FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief
Welcome to the April 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. We are gearing up to celebrate our 100th issue release. Can you believe it? Not me! It is an indescribable feeling when I look back at where I came from. When I look back at that very first issue. LOL Oh My!!!!! I have readers that have supported us from day one. Readers who have watched our growth. I can’t say thank you enough for your support. We also have readers who are brand new, who are just getting to know us. They are no less important than our day ones. In an industry where the average magazine doesn’t make it past 3 years, we are still here and we owe it all to you all. Thank you! And speaking of support, let’s continue to support each other. We talk a lot about the brands that don’t support us; and I get it. We deserve to have just as many options as the next person. And yes we should keep on talking about it. But what I want to see is the individuals who are busy creating clothing for us get just as much conversation. Let’s talk more about them. It is no surprise to anyone that I am always rooting for the underdogs; the ones that have to fight ten times as hard just to win. There are some really good brands that cater to us. Why aren’t we making them rich? Why are we not trying to introduce them to the world of fashion that may not know who they are? They deserve to be mentioned in these conversations. I just wanted to get that off my chest. Go online and shout your favorite plus size brands once a week. Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

iscovering a better version of yourself is all about striking balance. That’s especially true when it comes to making smarter food choices that you can maintain over time. A sustainable, long-term healthy eating approach, such as the Atkins low-carb lifestyle, emphasizes variety and balance. Start planning a low-carb menu filled with high-fiber carbohydrates, optimal protein and healthy fats with these tips from Colette Heimowitz, vice president of nutrition and education for Atkins. Fill up with fiber-rich foods. Foods like vegetables, nuts, seeds, low-glycemic fruit (like berries) and whole unrefined grains are considered carbohydrates, but they don’t raise your blood sugar the way processed carbs do. Fiber slows the entry of glucose into your bloodstream so you don’t experience insulin spikes that encourage your body to produce and store body fat. Try to eat between 25-35 grams of fiber a day. Reduce inflammation. A low-carb approach eliminates refined and processed foods and sugars that can cause inflammation. Focus on foods that decrease inflammation, such as colorful low-glycemic vegetables, low-sugar fruits, protein and healthy fats such as olive oil. The ground turmeric in this Golden Milk recipe offers an easy way to fight inflammation without sacrificing flavor. Kickstart your morning. Start your day with a protein-packed choice such as these Chocolate Banana Protein Overnight Oats. You’ll get the omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants from the chia seeds along with protein and healthy fats to keep you energized while avoiding high-sugar breakfast alternatives. Find more recipes like these for Salmon and Asparagus Sheet Pan or Spicy Crispy Chickpeas and ideas for a balanced, low-carb approach to eating well at Atkins.com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Keep Your Heart Healthy With These 5 KetoFriendly Foods
The low-carb, high-fat diet known as keto has Americans looking at healthy food consumption in a whole new light. Keto programs have proven effective for weight loss, but how heart-healthy are they? As with all things, moderation is key. To get you started, the experts at South Beach Diet -- a more accessible version of the keto diet – recommend these five keto-friendly, heart-healthy foods: WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2019 2020 ISSUE
KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY WITH THESE 5 KETO-FRIENDLY FOODS | STATEPOINT
1. Full-fat dairy: “Full-fat dairy is healthy,” says Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the South Beach Diet. “For example, you should be eating full-fat yogurt, not low-fat yogurt.”
With zero net carbs, items such as butter and cream are rich in healthy fats. While large amounts are associated with obesity and may cause heart disease, according to many experts, the opposite is true when consumed in moderation, as shown in studies published by the “European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Stick to recommended serving sizes of rich keto foods such as sour cream, cream cheese and yogurt.
2. Eggs: Despite receiving a bad rap for high cholesterol content, eggs are
low in carbs and high in protein and amino acids. And according to the Mayo Clinic, the effect of egg consumption on blood cholesterol is minimal when compared with the effect of trans fats and saturated fats, and their high protein content helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Egg whites contain no cholesterol and are high in protein; while the yolk provides the majority of the egg’s nutritional content. Eaten sensibly, eggs are both ketoand heart-friendly.
3. Shrimp: Shrimp is a versatile superfood, high in protein and
contains more than 20 vitamins and minerals, including selenium, which reduces inflammation and promotes heart health. Seek out wild-caught shrimp to avoid antibiotics. Frozen just after they’re caught, frozen shrimp is usually a good bet, however, if you buy fresh, be sure the shells don’t feel slimy or soft or have a fishy, ammonia-like smell.
4. Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids and
have been proven to lower the risk of heart attack and heart disease. Flaxseed also contains 800 times more of a cancerfighting phytochemical called lignan than any other food. For maximum nutritional benefits, choose ground flaxseed and refrigerate for longevity. Try mixing it into olive oil-based mayo or blending it into your favorite protein shake.
5.
Olive-oil or avocado-oil based mayonnaise: This oftenmaligned condiment is high in heart-healthy, monounsaturated fats, and is a keto staple with its zero grams of net carbs. “Look for varieties without added sugar, which just contributes additional calories without any other nutritional benefits,” says Courtney McCormick, manager, clinical research and Nutrition at South Beach Diet. “Phase one of the South Beach Diet has always been keto-friendly. Get rid of all the white stuff -- white flour, breads and pasta,” says Dr. Agatston. “Once you eliminate them from your diet, your body starts burning fat, and you will feel so much better.” For more information on the South Beach Diet and its keto-friendly options, visit www. southbeachdiet.com. When adopting a keto-style diet, think beyond weight loss. Be sure to include a range of foods that are great for heart health.

AS CBD USE SKYROCKETS, CONSUMERS SHOULD KNOW WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW 70% of all CBD products sold online did not contain the amount of CBD stated on the label - 42% contained a higher concentration of CBD than the label claimed, and 26% of the products contained less.
Before you reach into that jar of CBD gummies, or add some CBD oil to your bath, proceed carefully. Do you really know what’s in that “miracle cure” that you purchased online or at the health store for anxiety or your aching back? Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a component of the cannabis plant lacking the “high” associated with marijuana, and right now products claiming to contain CBD are everywhere - from gummies to cocktails, ice cream to hand cream, and more. An estimated 64 million consumers, according to a January 2019 Consumer Reports survey, have tried products containing CBD in the past two years alone. With widespread marketing that is largely unregulated, CBD purchased online or at stores is often promoted as a one-stop product for a range of potential health benefits, such as relieving stress, soothing aches and pains, reducing inflammation or improving sleep. Interest in - and access to - CBD increased with the passage of the Farm Bill which removed CBD derived from hemp (a variety of cannabis that contains very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) from the list of controlled substances. Although CBD products are now available online or in many stores, health or medical claims made by the product manufacturers are still subject to regulation by the FDA to ensure consumer safety. Through all the current interest surrounding CBD one critical question remains: Are widely available CBD products safe and effective? Photo by Binoid CBD from Pexels

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CBD| BRANDPOINT
Separating fact from fiction
part, because of unproven health claims.
The contents and dosage of CBD products sold in retail stores or online are often unknown and not consistently, if at all, regulated. To navigate the current environment, consumers first need to understand that not all CBD products are equal:
You deserve to know what you’re taking
* FDA-approved drugs have been studied in a rigorous scientific process, including clinical trials to understand their safety profile and effectiveness for specific medical conditions. Non-FDA approved CBD products are not studied this way and there is no credible scientific evidence backing any medical claims made about these products.
* To ensure consistency and quality, FDA-approved medications are tested and manufactured to meet strict federal regulations. Testing standards for non-FDA approved CBD products vary by state, with some requiring no testing. Because of the lack of testing standards, these products may not contain what their labels say.
* Many believe that CBD is natural and therefore safe for general use - this is untrue. As demonstrated in controlled clinical trials, CBD can interact with other medicines or cause side effects. The use of CBD products should be monitored by a health care provider, such as your doctor.
* Only FDA-approved CBD medicines are dispensed by pharmacies and covered by health insurance. So, what’s the bottom line for the millions of people currently using CBD products? As the saying goes, the smart consumer is the wise consumer. The FDA approval process is considered by many to be the gold standard in the medical field and was put in place to protect patients. Taking unregulated CBD products that lack scientific evidence can pose health risks, particularly for very sick patients who may be looking for hope in these products, in
It can be difficult to know if CBD products actually contain what they claim. A 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that almost 70% of all CBD products sold online did not contain the amount of CBD stated on the label - 42% contained a higher concentration of CBD than the label claimed, and 26% of the products contained less. Twenty percent included enough unlabeled THC to cause intoxication, especially in children. The FDA also evaluated some of these products and found that they did not contain the levels of CBD that they claimed. More studies and regulations are needed to ensure these products are safe for consumer use. An important moment in the evolution of CBD occurred in June 2018 when the FDA approved Epidiolex® (cannabidiol) oral solution CV, the first prescription CBD medicine. Because it is a prescription, available in pharmacies just like any other FDAapproved medicine, it is legal throughout the entire U.S. when prescribed by a licensed health care professional. It is the only FDA-approved CBD product currently available. “The approval of Epidiolex is historic not only for the long-awaited relief it provides patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, two very difficult-to-treat epilepsies, but also for the parameters it has put in place for how a CBD medicine should be studied to understand its safety profile and efficacy,” said Justin Gover, CEO of GW Pharmaceuticals, plc, the company responsible for Epidiolex. “We hope that this opens the door for further well-controlled clinical studies of CBD in other medical conditions to achieve FDA approval and ensure patients are getting the medicines they deserve.” To learn more, visit www.StraightFactsCBD.com. GET YOUR GLOW ON | BRANDPOINT
Face it, winter is brutal for your skin and hair. Between the harsh, cold wind outside and the dry, overheated air inside, it’s hard to look your best all winter long. On top of that, everyone tends to overindulge in unhealthy food and drinks during the winter months. Fortunately, there are strategies you can use to enhance your looks while boosting your body’s natural ability to fight off the ill effects of winter. Here are some tips to look your best - even when the weather does its worst. TREAT YOUR SKIN WITH TLC

aiding the body to lose weight, increase energy, reduce cravings and improve digestion. Raw ingredients are more nutritious and loaded with beneficial vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, anti-inflammatory compounds and phytonutrients. The Apple Cider Vinegar Cleanse involves consuming a six-day meal plan day alongside a daily dose of apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar can contain strains of good bacteria and enzymes essential for breaking down foods and acetic acid for various health benefits.
Gently cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize your skin every day. Find products best suited for your skin type and be consistent about using them.
The Cleanse can help rid your body of toxins, jump-start your weight loss and improve gut health and skin health.
Thoroughly remove makeup before bed and use extra moisturizer overnight so you’ll wake up with a brighter, clearer complexion each morning.
For even better results, supplement the cleanses with Liver Focus, which contains scientifically validated ingredients to accelerate your results. You can mix the supplement directly into water or take it alongside the cleanses. This powerful supplement helps to accelerate fat burning in the body, gives you brighter eyes and glowing skin and has a significant impact on liver health and weight loss.
DEEP CONDITION YOUR HAIR Just as you use a good moisturizer to help replenish and protect your skin every day, find hair conditioners or deep conditioning oils that can prevent your hair from drying out, frizzing or turning brittle. Look for products using natural ingredients, and that are designed for your hair type. HYDRATE WELL - FROM THE INSIDE OUT If you want hair and skin that aren’t overly dried out, it’s not enough to just condition or moisturize them from the outside. Staying well hydrated, by drinking at least eight glasses of water each day, will help your body maintain healthier, more beautiful skin and hair. You’ll also feel better, inside and out. Lastly, avoid drinking too many beverages that are dehydrating - like tea and coffee, soda and alcoholic drinks. DETOX WITH A GREEN SMOOTHIE CLEANSE AND APPLE CIDER VINEGAR CLEANSE Both cleanses developed by JJ Smith help to remove toxins from your system, resulting in brighter eyes, lusher hair and glowing, beautiful skin. The Green Smoothie Cleanse is a 10-day detox made up of green leafy veggies, fruit and water. Green smoothies are filling and healthy,
Visit JJSmithonline.com for your next steps. BOOST YOUR VITAMIN INTAKE Many vitamins help keep your skin, hair and nails healthy and beautiful: Vitamins A, B, Biotin (B7), C and K, plus fish oil. These vitamins are found in a variety of foods such as fruits and veggies (especially dark leafy greens), fish, nuts and seeds. To be sure you’re getting enough of all these vitamins, you can also take vitamin supplements. PROTECT YOUR SKIN AND HAIR FROM THE ELEMENTS If you spend time outdoors, especially doing winter sports, keep your skin and hair covered. Exposing them to harsh wind, cold temps and winter glare can be damaging. Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage - yes, even in the winter! Snow and ice reflect UV rays, making them even more damaging than being at the beach in the summer. Taking care of your health and your beauty are really one and the same. QSM: Tell us what piqued our interest for modeling. Shermine: I want give credit to my Sister/ friend and Hair Stylist Chekesha Simms. She asked me to be 1 of her models in a Hair and Fashion Show and this was my 1st runway experience. I got my 1st opportunity to be published in a magazine when she asked me to be the face of her hair brand business. She supported and encouraged me to pursue modeling on a different level. I always had a love for fashion and trends but once I got to experience being a part of it I knew this was something I was interested in doing. I started taking runway classes, auditioning for fashion shows and working with different photographers. Working in the model industry definitely has its ups and downs and will teach you to have tough skin. QSM: What do you do for a living? Shermine: When people ask me what I do for living I laugh then say I am a full time wife, mother of 3 and a Sr. Collection Financial Specialist... in that order!! QSM: What three stores and or designers
do you feel cater to the needs of the plus size woman best? Shermine: There are a lot of brands that now cater to plus size clothing and I have purchased a lot of different brands but Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewart and Eloquii are what mostly occupies my closet. QSM: In your opinion who are the five most influential people in our industry today? Shermine: Supermodel Liris Crosse always comes to mind; she is an icon and still a runway killer. I think Beyoncé is almost everyone’s favorite. She is Mom, business woman, singer, songwriter, dancer, model and I could go on and on... I mean she does it all! Then it’s Rihanna, singer, business woman, 2020 NAACP recipient, beauty and fashion influencer. Some of my favorite social media influencers are Gabifresh, Nikki Free, Flaws of Couture, Frankie Tavares and Janelle Langford. Check out these brand influencers: @Queenaysh with@ Powerhouse_plus and @Cystumofcurves they are representing for the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area right now! QSM: You have done a few runway shows; what would you like to see change during these shows? Shermine: This is always a conversation piece and most of us if not all say we would like to be compensated for the time we participate in these shows. They see us walk down the runway and think that was so easy but what they don’t see is the practicing, behind the scenes preparation and multiple changing to the next look is a lot of work. Most models travel from out of town to these shows and sometimes asked to sell tickets. Everyone from the DJ, host, model coaches, and signed models get some kind of compensation except the unsigned models. We show up and show out for these brands and I understand it’s a business and everyone’s working for a purpose. We do it for the experience and in hopes to get other offers for paid opportunities but if they could cover some percentage for our time, travel and/or hotel expenses would be great. QSM: Let’s talk a little bit about the Pretty Plush Brand and what make you create it. Shermine: In 2018, I saw this picture of a group of girls on social media. I sent it to my friend Quella and she texted me back and said let’s do something like this. She pulled over 20 girls together to create this shoot of plus size women displaying confidence and unity. That day she said MiMi stay tuned I got an idea and I need your help. So about a month later Pretty Plush came to Fruition. I am the Pretty Plush Stylist and a Model for the brand. My Pretty Plush Sister, Marquella Whiters wears the hat as CEO. QSM: Are these all models in your group or is it open to all? Shermine: Pretty Plush is the model division of the global confidence academy. We currently have 10 models. QSM: How does one join? Shermine: We have a Body Positive Event and Model Runway Workshop coming up soon and our future goals will be to continue to add more models to the brand so please be sure to follow @iamprettyplush on instagram for more info about our events. QSM: What is a sisterhood to you and what avenues do you take to build it?
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2020 ISSUE
Shermine: I don’t have siblings so having a sisterhood with these ladies feels good, we pray for each other and have that unconditional love and support for each other. My Pretty Plush sisters and I are all on a fitness and healthy lifestyle journey and these ladies have some amazing and motivating weight loss stories. Our connection is genuine and we push each other to win in health and wealth. We’re working full time jobs, taking care of home while running our own businesses or working on a business plan outside of the Pretty Plush brand. Surrounded by talent and we all bring something different to the Pretty Plush Table. We have so much Talent in our group which allows us to bring amazing and different ideas to the Pretty Plush Table. QSM: Let’s discuss this online clothing boutique; do you design or will these be resell pieces? Shermine: The online clothing boutique will be resell pieces offered to all sizes. Everyone please follow LUV4MIMIJ on instagram for upcoming boutique page details. Thank you to all that support and encourage me to push through and follow my dreams. QSM: And the custom jackets? Tell me more about those? Shermine: I started making jackets because I wanted something different you couldn’t get in the stores. Another reason I started making jackets was because all the jackets I wanted were really overpriced. So, I challenged myself and put my creative talents to work and designed some dope 1 of a kind pieces. We all need that Blinged out or statement piece in our closet. I can’t wait for y’all to see what I’m working on. There will be more custom jackets and statement pieces from Styles by MiMiJ coming soon. QSM: What is your ultimate goal here? When you look back over your life what would you hoped to have accomplished? Shermine: My goal is to continue to develop my brand and help others at the same time. It definitely takes a village and if we all work together we can grow, be successful, and change the industry. #GoalGetters

MY HAIR IS IN INTENSIVE CARE! by Nathaniel Jaye
I get so many emails from women all over the world telling me their hair needs major therapy. It’s either their hair is extremely dry, its sheading critically or their edges are thinning out. There really isn’t a solid answer simply because everyone’s hair situation is totally different. However, let’s start with hair dryness. There is a list of things that could be causing it. 1. A change in the weather; the winter months can be harsh on the hair and can dehydrate the hair severely. • For my natural girls skipping a shampoo and cowashing can help to maintain that moisture you need to combat the harsh winter. • Be sure you are keeping your hair wrapped up when going outside; be mindful that a cotton hat can and will dry your hair out. Try purchasing one of those silk lined hats; that are very stylish by the way! • Wrap your hair up Every night; even if it’s in a natural/ protective style. For both my relaxed and natural sisters “PUT DOWN THE FLAT IRON” I don’t know how hard I can stress this. Putting
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2020 ISSUE
a 450-degree flat iron to your tresses daily Is simply burning your hair away. This is what we call “HEAT DAMANGE” once the hair is damaged from the heat it will no longer hold a curl, moisture or a style. It will simply fall limp and it will need to be cut off to start over. For those that are not familiar with what heat damage is; if you shampoo your natural “kinky coily” hair and the ends are bone straight; that’s “heat damage” 2. •
•
Poor diet Adding healthy fats such as trout, salmon or avocado (just to name a few) which just so happens to be loaded with healthy omega-3 fatty acids; aids in shiny hair and it keeps the hair growing as it should. I would suggest in looking into a multi-vitamin to take daily. This is great to replace the nutrients that we are not getting from the “poor” foods you are eating daily. I always suggest to my clients to get yearly blood work done to make sure there aren’t any vitamin deficiencies.

3. Medication •
•
Many medications if not all have side effects that can result in hair being extremely dry in which the hair can start shedding and/ or thinning. Be sure to read up on all of your medications; and as always consult your physician about these concerns. A few Medications that can have an adverse effect on your hair; but not limited to are:
• **Beta blockers (blood pressure medications) **Hormone Therapy **Weight loss drugs **Anti-Thyroid drugs **Cholesterol controlling drugs **Birth control 4. Pregnancy • I have clients freak out and in complete panic after they notice their hair is seeming to be thinning greatly; especially around the hairline. At first I was lost as to what was going on until one of my clients who is a family Doctor informed me that women go through a major hormonal transition during and after pregnancy. So no, you’re not dying or going bald; your body is just trying to reset itself and during this process sometimes times the hair gets shorthanded. Continue to take your prenatal vitamins at least for the next 9 to 12 months during this adjustment period. As stated above consult your family doctor. 5. •
Chemicals (relaxers, color etc.) Relaxers and color is not for everyone and often times it’s a user error. Spacing out your relaxer appointments will breed positive results. In addition, always find the time to see your professional stylist more that every two months. Those inbetween visits coupled with proper deep conditionings will help your hair Tremendously. Moreover, let’s talk about color;
ITS NOT FOR EVERYONE!!! You have to ask yourself the question Are you going to be fully committed (financially & mentally) to this hair color journey. If the answer is no, then do your hair a favor and stay away from receiving any color services; it will thank you down the road. Color is a wonderful service to add to enhance a cut or your new look just be sure you take the proper precautions before doing so. If you have any questions, comments or concerns; feel free to reach out to me via Instagram (@Hairbynathaniel_Jaye) or www.nathanieljayehair.com And remember “Great hair doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by appointment” find you a hairstylist that is professional and takes pride in healthy hair.

The Fabulous Tawanda Monique is a model from a little town in North Carolina, called Erwin. She is the owner and CEO of “Monique’s School of Fashion and Modeling”, where she has trained and taught the fundamentals of becoming a great runway model and the history behind it. “I enjoyed John Casablanca’s Modeling School; they taught me everything that I know, but I felt that students could benefit from a school that provides more instructional model knowledge rather than a number. I have always wanted to encourage the models rather than break them down. The industry already has that covered.” While Tawanda wears a true plus size Supermodel frame at 5’ 9’’, 225lbs, she encourages and promotes models of all various shapes and sizes. Throughout Tawanda’s career she have been on several magazine covers, and have done countless runway shows, along with print and commercial photoshoots. In 2018 she appeared on the big screen in the movie “Feminine”, with producer and writer Talilah Breon in her hometown. “Models come in all sizes, but sometimes large models are discounted as video girls and pin ups, honestly, I do believe that women on average are larger than the typical runway models. Also, I believe that we display an accurate view of everyday models, their place in the industry, and the struggles that we go through to gain credibility for the work that we do.” “To whom is given, much is required, and that’s why I must use every bone in my body to show the world just what it means to be astonishing and remarkable. My devotion to community service is represented by the Autism Society of NC. ‘You are NOT your disability’ campaign designed to promote and help kids with disability understand that they are loved and capable to do anything that they put their mind to and can achieve.

QSM: Tawanda Monique…. How are you? Tawanda: I am great, just happy to be here. QSM: Chat with me for a bit about Monique’s School of Fashion and Modeling and the inspiration behind it. Tawanda: So, MSFM has been a dream of mine since I started my modeling career back in 2013. I attended John Casablanca Modeling Agency and got all the training I needed, after graduation I went back to teach runway. I then decided why not a business starts where I can be more interactive with my students that have a passion for modeling, rather than just a number! Modeling is not just a hobby, but a career for many and an inspiration that turns into a passion, that’s how I became inspired to start a school of fashion and modeling. QSM: Can you share some of the curriculum with us? What people will learn? How many days are classes and for how long? Tawanda: At Moniques School of Fashion and Modeling, we teach you, most of all, the history behind modeling and how it became. Like, Donyale Luna first African American supermodel to pose for VOGUE in 1966. We also teach them the fundamentals and basics of runway, posing classes, make up, etiquette and so much more. We instill in our models VALUES and GOALS. There is classroom curriculum and of course Runway. Models also learn how to slate on camera and how to audition for movie roles and short films as well.

QSM: Tell me what made you get into the modeling world and how long have you been doing it now. Tawanda: Honestly, I never wanted to be a model, haha!! I did a photoshoot when I turned 30, because I considered it to be a milestone. My cousin was the photographer and she was like, “Can I use you as a cover model for my magazine?”, and it’s been a roller coaster ever since. I started back in February of 2013.

QSM: This industry is saturated with men and women trying to break their way into modeling. What are three essential traits that a person should possess in order to be a successful model? Tawanda: Confidence (You have to believe in yourself and what you are offering to an agent or stage manager, let them know that if they choose you that they are not making a mistake, be BOLD!!) Poise (How you carry yourself. Hold your head high, determination, positive spirit, these are all examples of Poise) Headshots (You have to bring it, rather you are doing a show, or commercial. Sell yourself through your photo.) QSM: Tell us something about Tawanda that people can’t find in your bio or online. Tawanda: Well, most people do not know, but I love to write. I am in the process of writing a book about my life and how I became successful, a lot of the times, people look at the outward appearance and think it’s easy to accomplish the things that I have, but most don’t understand the story behind “Tawanda Monique” and what I had to go through to get me where I am. QSM: What do you do for fun? Tawanda: Most of my time is spent with my family, first of all, my pride and joy which is my son Omari , he was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 3 and he is now 15, he always tell me that “he is not his disability’, and nothing lifts my spirit more than to hear him say those things. Coping with life is hard for regular children and adults, so to hear him say that, makes me want to take this thing called LIFE head on. Whatever he likes to do for fun for that day, is what I like to do!!! Time with him is more than enough. QSM: Who are some of the other plus-size models that inspire you and why? Tawanda: Christina Mendez, is amazing. She encourages me that beauty has no barrier and that you can look good in a 2 piece bathing suit just like you are a size 8. Another model that inspired me in her lifetime was Mia Davis, she inspired me in a way that no one else could, her blogs told a story, and in one of her blogs she mentioned “The media doesn’t showcase overweight people. Overweight women are not seen in Hollywood?” It’s like why are we being targets, but we’re invisible everywhere else. QSM: What do you do for a living? Tawanda: I am employed with BB&T as a Branch Banker
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2020 ISSUE
full time. I also am a print and runway model part time, but most of all I am a MOM! QSM: Can you see yourself giving up your job and doing this full time? Tawanda: Absolutely! I love what I do and the impact that I can make in a person’s life. Every time, I feel like giving up, theirs always this one person that show up and be like, Wait?? Aren’t you Monique the Model?? Whether it’s at the gas station, restaurant or the gym. So, I feel like I have to keep pushing and set an example for the plus size industry that look up to me. Besides, I love teaching the basics and fundamentals of modeling! QSM: When you hear the term Queen Size, what does that mean to you? Tawanda: “A Queen”, just what it says. We often get the term mixed up, as if it’s bad to be queen size. Some people use the term fat, big, overweight or just large, but to me it’s so much more than that. I embrace ME and every curve that comes with ME. You have to love yourself from within, if you can’t find love in yourself, then how will you learn to love someone else. QSM: Tell me about the future Tawanda; where will she be and what will she be doing in five years? Tawanda: In 5 years.. WOW!! Well for starters I hope to be have made a mark in history with Monique’s School of Fashion and Modeling, because I am the only black female that owns a school out of 4 of the surrounding counties, not in the state yet. I hope to instill in these kids and adults, that they have the potential just have to push them a little so that they can achieve their goals. QSM: Where can people follow you Tawanda? Tawanda: You can follow me on Facebook: Tawanda Monique Instagram: Moniquethemodel Email: MSFM@gmail.com QSM: Any final thoughts before we close out this interview? Tawanda: Don’t take NO as your final answer, if it’s one thing that I learned in my career as an independent model, it was never stop at a NO. Sometimes in this career choice you will hear more NO’s then Yes’s, but that don’t stop your drive or your ambition to prove that you are what they are looking for, even though, they may not know it yet. Keep pushing, Keep striving and you will accomplish!!

Have you resolved to age naturally and gracefully or are you fighting it every step of the way? No matter what category you fall in there is something on the market for everyone. The good news is that cosmetic procedures are not like 10 years ago and people are wanting more natural Photoshop tweaks of themselves verses a complete reconstructive look. The lasted natural tweak procedures includes unorthodox uses for fillers such as for stretched earlobes from heavy earrings, and fillers for the lip cupid’s bow to appear more youthful. Also an
increase in body contouring, tricking the body to think it’s working out to get that smaller waistline. Men have also become more age and body conscious as there has been a rise in tweaks for them as well. Preventive procedures are on the rise. Women are having procedures by the age of 30 to give themselves a natural enhanced reboot. Queens and Kings, whatever fountain of youth you drink from, just be the best rate version of yourself because you are unique and amazing!

Late one Saturday evening I am screaming, “Sean hurry and get dress we’re going to be late to…!” Immediately my mouth is wide open. Sean comes rolling down to my disbelief he has on a pair of rip, torn jeans with a plain washout faint blue shirt and dusty brown boots in which we are to attend a friend’s engagement. How many women can contest that your man’s fashion never correlates with a proper function or just always wearing the same style in the different ways. The story of my life! Men fashion has grown tremendously over time from their loose cuts pants, to men’s’ accessories, to more colorful flattering outfit. Men’s fashion has gone from being bored to WOW, BAM, OMG type of gestures! When looking for men’s style one has to know what he will look good in and be more receptive of wearing. Men fashion is so easy to obtain when comparing decades ago. I’ve stated a few men’s styles of fashion for all men should have in case of an event to occur or come up so you both or he won’t be caught of guard. A stunning bomber jacket~ Fall is quickly approaching and seeing a man in a bomber jacket or flight jacket is such a signature look for the season. The bomber jacket has come a long way from being plain hunter green to more vibrant colors, designs, and fitted look. The bomber jacket comes in so many styles that it is a great look with simple or distress jeans. The bomber jacket is nice to have to when attending a simple, casual function. A taste of color~ The “today’s men” has lost the stigma of wearing colors. All men should have something of color in their closet. Color is what makes a simple top go from boring to eye staring. Yes, the list of colors is long, but a man should have a color polo top that matches the season. The fall season is a great time to splurge into mustard yellow, mocha brown and pumpkin orange that are warm, but still have a spark of color. Men should never want to gear away from colors, because it is what gives the styles that look and spice to a man’s wear. Photo by Marcelo Chagas from Pexels
A stylish slack~ A man wardrobe should consist of a navy and or black slacks. In some cases may call it trousers. The moment will arise where they are needed and there is no time to get a pair in a timely manner. That pair of slack can come in handy when attending a function of a friend’s house warming, dinner with your wife or girl, and or a simply outing that will require more than jeans. Just note, we were late to our friend’s engagement, but Sean look much cleaner attending the event. Moral of this story make sure you communicate to your significant other whose has no fashion sense and prepare him for the “type” of event!

6 TIPS FOR AVOIDING EMOTIONAL SPENDING

AVOID EMOTIONAL SPENDING | STATEPOINT
Decisions about spending money are often driven by emotions, even if what your heart is telling you goes against logic. Emotional financial choices may provide you with short-term happiness, but they are just as likely to result in long-term regret or debt. Here are six tips for making spending decisions, without allowing your emotions to take over. • Get an accurate picture of what it costs to maintain your lifestyle and fund your goals. Knowing your fixed and variable expenses and being able to quantify your goals in terms of dollars and timeframes will help you understand what you can afford to spend in the near term. • Ask yourself if you want something or need something before you buy it. If you do need it, or if it will make a huge difference in your life and you can pay for it right away without touching funds that are earmarked for other important goals, then go for it. • Pause and think twice before buying large items. When making major purchases (for example, over $500), take some time between deciding to buy and making the actual purchase. Prioritize your expenditures by categorizing them in terms of cost and effect. For example, you should pay your health insurance and car insurance before booking a short-term vacation. • Make a list before shopping. Whether shopping for groceries, household items or gifts, creating a list -- and sticking to it -- will help you avoid impulse buys and save money. • Shop for major holidays throughout the year. Set a budget for annual gifts early in the year and take the time to comparison shop to find the best prices and take advantage of discounts when you find them. This not only helps to spread out giving expenses, it also ensures you do not pay a premium for last-minute purchases. • Experts say financially savvy people know their emotional triggers for spending, and are able to rein them in when necessary. Unfortunately, this is not easy for everyone. However, working with a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional to manage your spending can help you stay focused on achieving your longterm financial goals. To find a CFP professional near you who can help you look at your life through a financial lens and avoid the cost of emotionally driven decisions, visit www.letsmakeaplan.org. Remember that your financial priorities should almost always be focused on your long-term goals. A bit of planning and some outside help can go a long way toward better spending decisions. this article saw sponsored by STATEPOINT

5 Simple ways to bring more color to your home
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH APRIL 2020 2019 ISSUE ISSUE
BRING MORE COLOR TO YOUR HOME| BRANDPOINT When you look at your home’s interiors, do you find yourself craving a refresh? If so, there’s no better time than the New Year to update your home with thoughtful design touches that embrace the power of color. Color is a key component of interior design and a useful tool for updating any space. What’s more, colors can convey many emotions - from calm to energetic - helping you create rooms that are perfectly reflective of your personal tastes. Even though the possibilities are endless, color can be intimidating. While you may like the use of color when you see it online, in magazines or other people’s homes, the uncertainty about how to incorporate it into your own home may hold you back. Fortunately, a few simple expert tips and tricks will have you using color like a pro in no time. Lifestyle expert and EasyCare Paint Brand Ambassador Camille Styles knows the power of color in transforming spaces from bland to beautiful. She uses color throughout her home to create rooms that are stylish and unique and you too can transform your favorite spaces by using her top tips to bring color into your home: Paint an accent wall: An accent wall commands attention and creates depth in the space, becoming the focal point of the room. The color you choose can be any hue that’s different from the other walls in the room. Whether it’s slightly different or drastically different is up to you. “I’m really into EasyCare Paint’s French Coast color,” says Styles. “Its strong blue hue makes a bold statement without being too harsh or overpowering.” Add a rug: Transform a room in an instant with a vibrant rug. It will add the perfect touch of color and can even be changed out seasonally to bring new hues into the space. A rug with a bright color or pattern can help create the illusion of more space so don’t be afraid to use one in a smaller room to open it up and make it more inviting. Start small: Many people are timid about color, so you can start small and incorporate a new, bold tone with items like a coffee table accessory or oversized pillows. You may find that your choice quickly becomes a favorite piece in your home, plus you’ll gain the confidence to add more color to other rooms, too. Introduce textures: Bringing in different colors and textures, such as a plush throw blanket or a woven basket, takes your space up a notch and adds another visual layer. Since these aren’t permanent fixtures in the room, they offer an easy way to play around with colors to see what works best in the space. Embrace the unexpected: Bring in a bold pop of color by doing something unexpected, like painting the trim instead of the wall. “Black can take a room up a notch with its rich tone. “EasyCare Paint’s Crow color will really wow your guests whenever you entertain,” says Styles. Whether you’re looking to do a quick update or a complete interior design overhaul, color makes a room more dynamic and energized. From simple décor pieces to bolder accent walls, bringing color into your home is a great way to refresh in the New Year. WAKE UP REFRESHED Simple ways to begin your morning
Ready, set, go. Just as you would set off at the starting line of a race, this hectic pace is how mornings begin for many men and women. Instead of waking with dread to face another hectic morning, consider these tips for a healthier way to ease into your daily rituals. While these activities may require you to allow extra time, you may be pleased with the productive results. Meditate. A practice that has been around for thousands of years may still be one of the best stress busters for hurried mornings. To start, find a place in your home that is free of noise and

distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stress-inducing thoughts. Stretch. While the most health-conscious person may opt for a morning sweat-a-thon, working in some stretches can also be beneficial. When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds. Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead.
