As the 2012-13 athletic season draws to a close, I am very pleased to recognize and applaud the outstanding achievements of our many student-athletes, coaches, teams and programs this year. Congratulations on another great season of Gaels sport! In addition to tremendous individual and team performances over the past year, we were also pleased to host and celebrate many outstanding championships and events including the opening of our newest field, Nixon Field. Our new field instantly provided a special home field advantage for our men’s and women’s teams as Queen’s played host to the Ontario Provincial Rugby Championships. Later this spring, many of our student-athletes will graduate and depart the University to take on new and exciting challenges. As our newest alumni I wish you the best of luck. I also encourage you to remain engaged and to reach out in support of your respective programs and future Gaels as these athletes pursue the athletic legacy that you have helped inspire and forge.

The Colour Awards mark the official end to the athletic year. It is a wonderful time to acknowledge and pay tribute to the efforts of our student-athletes and teams, and to reflect on your accomplishments and all of the accolades you have received. There have been many outstanding sporting moments from the 2012-13 season. I am particularly proud of our studentathletes who successfully combine academics and athletics, earning Academic All-Star status. Queen’s routinely places among the top three schools in Canada for the number of Academic All-Stars. This achievement, combined with your on-field performance, truly makes our university the home of Scholars and Champions. I also want to congratulate the Varsity Leadership Council and our many OUA/CIS Community Service Award nominees for the leadership role that our teams and athletes play in community service initiatives. Thanks too, to the many coaches, support staff and volunteers who are integral to the exceptional experiences of our student-athletes and to the success of our programs. I wish you the best of luck with your exams and I look forward to seeing the Gaels back in action in 2013-14.

Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and team support staff on a successful 2012-13 athletic season. There have been many highlights this season, and we are proud to come together as a Gaels community to recognize the outstanding performances of our athletes and teams. It was another banner season for Queen’s; congratulations to our provincial champions in men’s rugby, men’s fencing (3peat), women’s hockey, cycling (3-peat) and women’s rowing. Congratulations also to our many medal-winning teams and athletes. For those of you receiving awards this evening, congratulations on your accolades - they are especially notable give the immense competition present in our programs. My sincerest thank you to our dedicated coaches, team captains, support staff, alumni and team supporters who combine to create an environment supportive to our athletes who pursue excellence on the court, field, turf, track, ice, water and in the classroom.

The Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) exists as a forum for varsity athletes to discuss the athletic experience at Queen’s, provide recommendations to Queen’s Athletics & Recreation and facilitate interaction between all varsity student-athletes. The council aims to promote a positive image of Queen’s studentathletes and build relations within Queen’s University and Kingston communities through volunteer opportunities and community programs. Finally, the VLC aims to foster a student-athlete culture through team building events and support at home competitions.
This year was an especially great year for volunteer work by our athletes. Receiving recognition for contributions for their generous time and effort towards others, two Gaels were recognized nationally in their sports at the CIS level along with six at the OUA level. A truly remarkable representation of the community spirit at Queen’s. Cha Gheill!!

The team finished with a record of 10-10 in the OUA East, good for fifth place, earning their first playoff appearance since the 2009-10 season. The Gaels didn’t need much time to adjust to new faces as they established themselves as an early OUA East threat starting the season with wins in seven of their first nine, including an upset win over No. 7 Lakehead. A 11476 thrashing of Western on December 1st, marked the first time since February 2011 that the Gaels scored 100 or more points in a game. The Gaels settled in with a 1010 record for the fifth spot in the OUA East with 20 points. Making it back to the OUA playoffs, the Gaels took on the 4th seed Laurentian. Greg Faulkner finished with 26 points while Sukhpreet Singh added 22 of his own but the Voyageurs held on to an early lead to eliminate Queen’s. At the OUA level, Singh was named the OUA East Rookie of the Year as well as a member of the OUA East All-Rookie team joining fellow Gael Roshane Roberts. Faulkner was honoured as a second team OUA East All-Star.

Looking to make an impact in the OUA East with a young talented team, the Gaels battled through injuries to make it to the OUA East semifinal after dispatching the higher seeded Ryerson Rams 86-64 in the quarterfinal while on the road. The team closed out the regular season with a record of 7-13 for 5th in the OUA East. One season highlight was a 67-63 overtime win over Lakehead. Robyn Pearson hit a jump shot to beat the buzzer and tie the game at 59-59 forcing overtime where the Gaels closed out the game. One week earlier the Gaels put up 92 points in a win over Waterloo. Liz Boag scored an astounding 22 points in the first half in their 86-64 OUA quarter-final playoff win over Ryerson. In the semifinal, the Gaels drew the one seed Ottawa who topped Queen’s 72-44. Boag was honored as a second team OUA All-Star. She finished the regular season as one of the best three-point shooters in the country going 38 for 97.

The men’s cross country team had a successful showing in 2012-13 starting the season by edging out Guelph to finish first at the Queen’s invitational. The top Gael was Jeffrey Archer, who finished third. The season rounded out with trips to London for the Western invitational (4th place), the Paul Short Run in Pennsylvania (26th of 37) and Guelph where the Gaels finished in 6th position with Clay Patterson leading the way in 20th place. A bronze medal finish highlighted a strong Gaels performance at the 2012 OUA Championships in King City, Ont. The Gaels scored 86 points to finish in third place, led by solid performances from Second Team OUA All-Stars Archer and Tyson Loney. At the CIS Championship the Gaels put together a fifth place 162 point finish. Archer was the Gaels’ leading runner finishing in 19th place. Patterson was close behind, finishing in 22nd place. Nick McGraw, 33rd, David Cashin, 44th and Loney, 51st, rounded out the Queen’s scorers.

Queen’s started the season off finishing with 29 points, five ahead of second-place Guelph at the Queen’s Invitational to finish first. Julie-Anne Staelhi was the top Gael, finishing in third place. The other Queen’s scorers were Dunlap (25th), Veronica Allan (39th), Erin Slade (43rd), and Tait (48th). Staehli was named a Second Team All-Canadian at the CIS Championships in London finishing in 14th place. The team finished in 11th place with 273 points. After Staehli, Soehl came in 61st, Tait 72nd, Allan 77th and Slade 81st to round out the finishes.

The Gaels came into the season hoping to improve on their OUA semifinal berth in 2011 with 20 starters returning from last season’s 6-2 squad. The Gaels were ranked sixth in the opening Top 10 of the year, and would remain in the rankings throughout the season. The Gaels downed McGill 23-9 in a preseason contest, the first meeting between the two old rivals since 2007. In regular-season play, Queen’s opened with a pair of wins, 48-13 at home to York and 42-16 at Laurier. They next beat their rivals from Western 18-11 before a sellout crowd of over 10,000 at Richardson Stadium. The Gaels suffered their first loss of the season the next week 33-20 to the eventual Yates Cup champion McMaster Marauders, and closed out September with a comfortable 32-25 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Thanksgiving saw the Gaels win at Windsor for the second straight year, setting up a Week 7 matchup with Guelph that would decide second place in the OUA. At Guelph the Gaels took a first-half lead, only to see Guelph come back and pick up the 32-28 win. The Gaels closed the regular season with a 35-7 win over Toronto, giving them their second straight 6-2 record. In the playoffs, the Gaels once again faced Laurier in the OUA quarter-final, and shut out the Golden Hawks 34-0, setting up a rematch with Guelph in the semifinal. Another late Guelph comeback sent the game to overtime, and a walk-off touchdown in the first extra period gave Guelph a 42-39 (OT) win. 11 Gaels were named OUA All-Stars, with Derek Morris, Giovanni Aprile, Ryan Granberg, John Miniaci, Derek Wiggan, Sam Sabourin, T.J. Chase-Dunawa and Andrew Lue earning first-team honours. Matt Kendrick, Justin Chapdelaine and Chris Patrician were named to the OUA second team on offence. Four Gaels were named All-Canadians, with Chase-Dunawa being named to the first team, while Granberg, Sabourin and Miniaci earned second-team honours.

The Gaels entered with second year forward Corey Bureau taking over the captain duties after Jon Lawrance joined on with the coaching staff. A highlight for the team this year was winning their sixth straight Carr-Harris Cup over RMC 7-2 in front of a record 3,122 fans at the K-Rock Centre. The Gaels made the playoffs once again, finishing one spot better than last season in seventh place. In the OUA East quarter-final series Queen’s drew top 10 ranked Carleton and after a tough loss in game one, the Gaels gave one of Canada’s best a scare in a tough match but were unable to upset the Ravens losing the series.

The Gaels once again were led between the pipes by their goaltender Riley Whitlock who took home the OUA Randy Gregg award for Queen’s which recognizes outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement. Women’s hockey completed one of their best seasons ever, recording a program record 20 wins in the regular season before going on to win the OUA Championship. The Gaels finished in third place in the OUA with a 20-42 record and were ranked in the CIS Top 10 rankings for all 16 weeks reaching as high as four. In the playoffs after beating Windsor and sweeping Guelph, Queen’s took on Western in the OUA Championship. The Gaels continued their strong play sweeping the series after a 4-0 win on the road and a 5-4 win on home ice to secure the OUA Championship. At the CIS tournament the Gaels lost their first two games in overtime to StFX and Calgary. In their game against Calgary Queen’s was able to come back from a 4-1 3rd period deficit to force the extra time. The Gaels closed out the tournament narrowly losing to UBC 2-1. Morgan McHaffie was named an All-Canadian and OUA All-Star this season. Also taking an OUA All-Star spot was Katie Duncan while Alisha Sealey was named an OUA AllRookie.

In 2012, the Gaels won their fourth straight OUA bronze medal. They went on to finish fifth at the Canadian University Rowing Championship in B.C. At the Head of the Rideau, the Gaels picked up wins in the men’s doubles, lightweight men’s coxed four, as well as the lightweight men’s eights. The lightweight eights also picked up a win at the Brock Invitational. At the OUA Championship, the lightweight men’s eights crew of Jordan Rendall, Jordan Wille, Alan PaynoMontoya, Pat McCrady, Matt Christie, Mark Bonar, Brendan Coffey, Chris Zakos, and coxswain Jacob Koudys brought home gold. The Gaels also won provincial medals in the lightweight fours, as Zakos, Coffey, McCrady, Christie and Koudys finished third, as did the heavyweight fours (Joe Kunkel, Albert Harkema, Robert Cooper, Eric Farquharson and coxswain Stephen Tuffner). At the CURC regatta, the lightweight fours crew of Zakos, Rendall, McCrady, Christie and Koudys won gold. Christie placed fourth in the lightweight men’s single, while Locke Davenport-Huyer finished fourth in the singles B final.

The Gaels were led by the lightweight women’s four of Flurry Hogg, Jen Johnston, Kelsey Hayes, Anise Truman and Shelby Stinnissen, who went undefeated through the preliminary regattas and won gold at the OUA’s. Elise Hoffmann and Larkin Davenport-Huyer won gold in the women’s doubles, while the women’s eights crew of Emily Home, Hoffmann, Liz Price, Michelle Truax, Tori Graham, Davenport-Huyer, Chloe DesRoches and Emily Jewell was also undefeated and won gold. Altogether, every women’s rower at the OUA’s earned a medal.

Zola Mehlomakulu was named the OUA women’s Coach of the Year, the second win for the Gaels in the past three years.

The Gaels entered the season committed to avenge their loss to Western in the 2011 league championship. The team opened with a pair of strong road wins over McMaster and Laurier. Western dealt Queen’s its only loss with a 22-20 thriller at Nixon Field, kicking a penalty goal on full time. The Gaels then ran off five straight wins, clinching first place with an impressive 13-0 win at Guelph in the final week of the season. After finishing the regular season with most points scored and fewest against, the Gaels had little trouble dispatching Brock in the OUA semifinals. That set up a rematch at Nixon Field against longtime rival Western for the OUA championship. Captain Dan Moor charged down a kick in the first minute and ran it in to the delight of the 1,000+ fans. Later, Angus MacPhail and Brendan McGovern would also touch down. The dominant performance, led by openside Matt Kelly and man of the match flyhalf Liam Underwood, resulted in the 19th OUA championship for Men’s Rugby. Underwood’s gold medal clinching try was perhaps the finest in the storied history of the program.

Queen’s returned to the CIS championship after a oneyear absence, marking their third trip to the league final, and its second in three years. Queen’s went 11-3 overall, and rose to being ranked as high as No. 3 in the country – their highest-ever national ranking. In regular-season play, the Gaels rattled off six straight wins and scored at least 30 points in every regular-season game. In the playoffs, the Gaels cruised to a quarter-final win over Trent, and fought off a second-half comeback to defeat Waterloo to advance to the OUA Championship. In the league final, an early Guelph try stood up, as the Gryphons narrowly prevailed, 10-6. At the CIS tournament, the Gaels fell 53-10 to the eventual champion StFX. The Gaels were the only team to score a try on StFX this season. After a loss to Concordia, the team rebounded to defeat Acadia 36-22 for fifth-place. Marin MacLeod won the CIS StudentAthlete Community Service Award, while Taylor White was named an All-Canadian.

Men’s Soccer enjoyed their best season in recent memory, as they recorded a team-record 11 wins, on their way to an 11-1-2 regular season, and their first OUA East Division title since 2003. The Gaels opened regular-season play with a 5-0 thrashing of local rivals RMC. After an unlucky 1-1 draw at Ryerson, the Gaels announced their arrival as they pulled out a 2-1 road win over their perennial nemeses from Toronto. That win propelled the Gaels into the CIS Top 10, where they stayed for the rest of the season, and started a five-game winning streak. The Gaels won five of their last six games to finish with 35 points. After a first-round bye, the Gaels hosted UofT in the OUA quarter-final match after a Blues goal in the 114th minute, Patrick Zanetti scored in the 119th minute to send the game to penalty kicks. The shootout went seven rounds before Henry Bloemen scored to send the Gaels to the OUA Final Four for the first time since 2007. At the Final Four, the Gaels took the McMaster Marauders to extra time, but fell 5-2 in the semifinal, then took a 1-0 loss to York in bronze match.

The Gaels entered the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country, coming off back-to-back national titles. Queen’s finished second in the OUA East with an 11-2-3 record. In the OUA playoffs the Gaels beat UofT as Alexis McKinty scored in the 88th minute to tie the match and the Gaels went on to victory in extra time. Next up was the OUA Final Four and in the semifinal Queen’s drew their rivals Laurier who edged the Gaels out 1-0 in penalty kicks. In the bronze medal game Riley Filion scored in the 87th minute to force extra time and in the 8th round of penalties Laura Callendar scored the winner, securing a trip to the national championship. At the CIS tournament Queen’s eased past Dalhousie in their first match 2-0 and faced Ottawa in the semifinal, a team the Gaels had been unable to beat in the regular season. Breanna Burton notched two goals for a 4-1 win. For the third year in a row the Gaels were in the CIS Championship game, this year against Trinity Western. After turning over a large chunk of the roster from their championship season a year ago, the young Gaels team proved capable of competing with Ontario’s best with the future looking bright for the team. After dropping their first game to the eventual CIS finalists McMaster, the Gaels rallied winning seven of their next nine games proving themselves to be a top team in the OUA. Closing out the season with a fourth place finish and an 11-7 record, the Gaels drew the York Lions in their OUA quarter-final. In a tight match that went to extra points in the fifth set the Lions came out on top to end the Gaels season. Two Gaels were honoured by the OUA for their accomplishments this season. Veteran setter Jackson Dakin was named a first team OUA All-Star and took home the Dale Iwanoczko Award for his dedication to volleyball, academics and community involvement. Rookie libero Ivo Dramov was named to the all-rookie team in his first season with the Gaels.

With a young core emerging into starters roles the women’s volleyball team made their seventh straight playoff appearance finishing 12-6 and fourth in the OUA, coming off their championship season. Starting out the season 2-2 after their first four games, the Gaels were simply dominant from the start of November to end of January winning nine straight games and dropping only seven sets in the process. As the fourth seed entering the playoffs the Gaels hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues in their OUA quarter-final. With the teams splitting the first two sets at a win each, Toronto pulled ahead to take the win in a game that could have gone either way with two of the sets being extended upon regulation. Two Gaels were honoured by the OUA this season as Colleen Ogilvie was named a first team OUA AllStar marking the third time in her career to be named to an all-star team. First year Brett Hagarty was also acknowledged, picking up a spot as an OUA All-Rookie.

In its inaugural year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) has implemented several programs that have brought Queen’s athletes into closer contact with the Kingston community. It has recruited a number of volunteers to mentor young adolescents through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kingston. In December of 2012, the studentathlete community went above and beyond expectations and collectively sponsored 11 family and 51 individual holiday dinners through Martha’s Table, a local soup kitchen. Currently, the VLC is establishing a School Visit program promoting the value of daily physical activity and healthy living in Kingston elementary schools. In January, the VLC hosted an event on “Super Saturday,” a day where 5 of our varsity teams were in competition. Over 250 athletes were present, supporting their fellow Gaels and demonstrated the spirit and unity that Queen’s University is known for. Moving into the 2013-14 academic year, the VLC is excited to build upon its previous successes, and increase the scale and scope of its outreach opportunities. It is our hope that in the future, community involvement will be a fundamental component of the Queen’s athletic experience.

The Jim Tait Trophy is presented annually to the top performing Varsity Team. This award recognized the team's competitive success, community involvement and other attributes which have brought the most honour and recognition to Queen's.
In Honour of Dr. Hal W. Dunlop - This award was instituted in 1980 by Dr. Dunlop’s many friends and colleagues in the Queen’s sporting fraternity. This award is given annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to “Athletic Therapy” at Queen’s.
Prior to 2010-11 season, the Jim Tait Trophy was awarded to a varsity male athlete who best displays the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, dedication and an exceptional contribution to men’s inter-university team sports.
