DAVE MCDOWELL

With an OUA Championship and 5th place finish at the National final in hand the 2016 Gaels had high expectations for their season.

Dave McDowell is entering his 29th season as head coach of the Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team. A two-time U Sports Coach of the Year and the 2012 winner of the OUA Fox40 Coach of the Year award, McDowell has guided the Gaels to three national championships, in 1988, 2010 and 2011, as well as five provincial crowns, in ‘88, ‘01, ‘02, ‘11 and ‘15. Under his guidance, Queen’s has posted a combined record of 311-90-82, including OUA and U Sports playoffs, for an impressive 0.729 winning percentage. During his tenure, the Gaels have posted 10 or more wins in the regular season seven times, this mark also includes a team record 14 during the 2010 season. McDowell, a member of the Queen’s men’s soccer team from 1983-87, has been recognized as the OUA Coach of the Year seven times during his career at Queen’s, winning 21 provincial medals (5 gold, 10 silver, 6 bronze) and six national medals (3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). A Level 4 NCCP certified coach, the Northern Ireland native lives in Kingston with his wife Laura and their two children, Owen and Dannan. Career Record Reg. With their new home, the revitalized Richardson Stadium, opening up the Gaels started off the season with a pair of home games at Miklas-McCarney Field defeating both Nipissing and Laurentian. Next Queen’s was on the road where they dropped two of three to UOIT and Ottawa while defeating Trent. After five games the Gaels were off to a 3-2-0 record. From that point on Queen’s, like in 2015, took off. A four game home stretch, that included their first game at Richardson, saw them improve to 6-2-1 with wins over Carleton, Ryerson and Toronto and a draw against Ottawa. The tricolour finished 5-2 the rest of the way to clinch the second spot in the OUA East. The Gaels also were strong in their new home finishing with a sparkling 3-0-1 record at Richardson Stadium while outscoring opponents 15-1 over the four games. After receiving a bye from the opening round of playoffs Queen’s saw their success at Richardson continue. The Gaels drew the Ottawa GeeGees and after the full 90 minutes no goals had been scored and extra time was needed. In the 109th minute captain Laura Callender put the Gaels ahead for good as they hung on from there for a 1-0 win, sending them back to the OUA Final Four. At the Final Four, the Gaels drew the top seeded West team and host Western Mustangs. Matijia Skoko brought her A-Game as she potted a pair of tallies for the tricolour en route to a 2-0 victory and date with UOIT in the Championship. In the championship game the two East teams played a tight match but a lone goal from UOIT was enough to defeat the Gaels who claimed the OUA Silver medal and along with it a spot at the U Sports National Championship for the second straight year. Queen’s enters the championship as the No.5 seed and will begin their quest for their first national title since 2011 when they meet the AUS champion and No.4 seed St. FX X-Women on Thursday.

Gaels chase for fourth Gladys Bean Trophy begins Thursday as No.5 seed TORONTO (U Sports) – The schedule and quarter-final matchups were announced Monday for the 30th U Sports women’s soccer championship, which kicks off Thursday in Wolfville, N.S. The eight-team tournament, hosted by Acadia University for the first time since 2000 and the third time overall, concludes next Sunday at Raymond Field with the gold-medal final set for 4:30 p.m. Atlantic Time. All 11 games from the competition will be webcast live on Bell Alliant Fibe TV 1. The UBC Thunderbirds, who last year triumphed on home turf in Vancouver, have received the top seed for the national tourney after repeating as Canada West conference champions. KINGSTON, Ont. (October 30, 2016) – The Gaels defeated the No.9 Ottawa Gee-Gees 1-0 in a hard fought game that required extra time.

LONDON, Ont. (November 4, 2016) – The No.7 Gaels blanked the host Western Mustangs 2-0 on a pair of goals from Matija Skoko (Toronto) in the OUA Semi-Final to earn a spot in the Championship game at 2pm on Sunday. The win also books Queen’s a place at the U Sports National Championship next weekend, hosted by Acadia.

Laura Callender (Ottawa) received the ball with her back to goal about 10 yards out, made a great turn to shake a pair of defenders, and made no mistake to find the back of the net in the 109th minute. GAME FLOW The Gaels began the first half with a fast paced start, but struggled to keep possession of the ball in the offensive third. Queen’s held their own against the aggressive Gee-Gees offence, keeping the score at 0-0. The strong tricolour defence kept Ottawa from getting too many chances on net. Lauren Winquist (London, Ont.) entered the game for Jenny Wolever (Toronto, Ont.) and had the best opportunity of the game so far, sprinting up the wing before challenging the goalie at the edge of the six yard box, but was unable to score. The first half ended with a stressful ordeal in front of the Gaels net. The Gee-Gees got the ball past Queen’s keeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.), but Erin Cliffe (Burlington, Ont.) got back to clear it off the line. The score remained 0-0 at the break with one save for each keeper. The Gaels had more shots during the second half and stepped up their game by playing more offensively. Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) sent a corner toward goal, which resulted with a scoring opportunity for Matija Skoko (Toronto, Ont.), but her shot sailed just high of the net. Callender took a beautiful shot from 30 yards out, which was headed for the top left corner of the Gee-Gees net, but Ottawa’s keeper Margot Shore tipped the ball onto the crossbar, and it ricocheted into touch. The score remained 0-0 at the end of the second half and sent the game into extra time. Queen’s maintained their composure throughout the intense first period of extra time. Both teams had shots on goal, but the keepers stood tall and the game remained scoreless heading into the final 15 minutes. It was in the second half of extra time that Callender put the Gaels ahead. After receiving a ball from Skoko to the left of goal, the Queen’s midfielder beat her defenders and dribbled across the face of goal before depositing the ball into the bottom right corner past the outstretched Ottawa keeper. The tricolour held on through the remaining minutes to advance to the OUA Final Four with a 1-0 win.

GAME FLOW The Gaels began the game with heightened intensity, as play went back and forth early. The Gaels gained momentum after Jenny Wolever (Toronto), Tara Bartam (Vancouver) and Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) fired shots on target, but were stopped by the Mustangs goalie Megan Girardi. Queen’s defence stood strong against the Mustangs offence, holding them to just two shots in the first half, but none on net. The first half ended with a stressful attack on the Gaels net, when Amanda Boyle had one of the best opportunities of the game for Western, but her shot hit the crossbar and went over to leave the halftime score 0-0. The Gaels started the second half with strong defence as the Mustangs pushed attacks towards goal. The tricolour maintained a tight midfield throughout the game to limit Western’s ability to move the ball. In the 59th minute of the game, Wolever sent a shot on net from the wide left corner. Mustangs keeper Girardi saved the first shot, but the rebound fell to Skoko, who poked the ball into the net to put Queen’s ahead 1-0. Soon after, the Mustangs had an opportunity just outside the Gaels 18 yard box, but the tricolour cleared the ball from their end to defend their lead. In the 86th minute, good defence from Skoko put her in a footrace with Western’s keeper for the ball. The Gaels midfielder won the race and made no mistake, placing the ball into the open net for a 2-0 lead. The Gaels maintained the lead until the end, winning the game and earning the right to defend their OUA title. Madison Tyrell (White Rock) stood tall when she needed to, earning her fifth consecutive clean sheet dating back to the regular season. Gaels head to nationals with OUA Silver LONDON Ont. (November 6, 2016) – The Gaels suffered a 1-0 loss to the UOIT Ridgebacks in the OUA Championship game, and will head to Acadia for the National Championships as the OUA Finalists. With the result, UOIT thwarted the Gaels hopes of repeating as provincial champions and captured the first OUA Championship in the history of their women’s soccer program. GAME FLOW To start the first half, Queen’s struggled to keep possession of the ball against the relentless pressure applied by the Ridgebacks. The tricolour were forced to make a sub in the opening minutes when Rachel Radu (Ottawa) took a knee and was replaced by Savannah Meyer-Clement (Oshawa, Ont.). After 15 mintues, the Gaels found their footing and began to have some success advancing the ball. Just when Queen’s was starting to look dangerous in the offensive third, a costly give away got turned into a breakaway opportunity for UOIT’s Taijah Henderson. The Ridgeback attacker beat out the Gaels defenders in a race toward goal, making a move at the top of the box before putting her team ahead with a low shot that beat Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.). Lauren Winquist (London, Ont.) and Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) checked into the game soon after, and the tricolour picked up the intensity as the half progressed. The two subs made an instant impact, with Windquist causing a turnover at the top of the 18 before passing across to Nixon, whose shot was saved by UOIT’s Helen Frampton. Jenny Wolever (Toronto) was marked closely for much of the first half, but got away from her defenders late in the half when she cut in from the wing, firing a shot that missed high. Queen’s came out of halftime playing their best soccer of the match. The Gaels built on their momentum from late in the first half and played balls down the wings to get into Ridgebacks territory. Even though the Gaels were finding a little more time on the ball, UOIT continued to keep the tricolour off the scoreboard with solid defence in their own end. Laura Callender (Ottawa) found some space in the middle of the field and fired a shot goalward, but Frampton was there to tip it onto the crossbar and out for a Gaels corner. Wolever had another chance for Queen’s when she sped past her defenders, but her left-footed shot was saved on the turf. Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) created an opportunity for herself when she danced away from a UOIT wouldbe tackler and fired a rocket toward the top right corner. The ball beat a diving Frampton, but sailed harmlessly wide. In the final 10 minutes of the game, UOIT recovered the form they had early in the game, shutting down every Gaels chance before any threat of danger. When the final whistle sounded, UOIT was crowned the OUA Champion and the Gaels settled for silver. Tyrell finished the game with four saves, while Frampton was credited with two. Both teams will represent the OUA at the U Sports National Championship this week in Wolfville, N.S., hosted by Acadia.
