WELCOMING MESSAGES

As the 2016-17 athletic season draws to a close, I am pleased to offer my congratulations to our student-athletes, teams, coaches and support staff for another great season of Gaels sport. This 81st edition of the Colour Awards will pay tribute to the accomplishments and achievements over the past year, but it also serves as an important connection to an athletic tradition and legacy of generations of student-athletes who have worn the tricolour in our school’s rich history. This is an exciting time for sport, recreation and physical activity at Queen’s. In the Fall, thanks to the generosity of our alumni, we celebrated the opening of a revitalized Richardson Stadium for our student-athletes and fans to enjoy for years to come while construction on the Innovation and Wellness Centre began in September and is expected to be completed in spring 2018. To our graduating athletes who will soon depart University life to take on new and exciting challenges, I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and future Gaels as these athletes pursue the legacy that you have helped to inspire.

DANIEL R. WOOLF

Principal and Vice-Chancellor

Thank you for your contributions to Queen’s and to the important role that you have played in our rich history of sport. Cha Gheill!

It gives me great pleasure to share in celebrating the accomplishments of our student-athletes and teams at this year’s Colour Awards. Tonight we recognize the student-athletes and teams who have earned our highest honours. We are also celebrating a tremendous athletic community, one that supports and inspires, that is active in community service, and that represents Queen’s as both competitors and ambassadors. Our student-athletes continue to exhibit both academic and athletic excellence. This year, 396 student-athletes earned Academic All-Star status. This is an all-time high for Queen’s, and we continually place among the top five schools in Canada. This achievement, combined with the on– field performance of our student-athletes, reflects the fact that our university is the home of scholars and champions. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes! I would also like to thank the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes, and to the success of our programs. To our student-athletes: all the best with your exams and your future athletic and academic endeavours.

ANN TIERNEY

Vice-Provost & Dean of Student Affairs

The VLC also aims to create a community and support system among all our student-athletes with the goal that all our athletes feel supported on and off the field. The council aims to promote a positive image of Queen’s student-athletes and build relations within Queen’s University and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and Gaels Care community outreach program.

SEASON RECAP

With the old Richardson Stadium torn down and a new one standing in its place, the Gaels had to wait until the fourth week of the season to play their first home game.

RESULTS • Seventh in OUA (3-5) • Lost tie-breaker to Guelph to miss playoffs

Queen’s opened the season with a pair of road losses, first to the eventual Yates Cup Champions from Laurier, and then to the defending conference champions at Guelph. In both games, the tricolour fought hard and even had the lead in the second half.

OUA ALL-STARS • Second Team: Zac Sauer, Wesley Mann, Dominic

With a bye week between their first two games, the Gaels opened the revitalized Richardson Stadium against Western in Week 4. In a 27-13 loss to the rival Mustangs, rookie kicker Nick Liberatore scored all 13 points for Queen’s, keeping the tricolour faithful waiting to do their first Oil Thigh in the new Stadium. The Gaels earned their first win of the season and the first win in the new facility the following week against Toronto 20-5. In the second quarter of the game, Kingston native Eric Dodwell scored the first touchdown in the new home of Queen’s Football to give Queen’s the lead, which they didn’t relinquish for the rest of the game. After a win at Waterloo and a loss at McMaster, the tricolour hosted Windsor at Homecoming in mid-October. Wesley Mann made two interceptions in the win, returning one for a touchdown. Jonah Pataki put the game out of reach early, scoring three touchdowns on over 150 yards rushing in the first half. The final game of the regular season was a win-and-in situation for the Gaels, who were in the hunt for the final OUA playoff spot. Queen’s was matched up with a nationally ranked team from Ottawa, and it was the tricolour ahead on the scoreboard for all of regulation. When starting quarterback Nate Hobbs was injured, Kyle Gouveia took the reins, throwing two touchdowns in the game. After Ottawa had tied the game to force overtime, Gouveia found Rudy Uhl in the endzone to put the Gaels ahead 41-34. Queen’s season ended when the Gee-Gees scored a two-point conversion following their overtime touchdown.

SEASON RECAP

The Gaels were unstoppable at home in 2016, beating Laurier, McMaster, Trent, and Brock on Nixon Field during the regular season. Queen’s suffered a close loss to Guelph and a low-scoring tie against Western in a pair of road games, which gave them a 6-1-1 record at the end of the year—good enough for second place and a bye to the semifinals. The Gaels hosted Western in the playoffs, and the tricolour came from behind to beat the Mustangs 28-24 on a lastsecond try from Dylan Young in front of a raucous home crowd. Queen’s started their final possession of the game with two minutes left, needing every second to plunge across the line and book a spot in the OUA Final. The “Drive for Five” consecutive OUA titles was stopped short of its goal when the Gaels lost an extremely even-sided match at Guelph. The teams were tied after regulation, and both teams scored in the first overtime to make it level again at 24-24. Sudden death solved nothing, so two rounds of kicking ensued, with the Gryphons eventually taking the banner. Michael Douros was honoured with the OUA Trillium Award and was joined by four Gaels teammates as OUA All-Stars.
