FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the December 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Normally, I would be saying that it feels like just last month we were screaming Happy New Year. But not this year. Unlike previous years, this has been a long one. Nonetheless, the holiday season is amongst us. A lot of us have been saying that we could not wait until 2020 was over in hopes that 2021 will bring us closer to normalcy. 2020 was hard. We lost a lot of our family and friends due to the pandemic. If we learned anything this year, we learned that life can dramatically change within the blink of an eye. Most of us learned to pivot our ideas, businesses and life during these crazy times. Allow me to encourage you all to continue to pivot, continue to grow and continue to study your crafts. Don’t waste precious moments doing absolutely nothing. Find what you are good at, find what you like and LIVE IN YOUR PURPOSE. I want to wish you all a very happy, safe and prosperous holiday season. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. Without your love, support and contributions we would not still be here. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

HOLIDAY REDS | LALA SANYANG

9

Our 2020 Holidays are fast approaching and I suspect this year’s gatherings will look a little different. However that does not mean you should not look glamorous stepping into the Holidays. Many of us have been the house all summer and this Holiday give us the opportunity to experience the Holiday Reds. The Beauty and magic of a Red Lipstick. Red is like a nude it’s just a matter of finding the right shade of red for your skin tone. Let’s take a look at the different undertone in Red lipstick. You have your Cool Reds such as your Watermelon and Cranberry colors, then you have your Warm Reds such as your Terracotta and Tomato Red. Fair skin complexion work well with the cool Reds such as a Cranberry color. Medium tone skin can pretty much get away with any shade of Red and you’re darker complexion should lean towards more of a deeper rich Red. Have a little fun and try on some Holiday Reds. I recently took a trip to Sephora and they are now providing samples to customers in a safe manner. A great option to find your match. Stay safe, safe healthy and stay beautiful.

Ashleigh E. Ashleigh E, two time winner of plus size model of the year by Mercedes Benz Fashion styles. Owner of Arbitrary performance and creative arts agency. Host of The Curvy Conversation live podcast and Co- Owner of A sip of Taste. She has been modeling for only 6 years and she has had the opportunity to be signed to one of the biggest Pacific Northwest Modeling agency, Sports lifestyle Unlimited as one of their first plus models. She has worked bi-coastal for a diverse list of designers, ranging from sports, glamor, editorial, and street wear. She has walked in over a dozen different fashion shows. With all of that she has had the honor of experiencing in such a small amount of time, one thing she recognized that is missed is true mentorship, and geographic opportunity for true talent. Which is why she found a team that could create platforms indirectly and directly to bring awareness to the creative/ performance industry. Be looking out for the upcoming launch of Arbitrary first production Dreams versus Reality.

MODEL SPOTLIGHT | ASHLEIGH E.

QSM: Well hello beautiful. Who is Ashleigh? Ashleigh: Shoot, Who knows. A young woman trying to get everything that was destined for her. If you want details you are going to have to buy the book. QSM: You and I have crossed paths a couple of times. No matter where I have seen you, you are always quiet and humble. What do you do for a living if you don’t mind me asking? Ashleigh: See, that is the assumption that I am quiet. WRONG!!!! I am just observant until I know my surroundings. To make a long story short I do a little bit of everything that has to do with branding, PR, and marketing. I have my master’s in marketing and project management. Yet, my main career is Modeling. QSM: What are some things about Ashleigh that people would be surprised to learn? Ashleigh: I started modeling professionally only 7 years ago. QSM: Where did the idea of becoming a model come from? Ashleigh: I’ve always desired to do it, since my mom did it when she was younger. But she would not let me do it until I finished school. The desire and action of it was ignited by a woman name Becky Jarvis and her consignment show. QSM: How long have you been modeling now? Ashleigh: 8 years total, that is inclusive of childhood images.

13

QSM: What is it about modeling that you love the most; that thing that makes you keep coming back to it? Ashleigh: It’s ability to take a simple garment and bring it to life. It allows you to become a different character that is needed to sale the item. Honestly, that might be the downfall and the bliss of it. QSM: Let’s talk about your company Arbitrary Performance and Creative Arts Agency? Tell us about it. Ashleigh: Listen, this company is and was my baby. However, my baby that I have to say, I was not ready for. Even with every inch of enthusiasm, confidence, independence, I quickly learned you need more than heart to execute a whole company. Then Corona virus helped with that tremendously. QSM: You are also the Host of The Curvy Conversation live podcast and Co-Owner of A sip of Taste. That sounds interesting. Share the deets. LOL Ashleigh: Girlll, you need all the 411 lol. However, The Curvy Conversation is a nonprofit live podcast that is under Arbitrary. It allows people to watch live interviews of influencers of all industries, and representatives from the creative world that have found successes in their industries, despite any challenges. It gives the big wigs the opportunity to indirectly inform the upcoming talent, how to curve their industry and personal issues. Sipoftaste is my fiancé and I house brand. I’ll let you know about that later.

and body passivity it is just an opportunity to do the exact opposite. Clearly you see I am tired of it!!!! QSM: I appreciate your honesty. I really do, and sad to say you are not the first to express these feelings. But let me ask you, what contributions do you feel you make to the modeling industry and what are two things that you like to see change? Ashleigh: Truth is what I bring!!! Modeling is more than selling clothing. It is the ability to have mental, emotional, physical, and business technique/strategy that beats the odds. One thing I can say in 2020 people just want to see if you are brand-able, and how many doors you can kick down. I would love the industry to change the need to divide models in categories according to size, while letting the talent to be the focus. MENTAL AND BUSINESS ETHICS TO BE INTRODUCED AND EDUCATED FOR THE TALENT. Too many times there are new representatives that sign but have no idea about contracts, the type of model they are signing to be etc. Since there is not an actual tracker or steps to of how to be a successful model, without large amount fees that beginner models can’t afford. This what the heart of Arbitrary is here to help the less fortunate.

QSM: You received the plus size model of the year award twice by Mercedes Benz Fashion styles? That is a huge deal. Congratulations. That must have been a memorable moment for you Ashleigh: Yes and No. Because it is a wonderful accomplishment. Don’t get me wrong, it feels amazing to be able to lead an industry in your community. However, it is also proof that it is just a title that your community has never had no intentions to see you fulfill. Because in the Pacific Northwest, if you are not a mixed, indigenous, or Caucasian that is either sex driven, binary, gothic, or a part of the inclusive size range of 23-30. You are not supported as much. As much as the “plus, inclusive modeling” industry screams less segregation and more inclusion

QSM: What are your ultimate goals as a model? When you can no longer model for whatever reason, what accomplishments would you want to have made? Ashleigh: Live. Inspire, and build. To see myself in Paris and walk the runway in designer clothing’s that only children dream of, my face on cover girl, and to have a house brand that meets the need of the whole person. Many of the businesses I’m involved are small pieces that are a part of the world entertainment. My goal is to meet the whole need. Modeling will always be a part of me, it saved me. So there isn’t a backup plan. There is a continuous plan. QSM: What advice would you give if approached by another model for advice on how to get into modeling? Ashleigh: Be ready to walk in truth, confidence, and work ethic before setting yourself on any magazine cover. QSM: Thank you for your time Ashleigh. Remind everyone where they can follow you for updates and bookings. Ashleigh: ashleighelizabethc, curvyconversation, iamarbitrary, sipoftaste.

It’s finally Holiday Season,

and although this year looks very different, we can still look cute even while reminiscing about our holidays past. Whether home alone on the couch or out spending QT with family, these party styles should give you the inspiration needed to slay on any scene this holiday season. What’s in the season? I am getting a real 80’s vibe by the trends that are hot right now. Leather is everywhere this season, and we can dress it up with a skirt, sheer top, and heel or down with a two piece suit and bomb sneaker, and be the talk of the night. Faux leather, Faux fur, sweater vests, you name it, and it’s in. It seems like sequins never go out of style, walk in with a shimmery little number and all eyes will be on you. A sequin party dress or top will be your best friend paired with just the right accessories to seal the deal. Colors, colors, colors are also hot right now, so don’t be afraid to step out with all of your color-blocking boldness. Sheer kimonos, two-piece, and three-piece sets are to die for this season, so grab a hot look from your fav brand or designer and let what you will wear be the least of your worries for the holidays. Whether you are stepping out to a small gathering or just to your living room this season, step out in style.

FINDING HOLIDAY HAPPINESS WHILE YOU ARE STILL GRIEVING

The holidays are hard for many, me included. This year will be my third holiday season without my father, who passed in October 2018. Growing up, I would go to my family’s birthplace of Trinidad to celebrate the holidays and visit my grandparents. We would stay up late, listening to Christmas songs (the calypso version) and parang, and baking. As I got older those trips ended, my grandparents passed away, and

my parents divorced. However, my dad always talked about the holidays in Trinidad, and when I visited him, we would listen to Christmas calypso. As he got older, my dad wasn’t able to go to Trinidad for the holidays as much, but a tradition he created was sending family and friends Christmas calendars. At first, I thought it was strange, but cute. I wish I was still getting those calendars today.

Here is what has helped me the last few years: • Remember those traditions and decide if you want to keep them or change them in memory of a loved one. If you want to get rid of traditions all together, that’s fine too. • Whatever made them smile, use that to make you smile. That may include cooking their favorite meal or listening to their favorite song. • Journal your thoughts and feelings. Relieving yourself of that grief, even for a moment, is helpful. • Decide ahead of time how you want to spend the holidays and stick to it. It’s one of the few things you feel you have control of during the grieving process. Yes… grieving is a process. • Whatever you do, do not feel guilty if you feel happy! It does not mean you miss your loved one any less. They would not want you crying during what’s supposed to be a happy occasion anyway. Know they are watching over you and protecting you. There’s a saying that time heals all wounds, but grief is forever. As much as the lack of my dad’s physical presence hurts, knowing he will always live in me makes me happy, and proud to be his daughter.

Dr. Janelle Simmons

Dr. Janelle Simmons, also known as “The Curvy Doc” is a published plus size model, author, speaker, and pageant queen. Born in Brooklyn, NY, with Trinidadian roots, she is the youngest of seven children and is now living in Raleigh/Durham, NC. She has a Bachelors of Arts in Social Sciences Disciplinary and Masters of Social Work from Stony Brook University, and a Doctorate in Higher Education and Adult Learning from Walden University. After working in the higher education arena for fifteen years, Janelle decided it was time to step out of her comfort zone and try something different. At the suggestion of her sorority sister (Janelle is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.), she decided to pursue modeling, quickly becoming a model and brand ambassador for Moni B Cosmetics, and began modeling for brands such as Designs by DeAngelo and Elegant Evenings. In March 2017, Janelle was awarded the Beauty and Barbers United (BBU) Award for Model of the Year-Plus Size. After her modeling success, Janelle again took her friends’ suggestions and entered the world of pageantry in 2016, competing in the Ms. Full-Figured NC pageant, where she placed 1st Runner Up, was crowned Ms. Photogenic, and was awarded Ms. Social Media and Rising Star. In April 2017, Janelle competed in the Ms. Full-Figured USA pageant in the Exquisite (ages 40+) category. In 2018, she won the title of American Beauties Plus Woman and is currently Queen Eminence of the National Sorority Pageant. Janelle has taken her body positivity message to new heights with the release of her book, Waist Does Not Equal Worth: the Curvy Doc’s Guide to Positive Self-Esteem. Through sharing her personal stories, Waist Does Not Equal Worth provides seven tips on how to change your mindset from selfhate to self-celebrate. In addition to Waist Does Not Equal Worth, Janelle is co-author of pageant anthology She is the Ish: Crown Me Queen and is the fashion and lifestyle editor for Queen Size Magazine. Janelle’s work promoting body positivity earned her the 2019 ACHI Magazine Woman of Inspiration Award. In her spare time, Janelle loves to travel, spend time with family and friends, teach English online to kids in China, and listen to music.

QSM: Were you born in Trinidad or here in the states? Janelle: I was born in the states, but my accent would say otherwise…LOL. I am the only one of my siblings born here. My parents and siblings were all born and raised in Trinidad. QSM: The saying” time heals all wounds, but grief is forever” couldn’t be any further from the truth. My father died over 30 years ago and the pain still hits me from time to time. It gets easier to deal with but it doesn’t go away completely. Tell us about your relationship with your dad. Were you a daddy’s girl? Janelle: My dad was my buddy! I don’t think I was a daddy’s girl, but there’s a huge age gap between my siblings and I so it may seem that way. I learned so much about my Trinidadian heritage from my dad; we used to go to Trinidad together for Carnival back in the day. He always paid for my costume. We spoke every day and would spend hours with him when I was in NYC to visit. I also learned about horse racing from him and used to go with him to the racetrack. My dad was always very proud of me. A photo of me from Trinidad carnival was his phone screensaver, and he would laminate and send articles of my achievements to friends. Unfortunately, I had no credits for image - top left Photographer | Timothy Bowser @mrtimbowser Model | Janelle Simmons @janellethecurvydoc MUA | Charity Dunn @makeupbycd Nails | Azia Harris @aziabssalon Set Design | Lillian Simmons @lilly_43, Ayesha Simmons @ eishebabyyy, Sydney Simmons @sydn4y Dress: Glo’s Glam Closet, LLC by Gloria Marie (FB) @ glosclamcloset

idea he did this until after he passed. He had a religious lanyard that he wore; he gave me the same one. I now have both of them in my possession; they hang over my bed. QSM: I remember when your dad passed; feels so recent. Do you believe in grief therapy? Did you do it? Why or why not? Janelle: I strongly recommend it. I don’t think I would have made it without grief therapy. I harbored a lot of guilt because I felt I could have done more for him when he was alive. There was a local hospice that provided ten free sessions to anyone in the community; they also offered free group counseling. I took advantage of that and was very pleased with the experience. QSM: Sometimes when people lose loved ones it’s hard for people around them to find the right words to say. What would you say is one the worse things a person could say to another grieving person? Janelle: Saying “the pain will go away” is one of the worst things one can say, in addition to “he’s/she’s in a better place”. I understand the intent behind that statement, but it’s not very comforting. credits for image -top right Photographer | Timothy Bowser @mrtimbowser Model | Janelle Simmons @janellethecurvydoc MUA | Charity Dunn @makeupbycd Nails | Azia Harris @aziabssalon Set Design | Lillian Simmons @lilly_43, Ayesha Simmons @ eishebabyyy, Sydney Simmons @sydn4y Dress | Badgley Mischka @badgleymischka Shoes | JC Penney @jcpenney

QSM: Let’s talk about some of your suggestions. How do you celebrate the holidays now? Have your continued your father’s traditions? Why or why not? Janelle: As my dad got older, he didn’t really celebrate the holidays. I sent him a card filled with lots of love (there was something in the card LOL) and I would receive his holiday calendar. If I was in NYC, we spent time together with the other siblings and family. I’ve considered not sending holiday calendars, but a holiday photo, starting with this year. I have many to choose from now (wink). QSM: Feeling guilty. I recall a period after my dad died that I would stop myself from laughing just because I felt like being happy was me forgetting about him. Have you gone through that? Janelle: I haven’t because I know my dad would want me to be happy. He’s vividly in my dreams a lot, smiling. Sometimes when I wake up, I say, “I’m so happy to see you but I’m not ready to go just yet.” QSM: To your recollection, what is the best gift you’ve received from your dad? Janelle: Knowing he was proud of me was the best gift ever. QSM: Let’s talk about your Christmas list. What’s on that list this year? Janelle: A vacation. And lots of money. QSM: Thank you for this Janelle. I wanted to talk about this because a lot of us have dealt with some great losses this year. When you are going through the motions of losing someone you love, it can feel like you are drowning; like you will never be able to breath normally again. The holidays can be especially tough. But it helps knowing that you are not alone in these emotions. Final thoughts? Janelle: I know it’s difficult with the pandemic, but do not spend the holidays alone. If there is one person (COVID-free) that you can spend time with, do so. Zoom, FaceTime, etc. is the next best option. Also, check in with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. You’ll be surprised to know how many people are struggling; you’re definitely not alone.
