A Moral Failing of the Biden Administration by: Gabriel Korth

Just over 60 years ago, John F. Kennedy signed into law the United States trade embargo on Cuba. In a conflict culminating in the Cuban missile crisis, these countries have long been unable to normalize relations with one another. Cubans themselves are fed up with bearing the burden of sanctions supposedly aimed at their government. Obama let up on embargoes, but Trump only strengthened them, and now we are left in a peculiar position. Why hasn’t Biden loosened his policy on remittance despite his promises? lack of meaningful action seems puzzling. The people of Cuba have suffered for an incredibly long time, and a continued thawing of relations between these two countries should be in order by now, right? Well, it hasn’t, and the Biden administration could have done better by this point. The aims of the original trade embargo still subsist to this day, upheld through continuous political action. To understand this issue, we need to take a couple of president-sized steps back in time. Upon Obama’s election, the United States began to loosen policy on Cuba. Among XVIII.3
