2010 WOMEN’S SOCCER
CHAMPIONSHIP Season Recap The 2010-11 edition of the Queen’s Gaels sees a hungry squad looking to improve upon its fourth place finish at the CIS championship a year ago. The Gaels finished the regular season atop the OUA with 42 points and a 14-2-0 record. The season was highlighted by a six game winning streak from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3 that saw the team outscore their opposition 21-4. Queen’s only two defeats came at the hands of the Ottawa Gee-Gees by slim 1-0 margins. Despite those two defeats, the team still managed to finish as the top-ranked team in the nation, reaching the milestone in the last week of the season. It was the first time the Gaels have been ranked No. 1 since 1998. In the playoffs, the Gaels dispensed of the Nipissing Lakers in a thrilling OUA Quarter-final matchup. After Kelli Chamberlain (North Bay, Ont.) gave the Gaels the lead, the Lakers forced overtime with a last minute goal. However, OUA scoring leader Jacqueline Tessier (Winnipeg, Man.) gave Queen’s the win by scoring just eight minutes into overtime to send the Gaels to the OUA Final Four. The team’s semifinal matchup against McMaster saw the Gaels put on a show for the hometown crowd as they posted a 3-0 victory over the Marauders, advancing them to the OUA Championship. In the final, the Laurier Golden Hawks would spoil the party for Queen’s as they pulled out a 1-0 win over the Gaels. The Gaels are led by CIS Most Valuable Player candidate Jacqueline Tessier, who led the nation with 18 goals during the regular season and added two during the post-season to bring her overall total to 20. Fellow Striker Kelli Chamberlain also put together a career year, finishing with 10 goals to finish second behind Tessier in the OUA. In the midfield, the Gaels are very deep, anchored by attacking winger Jennifer Hutchinson (St. John’s Nfld.), who had four goals for the team this year. In the middle, the Gaels boast an experienced duo of Angela Sullivan (Scarborough, Ont.) and Chantal McFetridge (Kelowna, B.C.). 2009-10 OUA East Rookie of the Year Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) patrols the opposite wing from Hutchinson. Queen’s back four, led by Brienna Shaw (Vancouver, B.C.) and 2009-10 CIS Tournament All-Star Mikyla Kay (West Vancouver, B.C.), were solid all season for Queen’s, helping the team surrender just 10 goals during the regular season. Joining Shaw and Kay in the back is rookie Melissa Jung (Mississauga, Ont.) and Victoria Gonzalez-Milroy (Vancouver, B.C.). In goal, the Gaels rely on Chantel Marson (London, Ont.) and Elena Corry (Hamilton, Ont.). Both players split the majority of games during the regular season and playoffs. They will be relied upon to provide leadership during the national championship as they both saw action during last year’s tournament.

CIS CHAMPIONSHIP INFO
OPPONENTS - BRIEF LOOK
PARTICIPATING TEAMS
Cape Breton Capers (AUS Champions: 8-3-2 regular season / 3-0 playoffs)
Cape Breton Capers (AUS champions: 8-3-2 regular season / 3-0 playoffs)
The Capers come into this year’s championships as one of the hottest teams in the country as they are 10-0-2 in their last 12 games and haven’t lost a game since September 19th when they lost 1-0 to Acadia. After finishing third in the AUS during the regular season, Cape Breton upended Acadia in the Quarter-finals before knocking off last year’s champion, the Dalhousie Tigers, in the Semifinals. The Capers then took out the top team in the AUS, the UPEI Panthers, in the final match to claim the Atlantic championship.
Montreal Carabins (RSEQ champions: 10-1-3 regular season / 2-0 playoffs) Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (OUA champions: 11-1-2 regular season / 3-0 playoffs) Fraser Valley Cascades (CWUAA champions: 8-5-1 regular season / 2-0 playoffs) UPEI Panthers (AUS finalists: 10-0-3 regular season / 1-1 playoffs) Laval Rouge et Or (RSEQ finalists: 8-2-4 regular season / 1-1 playoffs) Queen’s Gaels (OUA finalists: 14-2-0 regular season / 2-1 playoffs) UBC Thunderbirds (CWUAA finalists: 8-5-1 regular season / 1-1 playoffs) CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE (All times LOCAL: Atlantic Time) Wednesday, Nov. 10 6:00pm All-Canadian Awards Banquet Thursday, Nov. 11 10:00am Quarter-final 1: Cape Breton vs. Queen’s (SSN Canada webcast) 1:00pm Quarter-final 2: Fraser Valley vs. Laval (SSN Canada webcast) 4:00pm Quarter-final 3: Wilfrid Laurier vs. UBC (SSN Canada webcast) 7:30pm Quarter-final 4: Montreal vs. UPEI (SSN Canada webcast) Friday, Nov. 12 1:00pm Consolation 1: Loser QF 1 vs. Loser QF 2 (SSN Canada webcast) 4:00pm Consolation 2: Loser QF 3 vs. Loser QF 4 (SSN Canada webcast) Saturday, Nov. 13 1:00pm Semifinal 1: Winner QF 1 vs. Winner QF 2 (SSN Canada webcast) 4:00pm Semifinal 2: Winner QF 3 vs. Winner QF 4 (SSN Canada webcast) 7:00pm Consolation final (SSN Canada webcast) Sunday, Nov. 14 10:00am Bronze medal (SSN Canada webcast)
Montreal Carabins (RSEQ Champions: 10-1-3 regular season / 2-0 playoffs) The RSEQ champions have been one of the top teams in Canada all year, finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the country behind the Queen’s Gaels. The Carabins outscored their opponents 46-8 during the regular season, with their only blemish coming at the hands of the Laval Rouge et Or. After finishing first in the RSEQ, Montreal defeated Sherbrooke in the semifinals before overcoming the Rouge et Or is the championship match. Eva Thouvenot led the Carabins in scoring this year with 10 goals in 14 games. Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (OUA Champions: 11-1-2 regular season / 3-0 playoffs) Laurier is returning to the national championship after a one year hiatus. The Golden Hawks come in as the surprising OUA Champions, after defeating the No. 1 Queen’s Gaels in the final match of the OUA Final Four tournament last weekend. With only one defeat on the season, that to the Windsor Lancers, the Golden Hawks will be a favourite to win the championship. Laurier’s lineup includes OUA West Player of the Year Tania Pedron, whose play in the OUA Championship match earned her Game MVP as she shutdown the Gaels potent offensive attack. Fraser Valley Cascades (CWUAA Champions: 8-5-1 regular season / 3-0 playoffs) First year head coach Rod Biesbrecht has the Canada West Champions playing their best soccer of the season as they come into the CIS Championship. Despite being unranked all season, the upstart Cascades mowed down the competition in the playoffs, knocking off the two-time CIS Champions, the Trinity Western Spartans, in the semifinals before defeating UBC in the championship match. Similar to the Brock Badgers in 2008, Fraser Valley will be an up-andcoming team to watch at this year’s tournament. UPEI Panthers (AUS Finalists: 10-0-3 regular season / 1-1 playoffs) The host Panthers come into the CIS Championship after seeing their unbeaten run ended in the AUS Championship by the Cape Breton Capers. UPEI finished the season ranked No. 7 in Canada and will be making their second consecutive appearance in the national championship after finishing sixth last year. Laval Rouge et Or (RSEQ Finalists: 8-2-4 regular season / 1-1 playoffs) Laval has the ability to make some noise at this year’s tournament after handing the No. 2 team in the country, the Montreal Carabins, their only loss of the season. Making their first appearance since a fifth place finish in 2007, Laval will look to Marwa Chebbi and Melissande Guy to lead their team after the two finished with nine and eight goals respectively this year.
1:00pm Championship final (SSN Canada webcast)
UBC Thunderbirds (CWUAA Finalists: 8-5-1 regular season / 1-1 playoffs) Championship Website: http://english.cis-sic.ca/championships/wsoc/index
The winners of five national championships, the Thunderbirds are another team that surprised the competition in the playoffs to advance to Charlottetown. UBC upset the top-ranked team in Canada West, the Alberta Pandas, 2-1 in the semifinals after finishing the season fourth in the conference. Look for Janine Frazao to play a big role in any success that the Thunderbirds have here this week.
