HEAD COACH
SEASON REVIEW
DAVE MCDOWELL
With a large influx of first-year players taking on large roles for Queen’s in 2015 it was understandable that the team took a few weeks before they were able to get their first win.
Dave McDowell is entering his 28th season as head coach of the Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team. A two-time CIS Coach of the Year and the 2012 winner of the OUA Fox40 Coach of the Year award, McDowell has guided the Gaels to three national championships, in 1988, 2010 and 2011, as well as four provincial crowns, in ‘88, ‘01, ‘02 and ‘11. Under his guidance, Queen’s has posted a combined record of 296-84-81, including OUA and CIS playoffs, for an impressive 0.730 winning percentage. During his tenure, the Gaels have posted 10 or more wins in the regular season six times, this mark also includes a team record 14 during the 2010 season. McDowell, a member of the Queen’s men’s soccer team from 1983-87, has been recognized as the OUA Coach of the Year seven times during his career at Queen’s, winning 18 provincial medals (3 gold, 9 silver, 6 bronze) and five national medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). A Level 4 NCCP certified coach, the Northern Ireland native lives in Kingston with his wife Laura and their two children, Owen and Dannan. Career Record Reg. The season started off with a trip to Ottawa against the defending OUA champion Gee-Gees. The Gaels were able to steal points with a tie but it took them until September 12 to pick up their first win starting off 0-1-3. A 10-0 win propelled the Gaels as they never lost on the road for the rest of the season. Queen’s won four of five games to close out September which included big wins at Toronto and Ryerson. Queen’s started off October at home to Ottawa once again and were able to earn a 0-0 draw. The Gaels closed out October with three wins and four ties to bring their season record to 7-2-7 settling in at fifth place in the OUA East despite only one team losing less games than Queen’s. In the playoffs the Gaels started off with a trip to Toronto where the Gaels and Varsity Blues needed extra time to decide a winner. Tara Bartram scored in the 116th minute to give the Gaels a late lead as they held on for the win. Next they traveled to Sudbury with a trip to the Final Four on the line. The Gaels struck early as Bartram continued her hot touch netting a goal just four minutes in. OUA All-Star Micah Vermeer notched another for the Gaels just four minutes later and they finished with a 2-1 victory. In the OUA Final Four Queen’s, as the lower East seed, drew the top team in the OUA West the No.2 team in the country the York Lions. After the Gaels took a late lead in the 61st minute thanks to captain Jessie de Boer, York was able to respond in the 81st minute sending the match to extra time. After no scoring in extra time Queen’s and York were off to penalties to decide a winner. In the eighth round with the teams all square Madison Tyrell dove to her right to secure a big save to give the Gaels a chance to win. Rookie All-Star Lidia Bradau stepped up and made no mistake to send the Gaels to the championship game. In the OUA Championship Queen’s secured a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute thanks to Bartram once again. This time the Gaels were able to hold onto their late lead and secure the OUA Championship.

Bartram nets OT winner, Gaels eliminate Blues
Gaels triumph over Laurentian, advance to the OUA Final Four
TORONTO, Ont. (October 28, 2015)- The Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team are one victory away from returning to the OUA Final Four after recording a dramatic overtime victory, 1-0, over the Toronto Varsity Blues in the provincial capital on Wednesday evening.
SUDBURY, Ont. (November 1, 2015) - The Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team punched their ticket to the OUA Final Four on Sunday afternoon in northern Ontario, upsetting second-seeded Laurentian 2-1 in the conference quarter-finals.
GAME FLOW Third-year striker Tara Bartram broke the scoreless deadlock with just five minutes left in the second overtime period and penalty kicks looming after a classic playoff affair that, in spite of producing the long goal, was filled with chances for both the Gaels and Blues throughout the first 114 minutes of play. The contest took a more dramatic turn in the overtime period, where the squads exchanged shots that rang off the other’s crossbar.
GAME FLOW The Gaels wasted no time opening the scoring, making good on two opportunities within the first 10 minutes of the match. Tara Bartram (Vancouer), who connected on the game-winner in Wednesday’s playoff match at Toronto, found the goal for the second time in as many post-season matches, tallying the game’s first goal in the 4th minute. Micah Vermeer (Grimsby, Ont.) doubled the Queen’s lead four minutes later, and the visitors would maintain their lead throughout the first 45 minutes of the half.
After Rachel Radu (Ottawa) launched a shot that swung off the crossbar above the head of Blues keeper Sara Petrucci in the first overtime period, which was followed minutes later by a free-kick attempt by Christine Mulligan that bounced off the upright, much to the relief of Gaels stopper Michaila Frawley, who made two saves to earn the clean sheet for Queen’s.
Laurentian cut the Gaels lead down to one early in the second half on a goal from Sarah Sanford in the 51st minute. That would be as close as the hosts would get, however, as Queen’s goalkeeper Michaila Frawley (Victoria, B.C.) turned aside five shots to earn her second playoff win of the year.
Following those two near scores, the game seemed destined to be decided by penalties, until Bartram turned what look to be an innocent throw-in into the game-clinching marker. The Vancouver native created some space for herself off the Gaels throw-in from about the 20-yard line, and gracefully tipped the ball over the Blues defender before using her arcing the ball with a powerful strike into the top-right corner past the diving Petrucci.
BY THE NUMBERS 16- The number of shots Queen’s fired towards Laurentian keeper Richele Greenwood 2- The number of yellow cards handed out to Queen’s, both in the last 10 minutes of the match 6- The amount of Gaels appearances in the OUA Final Four weekend over the last seven seasons
From there, the Gaels were able to run out the clock by taking the ball to the corner flag in Blues territory, clinching a meeting with the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday afternoon in the OUA quarter-finals. The winner of that match will earn a berth in the OUA Final Four, featuring the top two teams in the conference’s East and West divisions. Queen’s is looking to return to the Final Four after a one-year absence. Before missing last year’s conference tournament, the women had reached the Final Four the previous five seasons. BY THE NUMBERS 115:05 - Time of the Gaels goal to take a 1-0 lead 5 of 6 - Of the Gaels last OUA playoff games have seen extra time including today and four of which went to penalties

Nov. 7, 2015 Ottawa, Ont.
Gaels with a 7-6 win in penalty kicks over York, head to OUA Championship Sunday and qualify for CIS Championship OTTAWA (November 7, 2015) - The Queen’s Gaels pulled off the upset with a 7-6 penalty kicks victory over the No.2 York Lions and will advance to the OUA Championship Sunday. With the win Queen’s also qualifies for the CIS championship next weekend at UBC. With the victory, the Gaels advanced to Sunday’s OUA championship match and also earned a berth in the CIS championships next week in Vancouver. With the game tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation and another 30 of overtime, the two teams lined up for penalty kicks. Queen’s goalkeeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) stopped the first shot she faced and York’s Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) stopped the second, and otherwise every player that stepped up to the spot found the back of the net through seven rounds. In the eighth round, Tyrell dove to her right to stop the shot off the foot of Marilyn Grammenopoulos (Whitby, Ont.), and then Lidia Bradau (Woodbridge, Ont.) made no mistake to clinch the victory. The two teams played a tentative opening half an hour, but action started picking up after that point. In the 33rd minute, the Gaels were awarded a corner and Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) took a beautiful shot that curled straight for the net and hit in the inside of the far post, but it bounced out of harm’s way and the game remained scoreless heading into halftime. The scoring was finally opened in the 62nd minute on a goal by the Gaels’ Jessie De Boer (North Vancouver, B.C.). She sent a high cross into the box that carried all the way into the net in the far corner to give Queen’s a 1-0 lead. The intensity quickly picked up after that and the Lions nearly got the equalizer just minutes later on a hard shot from Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.), but Tyrell made a beautiful save to preserve the one-goal lead. With just nine minutes remaining on the clock the Lions tied it on a fantastic second effort by Colleen Beesley (Richmond Hill, Ont.), who had subbed into the game just minutes before. Ghoneim sent another shot on net that Tyrell stopped, but the Beesley stayed with the play and tucked the rebound into the net to equal the score at 1-1. The Lions controlled the play for most of overtime, although both teams had their chances. Sydney Hoareau (Brampton, Ont.) had a strong shot that hit the crossbar 13 minutes into the extra frame, and with seven minutes remaining a rush by the Lions ended with the ball rolling just past Hoareau’s outstretched leg. In the dying moments, Grant made a fantastic diving save to her right to keep the ball out and send it to penalty kicks. Grant finished with six saves in the game, the most she’s had in one contest this season, while Tyrell was the star all day with a number of key saves, finishing with 12 overall plus the two in the shootout.

Nov. 8, 2015 Ottawa, Ont.
Gaels defeat Golden Hawks 1-0 to win 2015 OUA Championship OTTAWA - The Queen’s women’s soccer team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 on a goal from Tara Bartram to win the 2015 OUA Championship title. This was the Gaels first OUA Championship win since they last won it in 2011. Queen’s has won three national championships in their team history. Their first was in 1988, followed by back to back national championships wins in 2010 and 2011. Jessie de Boer (North Vancouver) is the only remaining player from their last national championship victory. Coming in off of a penalty kick win over the undefeated York Lions in the OUA semifinals, the Gaels kept that momentum rolling into the OUA Championship on Sunday afternoon against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The first half saw both teams playing strong defensively but it was the Gaels attack that came out with most of the pressure as they fired 11 shots towards the goal but could not net one on Laurier’s goalkeeper Ashely Almeida. The second half featured the Golden Hawks beginning to take momentum on the offensive side as they were able to get eight shots off with three of them on target but Queen’s goalkeeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock) made every save. The Gaels finally broke through offensively in the 69th minute when striker Tara Bartram (Vancouver) was able to get free on the left side of the 18-yard box striking the ball into the opposite side of the net to give Queen’s a crucial 1-0 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play. The Gaels defence came up strong once again in the dying minutes of the championship as they held the Golden Hawks attacks in check as they went on to win their first OUA Championship in five years. FINAL SAY “Couldn’t be prouder of our team. To emerge as champions from a final four with the quality that was on display this weekend is tremendous.
