Note from the Editor Welcome to the August 2015 issue of Queen Size Magazine. I can’t believe I am saying this but it is Summer Time; time to officially pull out open toe sandals and sundresses. I am not a fan of the heat but I do love my sundresses. As with the blooming flowers, the plus size industry is blooming as well. I am enjoying watching models, photographers, designers and such work more closely together to accomplish mutual goals. We along with everyone else are beginning to understand that there really is a market for Plus Size. Any moment I get to offer solid advice to models trying to make their way into this industry, I take advantage of that. It is extremely important for us to mentor aspiring models vs ignoring them. WE will either make or break this industry that WE are trying to collectively build. So here is a bit of advice for all of us: Instead of being competitive and trying to dominate the top, let’s continue to work together. Ask yourself this; what industry do you know that consists of ONE person?

QUEEN SIZE MAGAZINE PRESENTS

“To Answer Your Question” By SHIRLEY BEALE

SHE WAS A MAN. IS HE GAY?

BLACKMAILING FRIEND

Question: Shirley, I am in a solid relationship for 5 years now. My girl has a strange interest with the Bruce Jenner case where he had a sex change operation. We watched the special and had discussions about it. She said she knew of someone who did the same thing but their husband didn’t know and how would I react if it was us. I gave her my side and thought it was over. I came home one night when she said let’s talk. She said she had the same surgery and that her secret was too much to hold anymore. I snapped!!! I have been staying in the basement to figure this out. We clicked from the git. We have fun, we laugh, travel, and hang out. Dudes always trying to Holla at her. She takes real good care of me in ALL ways but now she’s a man. We are both close to 60. This is messed up. I am not gay but if I don’t go, does that mean I am?

Question: Hello Shirley. I’ve had a “friend” for some time now. We use to get along very good and had good times together. Then something happened to cause me to take a closer look at this so-called friendship. I’ve realized that she is nothing like what I thought. She is very conniving and not trustworthy. I tried to end the friendship but she is not accepting it. She is threatening me with something that is personal but not unlawful. Something I shared in confidence. This relationship has become a problem. What should I do? Signed Really Regretful

SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: If you have been with her for 5 years and you had no clue, she obviously has had great work done. If your relationship is solid as you say, the two of you travel, have fun, laugh and you love her; then continue as you were before the news. Have a conversation that there will be no more secrets. If she was female when you met her, then what happened in the past should stay in the past. She obviously makes you happy so concentrate on that. Staying with her does not make you gay; where gay or heterosexual, people are people. Delete labels! Talk with her and seek counselling to deal with this. The goal is to be happy, not defined by a surgery or a label.

COMMON SENSE VS. EMOTION Question: How do you know when you are making the right decision based on common sense vs. Emotion? Curious. SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Hello Curious. What works for me is surrounding myself around positive people who make sound decisions. There comes a time when many will be affected by something so deep that you feel like you are being consumed. Prayer, a solid family or friend circle to stay encouraged and remembering what a blessing you are, have been and will continue to be to yourself and many who depend on you, look up to you or are encouraged by you.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|AUGUST 2015 ISSUE

SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Hello Really Regretful. I truly understand your situation. If your “friend” is threatening to expose something you shared in confidence to remain in your life, I say let them. Holding something over someone’s head to remain in their life is crazy. This person has stooped to a sad level of Pathetic. You cannot allow this person to control you with information or anything else. Whomever she is threatening to tell may not care about this information after all. I know of a situation similar to this and it is truly a sad one. Using sympathy or guilt to remain in someone’s life is unhealthy. My suggestion is to never let ANYONE dictate your happiness. Life is short and very precious. You need to cut this person loose IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!! If you can’t do it on your own, you may need to enlist the services of some professionals, either legal, spiritual or BOTH. Another suggestion would be to get some family members that aren’t afraid to “handle” the situation for you but since I don’t advocate violence, go with the professional/spiritual help. Lastly, the next time you need to share some personal information, if you don’t have anyone you can trust, write or call me. If I can’t solve your problem, I’ll at least give you something to laugh about. Laughter is good for the Soul. Take care.

MARRIED TO MY HUSBAND, NOT HIS FAMILY!!! Question: I’ve been married to a great guy for years. He is a blessing and one of a kind. It’s hard to believe that he is related to the group of crazies he calls family, starting from the siblings on down. We live a comfortable life because of hard work which his family has no concept. They hang out,

party, no one seems to have goals and they are always begging. When they come over, they intentionally stay late so he can invite them to sleep over. They borrow money and NEVER pay it back, yet he still dishes it out. He loves the people and I’m sick of it. He is a great man but when it comes to them, he has no boundaries. Where is it written that a person has to deal with their spouse’s jacked up family? We don’t have this problem from my side of the family. Ultimate level of PISSIVITY. SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Well Mrs. Pissed Off, you may not want to read my reply but here it is. First of all, it is a blessing to have what you describe as a “Great Guy”. You two are financially comfortable and seem to have it together. Since your Great Guy Husband loves what you describe as “these people” then you need to find a way to work with him in dealing with them. Obviously they feel you all can afford to help them because they keep coming back and you keep giving. Trying to turn your husband against his family or cut them off is asking for problems within your household. If you can’t afford to continue to help them, SHOW him why, don’t tell him. As irritating as you say they are, he loves them. Do not put a burden on your husband of having to choose between his family and you. You may not like the outcome. Your husband seems like a very kindhearted man; don’t try and change him. Talk to him about your concerns and find a way to resolve it. You may not have this problem with your family because they may not like you. (Just kidding) but your husband’s kindheartedness may be one of the reasons you love him so. When you talk to him about it, do it with love, compassion and understanding. But whatever you do, do not bash or talk about his family because he loves them. Don’t describe them as “jacked up” because that can get back to them. Remember how much you love your man and try and come to understand that the benefits you get from loving your great man is worth the small inconvenience of having family members around that DONT measure up to what you feel they should. Lighten up on your husband’s family. As you said already, he loves them. Dealing with them is a small price to pay for the reward of having a great man. I know many wish they had YOUR problem. When they come around, watch movie marathons of Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, Diary of a Mad Black Woman & Madea Goes to Jail. Picture yourself as Madea. That will eat up some time and give you laughs too. Have fun wit cho’ family !!!

After weeks of declining his advances, I recently gave in and we went out to dinner. I had such a great time with this man. He is kind, considerate, sexy and lots of fun. He keeps me laughing. Well, we have been going out since then and I have been loving it. The problem is I have been holding back from people knowing about us. After about a month of going out, I gave in to him physically. This man BLEW MY MIND, BODY AND SOUL. He had me screaming & speaking a foreign language when he hit that spot. I felt so embarrassed. My problem is this: I’m a big girl, he is younger and smaller and I’m not sure if I’m a conquest or if he is really into me. I don’t want to look like a fool if he is using me. SHIRLEY’S RESPONSE: Greetings. Girl, stop talking yourself out of happiness. If you are unsure of his intentions, ASK HIM. He obviously doesn’t have a problem with your size because HE APPROACHED YOU and is taking you around people, not trying to hide how he feels about you. As for the age, if he is over 18 years old, then you are not committing a crime. Stop beating yourself up about your size. Love your curves and embrace the man that loves them too. You can’t love someone else until you love yourself first. Don’t miss out on something good by not believing in yourself.

SIZE, AGE & A YOUNGER MAN Question: There is a guy that has been coming around since our office Christmas party. We work for a large well known company and before the party, I had never seen him because of the the building’s size. He introduced himself, we talked, danced and after the party, I thought that was it. He began sending emails with messages about how beautiful I am. (I am a size 24. he weighs all of 160 pounds). He has changed his lunch time so that we have lunch at the same time. He makes no secret to anyone around that he is attracted to me. He is 15 years younger than I which is why I hesitated.

Makeup Myth Quiz 2015 Maria Williams CEO of The Color Box By Maria Makeup Made Easy and Simple

Hello to all my Queen Size Queens and Kings, and happy summer to you all. My love for makeup grows each and every day! As a makeup artist and skin care specialist I constantly research, read, contact various vendors, take certification classes and most importantly test products before I blog, sell or recommend them to my clients. One of the aspects I find during the research process is not only the vast amount of information BUT the amount of INCORRECT INFORMATION presented about beauty products. The use of Social Media has made retrieving and sending information a breeze. The invention of You Tube has made every one a GURU and even an overnight success in the beauty world.

Now I must admit that some of the information has some use and even validity because what may not work for you may work for someone else. So in all fair “defense” I won’t say that all information is incorrect information. I prefer to call them “Makeup Myths”. So here is a Make Up Myth Quiz to see how much do you really know about make up.

Take this quiz and email me your answers to thecolorbox69gmail.com. The first two people who receive a perfect score will win a free MAKE UP ERASER. Please e-mail your answers to thecolorbox69@gmail.com So GOOD LUCK my beauties!

BEHIND

BEHIND THE LENS

THE LENS

LISA ROCHELLE JOHNSON It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words; I believe it is worth a million plus words. My name is Lisa Rochelle Johnson and I was born in the heart of Chicago IL in 1969. Growing up in the big city there was always something to see and do. I come from a large family and when we got together it looked like a reunion every time. My love of photography came early in life, because while my family all came together for whatever celebration, I have this one uncle who always brought his camera and took a ton of pictures. I watched him every time, and I realized he was creating memories not just pictures. At that time I loved photography but I never purchased a camera until I got to high school. In high school I was looking for a class to fill up my schedule for the year, and I came across a photography class and I ran for it. I found that in taking this class that there is more to just pointing a lens and pushing a button. I learned so much more, and the more I learned the more I loved it. One day the teacher gave us an assignment to take the cameras home and shoot the neighborhood we lived in; I was geeked. I ran home and got to work. Now I lived just outside of downtown Chicago and across the street from Chinatown, so there was plenty to shoot. The one photo out of the 20 photos I took still stands out to this day, it was an evening shot overlooking the city lights from Chinatown, the city train system going by, and people walking the streets. I lived in a high-rise apartment building with a laundry room on the top floor. I ran up to the top floor, opened the window and got the perfect view. When I went back to school the next morning we developed our photos and handed them in for grades. The one photo that I hoped would turn out good got me the highest score, and it was then I knew that I had passion for taking pictures. Throughout my youth and adult life as I started a family I joined my uncle in taking family photos. But when motherhood went to a new level I slowed down with my photography to focus on life. But after some years away from photography I had to go back to what I knew I loved so dearly. I am currently a church photographer as well as an independent photographer.

DAVINNIA FONSECA PHOTOGRAPHER |Rick Jones, RJones Photography

Davinnia Fonseca has been modeling for roughly 3 years. She has had the opportunity to walk for Ashley Stewart and more recently Evolution of Curves. Daninnia loves to model because she likes that it puts her in a position to be able to empower women to love and accept their bodies through fashion. She finds it very rewarding to create images that women can relate to and see themselves in, as well as help them find clothes that make them look and feel good about themselves and their bodies. “I find the plus size industry so exciting right now. It is at a stage where it is growing and changing all while pushing the boundaries of its very own definition. I have no doubt I fit somewhere in there and plan on finding my very own niche within the industry. I think the most important thing to remember about modeling is to not become discouraged. You won’t fit every job you try for but remain confident in your abilities and never be afraid to try something new.”

A MOVE OF GOD DANCE SCHOOL| BY TAWANA BLASSINGAME

A MOVE OF GOD DANCE SCHOOL A Move of God Dance School was established on July 19, 2014 to the vision of Erica Jack Edmonds with the help and support of her husband Jerry Edmonds and family members. Erica has been dancing sense the age of three. Her mom often tells the story that Erica would tap dance with her grandfather’s shoes on in front of the TV for hours. She had a passion to dance. At the age of five Erica’s mom enrolled her in New Experience Dance School where she received her skills and technique. Erica has received the dancer of the year award many times throughout her childhood. Erica continued N.E.D.S. for the majority of her childhood until she was accepted to the High School of Performing Arts in Brooklyn N.Y... Even as an adult with four children her passion to dance has increased even more as she began to teach her daughter Alaijah Archer at a young age. The two has performed together several times. After many engagements she was asked to teach at several churches and community organizations; it was then that Erica gave herself to the lord. It was not long after that when the lord began to show her visions of dance. At first Erica thought that it was just the love she had for dance popping up in her head as a constant reminder of what she was suppose to do, but one night the Lord spoke to her and told her to open a dance school and name it A Move of God Dance School. And just as God gave her the vision, A Move of GOD Dance School was birthed. The minute the prophetic anointing was released, the Lord was faithful to show Erica a vision. The whole stage had turned into a furrowed field into which she was to plant seeds. Just like when we receive a prophetic word or vision, from the Lord and He only initially gives a small portion of it, if we are faithful to bring it forth, He is faithful to give us the rest. She acted on faith, and began to dance out the vision and plant the seeds. It was then, that the Lord gave her more. She began to make motions as if she were watering the plants, and motioned for the sun to shine on each one. Once the indication was made that they had

grown enough to be sent out (as if to evangelize) by the wind of the Spirit, they were to later bring in a harvest themselves. And it was in that same spirit that A Move of GOD Dance School was birthed. It was after Erica spent many years training her daughter Alaijah Archer (who is now a junior instructor) that she noticed how God really moved and changed the lives of people through dance. After hearing many testimonies it brought confirmation to the Vision that God had given her. It reminded her of when God looked and startled the nations. Not only were the mountains scattered, but hills even bowed. His ways are everlasting. God’s movements are so powerful (when He moves in a procession) that even the mountains respond to His glance. How powerful against the enemy is our movement when the all powerful God is resident within us and it is with this power that A Move of God Dance School is going to make their mark all around the world. Showing people of all religions, cultures, faiths and beliefs what the power of the almighty God can do through dance. A Move of God Dance school currently has more than fifty students, not counting all of the churches and ministries that she finds herself volunteering to help start their dance ministries. A.M.O.G.D is not only a dance school, but they are a great help to the community. With coat drives and prom dress give always just to name few A.M.O.G will do whatever it takes to help someone in need. Even as someone with the gift of prophecy can hear from God about an individual or situation and deliver it through word or song, so does Erica Edmonds when it comes to the choreography of her dances. She is the dancer with the gift of prophecy to hear from God and deliver a message through movement and when people see and feel the power of God through movement and dance, their lives are changed forever.

THE MISSION: A Move of GOD Dance School mission is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ using the art of dance and to make an international impact by lending our God-given talents to the needs of children and adults who represent the diverse cultures in which we live. To provide an affordable dance school that would increase the opportunity to the community in which we live. OUR VISION: Is to present dance performances to the church to minister to the body of Christ, encouraging them in their walk with, witness for and worship of Jesus Christ, and to present dance performances to the public with the purpose of sharing the Gospel and bringing the lost into relationship with our Lord Jesus. Our Goal: Not all children will develop into professional dancers. One of the primary goals of our faculty is to teach life lessons and skills that offer children the best chance for success. Dance education encompasses far more than technique and the steps your children learn. We believe the discipline of dance training gives young people a better understanding of commitment through learning, experiencing the spirit of teamwork, and discovering what they can accomplish through hard work. Our goal is to educate the minds, bodies, and souls of our students, teaching them the skills needed for a successful life, whether or not they stay involved in dance. Also to be a help to the community by hosting many give-back programs such as food, toys and clothes drives, prom dress/suit & shoes giveaways and support breast cancer awareness.

The Edmonds invited the Queen Size Magazine team into their school to get a closer glimpes at what goes out. I must say that we were quite impressed. All of the children were so very well behaved and eager to learn the ministry of dance. The children in the school range from the tender age of 5 to 16 years of age. The classes are broken up by their age groups which is great because this gives the opportunity for growth and advancements. Often times we think of dance schools we have this preconceived notion that we are going to see booty dropping, hips swaying and the infamous twerking to the sounds of Lil Wayne and friends. Oh but you won’t get any of that at the AMOG Dance School. When I tell that these children and young adults know how to minister to music and have fun doing it, it is definitely a experince to witness. I loved every second of my visit with them. I even got in a little dancing myself.

Tawana: What a blessing you and your family are. You pass people all the time and never know who they really are. Jerry, I remember taking the elevator with you on many occasions; we said our greetings and went on with life. I didn’t know you and you didn’t know me, but obviously it was destined for us to meet. Do you dance as well Jerry? Jerry: Well, Tawana often times my wife will call me in to critique and give my personal opinion on a dance, so if you consider that dancing, then I sure do. Tawana: LOL. Ok Jerry, we can go with that. Erica, you have such a beautiful family. Your passion for dance and teaching is to be commended. After spending a day at your school, it is pretty obvious that you love what you do; it resonates through your spirit. What type of dance do you teach? Erica: Thank you so much Tawana, I really do enjoy dancing it has been my passion most of my life. I teach many different styles of dance. I teach ballet, jazz, modern, tap, African, and hip hop. I also train on all the new styles and types of dances that seem to be hitting the dance world lately. Tawana: Is this the same as what you have learned in your years of training? Erica: Yes it is very much the same, however in many ways it is different. I myself take classes to keep myself afresh of how dance has changed. Tawana: Did you ever think that this is the field that you would ultimately end up in? (If no, what did you see yourself doing?) Erica: Well, after many years of dancing I really had a passion to open my own studio, but I had some doubt after many years had went by; I had a family and was just busy living, but not really living for myself. I was busy taking care of everyone else I forgot about me. So I really thought that my time for dancing was up. That’s when I began to pursue being a classroom teacher. And don’t get me wrong it is very much the same, but I still felt a void. Tawana: Jerry, besides the husband and bodyguard, what position do you play in the company? Jerry: Bodyguard lol. I pretty much take care of all the financial and business part of the dance school. I make sure we stay on budget and always see that our dancers and teachers are taken care of. I am also in charge of the transportation. I see to it that our dancers are always transported to any and every engagement that they are a part of. Tawana: You guys have two sons and two daughters; what are their names and ages? Jerry: My daughters are Alaijah who is 16, Destiny 5, my sons Jerry is 13 and Jeremiah is 11. Tawana: How on earth did you happen to get ALL of your children interested in dance? Especially the boys? Erica: That was easy! It was just a matter of finding the type of dance that the kids were interested in and training them in that area. The boys always wanted to be a part of my dance group , they would get very jealous of the time that I spent with the girls so when I offered hip hop and made it a mandate that you take technique in order to do hip hop they were all for it. Tawana: Now I am about to dig all up in your personal lives; how do you live together AND run a business together without scratching each other’s eyes out? Erica: Trust me it is not easy; Jerry and I have learned when it is time to have down time from the business. And in all honesty we both love doing things to help our community so we don’t find ourselves arguing but finding a middle meet where we both are satisfied. Tawana: How long have you guys been married? Jerry: we have been married for 14 years, looking to renew our vows in 2016.

Tawana: What is your secret? Erica: Keeping God first in everything that we do, always making time for each other and realizing that I don’t always have to have the last say in order to win!!!!! Tawana: What is it like dealing with ALL of those PARENTS? Are the parents involved at all? Jerry: Yes the parents are very much involved. We have parents who love coming in and helping out and we have parents who much rather leave a donation. We have learned that everyone has different attitudes and views but we try our best be as understanding and caring as possible. Tawana: Erica, tell me about the school’s first show? Erica: Our first show was this past Christmas and boy was it a lot of work. What most dance schools pull off over a six month period we did in three. Of course there were some things that could have been better but that is the part of business, learning from your mistakes. Tawana: What would you say sets your dance school apart from others? Erica: What sets us apart is our unique praise that we have to every different song. When you are dancing for Jesus there is a peace that comes over you. It allows you to flow freely and draw people to want to feel what you feel while dancing. Tawana: Where do you get your funding to do so much for these children? Jerry: We get a small amount of our funding from the parents, however we also get small donations from local businesses in our community and local churches that we volunteer our services at. Tawana: Where do you see your company in the next five years? Erica: In the next five years I see the dance school traveling all over the globe ministering to people through dance. Showing the world that just like preaching, dance can also change the lives of people. Tawana: Erica, what shows do you have coming up that you can share with us? KEEPING COOL WITH SMOOTHIES BY TAWANA BLASSINGAME

I am NOT, repeat…. I am NOT a fan of the HOT summer days. Therefore I am always searching for ways to keep cool. Whether it is finding the biggest trees to hide under or going from store to store pretending to be shopping, just so I can bum some AC. Don’t act like you don’t do it too. I do not like to be hot and I certainly do not like to sweat unnecessarily. Last summer I found that drinking fruit smoothies really helped to keep me cool when I had to go outside. There is a deli where I work that sells really delicious smoothies. I have tried them all and have found that there was always one ingredient in them all that I didn’t like. I tried the Berry Bonanza but didn’t like the blueberries. I tried the Orange Strawberry Banana but didn’t like the Strawberries. I tried the Mango Madness but that too had strawberries. I went through them all until one day I kindly asked the young man can I try my own concoction. He said he wasn’t really supposed to because it wasn’t populated in the register and that the cashiers wouldn’t know what to charge. So we worked it out to where I just doctored up one of the ones that they already had. I became addicted to what soon became the South Beach Smoothie; which was the mango madness with no strawberries. The smoothie consists of the following ingredients: One whole banana Half cup of pineapples Half cup of Mango ¼ cup of plain Greek yogurt One cup of Apple Juice And Ice Blend all of the ingredients together until it is a smooth consistency. Pour it in a cup, add a straw, sip and enjoy. This really helps me out when I get over heated in the summer time. It also serves as a great meal replacement; if you are anything like me, I don’t even want to eat when it gets too hot. For some added fun, add some nice flavored alcohol to it to give it that extra umph....

ELIZABETH LUQUE

also known as Liz Luque, was born and raised in Los Angeles California. To some people, Los Angeles is just a regular city, but to her it lived up to its name; the true City of Angels. The city’s hard exterior with its twist of its bright glitz and glamour is what helped developed Liz Luque into Madam Fancy. Liz came from a very loving and united family of three along with her grandmother being the greatest inspiration. She considers family the most valuable thing in her life and she uses the love and strength in her family to continue through her life’s journey. Her roots stem from Honduras in Central America, in which she takes strong pride in being Latina. Thus, she was honored to have won the title of Miss Honduras for Pan American International pageant and placed 3rd in the finals in 2006. And that same year, she was given the opportunity to represent California in the Miss Latina USA Pageant and earned two calendar spreads in 2007. At such a young age, Liz had an advantage in which she knew what her heart and passion was; fashion, and she was driven to make a difference in the industry. Whether it was modeling or designing, Liz had a certain “Je ne sai quoi” about her that had everyone calling her Miss Madam Fancy. Her career started off as a model and she never thought that she would be considered as a designer. She had walked in various high fashion runway shows and was continuously booking shows all over the country. Liz felt like she had her whole life and world under control, traveling for shows, creating her own style and designing her own clothes, popular amongst her peers, and already impacting those around her. She was on top of the world and was ready to enter college and dominate. Liz attended Cal State Northridge University and in her first semester of college her life took a twist. The life in which she felt like she had all under control had then turn to a life left for chance. Liz Luque was diagnosed with Cancer at the age of 17 and her world how she knew it was shaken up. She went from strutting her stuff down a runway to having to go through intense chemotherapy and being paralyzed. The love from her family and friends gave her the strength to keep on fighting. Liz was determined to not let her weaknesses overpower her strengths and wanted to stay focused on the positives around her. Although her light for pursuing a modeling career dimmed when she was diagnosed, Liz never gave up in her passion for fashion. Her friends and family would bring her fashion books and magazines and during treatment Liz would study the current trends, create her own designs and dream of ideas she could make but all she could do is draw them out. Thanks to her positive attitude, her belief in God and of course all the chemo therapy, Liz was able to beat it! She realized then that she wanted to inspire the kids that she bonded with while being hospitalized. She wanted to show them how “you can go from being sick and insecure to feeling healthy and beautiful again in no time”. A nightmare turned into a blessing in disguise and Liz without realizing it found her calling. After battling such a fight, Liz was more determined to conquer the world not only in fashion but she felt like she was given a second chance to be an inspiration to kids and women around the world. In 2006 once she was in remission she started exercising again and getting in shape to do pageants to prove her point. That is when she created her first swimsuit because she wanted something that would stand out to win the title of Miss Honduras USA. At that moment MADAM FANCY came alive. Liz began designing swimsuits for herself and they were all such hits that she was getting requests to design suits for females around her. She focused her designs to be custom, so no matter what shape, height, or size you are her suits were made to fit your body and make you feel secure and proud of who you are. Entering into the swim industry, Liz had a stigma in which she felt like she was not accepted by all the entire female population. There was always the battle of her not fitting into the high end and size 0 category, or her not fitting into the normal size and plus size category. As a result, Liz felt like she didn’t need to have to fit into a specific group or category. Her inspirations and designs are catered to all women that are willing to be comfortable in her own skin and make a bold statement of accepting who they are. She studied all body types and figures of women and was able to understand as a designer what is needed for a particular shape and size. Liz was given the opportunity to design and help develop “Heavenly Curves” a plus size lingerie line. Although, it was challenging to get plus size women to accept her as a plus size lingerie designer, Liz was able to affirm to the women that she too is curvy and had similar concerns of her figure when it comes to clothes, fashion and trends. Thus, through personal experiences, Liz was able to prove her talents and skills in fashion design to be genuine and true to a woman’s body. From there she was able to gain the respect from the women around her and that moment became the re-birth of her high end custom swimwear line “Unique Swimwear” now revamped as Fancy Swimwear. Her designs are tasteful, classy, colorfully expressive, and bold. However, the line is not only limited to those things, if one prefers a more subtle and suave swimsuit, it offers a great selection in that as well. The line is clearly like no other. Whether it’s Madam Fancy, Futuristic, Flashback, Safari Inspired, Scenic, or International it allows for the one wearing the suit to be whatever or wherever she wants to be. Fancy Swimwear by Liz Luque exudes a touch of Avant Garde personality with a spontaneous, classy and sexy twist to it. Unlike your ordinary swimsuit line, many would call it a breath of fresh air for the swimwear market. With six different themes of swimsuits in popular demand, Fancy Swimwear is off to a great start in offering custom fit designs that are unparalleled and incomparable to anything in its market. She has many credits of celebrities like Iggy Azelea, Kendra Wilkinson (Playboy Playmate) and Vida Guerra in her line, and till this day she pushes her brand to be unique and fancy. Fancy Swimwear by Liz Luque is composed of different divisions; Madam Fancy, Safari, Futuristic and Flashback; all in which represents a different element of her inspirations. In the Flashback Collection, Liz takes inspiration from eras that were prominent in the fashion industry. Therefore, her newest collection, Fancy Athletica, was inspired by the late 1980’s early 1990’s. Think of Pamela Anderson’s Bay Watch red swimsuit with a twist of color pallets from windbreakers and sneakers. Bringing together an athletic look with a twist of fancy trends from today Fancy Athletica is cutting edge bold! The swimsuits have bright color blocking combinations that are simply breath taking! A breath of fresh air with a twist of fancy. For this issue, both the designer and photographer was focused on the 1950’s theme, from the Flashback Collection which was inspired by Marilyn Monroe and embracing women of all curves! These classic swimsuits are like nothing out today and here is why I picked each of these suits for each model....

Model Olga Kirpicheva - size 6 is wearing a black and white monokini with a zipper detail in the front and side pockets that blend in. The monokini is sewn into a chevron to create contour along the waistline. Olga is a thin model and to give her body a more curvy illusion, I designed the monokini into shorts.

Model Sandy JeanPhilippe - size 22 is wearing a red monokini with gold decorative buttons. The swimsuit had a sweet heart top that halters for lift. The straps come all the way from under her arms, it is wide to give the ultimate support but still have that retro style. There is sheering along side front and back that not only go well with the era but are very slimming! The swimsuit is made out of very strong Lycra with a “spanks like thick lining under layer.

Model Brenda Luque - size 12 is wearing a half polka-dot monokini. The bottom is black almost creating an illusion of a high waisted bottom with a extra layer of fabric to flatten and slim. At the back of the waist it ties to carry more of a waistline for those mothers that have that problem area. A detail gold button in the bra area which has light padding that also give a push up look for the breast. Super cute but covered up monokini, black works with and red polka dots!

Tawana: What an incredible and inspiring story you have. You mentioned that fashion has always been your passion; where did that passion come from? Liz: Ever since I can remember, I would always get creative as a little girl and make things. I use to cut pants and re-sew them into purses. My grandmother would always sew pillows and banquets’ and taught me how to sew at a young age. My mom would cut her sweats and turn them into shorts and do the same for my pants because I kept growing out of them so quickly, but I did not think we were designing or being creative. We would just make stuff it was what we did. In high school I liked to rhinestone everything and use to glue it onto my Nike swoosh and shirts, pants and backpacks; again not thinking I was designing until others asked me to do theirs. I went to high school in the valley and had a very LA style with the airbrushing and rhinestone I use to make them for other classmates and charge them more. Then I designed my prom dress and had my neighbor making it so three other friends asked me to do the same. That’s what I think started it all after that whenever I could not find something I like I would have my neighbor make it. Amelia she’s a professional seamstress and sample maker, she still makes my first samples till this day! Tawana: Congratulations on the pageant; what made you enter? How long were you modeling before you entered? Liz: I entered my first pageant when I was 19yrs old, 1 year after coming out of the hospital from beating cancer Leukemia and Lymphoma. When I was going through chemo I had lost all my hair and felt so ugly. I use to entertain myself by going downstairs to visit kids and encourage them to be positive and ask questions like me because my faith told me I was beating it. So when I finally beat it I wanted to prove a point to the kids and show them that “beauty” or being beautiful on the outside is nothing it can be conquered so easily what matters is what’s on the inside. They saw me at my lowest I wanted to prove to them how fast I could beat cancer and go back out into the world and feel confident and “beautiful” again. What better way than doing a pageant and being rated one of the most beautiful girls in the state or country? I modeled for 3 years before the pageant two before I was diagnosed in high school and 1 year after I got out of the hospital. I modeled in runways with short hair and did hair and face modeling for Sebastian Hair products months after being out of the hospital. No one could believe it! Tawana: Were/Are they’re any designers that inspire you? Liz: I was really inspired by Jlo when I was in high school I wanted to model for her because I felt like she catered to curvy women. I even went and lined up at a mall for a model contest she had. She is one of my idols as a businesswoman in general. When I was in the hospital I use to sketch out jeans similar to hers but wanted to make tall sizes, shorter one and all sizes because I was tall and usually jeans would be too short on me. Well now I see more tall sizes out but back then I did not. I would say Jlo is my idol but I love Chanel as a designer she is so classic. I am inspired by the elegance and simplicity in her style although she is fancy and flashy with the gold details in here bottoms and pendants. When I think Madam Fancy I think Chanel classic sheik, my favorite era is the 1950’s and a lot of the styles I like are because of her. Tawana: How did you learn to design and sew? Liz: I self taught myself a lot, but I took some fashion classes here and there. My sketches use to be very amateur even after graduating from college so I took a Saturday class at my local college. I decided to go to school for business got a BA and a BS in Consumer Sciences for Textiles and Apparel Production. I took a lot of fashion related classes in college but since I wasn’t a fashion design major I wasn’t taught a lot of the basics. The way I saw it was that I wanted to learn the business and creating a line side from school, and then leave designing as a hobby because it was fun to me. I felt like school took out all the fun, but I did take the classes I wanted to take at a local college after and enjoyed them because I wasn’t doing it for a grade I was doing it for fun! Tawana: Do people come to you with an idea of what they want in a swimsuit or do you just look at their body type and measurements and recommend something for them? Liz: I do both. Some of my clients know exactly what they want but others need help. I ask them what they like and then I make recommendations as well. We design the suit together or I just tell them what I think would look good on them and they trust or like what I say. Sometimes all they know is what color they want their suit and that’s fine I can work with everything. Tawana: I want to briefly acknowledge your courage and how inspired I was when I learned of your story. I congratulate you on being a survivor; I congratulate you for being a fighter, and I congratulate you for sharing your experiences to help others. You showed your appreciation for your second chance at life. What was the experience like for you? Liz: Thank you I appreciate it, it was a hard fight, but I could honestly say it was a blessing in disguise. Because of what I went through now I can be a role model and I can inspire others to fight and do the same. It is different to hear advice from someone that has been through it, my story is helping others and I truly feel like I found my calling. It’s funny how life works I made my first swimsuit for a pageant for Miss Honduras USA it was a swimsuit of the Honduras flag and that was to inspire kids in the hospital. I ended up falling in love with swimwear out of all the stuff I would make. For my new collection Fancy Athetica I made matching head caps I call “Fancy Caps” that now I am using as a tool to share my story. I am

making them and donating them to cancer patients the message is KEEP SWIMMING KEEP GOING like I did and they too can beat cancer. I never thought that everything would fall in place like that. God really has a plan for me and I ready for it. It took me 10 years to feel comfortable enough to share my story. As of last year a lot of my friends did not know I was a cancer survivor they didn’t know I was once paralyzed because I workout so much and look so healthy. Because I know what it is like to wakeup everyday with pain and just pray to not have pain, I appreciate everything in a different way. I live it up as if it were my last, some of my friends say “ Liz it is not that serious you need to rest you do too much” but I am just full of life and need to push hard everyday. Everyday counts everyday I move closer to my goals, I work hard and I am proud of it. I can’t wait for all the fruit of my hard work to flourish. But for now it makes me happy to be able to inspire others through my story. Tawana: Do you also do speaking engagements? Liz: Yes I love to speak, and usually when I do I share my story it is in 3rd person. I say “let me share a story about this girl because her story changed my life…(Then after I’m done sharing I say) I know that story very well because that girl is me” It drives the crowd crazy I look so healthy god has blessed me with such beautiful long hair no one can believe that I beat two of the most severe cancers and that I was once paralyzed. I just ran the women’s San Francisco Half Marathon last year by the way it benefited the two cancers I survived. I’m not a runner but was calling me; I might do a whole one next year that knows! Now with my Fancy Caps I am getting a chance to share more and do more speaking at hospitals and cancer related events too. Tawana: Do you plan to design more than just swimwear? Liz: Yes, I have my fancy caps. I also design for this contemporary leisure line called Rich Bums Co. I have a Madam Fancy Tee out right now that’s pretty sick it’s really west coast with a custom made bandana pattern; people in the East coast might really like it. I design for the whole women’s department of Rich Bums and whenever I want I make myself anything I want. My seamstress can sew anything, when I saw anything I mean she can make an embellished wedding dress! I make dresses for different events just for myself. Tawana: What are your thoughts on the fashion industry as a whole? Liz: I think it’s a cutthroat industry but I love it. People copy a lot that’s why I do not have all my stuff online I have been knocked off before. But when you are creative it does not matter because there is more where that came from, I can create all the time and they cant take my creativity away! That is why I like custom swimwear because I can make something different every time! Tawana: I ask everyone the same question to everyone; if you could change one thing about the industry what would it be? Liz: Giving more opportunities to the underdogs, I have always felt like the industry is all about a brand a name. Or about money and where you’re from, I use to consult designers and if they are not ordering in high quantities they get shut down. I just wish people would be more aware of the hard working start up companies and give them a chance, maybe charge a little more but take their orders. Everyone starts somewhere some times we all need a chance. Tawana: Are you planning to do any fashion shows in the near future? Liz: I am doing an annual show called Fancy For Life, last October was my first one and it was a total hit! What was pretty cool about it was that it was a fundraiser for Cancer research. As we all know October is Breast Cancer awareness month well in LA in October there is also Fashion week at the same time. I got to share my new collection and raise money for Cancer research at the same time. I also helped bring awareness to Cancer in the fashion industry and to young people! It was such a cool event that I am doing it again in October you guys should totally cover it. Sneak peek my new collection is called “15 shades of pink” working on it now, will be seen for the first time in October at Fancy for Life 2016 Collection! Tawana: Please let everyone know where they can find out more about you Liz and where they can possibly see/order some of your custom made pieces. Liz: You can order and see more on www. Fancy Swimwear. Net and also on social media! @fancyswimwear for twitter and Instagram and for facebook.com/FancySwimwear Custom swimsuit orders can also be emailed to me directly Elizabeth@fancyswimwear.net, on my website you can submit a custom inquiry or order semi custom it all comes to the same email. Tawana: Liz it was such a pleasure speaking with you and getting know you and what you do. Please keep up the great and keep us posted on your success. Congratulations to you, we wish you continued wealth and health. Liz: Thank You I appreciate the opportunity to share my story and more about me out in NY!

CHARLESE WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHER|DOUG SWAIM NEVER FORGOTTEN PHOTOGRAPHY

Charlese Williams is an aspiring full figured model from Capitol Heights, MD. As a child Charlese was very selfconscience. She has never been what society deems normal size. Like most, she struggled with her weight and the fat jokes until she learned to love herself. In Charlese’s junior year in high school she joined the cosmetology program. She became quite passionate about her new love that it inspired her to want to try different looks. She wasn’t afraid to play around with different styles of hair, the clothing she wore, and she even played around with makeup. Being in the program opened her eyes to so much more; she wanted to learn everything. “Watching Rip The Runway one night really opened my eyes. I began experimenting more with makeup. Once I felt like I took that leap of faith and booked my first shoot. To this day I love everything about the fashion world. Fashion is my #1 passion, and I believe God instilled in me the gifts to do hair, makeup, and the ability to add my own flair to my clothing because this is my calling. Not to mention I love the camera. With my positive attitude and happy go lucky personality I would be that breath of fresh air on any set.”

Traces Of My Pen

SATURDAY

By: Amanda Tucciarone

The morning nobody talks about;

Hell they’re great for just about anything and what’s even better than that,

The morning that gets left behind in the shadows-

Is being able to do it all over again the very next day!

Because of infamous Sunday morning fiascos.

Some may underestimate Saturday mornings because they don’t have that:

The morning you spend with that special someone you spent Friday night with-

“Sunday Morning” cliché vibe…

But as for some, it’s just another day with the same ole fella.

But at least on Saturdays, you don’t have to go to work the next day-

Saturday morning is the day you get to sleep in a little later instead of having to get up early.

But if you do,

Today you’re sleeping in past 8 am and it’s going to be amazing.

I’ll pour another glass for you. ~

Saturday morning is the day you get to stay in bed ‘till 12 in the afternoon not doing a single thing at all;

In the end,

Unless you have little kids running around-

It doesn’t always matter how you spend your mornings or afternoons,

Then you miiight want to wake up a bit sooner:

It’s who you spend them with that matters most.

Silence isn’t always a good thing with children on the prowl.

Whether it’s staying in bed all day and not getting out of your pajamas,

It’s the official start of the weekend for most,

Working another slow shift at work

But for those of you who have to go to workI’ll pour an extra glass for you.

Or running last minute errands for the kids while they tag along and wine the whole time;

~

Saturday mornings just give you another chance for that perfect morning feeling

Sometimes Saturday’s aren’t all that great though…

We all try so hard to achieve.

There’s football practice,

But in the mix of trying to achieve perfection,

Cheerleading try outs, Or early morning soccer games-

You miss out on the moments that were already perfect to begin with…

You have to sit-around-in-the-cold-for.

And all those small moments that we tend to look past,

But at least they’re great for birthday parties and spontaneously planned trips to the beach.

Will end up being some of the greatest we’ll ever experience.
