HEAD COACH
SEASON REVIEW
BETH BARZ
Coming into the 2015 season the Gaels turned over a good portion of their roster welcoming a large recruiting class with many standouts at both the provincial and national levels.
Beth is heading into her 14th season with the Gaels, her 11th as head coach. The 2013 season saw the Gaels win their first provincial banner and grab a CIS bronze medal, their highest ever placing. This year Barz and the Gaels host the 2015 CIS Championship. A Queen’s graduate and women’s rugby alumnus from the School of Physical Education, she has completed her NCCP Level Four Coaching credentials. Beth also completed the National Team Apprenticeship Program and is currently involved with the National Coaching Institute as a module facilitator and mentor coach. Beth has previously worked with teams from Canada U20, Canada U18, Ontario U17 15s and 7s and at the high school where she teaches in Sydenham. She was also recently certified as an IRB Educator and regularly instructs National Coaching Certification Programs in rugby and fundamental movement skills. In 2006, Beth was named CIS Coach of the Year and in 2013-14 named the OUA Fox40 Female Coach of the Year. The Gaels hosted Ottawa and Western in exhibition play splitting with a win over Western and a loss to Ottawa (#3 seed at Nationals), two teams who were featured in the CIS Top 10 during the season. With a new lineup set Queen`s hosted the McMaster Marauders (#2 seed at Nationals) to open the season at Nixon Field. The Gaels found themselves down early but climbed back thanks to a near 100-metre run from Emma Chown for a try. The Gaels got out in front and held on for a close 15-14 win over the defending OUA Champions. From there the Gaels won their next three games visiting Trent with a 54-0 shutout, dropping Toronto at home 106-3 and capturing a road win at York 41-7. In their final regular season game the Gaels traveled to Guelph ranked No.3 for a meeting with the No.2 Gryphons. Despite a strong start early Guelph proved too much for the Gaels defeating Queen’s 48-7. Queen’s finished in second place in the Russell division and drew a home playoff game against York. The Lions were no match for Queen’s as they took down York 53-15 after six Gaels put down tries in the match. Queen’s then crossed over to take on the top team in the Sheils division which was the then No.1 Gryphons. Guelph once again proved too much for Queen’s winning 38-3 and sending the Gaels to the bronze medal match. In the bronze game the Gaels hosted Western but could not close climb back from an early deficit falling 20-10 to the Mustangs to finish fourth.

Queen’s lost 20-10 to Western in the OUA bronze-medal game. In addition to StFX, Lethbridge is the only team in this week’s field to have hoisted the Monilex Trophy in the past. The Pronghorns won three consecutive CIS titles from 2007 to 2009. NOTES: Seeding for the CIS championship is based on conference results at the previous year’s tournament... REGULAR SEASON RECAPS
QUEEN’S MCMASTER

Sept. 13, 2015 Kingston, Ont. - Nixon Field
Gaels grab second half comeback win against defending OUA champion Marauders in season opener GAME FLOW McMaster had the kick-off giving Queen’s the first possession. The Marauders didn’t give the Gaels a chance to leave their half, pushing against their line with fly-half Steph Black breaking through and putting down the first try of the game which she completed with a conversion. Queen’s responded quickly, finding their way on offence, but the play remained evenly matched with the Marauders keeping them on their toes. The Gaels took it a couple meters at a time forcing the Marauders back and scoring a penalty conversion by veteran Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) who put the Gaels on the board for the first time in the game. The rest of the half was a stalemate from both teams with the score left at 7-3 for McMaster at halftime. The Marauders kept their momentum going into the second frame, with Selena Seguin pushing through their second try of the game completed with a conversion by Black putting them up 14-3 early on. The Gaels found themselves immediately back on defence deep in their half however, with her trademark agility, Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) found a seam in the Marauder’s offence breaking away for a near 100 meter run to put down the first try of the game for Queen’s. With another McEwen convert, the Gaels tightened the score up to 14-10. The Gaels battled hard to catch the Marauders and, taking advantage of uneven numbers, managed to get Hannah Van Luven (Inverary, Ont.) through with a try giving Queen’s their first lead of the game at 15-14. The Gaels maintained this lead for the final minutes of injury time grabbing their first win of their OUA 2015 season. FINAL SAY? “We started with a third of our starting lineup being rookies and they played out of their skin today. The opportunities are there for us to continue to get better and make sure we don’t get down early when we get scored on, we did a really nice job responding today.”Beth Barz, head coach BY THE NUMBERS 2nd – McMaster’s standing in the 2014 CIS Championships 4-1 – Gaels 2014 regular season record 2 – Members of the Gaels that were named CIS all-Canadians in 2014: McEwen and Gillian Pegg (Oro-Medonte, Ont.) 100 meters – Emma Chown’s second half run 2 – McEwen conversions

Erin Geddes (Lindsay, Ont.) got the conversion, her first of many on the day, to make it 7-0 Gaels. From there Queen’s started to open up a wide margin, first it was Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) with her first try of the day which was converted by Geddes, then Miranda Seifert (Regina) added a try and Queen’s was up 19-0 only nine minutes in. From there the Gaels added another Chown try and a penalty kick and conversion from Geddes and sat comfortably with a 29-0 lead at half. Hannah Greenwood (Kingston, Ont.), Katie Garland (Peterborough, Ont.), Leigha Stiles (Pembroke, Ont.) and Hannah Bradshaw (Napanee, Ont.) all scored trys in the second half en route to a 54-0 final. FINAL SAY? “Things went as we expected and we wanted to work in some players who hadn’t had a lot of playing time yet and let them show that they deserve to be picked for games in the future as well. We actually finished with 10 first-year players on the field so lot’s of new players were able to put on the jersey and get an opportunity to play.” - Beth Barz, head coach. GAME FLOW After being topped by the Gaels in last year’s OUA Quarter Final match the Lions were determined to make their mark against their main competitor in the Russel Division of the OUA getting a try down from Cheyenne Legerton and a matching conversion from Mariah Fontana early in the first half. The Gaels asserted their dominance quickly, however and scored themselves a lead of 24-7 against the Lions at halftime.
GAME FLOW The game started off with both teams digging in their heels defensively and much of the play took place near mid-field with neither team able to break through the strong defensive play. The Gryphons were the first to break through as the undefeated Shiels division leaders broke through the Gaels for a try and successful conversion. They went right at Queen’s once more and put up a 14-0 lead mid-way through the opening half.
The Gaels continued to lead in the second putting up 17 points in the half and shutting down any attempts from the Lions. The Gaels were led yet again by Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) who put down three tries in their win. Queen’s also had tries from Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, B.C.), Miranda Seifert (Regina), McKinley Hunt (King City, Ont.) and Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.), who also scored three conversion in their 41-7 victory over York.
The Gaels continued to challenge the Gryphons, a team who had yet to allow a try to an opponent all season, and Queen’s broke through. It was Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) who took a pass on the wing and hit the sidelines breaking through tackles and busting through tacklers finding paydirt as she put the ball down for a try. Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) stepped up and sent a successful kick through for a conversion cutting the Gryphon lead in half to 14-7.

The Gryphons secure themselves a first place finish in the Shiels division while Queen’s will fall to second place behind McMaster. FINAL SAY? “There is always a lesson in a loss that you can’t get any other way, so if we are going to learn that lesson today is a chance to do that.
