FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief Welcome to the August 2019 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Summer is HERE and it is no secret whatsoever that we have this love hate relationship. I love that we don’t have to suffer through the cold but I also hate the heat. Yep, I am one of those! Anywho!!! Enough complaining. I wanted to discuss these last couple of months and some things that I learned. I have (for the most part) been able to take on a lot and pace myself. That in itself is a blessing and a curse because I always feel like I can take on more. Putting together a magazine everyone month is a lot of work. And then on top of that I took on producing an award ceremony. I have never put together a major show like this so I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I knew it would be a lot but I don’t think I was mentally prepared for how much work it REALLY was. I had some serious moments with myself; moments where I had to talk myself out of giving up. If you know me then you know that was obviously not an option. I really learned and am still learning some things about myself. I am learning that I have to set limits and not allow myself to overwhelm ME. It is ok to do all that you want to do; but it is not a good idea to try and do it all at once. Set schedules when you are going to work on certain things and stick to it. In every issue I feel it is imperative to give thanks to everyone that continues to support us. We appreciate you more than words can say. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

There’s nothing better than a night on the town. But when you’re trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle, restaurant menus aren’t always your friend. Here are six foods to avoid -- some are sneaky, some are loaded with calories and sugar and some are just easy to overdo. The Bread Basket: Besides water, the pile of bread delivered to your table is one of the few things you’ll get for free. But it’s not completely free. Each roll, when slathered with butter, can amount to around 140 calories. Here’s a tip from South Beach Diet ambassador, Jessie James Decker, “I like to order a fresh salad to start my meal so that I’m not quite as hungry. It allows me to avoid the bread.” Margaritas and Daiquiris: Even a lime margarita -- without strawberry, mango or other flavors -- can be close to 300 calories with an astounding 36 grams of sugar. If you go for a second round, you’ve downed 600 calories before the appetizers even arrive. Opt for a seltzer with lime or glass of white wine instead. Guacamole: Avocado is loaded with healthy fats that can help you stay full, have been shown in studies to burn off belly fat and benefit heart health. Add lycopene from the tomatoes and guacamole seems like a great choice. But serving size matters. A proper serving is just a quarter cup, which at most restaurants, gets scooped onto one or two chips. And those chips aren’t helping, either. With chips and dip together, “tableside guacamole” served at major chain restaurants can be almost 1500 total calories. Caesar Salad: But it’s salad! Right? Technically, yes. But it’s covered in cheese and creamy dressing that can be up to 180 calories per serving. Croutons alone can deliver 93 calories in just a half-cup serving. Add protein, and you could be consuming almost half a day’s worth of calories. Your best bet? Stick to garden salads with vinaigrette dressing on the side. Chicken Wings: Wings pack a big caloric punch for being so small. That’s because they’re more skin than meat, and most buffalo sauces have a pretty simple recipe: half melted butter, half hot sauce. A “small” order of medium-heat wings from a top chain has 820 calories and a jawdropping 45 grams of fat. That’s more fat than you’ll find in four servings of butter. Split an order and make it your meal or skip the wings and get grilled tenders with dipping sauce on the side. Anything “Loaded,” “Double-stuffed,” “Creamy,” “Cheesy” or “Fried”: All those terms are missing one word -- “over.” They’re overloaded, overstuffed and usually oversized. An order of “loaded” potato skins at one popular restaurant has almost 1400 calories and nearly 100 grams of fat. For more healthy tips, visit palm.southbeachdiet.com. Eating out is a favorite pastime for many. So, don’t give it up. Simply learn to navigate menus, sticking to items that keep you on track. StatePoint

LOW CARB RECIPES FOR A COOKOUT| STATEPOINT
5 DELICIOUS LOW-CARB RECIPES PERFECT FOR A COOKOUT Food on the grill, carb-loaded side dishes and high-sugar desserts are at the center of most seasonal cookouts. But this doesn’t mean you need to avoid those countless neighborhood barbecues to ensure you stay on track with your healthy lifestyle. Courtney McCormick, manager of Clinical Research & Nutrition for South Beach Diet, recommends these five lowercarb recipes that are great to bring along to any cookout. Shredded Chicken Chili: Just toss some chicken, beans, tomatoes and a combination of chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and oregano in your slow cooker and let that magic machine do all the work. Six hours later, you’ll have perfectly cooked chicken and plenty of flavorful fixings for fewer calories than a chicken prepared in a sugary or cheesy sauce. Avocado Tuna Sandwiches: Mix lemon juice, avocado, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper in a small bowl and add canned tuna fish. Scoop onto a slice of whole grain bread with arugula, sliced cucumbers and red onions and you’ve got yourself a delicious sandwich to eat in place of that hamburger. Skinny Shrimp Fajitas: You won’t miss the tortilla with this recipe! Combine shrimp, onion, bell pepper, olive oil and dry fajita spices such as chili powder, garlic, onion, cumin and paprika in a large bowl. Pour into a veggie basket or place on skewers and let the grill do the work for you.
Pesto Cilantro Dip: Bake walnuts at 275 degrees until golden brown, then chop cilantro, garlic, and walnuts in a food processor for about 25 seconds. With the machine running, pour olive oil in a steady stream. Add sour cream, lemon juice and salt. Pulse a few times to combine and you’re done! Serve with fresh veggies. “This recipe is quick and simple,” says McCormick. “It contains minimal ingredients and it is packed with healthy fats. Plus, it keeps five days in the refrigerator and freezes for up to a month.” South Beach Coleslaw: Coleslaw is a BBQ staple and this recipe for a lighter version of it is easy as 1-2-3! Whisk together mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, celery seed and a sugar substitute. Add cabbage and toss to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper and refrigerate until ready to serve. For more details on these recipes and other great tips and tricks to lose weight and live healthier, visit South Beach Diet’s website The Palm at palm.southbeachdiet.com/cookout-lowcarb-recipes. Remember, cookouts don’t need to wreak havoc on your healthy diet. By making some simple swaps and choosing healthier options, you’ll stay on track while still enjoying time outdoors with family and friends. Statepoint

IS SHE TOO YOUNG FOR MAKEUP | LAWANDA SANYANG
Hello Queens, we all know little girls love playing in their mommy’s makeup. But have you ever thought about how young is too young to actually start wearing makeup. Children are being exposed to the Artistry of makeup at a very early age. With the onset of social media It is not uncommon to find five and six year olds girls with their own makeup YouTube page teaching tutorials. Makeup has also become a requirement for most girls who participate in dance, cheer and pageants. Is it all just done in fun or is it sending a message to our young girls that they’re not enough and they need to wear makeup to look and feel pretty? Helping these young impressionable minds build personal character and not just social media likes is a key factor. Young girls have to be taught that they are beautiful and their value is priceless. And they should see makeup as an enhancement only and not used as a building blocks in their character. Queens let standup and let our Princesses know they are beautiful and rarer than any jewels with or with makeup. Smooches Queens, Lawanda Sanyang (Lala) www.lalafaces.com

And the inspiration behind the cover story
FEATURED STORY
QSM: Corrinn, you have an overall impeccable vision. What made you choose The Wiz as an inspiration for this particular shoot? Corrinn: The Wiz has always been a work of art both near and dear to my heart. It recently celebrated 40 years since its original release and because it has inspired me so much over time, I wanted to, in some way, pay homage to a production and feature film that broke so many barriers in its time. The storyline while familiar to its audience, took black culture and celebrated it, giving us our own place in movie history. We need more powerful visuals like that today. QSM: Let’s talk a little about this amazing team that you worked with on this. Corrinn: My DREAMTEAM! The editorial was shot by Kia Caldwell Photography. Kia is an amazing photographer and friend. On set she truly connects with whomever she’s working with and takes the experience to the next level with her suggestions, and personality. During the production of The Wiz, she truly understood my vision from the very start and I really didn’t have to do much but come in and create. Catherine Ashly is a master at what she does! Her hair and makeup abilities far superseded anything I could’ve asked for on this project. She’s what I like to call the cherry on top because she comes in and pulls the concept that I created together with very little direction. She sees the vision and she brings it to life. We all work exceptionally well together; that’s why we’re great friends. QSM: Now how did you guys choose the models? You guys were dead on with the characters; the models fit perfectly the descriptions of each character perfectly. Corrinn: I was truly intentional on collaborating with visibly plus models who I felt could truly connect with the characters and bring their stories to life through pictures. Commercial modeling is the bread and butter for most models, and I love that. But I set out to really push the models to become the character. Based on that, I began following different models on social media, watching their interactions and reached out based on how I thought that they could contribute to the project.

CORRINN BRINGS YOU THE WIZ | QSM
QSM: How long did it take for your idea to come to life for this? Corrinn: Honestly, this is the longest time frame it has ever taken to complete a project. Lol. We initially began shooting a character a week in October 2018. We took a hiatus for Catherine Ashly’s wedding; the holidays, life etc. and jumped back on schedule in April. Typically we’d shoot something like this is one day. Building out the sets, changing looks, having a good time; on average we could complete it in 10 hours, we’ve done it before. But for this project it was important that each model had their own day to come and take the time they needed to get into character and really bring this concept to life. QSM: You mentioned The Wiz and The Never-ending Story being two of your favorite movies. The Never-ending story is also one of my favorite movies. Let’s talk about you for a moment. Tell us a little bit about who you are. Corrinn: So it’s always weird talking about myself. But if I had to “elevator pitch” myself, I’d say I’m a whimsical wordsmith and Wardrobe ninja. I love books and old movies. My favorite movies are the ones that require you to forget everything you were ever taught about the real world. I’m a very private and loyal person but I truly enjoy the company of genuine, down to earth and fun-loving people. I’m multitalented in that I sing, style clothing, homes and events and if I watch a tutorial once, I’m practically an expert on something. QSM: How did you get into styling? Corrinn: Growing Up my mom and dad were absolutely stunning and fashionable. My mom was a signed model and she’d model for Lord and Taylor and John Wanamaker’s and several other department stores and catalogs. I was always around fashion. In 2009, I decided to start a fashion blog called The Fuller Figure. After 3 months of blogging, I had readers reaching out to me to dress them and take them shopping or shop for them. I had a vintage boutique with a partner for a short while and I would Style the customers who shopped with us. Once I realized how much I actually loved helping others look and feel amazing I began intentionally creating a style brand that I could be proud of. QSM: But you are more than just a fashion stylist. You also do set designing (forgive me If I got the actual name of that wrong). Can you remember your first set design? Corrinn: My first set design was not fashion oriented at all but very memorable for me. Believe it or not it was actually for a school. The principal was a member of my church and she wanted something different for the student pictures that year and she’d seen my creativity previously. I created jumbo size Number 2 pencils, alphabet blocks, primary color crayons and “loose leaf paper” as the backdrop. I was 15 years old. Every year afterwards until I went away to college, I’d create something else unique and whimsical to outdo the previous year.
25
QSM: What would you say was your most challenging concept to execute and why? Corrinn: So anyone who has ever worked with me on set would probably tell you I’m optimistic to a fault. I honestly believe that any concept is conceivable. I normally just have to figure out how to make it happen. I don’t believe any material is off limits to use to create a concept (the Tin Man’s foil background is aluminum pans fixated to look like panels) and I’m willing to twist into a pretzel on set to show the model what look I want from them. I think the most challenging part about editorials is the time it takes to create some of the custom pieces I use. QSM: Is this a full-time job for you? Corrinn: In March of 2018, I became full time with my career as a wardrobe stylist and Creative director. Previously I was an HR Manager and truly enjoyed coaching others and helping them achieve their career goals, but there was no creative outlet for me, and that no longer served me well. It was ultimately the best decision I could’ve made because my brand has grown tremendously now that I’ve been able to dedicate 100% of my time to doing what I love and my clients. QSM: When someone wants to hire you for your services, what does that process look like for you? I am sure it is more than just them paying a fee. (I asked this question because people have a huge misunderstanding of what a stylist is supposed to do for them. I also feel like they underestimate the need for one. Lol) Corrinn: I do agree that many underestimate the need for a Stylist. When collaborating with my clients, I use style as a strategy to create visibility for the work that they’re doing. A large misconception is that I only provide my services on a photoshoot set. On the contrary, I work with everyday men and women to hone their personal image through style. Aside from paying a fee, we consult about your personal style, what impact you hope to make with it and how we go about achieving that. Sometimes it’s through personal shopping, or closet optimization, or a complete overhaul. I’ve helped women who have been in the same job for 6 years without promotion, rework their wardrobe to be seen, more confident and ultimately promoted. Style isn’t just shopping, it’s a tool that can be used well beyond that. QSM: I have a feeling that we are going to be doing some more work together. You are amazing and I am a huge fan of your work. Please do tell people where they can see more of your work and possible reach you for your services. Please do keep being great Corrinn. Corrinn: You are certainly inspiring. Thank you so much! I’m looking forward to working together. I’m sure that we will create something magical that your readers will love. Please follow me on social media @beautyboxstyle! My website is www. beautyboxstyle.com. There you can see more of my work, book services, learn more about my background as well as signup for my emailing list!

Dorothy In the Wiz, we see Dorothy as this unseen, unheard, 24 year old who hasn’t traveled outside of a 10 block radius her entire life. Even as she is dropped into Oz she is still fearful, skeptical, self-doubting and self-sabotaging. She is however willing to meet new friends, help them reach their goals and dreams and fight their battles for them; all the while putting her needs and safety last. As the “fat friend” who is often unseen and unheard, a lot of visibly plus women have this mindset that friends and family deserve to live their wildest dreams but because they aren’t the “usual visual aesthetic their dreams, wants and desires are invalid. NO, its beyond time for plus women to follow their own “yellow brick” path to success and happiness without fear or sabotage.

Ms. One represents the journey we all take whether visibly plus or not to finding “home”. There’s a necessary safe space that we owe it to ourselves to create in order to have the confidence to move forward in life. This safe space often looks like a girl tribe of women who empower, correct, uplift, inspire, activate, mobilize and hold us accountable for our dreams. They don’t allow us to just fall into Oz and stay in one place. They listen to our dreams, desires and goals and they help us see them through. Sometimes as women we get lost in the competitive state that comes natural to us and we miss the opportunity to forge genuine connections and relationships that can help us heal, grow and become more powerful as women. Move past that, adopt a genuine collaboration over competition approach and find your “home”.

Lion
The Lion is known to lack courage. In fact his storyline is the most memorable because he is in essence is being the very opposite of what everyone expects him to be. This character represents what I would call the “corporate titan”. The visibly plus woman in her office setting who lacks the courage to wear her naturally kinky hair, who changes her voice in meetings, who only wears neutral colors, who doesn’t wear a pencil skirts because you think your curves are “too sexy” for the workplace. I commiserate with you, because I too was that women, and I too lacked the necessary courage to boldly be who I was in an environment designed to strip all that makes you magical away. I challenge you to slowly but surely gain the courage to take your identity back. Be the woman you really are unapologetically. You’ll sleep easier at night. I definitely do. Eveline’s Henchwoman
In The Wiz, the best character arc goes to the “Motorcycle Monkies” a.k.a. Eveline’s Henchman. Once prisoners of Eveline’s she turns them into her henchman to go out and do her dirty work. Once she is annihilated by Dorothy, we see their demeanors change and they quickly become allies of Dorothy and her friends. I’m truly thankful for Carmelita’s willingness to play a “monkey” but I see the importance in this message because of the amount of times I’ve seen or heard similar narratives from other visibly plus women. “Hurt people, Hurt people.” A lot of times we run into women who have the seemingly “mean girl” demeanor and we assume it’s just because they are that way, but what we don’t realize is their actions are normally the result of them projecting their own setbacks or personal idiosyncrasies onto another person. I believe that seconds chances can literally change the trajectory of someone’s life and if we are willing to not take a person’s issues personally and hold them accountable for how they’ve wronged us, we too can have a transformative experience and move forward happily as allies for people.

Scarecrow The most powerful thing we can believe is what we say about ourselves. The scarecrow’s imagery is so impactful because it pictures Jay standing in front of a wall chocked full of media opinions, ideas, declarations and headlines. In life we can easily believe what is often said about us as visibly plus women, that we’re lazy, or that all of us are unhealthy, or ugly, or unlovable, or just a fetish etc. etc. etc. Or we can change the narrative and speak life, light and love ourselves. IAmDivaBigg did an incredible job with the graffiti collection. Creating pieces that constantly reminds us who we really are with printed sayings like “I’m not pretty for a big girl” or “my fat is not a flaw” are constant reminders that we are beautiful just because and that is how we should live. In The Wiz the scarecrow needed external validation for the intellect he already possessed. I’m inclined to believe the empowerment, love, boldness, acceptance, strength, identity, etc that we are searching for, we already possess. We just need to tap into it. Tin Woman
The Tin Woman tells an all too familiar story of navigating life without heart. When we aren’t driven by passion our lives can be mundane and without purpose. As a visibly plus woman, it is easy to fall into this space because we are often told we are not good enough for our passion; that we should accept what is allocated for us and that if we want more, we should lose weight. But what about the now? How can we live a more fulfilled, passionate life that is intentional and full of heart? Boldness. Having the audacity and the heart to be seen as we are, as we transition and by living passionately in and on purpose. Whether it’s wearing the pieces that frighten you, or taking the promotion where you’ll be SEEN and HEARD more; these are the that help up to be bold hearted.

Glinda the Good Witch is the true representation of EMPOWERMENT. I’m not ashamed to say that the song “If You Believe” still makes me cry. But for good reason, there’s something magical about igniting a belief in self and your own abilities. The world is always receptive of a creative, whimsical, fat woman with random knowledge about things that most don’t care about, but it works for me. It always has, and in those times that I waver and feel my courage to be waning, I borrow a page from Glinda’s book and get back on track. My message to all visibly plus women is to do the same, I know it can be hard to truly embark on your own ‘yellow brick” road to living wit passion in and on purpose, loving self, not being a mean girl or being affected by one, and furthermore just realizing your own magic, but it’s a necessary day today practices that has GREAT REWARDS like: acceptance, love, empowerment, strength, boldness, identity, and life more abundantly. Influential –Cardi-B When we think Influential, we think of someone who’s “larger than life” in the views of many and who has made a strong impact on many lives. Well, you are right! Many years ago influential people would be someone who is very prominent, noble, and dedicate to work of helping lives. Yes, this definition is still true, but with the change of social media “influential” people are now the girl and or boy next door or the person whose constantly making small changes in their lives, and/or the reality stars whose brave enough to be themself regardless of the negative impact they may face. I am a huge fan of Love and Hip Hop! The show gives me life! Now, we know many celebrities may be on the show for fame or view time and not thinking to look to be influential in someone’s life. Since the viewing of Cardi-B she has been vocal, determine in pursuing her career as an artist, and pushing through many barriers to remain on top of her career. Since Cardi-B becoming a visible eye on MTV Love and Hip Hop New York who would of thought she would have soar so huge as she is today. Cardi B has been a dominant force in her music, outspoken for her career, fashion, and staying true to who she is. Cardi B’S Fashion has changed the game of styles, trends, and looks in today’s fashion world. Her intrigue detailing to designs are so careful manicure of how well the outfit looks on her. When she wears certain designs the flare of the arms are so flattering. The length of her dresses that grace the ground looks like spill liquid that is so memorizing to see. The silhouette of clothing that frames her body is almost pass perfection. She is not afraid of matching literally from head to toe with vibrant and loud colors that alarms the attention of every eye. Rather she is in the room, social media, her dominant of fashion demands the attention. She isn’t afraid to go from Chanel to Fashion Nova. Cardi-B’s music like her fashion is very descriptive to perfection. Her music is a sorcerer that directs the attention of your hearing. She has such a powerful voice when rapping and soprano voice when delivering her thank you speech. Cardi-B’s music speaks for the today’s women and how many can relate. Overall Cardi-B is an influential to all because she’s able to be herself, present a confidence of being who she is, and just being a woman of change. KEEPING YOUR COOL IN A STRESSFUL INDUSTRY .

KEEPING YOUR COOL| BRANDPOINT
Ashley and Andy Williams of HGTV’s “Flip or Flop Fort Worth” are well acquainted with stressful work. The two military veterans, who were stationed overseas in Baghdad, are now running a real estate business in Texas. “There are few things more demanding than the rigors and demands of the military, and there always seems to be more responsibilities than time or resources, but nonetheless, the job needs to get done,” said Andy. “Those are the exact skills that we use in our current role as designers, real estate entrepreneurs, veteran advocates and parents.” The Williamses offer the following tips, gained from their military background and real estate experience: 1) Start with supplies: “Most days in our family start early and end late,” Ashley said. “The key to managing it all is like how we operated in the military - remaining organized, well-supplied and strategic. Whether we’re researching a new project, designing one of our completed homes or running around with the kids, we always ensure we are well-supplied with healthy snacks like almonds.” 2) Organization is optimal: “In addition to being well-supplied, organization is key. We take the time needed to make sure our kids have their taekwondo uniforms or sports gear packed (depending on which day of the week it is). We also properly coordinate our daily schedules,” said Andy. “As our day-to-
49
day is constantly changing, we must be prepared for the inevitable business opportunity or impromptu project demand. Whether it is a project manager or contractor calling for an on-the-spot decision, or a supplier texting us during our morning runs - flexibility and adaptability are requirements for staying onschedule and keeping each real estate and design project on target and under budget.” 3) Strategic snacking: “Lastly, we must remain strategic in what we’re doing and where we’re placing our energy,” Ashley said. “Being able to mentally focus on each decision and task, as well as having the physical energy to move at a frantic pace, is paramount. It’s not uncommon for us to leave a meeting in Dallas and have a call scheduled during our 40-minute drive to pick up the kids, and then on to the next event. During a day like that, which is most days, there is no stopping for lunch. This is where our weekly meal planning must be on point. It is also why in between calls in the car or waiting for our next appointment, we always make time to power up with almonds, which are a convenient, portable snack to have handy on-the-go.” Efficiency and productivity are a way of life for Ashley and Andy. “It’s not just what we do - it is who we are,” said Ashley. “It allows us to be successful, happy and continue to thrive in our fast-paced lives as parents and real estate entrepreneurs.” BRANDPOINT
