HEAD COACH DAVE WILSON Wilson is in his 35th season as head coach (36th with the program). Named OUA East coach of the year, Wilson guided the Gaels to a program best record of 18-1 to claim and OUA silver medal and also register career win 350. In the last 17 years, Wilson’s teams have competed for five OUA East Championships, won four OUA East Division Championships, one OUA Championship, and will be making their fourth U SPORTS Championship appearance. He prides his program on being one that provides student-athletes with the best of both worlds; first rate academics and first rate basketball. Noted for his commitment to his athletes both on and off the court, Wilson feels that it is essential for athletes to know that the entire coaching staff is willing and able to help with matters relating to basketball, school, and life in general. Wilson’s post-secondary education began at West Virginia University before transferring to Queen’s to complete a B.A., B.P.H.E., B.Ed. and an M.Ed. As an educator, he believes strongly in the value of a Queen’s education and the ability to combine schoolwork with the rigours of the varsity basketball program. He is extremely proud of the academic success of the players in the program, boasting a 100% graduation rate over his 36 years. Himself a former Gael, Wilson makes his home in Kingston with his wife, Laurie, and has a son, Tai. Career Record: Regular Season
SEASON REVIEW The Gaels finished 2016-17 with their best mark in franchise history losing just one conference game all year to close out the season at 18-1. The only blemish came at home after winning their first 16 games the Gaels lost 60-52 to the Carleton Ravens. Queen’s headed into the playoffs as the firstoverall seed earning a bye to the quarterfinal round. The tricolour drew the Lakehead Thunderwolves in their match who were fresh off an upset of Brock on the road. After struggling to start the game the Gaels took control in the second half taking a decisive 81-53 win at home and earning the right to host the OUA Critelli Cup final four for the first time in program history. With the four-seed Windsor Lancers making their 10th straight appearance at the Final Four the Gaels drew an experienced team in their semifinal. A back-and-forth game for much of the first three quarters, Queen’s was finally able to pull away in the end behind the hot hand of guard Emily Hazlett who led the Gaels in scoring. Queen’s met Carleton for a sold-out Critelli Cup final at the Queen’s Athletics and Recreation Centre in Kingston with 1,904 in attendance. The Gaels struggled to finish and hit their shots against a stingy defensive team in Carleton, resulting in a low scoring affair. The Gaels used the crowd to get themselves back into the game, but in the end the Ravens were too much, taking a Critelli Cup win 49-41. Heading into the U SPORTS national championship, the Gaels are seeded as the #3 team in Canada and will meet the AUS champion Cape Breton Capers. Queen’s will look to earn their first ever medal at the U SPORTS championship, with their best finish coming in 2001 when they finished in fourth place.

KINGSTON, Ont. (February 25, 2017) - The No.5 Queen’s Gaels took down the Lakehead Thunderwolves 81-53 in their OUA quarter-final from the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in OUA women’s basketball playoff action. With the win, Queen’s will now host the OUA Critelli Cup Final Four next weekend. GAME FLOW The Gaels got off to the quick start they were hoping for in the opening quarter led by an Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) lay-in untouched to kick things off in Kingston. From there, Queen’s
The Thunderwolves pushed back as the Gaels shooters went cold. To close out the quarter, Lily Gruber-Schulz was the benefactor of a Jerika Baldin pass to the baseline that Shculz snuck-in before the buzzer to tie the game up at 17-17 heading into the second. August Ricketts hit a jumper to start off the second and the Thunderwolves moved ahead for the first time in the game. Queen’s jumped in front again but were only able to stay ahead of Lakehead by just a few points. Heading into the final minutes before halftime, Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) and Veronika Lavergne (Ottawa) went to work to put Queen’s in good standing at the break. First, Alarie picked up a pass from Hazlett and drove to the hoop for an easy two. After Hazlett then connected with Lavergne in the post for another bucket, Alarie elected not to run out the clock with 18 seconds left as she spotted a wide-open Lavergne who finished an easy lay-in. When it was all said and done the Gaels went to halftime up 36-26. In the third quarter the Gaels pushed the pace and were able to maintain a double-digit lead for much of the quarter. When Lakehead was able to get the game to within eight points, rookie Bridget Mulholland (Kingston, Ont.) went to work for Queen’s hitting a big three-pointer to put the Gaels back ahead 11. Queen’s outscored Lakehead 21-12 in the third to take a 19-point lead heading into the final quarter. From there it was all Gaels in the final frame. Queen’s added another nine points to their lead before it was all said and done. Alarie scored nine of her 19 points in the final frame and the Gaels took an 81-53 win over Lakehead. FINAL SAY “This is a huge opportunity and it was one of our goals at the very beginning of the season to host the Final Four. We plan to work even harder this week now to make sure we are ready. Coming into the second half tonight we just said we were going to take care of business. We were dominating on the boards offensively and defensively and we were getting steals. I think that just helped to lead our offence in the second half.” - Marianne Alarie.

KINGSTON, Ont. (March 3, 2017) - The first-seeded Queen’s Gaels took down the fourth-seeded Windsor Lancers 64-56 from the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. The Gaels saw a strong performance by fifth-year guard Emily Hazlett who led all scorers with 22 points on 10-16 shooting while adding six rebound and five assists. Windsor saw Emily Prevost go 7-14 for 17 points to lead all Lancers. Queen’s was able to take advantage of 28 Lancer turnovers for 24 points while the Gaels com-
“This is something we’ve been working toward all year,” said Emily Hazlett after the win. “Now that we have the chance to win the Critelli Cup tomorrow at home and then move on to try and win the bronze baby; everyone is just excited.” The game started off with a quick first bucket to the visiting Windsor Lancers who held and early lead thanks to some cold shooting from the home side Queen’s Gaels. Fifth-year Queen’s guard Emily Hazlett put the Gaels on her back from there, making quick moves for buckets with an around-the-back past the Lancer defence and a fake-pass she took straight to the hoop. The Gaels took a 17-13 lead after the opening frame. Emily Prevost and Carly Steer showed why the Lancers have been such a dominant team in the OUA in recent years putting the Lancers on their back to get back into the game. Prevost put up nine of her 11 first-half points in the second frame as the Lancers briefly pulled ahead. Hazlett continued to shoot well for Queen’s, however, finishing 6-7 in the opening half and it was all tied up at 32-32 at the break. Two of the better teams in the country went toe-to-toe through the third which saw the lead swinging back and forth. A seven-point effort from Andrea Priamo gave the Gaels a two-point lead heading into the final frame. Queen’s continued to push the pace into the fourth quarter as the Lancers bench started to get more minutes with starters finding themselves in foul trouble. The momentum shifted the Gaels way as the crowd erupted for a Marianne Alarie steal that turned into points for Queen’s. From there the Gaels defence stayed strong, and Queen’s was able to fend off the Lancers for a 64-56 victory. “I wasn’t concerned when we were tied at halftime because I knew that if we kept the pace up, they would be tired come the fourth quarter,” said Gaels coach Dave Wilson. “It was a hell of a performance from a fifth-year player (Hazlett) who knows how to control a game and allows me almost to just sit back.”

KINGSTON, Ont.- The Queen’s Gaels women’s basketball team battled hard, but came up short in the Critelli Cup OUA championship final on Saturday evening at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), falling to the Carleton Ravens by a score of 49-41 in front of a sell-out crowd of 1,904. After losing their first game of the season back in November, the Ravens ran the table throughout the rest of their conference and playoff schedule, winning 21 straight contests, the last of which came in a formidable defensive effort against a Gaels squad that also lost only once in the regular season. That defeat also came against the Ravens on February 10 at the ARC.
“It’s been a long time coming for this program,” said Carleton bench-boss Taffe Charles. “We work hard and I thought this team deserved it, we did a lot of great things this year and overcame a lot of adversity. We’re just pleased to win in an absolute hostile environment, defense can win championships and it doesn’t fail you especially when things are tight.” Carleton held the Gaels to a 19.7% (15-76) shooting percentage and just two three-point field-goals on the night, while managing just enough offense of their own against a stingy Queen’s squad that held them to a 27.1% (16-59) efficiency. OUA first-team all-star Heather Lindsay tallied a game-high 15 points and 16 rebounds in the victory, and was named the Porter Airlines player of the game in helping the Ravens raise the Critelli Cup Trophy for the first time in its history. “It was a big statement win for our program,” said Lindsay. “We go out there, we see a target and we just try and beat it. That was our goal on the year and we did it for our coach.” “I’ve known Heather since she was 14-years old and just to see her growth as a basketball player is amazing,” said Charles. “When the players want it more than the coach that’s what you want to have and she really led this team.” Fellow first-team all-star Catherine Traer added nine points and seven rebounds for the Ravens. The Gaels were led by first-team conference all-star Emily Hazlett, who picked up 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Marianne Alarie tallied 12 points and six rebounds, while Robyn Pearson – also a first-team all-star – added seven points and a game-high 18 rebounds. The Gaels’ sole title remains its OUA championship victory in 2000-01. “I felt we got good looks at the hoop a number of times, and even when we had those good looks we couldn’t make it,” said Queen’s coach Dave Wilson. “This one we’ll just have to forget and move on to the next one (at U SPORTS) and see who we draw. The atmosphere that we had (at the ARC), the signs, the noise, everything like that, it was just a fun place to play.”

Exhibition | Metro Gelebe tournament L 67-60 After a back-and-forth first half, the host Carleton Ravens got the better of the Gaels in a hard fought game, which ended 67-60. Queen’s was up 29-27 after the first half, winning the first quarter 17-15 before both teams scored 12 points in the second. Carleton jumped ahead in the third, outshooting Queen’s 46.7% to 33.3% in the quarter. Despite their best efforts, the Gaels saw a three-point deficit heading into the final frame grow, ending the game down 67-60 to the Ravens, who won their home tournament as a result. The Gaels were led by Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) with 11 points and six rebounds. Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) and Abby Dixon (North Vancouver) scored 10 points each for the tricolour. Dixon contributed a team-high seven rebounds, while Hazlett grabbed five of her own. Regular Season L 60-52 No. 3 Gaels unbeaten streak snapped in 60-52 loss to No. 5 Ravens KINGSTON, Ont. (February 10, 2017) - The Queen’s Gaels women’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in front of a boisterous crowd, dropping a 60-52 decision to the stingy Carleton Ravens. Emily Hazlett scored a game-high 16 points in a losing cause for the Gaels (16-1), who were held to 52 points – a season low – by the top defence in the conference from Carleton (15-1). Queen’s now joins the Ravens as the only two teams to have just a single loss to their name with two weekends left in conference play. Hazlett shot 5-of-9 from the field, while Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) added 11 points and four rebounds. Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) tallied eight points and a team-high eight boards for Queen’s, who shot 31.7% (19-60) on the night. Catherine Traer dropped 14 points in helping the Ravens hand Queen’s its first conference loss. OUA Final L 49-41 See above playoff recap.

Jane Gagne picked up nine points, three baords and three steals, and Gabrielle Girard added eight points, five boards, and three steals for Laval, who were able to claim 21 points off of 25 turnovers from the Gaels. Queen’s was led by a 10-points performance from Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.), who shot 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and tallied six rebounds and a steal. Veronika Lavergne added eight rebounds and six boards, and Marianne Alarie chipped in five points and eight rebounds for the Gaels, who finish the weekend with a 2-1 record. The Rouge-et-Or shot 36.6% from the field on Sunday afternoon, compared to 28.0% from Queen’s.

QUEEN’S GAELS - WOMEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA NOTES - 2016-17 17
CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS: 1935 1948 1952 1961 1970 2001
OVER 100 YEARS OF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AT QUEEN’S Queen’s Women’s Basketball celebrated 100 years in the fall of 2010 and are currently playing in their 103rd season. The December 1, 1910 issue of the Queen’s Journal reported on the first ever game for women’s basketball at Queen’s:
“Tuesday, the 22nd, was a notable day in the history of basketball in the University, for on that day, for the first time, the Ladies’ Basketball team played before the public view. A very large crowd turned out to see the game, including several hundred ladies. It quite beautified our old gym, when the rows of bright faces and bright colours were arranged around the side. The YMCA were our girls’ first victims. Mr. Bews has been boasting for some time about his team, but we thought he was simply indulging in pleasantry. However, our eyes were opened. The girls played beautiful ball. Short, fast passing, quick running, hard checking, and some really splendid shooting, marked the game.” Queen’s won its first game 11-5. The players were Miss Edna Henderson, Miss Merry, Miss Nash, Miss O’Hearn, and Miss Warren.
INTERCOLLEGIATE BASKETBALL LEAGUE - 1922 The women’s intercollegiate basketball league was started in 1922. Three teams were in the league, Queen’s, Varsity and McGill. Each year the teams competed for the “Bronze Baby”, the original trophy was lost in a shipwreck on its way from England.
BRONZE BABY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS Queen’s Bronze Baby Champions (Prior to National Championship donation in 1972) 1934-35, 1947-48, 1951-52, 1961-62, 1969-70 In 1934-35 Queen’s won the intercollegiate championship (The Bronze Baby) for the first time since its donation in 1922. (Queen’s Journal Vol.75: January 30, 1948, No.29)
OUA CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS In 2000-01 the team had their most successful season since the inception of the OWIAA (now OUA) in 1971. Despite a third place finish in the OUA East division, the Gaels knocked off Toronto in the quarter-finals, 89-72, Laurentian in the semifinals, 61-57, enroute to the provincial championship over McMaster 73-63. Co-captain Jacqueline Beaudoin led the way with 80 points for the Gels in the three games combined proving why she was selected as an OUA All-Star. 2000-01
