James McAvoy plays a corrupt, abusive, junkie cop in this outrageous yarn from the author of Trainspotting. Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson (McAvoy) is not the sort of policeman you’d stop to ask for directions. This psychopathic and corrupt Edinburgh cop is in line for promotion and he’s determined not to allow anything to get in his way. He’s supposed to be investigating a brutal, racially charged murder but he seems more interested in thwarting the ambitions of colleagues, such as Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell). That’s when he’s not drinking to excess, hoovering drugs and abusing women. Now, however, his past is threatening to catch up with him. James McAvoy gives a mesmerising performance as Irvine Welsh’s monstrous anti-hero.
Actor of the moment, Benedict Cumberbatch, plays one of international politics most controversial figures, Julian Assange, in Bill Condon’s Wikileaks thriller. Based on a book about the Wikileaks affair, as well as personal accounts from activist and associate of Assange, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, The Fifth Estate has the ring of authenticity bolstered by a spellbinding performance from Cumberbatch. Following Assange from his first recruitment of Domscheit-Berg, through his early online celebrity, and on to his subsequent notoriety, this is a compelling and thought provoking interpretation of this intriguing news story. Introduction by Marcus Smith, Associate Tutor, The Open University, on Sun 27 Oct, 8.50pm.
Kelly (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) and Victor (Julian Morris) meet when they are both high on the dance floor of a Liverpool nightclub and are soon in her bed, making love with an urgent intensity that surprises both of them. Their joy at finding each other soon becomes tinged with darker urges… Based on the acclaimed novel by Niall Griffiths and with a strong sense of location, Kelly + Victor is a candid, beautifully rendered depiction of a young couple embarking on a passionate and transgressive love affair.
Obsessed by his wife’s infidelity, Gerry (Aidan Gillen) finds himself in the alien surroundings of Singapore, as he deals with the aftermath of his brother John’s recent death. Increasingly intrigued by the circumstances of his brother’s life, and his bar Mister John’s, Gerry begins to find life in Singapore a lot more appealing than that back home, especially his growing intimacy with Kim, his brother’s widow. Jointly directed by the hugely talented Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor (Helen), Mister John is a distinctive piece of work, in turns engaging, contemplative and mysterious.

“ I have no desire to be a war firefighter flying from warzone to warzone. I don’t even care about photography. I’m interested in reaching people with ideas and engaging them with views of the world.” Tim Hetherington
A National Poetry Day event that you won’t want to miss!
It’s perhaps the most interesting and unflinching examination yet of the process of modern warfare - and an exhilarating, heartrending, profoundly moving film in its own right, made even more so by Hetherington’s subsequent death while filming in Libya.
Acclaimed photojournalist Tim Hetherington died from a shrapnel injury inflicted during the 2011 Libyan civil war. His most widely known film is the documentary Restrepo, but a distinctive sensibility informs all his work, with a focus not on sensationalist bloody conflict, but on ordinary people in desperate circumstances. In this moving documentary, including many personal recollections of those who knew and worked with him, his collaborator Sebastian Junger pays heartfelt tribute to Hetherington’s bravery, passion and vision.

Considered by many to be the definitive portrayal of the war in Afghanistan, it is fairly extraordinary that this film exists. The level of access attained by Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger over their 15-month period embedded with the Second Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade allows for an incredibly unvarnished account - including footage of deaths both civilian and military.

Narrated by Mark Ruffalo, this provocative documentary on the impact of shale gas extraction (fracking) in the US poses some challenging questions. The film investigates the potential negative impacts from shale gas industrial development and how those impacts have been handled by the US state, specifically the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Narrated with help from actor and advocate Mark Ruffalo, the film raises concerns about possible endangerment of public and environmental health due to shale gas extraction. Through personal stories, expert interviews, and investigation of case files, Triple Divide tells a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of the processes that are meant to regulate industry and protect the public and environment.

New 40th anniversary restoration approved by Director Robin Hardy. When a young girl mysteriously disappears on a remote Scottish island, devout Christian Police Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) travels there to investigate… Brilliantly scripted by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth, Frenzy) and featuring a career-best performance by the legendary Christopher Lee, director Robin Hardy’s atmospheric use of location, unsettling imagery and haunting soundtrack gradually builds to one of the most terrifying and iconic climaxes in modern cinema. This “Final Cut” of The Wicker Man, based on Robin Hardy’s 1979 cut for the US release, follows a worldwide search for the missing, longer, original cut. This version, he says, “fulfills my vision of what it was intended to convey to the audience.”
An iconic example of German expressionist cinema, and one of the most famous of all silent movies, F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror can still haunt and terrify audiences with the unshakeable power of its images. The first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, this now familiar story sees the monstrous vampire (here called Count Orlok) portrayed by the legendary Max Schreck, all teeth, talons and long shadows. The original horror film, Nosferatu has the uncanny quality of a waking nightmare and still has the power to unsettle despite being almost 100 years old. Introduction by Robert J.E. Simpson, writer and film historian, on Tues 29 Oct, 6.30pm.
The official film record of the legendary Everest expedition of 1924 is one of the most remarkable films in the BFI National Archive. Its release coincides with the 60th anniversary of the final conquest of Everest in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. This legendary expedition culminated in the deaths of two of the finest climbers of their generation, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, and sparked an on-going debate over whether or not they did indeed reach the summit. Filming in brutally harsh conditions with a specially adapted camera, Captain John Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historical significance.

With its rogues’ gallery of sexy femmes fatales, wisecracking private eyes and crooked cops, noir is one of cinema’s most distinctive and enduringly popular genres.
A classic film noir complete with snappy dialogue, Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity features a scammed insurance stooge, devious plans, and a man-eating double-crossing femme fatale.
Heavily influenced by the wave of émigré directors who flooded from Europe to Hollywood pre-WWII as well as the pulp fiction writing of the era, noir’s stylised cinematography, snappy dialogue and intricate plots combined to create a compelling cinematic world where women were dangerous, men were duplicitous and no-one could be trusted.
Chosen by Michael Connor, Curator of the exhibition Double Indemnity.
Chosen by leading critics, programmers and curators, this selection of films encompasses the classic 1940s Hollywood noir of Double Indemnity and Gilda and the emergence of neo-noir in the 1990s, taking in Japan (Stray Dog) and Norway (Insomnia) en route.

Reinventing the femme fatale for the ‘90s (and jump starting a million male fantasies in the process), Linda Fiorentino positively smoulders as bad-to-the-bone Bridget, whose motivation is simple but ruthless; she wants money, lots of it, and doesn’t care what she has to do (or who she has to hurt) to get it. A poet, filmmaker and artist of unique and extraordinary vision, Margaret Tait died in 1999, aged eighty. Inspired by her, Glasgow Film Festival established the Margaret Tait Award and Residency to support experimental and innovative artists working within film and moving image. In 2012 they sent emerging moving image artist, Sarah Forrest, to Margaret’s native Orkney for six weeks on a Creative Futures Residency. Here we present the resulting work alongside films by Award winners Anne-Marie Copestake and Stephen Sutcliffe, and three of Margaret’s own films. Artist and writer Daniel Jewesbury will introduce the screening and host a Q&A with Sarah Forrest. Thanks to Glasgow Film Festival, Creative Scotland and Lux.

BOLSHOI LIVE
2013-14 SEASON OVERVIEW Last season was one of the most eventful ever in the famous company’s long history, with the reopening of the magnificently restored Bolshoi Theatre, and the near-fatal attack on the company’s artistic director which forced the cancellation of their planned new production of the Rite of Spring. In the best showbusiness tradition, through all the drama and controversy, the company forged ahead with plans for the new season, and has assembled another glittering array of great ballets for its global audience. The Bolshoi’s famous production of Spartacus heads the bill, to the much loved music of Khatachurian. Tchaikowsky’s timeless fairy-tale classic Sleeping Beauty is the Christmas ballet this season. The great comic-satiric ‘Jazz Age’ ballet by Shostakovitch, The Golden Age is another highlight, along with the romantic swashbuckling pirate adventure Le Corsaire. The glitteringly beautiful Jewels, provides a sparkling interlude in the season, and there is all the excitement of a completely new Bolshoi production - the 2011 ballet Lost Illusions: a story of student ambition, love and loss in 19th century Paris. Steeped in the greatest tradition in world ballet, the greatest dancers from the Bolshoi feature as soloists, with the incomparable Bolshoi Corps de Ballet, and music played by the great Orchestra of the Bolshoi State Theatre.
