FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the April 2021 issue of Queen Size Magazine. This issue is all about Living in Color. We are seeing the fashion world starting to “pick back up the pace” these days. Not that it ever stopped, but many of us have been cooped up in the house lounging in our favorite pajamas and loungewear for months on end. If you look on social media you will find that we are pretty tired of just looking “relaxed”. We are seeing major changes being made by designers, boutiques and models. Changes that have awaken a lot of our creative spirits. It’s time to bring fashion back in a big way. Time to brighten things back up and what better way to do that by incorporating bold colors into our lives. So this issue is for all of the creatives. This issue is also for those that don’t feel so motivated. It’s time to LIVE IN COLOR!!!! If I can venture into the world of COLORS, then anyone can. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well. Stay safe readers.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I AM BACK! Did you miss me? Because I truly missed You. I SAY YES!

Colors for Spring and Summer of 2021

By Crystal D. Lewis

So let’s begin, let’s talk about the colors for spring and summer of 2021. Whether it’s for hair, makeup, and or fashion, I am into it all. I did my research and found the colors for this year are your grays (all shades) from light to dark to your illuminating yellows, and all in between. And I love it! This way if you are not into your cool colors and into your warm colors you are still in style. This excites me! I SAY YES! This allows for all my conservative clients to be my dare devil clients and get a little change. Whether you eventually want to stay in control with your hair color or not. You’re able to stay your natural color with a cool tone (like a cool black with blue hues) or be a brassy yellow to your pale yellow. It totally depends on your lifestyle. Especially through this pandemic. Now if you want to be daring you can try your wonderful lavender color or REDS. I am so glad REDS are back with a vengeance. You can be a cool vibrant red to your warm copper REDS. 2021 is a year of renewal—so why not start off 2021 with a fresh new hair color? You might be tired of your same hair color and want to try a new color. And there’s no shortage of cool hair color trends to try right now. While 2020’s biggest color trends were all about natural, super-low-maintenance color—like undone blonde and cinnamon brown —-experts predict 2021 is going to be all about having fun as life starts to return back to normal—somewhat. Instead of bright pink, try lavender, which is a popular fashion and hair color for 2021. If WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2021 ISSUE

not, there are plenty of unexpected takes on your classic shades that are trending as well. Why ask for basic highlights when you can order up silver champagne? Silver champagne is a cool beige color. The best hair color trends to try right now is from vintage blonde, to bright blue, to cooper reds. Embracing your grays over this last year has a lot of women and men becoming comfortable with their natural look. A lot of people made the decision to let their grays grow in during the time the salons were closed for months during the lockdown due to the pandemic. This gave people a chance to embrace their silver-gray hair and to see the possibilities of their natural highlights. For some people, gray hair can be a total lifestyle change. If you do not want to embrace your gray hair, consult with your licensed stylist before you decide to change your hair color. The licensed stylist should take your lifestyle into consideration. Anyone using color must be a licensed professional cosmetologist. Have fun embracing your natural color or trying a new color. Take care of your body also. That promotes healthy hair. Take your vitamins! Drink plenty of water! I SAY YES! Crystal D. Lewis, President/Owner of I Say Yes Salon and Spa, LLC. Crystal is a Hair and Beauty Expert, Educator, and Philanthropist. 4 TIPS FOR RESTORING SENSITIVE, IRRITATED, DRY SKIN

Beautiful, healthy-looking skin is a reflection of overall good health. But it’s not just a question of how your skin looks - how it feels is just as important. If your skin is sensitive, you may experience symptoms that make you feel uncomfortable.

• You have broken capillaries on your face

How do you know if you have sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is typically caused by a compromised skin moisture barrier, allowing for increased water loss and faster absorption of irritants and allergens that come in contact with your skin. Psychological and emotional factors can also contribute to skin sensitivity, as well as environmental conditions.

• Your skin flushes or turns red easily • You have itchiness or dryness • Beauty products or fragrances irritate your skin • You’re sensitive to sun or wind WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2021 ISSUE

Because your skin is affected by your internal health and your external environment, there are many potential causes for skin sensitivity and many possible treatments.

4 TIPS FOR RESTORING SENSITIVE, IRRITATED, DRY SKIN | BRANDPOINT

Whether your sensitive skin is on your face, body or both, it helps to identify common triggers. Everyday sensitive skin triggers While some people are genetically predisposed to sensitive skin, others can be sensitized by their environment and lifestyle. Some factors that may trigger sensitive skin reactions include temperature or humidity changes, pollution or smoking, plus use of soaps, household or cosmetic products - especially those containing high concentration of fragrances. Other potential triggers include medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation, or factors like emotional stress or lack of sleep. The good news is, there are steps you can take in your everyday life to safeguard your skin against possible triggers. Create restorative spaces We’ve been spending a lot more time at home, so it’s worth evaluating your living space. Making small changes can create a more restorative environment to improve your overall well-being, including the health of your skin. Humans are attracted to nature for a reason. Being in or around nature offers restorative benefits to your physical and emotional wellbeing. Here are four tips for bringing positive, natural elements into your environment and daily routine. 1. GROW PLANTS.

from naturally derived ingredients - like oat formulated to nourish, calm and restore skin so it looks and feels healthier. Oats have been used in skincare since ancient times for their ability to soothe and nourish skin, because they help: • Replenish and hydrate the moisture barrier • Restore skin’s pH • Soothe sensitive, dry skin Both of the company’s new collections are formulated without fragrance, parabens and phthalates. For the body: The Aveeno Restorative Skin Therapy line is a dermatologist-tested body care regimen clinically proven to be well-tolerated and effective on distressed, sensitive skin. Their Restorative Skin Therapy Oat Repairing Cream is formulated with a rich complex of aloe, pro-vitamin B5 and the brand’s highest concentration of prebiotic oat, and is clinically proven to intensely moisturize over time to improve skin’s resilience. For the face: The Aveeno Calm + Restore facial care collection is formulated with soothing oat and calming feverfew to calm irritated, dry skin. The line includes a Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer for daily use. It hydrates to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier over time. 3. GET CHOOSY ABOUT FABRICS. Select clothing and linens - including face masks - made from gentle, natural materials (like cotton or bamboo).

Bring more plants into your home, as they can improve indoor air quality by absorbing toxins and increasing moisture levels - which helps nourish dry, sensitive skin.

4. AMP UP YOUR LIGHTING.

2. STOCK UP ON GENTLE SKINCARE.

For National Healthy Skin Month this year, find new ways to improve your skin’s health and appearance. Visit Aveeno.com to find the right products for the health of your skin.

Use products specially created for sensitive skin. For example, Aveeno offers gentle cleansing and moisturizing products made

Increase natural lighting to boost vitamin D intake.

IN LIVING COLOR by Ashley Walker Imagine our bodies as a blank canvas, fashion is our palette and we are the artist. The way we use color in fashion can be fun, exciting and liberating. The freer we are to wear colors, the more we get to know ourselves and our boundaries. The way we are with our fashion tells a lot about who we are, and it is the best way to express ourselves without restriction. Even when we wear all black, the color is intentional and always attached to a bigger ideal. Color in fashion allows us to be uniquely ourselves and to shine through our own authenticity. Color is actually a type of power that can influence us without our knowledge. It is okay for us to color-block, we can wear the same color on top as on the bottom, pops of color at random are perfect, and mixed patterns with colors are lovely. Our ideas for fashion are the ways we see ourselves from the inside out, and color puts the finishing touches on it all. Take in all of the color in this life and go out and live it like its golden!!! What do you think of these colors and prints??!!

FINDING CONFIDENCE IN QUARANTINE: SURVEY SHOWS HOW COVID-19 INFLUENCES MAKEUP USAGE

As being in quarantine and weathering the COVID-19 pandemic continues to put a damper on things, American women are turning to their makeup routines to feel a sense of control and comfort, according to new research. In September, marketing firm OnePoll asked 2,000 American women about how they’re staying positive and confident as their time in quarantine and social distancing drags on. According to the findings, 51% said wearing makeup and changing up their looks turned out to be a small way to help them escape the stress of current affairs. Going for natural beauty: Since the onset of the pandemic, we’ve seen a palpable shift in mood to a more low-key, understated aesthetic. After all, when video meetings and intimate (but open-air) gatherings continue to define our interactions, we may be less focused on going for glam and more on dressing for warmth and casual comfort. For that reason, respondents identified a rise in more natural makeup looks as a key trend of 2021.

FINDING CONFIDENCE IN QUARANTINE | BRANDPOINT

Leveraging makeup with benefits: A flawless look always starts with healthylooking radiant skin, no matter how much we’re social distancing. And that’s why for a majority of respondents (60%), products that multi-task get top billing. For example, products that contain vitamin E in the ingredients or improve the skin’s appearance, such as skin smoothing or eliminating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are always a win, quarantine or not. To help you achieve that naturally beautiful look you’re after, try Neutrogena Makeup - it’s “makeup fueled by skincare,” and delivers lasting makeup benefits, packed with skin healthy ingredients. The eyes have it: For now, going out means masking up, whether we’re hanging out with friends (while social distancing), eating at a restaurant outdoors, running errands or going on a social-distancing compliant date. Not surprisingly, nearly half of respondents (48%) admit that face masks have transformed their makeup routine. That means the eyes are now pulling focus. (Raise your hand if you’ve attempted smiling with your eyes, or “smizing.”) Sixty percent say they want their eyes to be a standout feature while wearing a face covering. In 2021, watch for the rise of dramatic eye makeup to give the peepers some serious pop. Ready for your screening: Being in quarantine and staying home doesn’t necessarily mean makeup falls by the wayside. When it’s time to make an appearance, say, right before a video meeting, many found a reason to pick up their makeup looks. During our time in, mascara, eyeliner and foundation were the top three products respondents

found they couldn’t live without especially when they were due for a video call for class or work. Getting a mood boost: Being in quarantine and missing out on the things we love doing most can be a downer. While nearly half of respondents (49%) admit to ditching their normal makeup routine, just over a third (36%) say that wearing at least some makeup actually gives their mood a lift. One in four (24%) have gone as far as trying new cosmetics, while just over half (51%) say that using makeup to change up their appearance - perhaps to compensate for the face-covering - lets them feel a sense of control and comfort during a stressful time. During quarantine, making small changes has the power to give you a sense of control and boost your mood. For inspiration, visit neutrogena.com This online survey of 2,000 American women was commissioned by Neutrogena and conducted by market research company OnePoll, in accordance with the Market Research Society’s code of conduct. Data was collected in Sept. 2020. All participants are paid an amount depending on the length and complexity of the survey. This survey was overseen and edited by the OnePoll research team, who are members of the MRS and have corporate membership to ESOMAR and AAPOR.

NATHANIEL JAYE’ BEAUTY | QSM

QSM: Tell me about life growing up for you. Nathaniel: Growing up for me was different. I was a very curious child; always seeking to know more. My siblings were much older than I, so it was just me in the home. Giving that I was such an odd ball compared to the children my age usually kept to myself. I found comfort in music, the arts, especially hair and fashion magazines. I did not know it then; but one day my talents would be showcased in those very magazines. God has a funny way of shaping you and molding you into the person he needs you to be. I did not have much support from family so being a self-cheerleader was all I knew; still to this day I don’t know where I get my courage from. But I am so thankful that I took changes to do the impossible.

35

QSM: Where did the idea of becoming a hair stylist come from? Is that what you always wanted to be growing up? Nathaniel: You know as a child we are asked the question of what we want to be when we grow up. And my generalized response was a Doctor lol. Lord knows I lost that desire after I found out all the levels it took to be a doctor. However, when I would go to the salon with my mother I was so enamored watching the ladies do hair. The obsession grew more and more until I had an Aunt, whom was a hairstylist years ago, put the idea of going to hair school in my head. I had no idea that was a thing; I never saw any men doing hair and many did not see it being a lucrative profession, let alone a popular one. So I went against the grain and made my mind up that I was going to be a GREAT hairstylist. And that’s where the journey began.

QSM: Nathaniel, you have such a beautiful spirit. I was immediately drawn to you from the first time I saw you smile. I Imagine it’s like that for everyone when they meet you; is it?

QSM: What are your consultations like with women who come into the salon and have no idea what they are looking for? In other words, people like me lol.

Nathaniel: You know it’s so funny that you say that because for many years I tried to dumb myself down to make others feel comfortable. It was not until I was reading “I know why the caged bird sings” by Maya Angelou, for the fourth time, that I realized being bold means being brave and being brave means being your authentic self. So the Beautiful spirt you speak of is just that, my authenticity. It’s a rare characteristic that we don’t see anymore. So many people striving to be like the person on Instagram or Facebook. My goal is to meet people with the energy I expect to receive. Plant positive seeds, and you shall reap a positive harvest.

Nathaniel: A consultation with me is many things. My goal is to break the ice and begin the connection with the client. Get to know who they are and dive into what their hair needs are. As you stated, many women have no clue what they want, or they lack the confidence to step out the box and do something different. It is so easy to become a creature of habit; and finding a good hairstylist is the first step to helping you break that habit. It is time for women to see themselves as more than just mother or a housewife or talentless Anjanae. You can be that mother, wife and the CEO; but do it with STYLE.

QSM: What are your thoughts on perms? Nathaniel: Perms? Maybe you meant Relaxers LOL I love picking on people about that. The two are really different and they do two different things. Perms make straight hair curly, whereas relaxers remove curl. For example: A Jeri Curl is a form of a perm, where Motions is a relaxer. However, as hairstylist I love options and I love providing options for my clients. Relaxers provide a sense of freedom for the woman who doesn’t have the time to fuss with their hair; or they might just desire a smoother look. In addition, I too love natural hair; I have seen so many clients hair flourish once they have transitioned. Being that Relaxers are a chemical they tend to affect some women’s scalps and/or their hair is just too fragile and can’t handle the process. So all in all I support them both and I try to stay educated on both. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|APRIL 2021 ISSUE

QSM: MINDBLOWN on the perm. LOL. All these years my ignorant behind had it all wrong. Moving right along…. Lol… Tell me about the first time you had a customer look in the mirror and cry happy tears. Nathaniel: The first time that happened to me I thought OMG she hates it; but she looked at me and said thank you for making me look like myself again. We have no clue what our clients are dealing with; and sometimes just coming to the salon or a day of grooming can the very thing that stops them from having a nervous breakdown. We are so much more than a bump and curl artist; but we are really therapists. That’s why I always tell new hairstylist to make sure they are fueled by passion and not just monetary rewards.

QSM: I know many people have asked you about whether or not you would consider modeling in the big and tall fashion industry; when are you going to say yes? Nathaniel: I am not saying yes or no! I think I am waiting for the right moment, the right designer and the perfect platform. We can’t get on a stage and look like anything; we HAVE to deliver and own that stage. However, I would love to share the stage with my fellow big and tall brothers. QSM: Speaking of the big and tall industry, what do you think is missing? Nathaniel: Exposure and consistency! It seemed for a while the wave of support was huge; and now it has died down. I am sure the pandemic did not help but I need to see that drive I was seeing a couple years ago. I want to see the models out here demanding these labels start expanding their sizes and giving us a variety of style. I love fashion and I love looking good; but nothing frustrates more than not have options. I also want to see big and tall models utilizing social media more with this agenda; especially since we are not having fashion shows, and will not for a while. We must not rest until being plus sized is normalized among the fashion world. QSM: Anyone who follows you on social media knows that education is important to you. You are already an amazing hairstylist so why did you go back to school? Nathaniel: This hair industry is full of so much to learn and I was seeking to expand my brand by taking a stab at Film and Television. In addition, I have also broadened my makeup skills and truly taken my wig making abilities to another level. For example creating custom wigs for the everyday woman is so different from a custom wig for theater or film. All the nuances about this specialty work is not on google or in a cosmetology book. So I had to expand my network in order to increase my net worth. QSM: Giving back is also very important to you. You have been spotted at many of the plus industry events volunteering as a

hairstylist for the productions? Can you share why this is important to you and your brand? Nathaniel: For one I just LOVE all my plus size sisters and brothers so sharing that space with them Is huge for me. And anytime I can help increase the confidence of a plus size woman through styling I am always going to be there. This is what my brand is all about, tapping into that inner celebrity no matter your size, race or sexual orientation. Moreover, I have made some amazing connections in the plus size industry such as Gwen DeVoe, Maui Bigelow, Liris Crosse and the infamous Queen Size Magazine. QSM: What is your overall goal for your Nathaniel Jaye Hair brand? Nathaniel: I want to create a name for myself that is legendary; I don’t have to be in the spotlight, but I want my brand to be recognized for tenacity and the passion I have to maintain and raise the level of quality for the beauty industry. And maybe one day I can be a mentor for the next generation of hairstylist. QSM: Are you single and on the market? You know the people want to know. Lol Nathaniel: LOL Do they?? They must be shy because I am VERY single!!! I can’t say I am looking but if someone of “substance” comes along I might give them the opportunity……the door is open :). QSM: Nathaniel, we thank you so much for all you do in our industry and for people as a whole. May you be blessed tenfold. Nathaniel: Thank you so much for this AMAZING opportunity I am forever grateful for what all you guys have done for me and the plus size industry. QSM: The pleasure is always ours. use proper etiquette during commercials. And also provide makeup tips”. She was so excited being one of few young ladies chosen for the opportunity. Every weekend she would pack her bags, board the bus and head off class. For 6-8 hours, she would sit in class and soak up everything they were teaching so she can be prepared for her modeling career. Unfortunately, money got tighter with a new addition to her family, so sadly she had to give up on her dreams. She no longer had the means to pursue her passion. Needless to say, the feeling of coming so far to then have to give it up was a huge disappointment.

Tinesha Halmon, professionally known as NeshaRaye has been working as an aspiring fashion model for the past five years. NeshaRaye loves being in front of the camera and has a huge passion for editorial and high fashion. She has a creative mind and an energetic personality. Traits that she says gotten her this far in her modeling career. NeshaRaye’s passion for becoming a model began at a very young age. Like most girls, when she was a child she would play dress up in her mother’s clothing, makeup and heels. Her aunts noticed her passion and would take her to auditions for pageant and child modeling. When NeshaRaye was a sophomore in high school, she recalled seeing flyers posted around school for auditions being held at the Hilton Hotel for Barbizon models. She thought to herself “this is my opportunity; this is my chance. This school would teach me the proper way to model, how to speak and

With modeling completely out of her mind, NeshaRaye needed something to fill that void so she auditioned to become a pompom girl for her high school football team. She was chosen and continued with it for two years. But she never gave up on he dreams of becoming a model. In her senior year of high school she got a job and began saving up enough money (or what she thought was enough money) to begin (again) pursuing her modeling dreams. But she was determined to never give up again. After graduating high school, NeshaRay went straight to college and jumped headfirst back into the modeling industry. She began studying by watching fashion shows, researching and reaching out to people for advice. She practiced her runway walk and began building her comp card and attending model calls. After years of not getting call backs, NeshaRaye felt stuck. In 2016 she began doing photoshoots and working with some industry professional. To date, NeshaRaye has had the opportunity to work with individuals who has helped provide her with advice and the knowledge she needed to succeed. With all of her hard work and a special thanks to “The Dream Team” (Zakiyah Caldwell, Corrinn Chishimba, and Catherine Ashly) as we all know them by, NeshaRaye can official call herself a published model.

FUN TIMES WITH ZOOM by Dr. Janelle “The Curvy Doc” Simmons

FUN TIMES WITH ZOOM | DR. JANELLE “THE CURVY DOC” SIMMONS

We’ve been in quarantine for close to a year now, and many of us I’m sure are probably suffering from “Zoom fatigue”. There’s light at the end of the tunnel with the COVID vaccine, and people FINALLY following CDC guidelines. However, until then, attending a Zoom event doesn’t need to be a dreadful experience. Here are ten fun ways to safely connect with others using the world’s most popular virtual meeting platform: WINE TASTING: Have wine, cheese, chocolate (did I say CHOCOLATE?) shipped to your home, while being taught by a sommelier the process of pouring, tasting, and pairing wine. What’s great about this is everyone is safe, and no one needs to worry about having a designated driver. PAINT PARTY: Order a kit with the painting and art supplies and with or without an instructor create your masterpiece. SCAVENGER HUNT: This game is designed to get participants moving around, looking for various items around the house. For example, imagine having five minutes to find something you would take to the beach, or a picture of a keepsake from the 90’s. COOKING CLASS: Self-explanatory, a chef teaches attendees how to prepare delicious meals, providing a list of ingredients ahead of time. Some instructors may ship the ingredients to you, saving a trip to the grocery store.

SPEED DATING: A safe way to meet someone new. How can this be done on Zoom, you ask? By using the breakout room feature, the meeting host can split attendees into as many as fifty separate sessions, and randomly switch individuals after a certain amount of time. MOVIE NIGHT: Using Zoom’s shared screen feature, the host can stream a movie from Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc. and not worry about disturbing others or having to walk through seats of people to go to the concession stand or the bathroom. KARAOKE: Find a song on YouTube with the lyrics, then share your screen and the sound. If the person sounds bad, they can be easily muted. PICTIONARY: Again, using the shared screen feature, players draw a word, and their team must guess the word. MURDER MYSTERY GAME: Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery? Being led by a “detective”, teams use breakout rooms to swap clues and unravel the case together. BETTING GAME: I am not condemning or condoning gambling, but Zoom’s polling feature is great for voting on a series of questions, especially during a sporting event. Now go “out” and have some fun! Did I miss anything? Let The Curvy Doc know by dropping me a note at info@janellesimmons.com.

MAINTAINING A SENSE OF NORMALCY WHILE ROUTINES STAY DISRUPTED

MAINTAINING NORMALCY.....| STATEPOINT

With the roll-out of the vaccine taking place slowly, it may be awhile longer before life returns completely to normal. However, if you have been working remotely, it may be a good idea to reincorporate some of the elements of your regular routine into your schedule now. Not only will maintaining a sense of normalcy help you to feel more productive and more like yourself again, it could also help make the transition to the workplace smoother when it does occur. Here are a few ways to go about it: • Rise and shine: Have you let your morning schedule slide into chaos during the pandemic? Now is the time to get back to your regular hours. Get to sleep each week night at your pre-pandemic bedtime and set your alarm for your regular wake hour. With no commute, you may find yourself with some extra time in the morning. Use it to get organized for the day, exercise or check items off your to-do list. • Get dressed: Dress as though you are heading into the workplace. Wear pants that don’t have an elastic waistband, do your hair and wear accessories. Regain your sense of style and feel good about how you look.

51

it’s easy to feel like the workday has no clear beginning or end. For better work-life balance, try to structure your day as you once did, setting regular business hours. Be sure to include breaks so you don’t experience burnout. And, if your weekdays once included time for socializing with colleagues, make time for it now. Set up a virtual coffee meeting, lunch or happy hour. • Use tech tools: Stay accountable to your new schedule as well as your fashion goals with wearable tech, such as the Casio Edifice Watch. With full-time Smartphone Link technology, this timepiece enables you to stay up-to-date and on time. When paired to a compatible smartphone via Bluetooth, you can access the correct time in your current location and for up to 300 cities worldwide, as well as your calendar, receiving notifications for tasks, meetings and events. Featuring five alarms, a stopwatch, countdown timer and a two-year battery life, this water-resistant timepiece can be a highly functional tool as you transition back to a regular schedule. If working from home long-term has you feeling sluggish and unproductive, get back to your regular schedule. Maintaining a sense of normalcy can help get you out of the rut.

• Structure your day: When working remotely,
