Queen’s Queen’s gaels gaels -- Women’s Women’s SOCCER SOCCER
HEAD COACH
Dave McDowell McDowell is entering his 25th season as head coach of the Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team. A two-time CIS Coach of the Year, McDowell has guided the Gaels to three national championship titles, in 1988, 2010 and 2011, as well as four provincial titles, in 1988, 2001, 2002 and 2011. Under his guidance, Queen’s has posted a combined record of 263-73-64, including OUA and CIS playoffs, for an impressive 0.774 winning percentage. During his tenure, the Gaels have posted 10 or more wins in the regular season six times, including a team record 14 during the 2010 season. A coach who blends both solid offensive and defensive tactics, the Gaels have allowed 10 or more goals only three times during the regular season in his 24 years at the helm. Offensively, McDowell’s squads are consistently among the league leaders in the nation, highlighted by a team record 55 goals in 2012. McDowell has been recognized as the OUA Coach of the Year seven times during his career at Queen’s, winning 18 provincial medals (four gold, nine silver, five bronze) and five national medals (three gold, one silver, one bronze). MEDIA notes - 2012
SEASON RECAP The 2012 edition of the Queen’s Gaels have quietly put together another championship-calibre season. The Gaels were a consistent presence in the CIS Top Ten, starting with the top spot in the first poll of the year, and finishing at No. 6. The Gaels got off to a slow start in 2012 as they dropped their second game of the year, a 3-0 decision to the Ottawa Gee-Gees – who would go on to win the OUA title after an undefeated season, and also were held to a scoreless draw in Toronto by the Varsity Blues. However, as the temperature cooled, the Gaels found their form, as they rolled off an eight-game unbeaten streak that was halted by the Gaels’ old nemesis, the U of T Varsity Blues. After that brief hiccup, the Gaels closed the season on a six-game unbeaten streak, and did not allow a goal through their last 452 minutes. In their penultimate game of the regular season, the Gaels exacted a measure of revenge on the GeeGees, holding them to a 0-0 draw. Led by OUA First Team All-Star Jessie De Boer of North Vancouver, B.C., the Gaels had a stifling defence, with 11 shutouts and only nine goals allowed in 16 games. Up front, the Gaels scored a CIS-high, and team record, 55 goals, including an 8-1 goalfest against Nipssing and a 9-0 shutout of the Ryerson Rams. For those who watched the Gaels’ penalty-kick exploits in 2011, the Gaels’ playoff journey in 2012 will seem oddly familiar. In the OUA quarterfinal at the West Campus Field, the Gaels were three minutes (plus stoppage time) away from seeing their bandwagon halted before it ever left the station. Queen’s trailed 1-0 to Toronto for most of the game, before Alexis McKinty tied the game up in the 88th minute, sending the contest into extra time. McKinty added the game-winner in the first extra session, and a goal by Tessier sealed matters, giving the Gaels a 3-1 win over U of T, their first win over the Blues in three tries. At the OUA Final Four in Ottawa, the Gaels were drawn against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks for the fourth year in a row. Befitting a battle of two old fighters, the teams fought to a scoreless draw through 120 minutes, before Laurier finally advanced on penalty kicks, avenging last year’s home loss in the OUA Championship. In the OUA Bronze Medal game – and the Gaels’ last chance to qualify for nationals, once again the Tricolour was minutes from elimination. This time it was OUA First Team All-Star Riley Filion who played the hero. The fourth-year midfielder found the net in the 87th minute, sending the game into extra time, tied at 1-1. After a scoreless half-hour, the game proceeded to penalties, where Laura Callendar’s goal in the eighth round of the shootout sent the Gaels to the West Coast, as they won the shootout 4-3, and the game 2-1. he Gaels had five players earn OUA honours in 2012, with DeBoer, Filion and Tessier being named to the East Division first All-Star team, while Alexis McKinty and Mikyla Kay were named to the Second Team.

Gaels open season with shutout of RMC
Gaels shut out by No. 3 Gee-Gees
A pair of goals by Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) led the Queen’s Gaels to a 6-0 shutout of the RMC Paladins in OUA women’s soccer action at the West Campus Field in Kingston.
A pair of goals by Julia Francki (Orleans, Ont.) led the No. 3-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 3-0 win over the No. 1-ranked Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s soccer action at the West Campus Field in Kingston.
Siu, who entered the game as a substitute in the 38th minute, scored in the stoppage time of the first half, and added another goal in the 72nd minute, as the Gaels cruised to the victory. Brenna Burton (Ottawa, Ont.) put the Gaels on the board in the tenth minute, while Jessie De Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.) followed up in the 25th minute. The Gaels put the game away late in the first half, as Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg, Man.) scored in the 38th minute, and Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) found the net in the 45th minute, one minute before Siu’s first marker. The Gaels led 5-0 at the interval. Queen’s outshot RMC 20-2, with Filion, De Boer, Burton and Tessier each taking three shots on goal. Sabrina Carew (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) combined to earn the clean sheet, with Carew making two saves in the first half. Olivia Clarke made 14 saves for RMC, but suffered the loss.
Francki scored her first goal in the 40th minute, leaving the Gee-Gees with a 1-0 lead at the half, and completed her brace in the 57th minute of play with a 30-yard strike. Chelsea Lanos (Ottawa, Ont.) put another goal on the board in the 68th minute off a corner kick. The Gaels were forced to a predominantly defensive game and were unable to put up any shots in the first half, as there finally outshot 8-2. Sabrina Carew (Thunder Bay, Ont.) for the Gaels played all 90 minutes and had 5 saves, while Ottawa’s Cynthia Leblanc (Granby, Que.) made two saves and kept a clean sheet.

GOALIES: Queen’s: Tyrell Toronto: Petrucci Gaels held to a scoreless draw by U of T in women’s soccer The No. 1-ranked Queen’s Gaels were held to a scoreless draw by the U of T Varsity Blues at the Varsity Centre. The Gaels had a pair of chances to pick up the win in the late stages, but the crossbar and Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci (Bolton, Ont.) combined to give the host side a share of the spoils. After a first half that saw neither team create many scoring opportunities, the Gaels’ Laura Callendar (Nepean, Ont.) saw a glorious chance in front of the Toronto net go begging in the 68th minute. Toronto held the edge for the next ten minutes, as Mel Bowen and Diana Esteireio both fired shots wide of the net. It was the Gaels who looked closest to breaking the deadlock in the final stages of the match. Riley Filion (Alexandria, Ont.) found herself open at the top of the six-yard box with the game on her foot, but her shot found the crossbar. At the 90-minute mark, a Queen’s corner kick set up the Gaels’ last best chance to take full points, but Jessie De Boer had her shot saved by Petrucci. Madison Tyrell picked up the shutout for the Gaels, making one save. The clean sheet was the Gaels’ eighth in their last ten regularseason and playoff games.
GOALIES: Queen’s: Carew Trent: Webb Gaels cruise to a 4-0 shutout win at Trent The No. 4-ranked Queen’s Gaels put four balls past the home Trent Excalibur en route to their third win of the young season in OUA women’s soccer action at Justin Chiu Stadium in Peterborough, Ont. All four goals came in the second half for the defending national champions. Jessie De Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.) got the Gaels on the board eight minutes into the second period. 12 minutes later, Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg, Man.) made it a two-goal lead for the visiting team. The Gaels rounded out the scoring with two more insurance goals: one by Laura Callendar (Nepean, Ont.) in the 75th-minute and the other through a pass that scrambled across the box into the stride of Kayla Crnic (Milton, Ont.) for the one-time strike in the 90th minute to seal the victory over the home team. Gaels goalkeeper Sabrina Carew (Thunder Bay, Ont.) grabbed the shutout in the win and the Gaels now improve to a 3-1-1 record.
GOALIES: Queen’s: Tyrell Carleton: Morsky No. 4 Gaels battle to scoreless draw against Carleton The No. 4-ranked Queen’s Gaels were held to a scoreless draw against the Carleton Ravens in OUA women’s soccer action at the West Campus Field. The game was marked by strong defensive plays from the Gaels’ fullbacks and a series of great corners throughout the match. Offensively, Queen’s pressured the Carleton defence and had three of their four scoring opportunities from corner kicks in the first half. Carleton matched the Gaels’ efforts, with three shots of their own taken from outside the eighteen-yard box, however the shots could not get passed the Queen’s goalkeeper Madison Tyrrell. The second half mirrored the first, with Queen’s outshooting Carleton three shots to two. Overall, the Gaels outshot the Ravens seven to five, but despite the numerous attempts at goal and the tremendous efforts put forth by both teams they could not find a goal, leaving the game at 0-0 score. Anna Morsky made seven saves for the Ravens to pick up the shutout. For the Gaels, today’s game is their fifth clean sheet in six games.

Burton’s brace gives Gaels win over Laurentian
KINGSTON, Ont. - The No. 6 Queen’s Gaels defeated the Nipissing Lakers, 8-1, in a one-sided, rain-soaked OUA women’s soccer match on West Campus Field.
A pair of goals by Breanna Burton led the Queen’s Gaels to a 4-1 win over the Laurentian Lady Vees in OUA women’s soccer action at the West Campus Field.
Jackie Tessier of Winnipeg set the tone for the Gaels in the seventh minute, as she tapped in her first goal of the match, assisted by Breanna Burton of Ottawa. Her second goal came in the 30th minute as she shot a bullet past Kelly Van Boxmeer, the Nipissing goalkeeper from Collingwood, Ont. The Gaels entered half with a 2-1 lead over the Lakers.
The Gaels got off to a flying start, as Jackie Tessier fired a shot off the crossbar minutes into the game. After that early attempt, Burton found the net in the sixth minute, putting Queen’s up 1-0. Burton scored again in the 15th minute to double the Gaels’ lead. Julie Lopez replied for the Lady Vees in the 27th minute, giving the Gaels a 2-1 halftime lead.
Queen’s took control and dominated the second half. Jessie De Boer of North Vancouver, B.C. opened the scoring in the 50th minute and added another in the 61st minute. Three minutes later, Tessier put in another to complete her hat trick. The Gaels did not let up, as Breanna Burton scored a pair, in the 66th and 81st minutes. Kayla Crnic of Milton Ont. slid one past the goalkeeper with a couple minutes remaining to close out the scoring. Sabrina Carew of Thunder Bay, Ont. gave another strong performance for the Gaels in net, making two saves to pick up the win.
The Gaels’ run continued in the second half, as Brittany Almeida scored in the 53rd minute, off a Laurentian defender. Tessier closed out the scoring in the 71st minute. The Gaels played with great communication and aggressive offense, notably along the right side of the field. Striker Jennifer Siu set up several plays and assisted Tessier’s gameending marker.
Braelyn MacMaster of Alexandria scored the lone goal for the Lakers, a first-half marker.

No. 6 Gaels edge RMC 2-1 Two early first half goals gave the Gaels (71-2) a 2-1 win over their neighbours Royal Military College (3-7-0) in OUA women’s soccer action at RMC. The Gaels wasted no time beginning their attack. Breanna Burton scored at the two minute mark from a cross from Laura Callendar, putting the Gaels in front early. Jackie Tessier continued her strong performance as she put away a scramble past RMC goalkeeper Oliva Clarke in the 16th minute to put the Gaels up 2-0 over their neighbours going into the second half. Despite a resilient defensive effort and controlling the game in the second half, the Gaels let in an unfortunate goal in the 88th minute as they lost possession of the ball in their defensive third and RMC capitalized. Striker Emma Perry picked up the ball outside the eighteen and dribbled it in, cutting the lead to 2-1, but it was too little too late. Gaels goalkeeper Madison Tyrell made a key save in the second half as she leaped in the air to prevent a goal in the 2-1 win.
Gaels suffer home loss to U of T A pair of goals two minutes apart keyed the Toronto Varsity Blues to a 3-1 victory over the Queen’s Gaels in OUA women’s soccer action at the West Campus Field. Melissa Bowen opened the scoring in the 20th minute, while Diana Esteireiro scored in the 22nd minute, as the Blues handed the No. 7-ranked Gaels only their second loss of the season. Breanna Burton scored in response for the Gaels, in the 73rd minute, but Aisha Lewis put the game away from Toronto with her marker at two minutes from time. Sara Petrucci picked up the win in goal for Toronto, making two saves, while Sabrina Carew (Thunder Bay, Ont.) made one save in a losing cause. Toronto outshot Queen’s 4-3.
GOALIES: Queen’s: Tyrell Ryerson: Clarke Gaels cruise to a 9-0 shutout of Ryerson in women’s soccer KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team cruised to a 9-0 win over the Ryerson Rams at the West Campus Field. The women played consistently strong throughout the game, with hat tricks by both Jackie Tessier and Brittany Almeida. The first of Tessier’s three goals came in the 26th minute, and she followed up with another pair before halftime, in the 30th and 38th minutes, the third coming on a penalty kick. Brittany Almeida got her first of three just minutes after Tessier’s third, and Monique Czaczkowski snuck a fifth in to get a 5-0 lead for Queen’s before the interval. In the second half, the Rams came out strong and Sarah Slattery had the visitors’ best chance to break the shutout, but they could not stop the Gaels from scoring four more, thanks to pairs of goals from Almeida in the 60th and 90th minutes, and Breanna Burton, who connected in the 80th and 91st minutes. There was great communication between the women on both teams throughout the game and direction from both goalies, Madison Tyrell for Queen’s, who made one save, and Bronwyn Clark for Ryerson, who made seven.

Filion’s lone goal gives Gaels 1-0 win at Laurentian
KINGSTON, Ont. - The No. 10-ranked Queen’s Gaels put six balls past the host Nipissing Lakers, to notch their ninth win of the season, 6-0, and second over the Lakers in OUA women’s soccer action in North Bay, Ont. on a cold afternoon.
Midfielder Riley Filion’s goal in the 14th minute gave the Queen’s Gaels a shutout victory, 1-0, over the Laurentian Voyageurs in OUA women’s soccer action in Sudbury. With the win, the Gaels completed a sweep of their northern road trip.
The Gaels offence came via a balanced attack, as five different Gaels hit the scoresheet. Jessie De Boer got the Gaels on the board 10 minutes into the game. 14 minutes later, Brittany Almeida made it a two-goal lead for the visiting team. Before the end of the first half, Breanna Burton put one in the back of the net to give the Gaels a comfortable lead going into halftime. The Gaels didn’t slow down in the second half. Just six minutes into play, Almeida put away her second of the game to make it 4-0. The Gaels rounded out the scoring with two more insurance goals: one by Jackie Tessier in the 60th minute and the other by Kayla Crnic in the 84th minute to seal the victory.
Queen’s had six shots on net, while Laurentian had four. Goalkeeper Madison Tyrell was solid for the Gaels in net, making four saves and grabbing the shutout in the win. Queen’s now improves to a 10-2-2 record. Laurentian goalkeeper Laura van de Valk took the loss, making five saves for the Voyageurs.

The Gaels came out strong in the first half, and finally got their break with two minutes left, as Brittany Almeida put one in the back of the net on the cross from Riley Filion. A minute later, the introduction of Kayla Crnic paid off as she was left alone in the box and made no mistake to put the Gaels up 2-0. Queen’s extended the lead, scoring three goals in the span of five minutes. A string of passes got the offence started for the Gaels, and Almeida tapped it in for her second of the game in the 54th minute. Three minutes later, Filion got her own after collecting two assists earlier, as she fired a rolling rebound from outside the eighteen right past the goalkeeper’s head to make it 4-0. Two minutes later, Jennifer Siu made it five goals for the Gaels, while Almeida completed her hat trick in the 71st minute.

The No. 7-ranked Queen’s Gaels beat the U of T Varsity Blues 3-1 (AET) in OUA quarterfinal action at West Campus Field on a cold and rainy afternoon to advance to the OUA Final Four.
The No. 7 Queen’s Gaels fell 1-0 (5-4 penalty kicks) to the No. 6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA women’s soccer semifinal action in Ottawa.
The Gaels got off to a slow start under the slippery conditions and failed to create any real chances as the Varsity Blues held the ball for most of the first half. They struck first as the ball bounced to Kristin Kletke on the corner and she put it away to put the Blues up 1-0 in the 30th minute. The Gaels came out determined in the second half and created plenty of opportunities early on. Jackie Tessier had a great chance in the 55th minute, but was denied by Toronto goalkeeper Sara Petrucci. After constantly pushing in the second half, the Gaels finally got their break in the 88th minute. Alexis McKinty put it in from in front of the net to tie the score at 1-1, force extra time to keep her Gaels alive, and swing the momentum to the home side.
The Gaels outshot Trent 23-5. Gaels goalkeepers Sabrina Carew and Rachel Burton combined for five saves in the shutout win.
After being all Toronto in the first 88 minutes, the Gaels carried this momentum into extra time. Nine minutes into extra time, McKinty put in her second, squeezing it past Petrucci. Tessier added an insurance marker in the 103rd minute.
Trent goalkeepers Emily Webb and Karlie O’Grady eight and nine saves, respectively.
Madison Tyrell made ten saves for the Gaels in the win. Petrucci also made ten saves.
Laurier, who advanced to their third straight OUA Championship game, won the game in the sixth round of penalty kicks when rookie Kiara Reyes, connected on her chance followed by a miss from Queen’s Breanna Burton. In what was another classic battle between these two rivals, both the Hawks and Gaels took turns in controlling the game throughout the 120 minutes before the shootout. The Golden Hawks held a slight advantage in the first half as Laurier outshot Queen’s 8-5. Queen’s responded stronger in the second half but the game remained scoreless through regulation time. Both teams registered 12 shots and both goaltenders appeared almost impossible to beat. During the two extra time halves, both the Hawks and Gaels had a chance to win it, but the game was sent to penalty kicks. After both goaltenders made enormous saves in the second round, it would take several shooters to break the deadlock. In the sixth round, Reyes calmly deposited her shot in the bottom left corner, while Burton narrowly missed the top left of the net, sending the Hawks to the OUA championship match.

In a shootout featuring great saves by both goalkeepers, Queen’s took it in the eighth round, winning 2-1 (4-3 PKs) to capture the OUA bronze medal. Both the Gaels and Marauders took turns in controlling the game throughout the 120 minutes. The Marauders got on the scoreboard first, as the Gaels’ Mikyla Kay scored an own goal in the 16th minute. With three minutes left to play in regulation, Riley Filion came through for the Gaels, scoring in the 87th minute to tie the game up and force extra time. During the two 15-minute extra time halves, both the Gaels and Marauders had chances to win, but were unable to convert, sending the game to penalty kicks. After the first two shooters scored, the Marauders’ Cristina Leonardelli had her shot stopped by Gaels goalkeeper Madison Tyrell. However, goalkeeper Brittany Duffey responded for the Marauders in the fourth round and turned away Queen’s Sara Buckham. Tied at three goals apiece after four rounds of penalties, the remaining two shooters missed, setting the stage for sudden victory. The next four shooters also missed. Finally, in the eighth round, Laura Callender calmly found the back of net, beating Duffey, but Harrison missed for McMaster, giving the Gaels the OUA bronze.
