Welcome to the February 2018 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Although this is our February issue, we released it January first so allow us this time to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year. 2017 brought some ups and some downs, I am blessed to be able to say that we have had more ups than downs. We were blessed to be able to collaborate and sponsor some major brands in 2017. This issue is our 75th issue! I cannot believe that we have made this far when so many people told me in the beginning that the magazine would not last a year. We announced our new ambassador for the 3rd year, which is this issue’s cover model. We are also about to launch our house model search for the 2nd year now. Running a magazine is a lot of work, but I love it. I could not imagine NOT doing it. I am looking forward to what 2018 has in store for us because I have a feeling that this is going to be a ground breaking year. Stay tuned. “Build your Brand! Believe in your Brand! Respect your Brand! Feed your Brand!” As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail. com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP? By Courtney Pennington Reiki Master, Licensed Massage Therapist MSG3480
In this issue I want to discuss the importance of being well rested and the negative effects that lack of sleep can have. I know you’ve probably heard the saying “I can sleep when I’m dead”, but did you know that long term sleep deprivation can lead to an early death, along with many other ailments and illness?
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?
The recommended amount of sleep is 7-10 hours per night. While 10 hours may seem like a lot, if you are currently only getting 2-4 hours a night I bet it would make a significant difference. Studies have found in cases where people are sleep deprived getting five hours or less of rest at night, disrupt the natural sleep cycle causing an adverse change on the process of glucose, and how our bodies convert complex carbohydrates into energy. This disruption over time leads to type 2 diabetes. Besides checking the clock before you go to bed and when you wake up there are other indicators you are not getting sufficient rest. For instances, being irritable or cranky, making poor, rash, or impulsive decisions, lack of focus, poor concentration, and overall fatigue.
WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE
SLEEP DEPRIVATION CAN HAVE MANY NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE BODY.
You may have a hard time focusing because, inadequate rest limits your REM cycle, causing added stress to your brain. Sleeping doesn’t require as much energy, giving your body a chance to regenerate. The more you rest the better the opportunity for you to regenerate. The longer you stay awake during your natural sleep cycle, the more you deprive your body. Deprived of sleep, the body has been found to suffer from, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and inflammation. Being still allows you to recover from the constant strain we put on our muscles moving and sitting every day. “Longer periods of sleep are required to properly restore and rejuvenate muscle tissue, promoting growth, the repair of tissue, and the synthesizing of hormones.
ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP | COURTNEY PENNINGTON
An article I read referenced a study by British researchers, over a period of twenty years, studying 10,000 citizens. Among those people the ones whom slept five hours or less, doubled their risk of illness related deaths. The most common recurring illnesses were cardiovascular.
more rest.
Lack of sleep can impair your judgment, make you more accident prone, and disoriented. Because when you’re sleep deprived you are less alert.
Being comfortable makes a big difference in the way you sleep. Making your bed, putting your clothes away, or organizing your room. Remove distractions from your sleep space, maybe listen to relaxing sounds, or an artist you like, light an incent or candle. Lighting from electronic screens are considered a distraction because they create an artificial glow, making your brain believe its still day time. Turn your phones screen down, and have a dark background for your laptop. Or just turn it off. Set your room to a comfortable cool temperature. Find what makes you feel happy and calm, allowing relaxation for your being.
Along with your alertness being affected, insufficient rest causes an increased release of cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can break down natural collagen in your skin that helps keep your skin firm, causing the skin to be less tight and elastic, develop wrinkles, fine lines, and cellulite.
TALK ABOUT GETTING YOUR BEAUTY REST!
During a period of deep sleep, sometimes called slow-wave sleep (referring to brain waves) human growth hormones are released. As an adult human growth hormone help us to repair torn muscle tissue, creates muscle mass, strengthens our bones, regenerates the skin and combats aging. Getting adequate rest helps you retain information and memories, during the night (whenever you sleep) information you obtained throughout the day is converted from short-term to long term memory. So, if you have a hard time remembering; you may just need more sleep. Being well rested increases your sex drive. Decreased sleep lowers your libido, in males’ insufficient rest leads to a drop-in testosterone production, and people tend to be less interested in sex because of lack of energy, mental stress and muscular tension.
DON’T LOSE ANY SLEEP OVER IT, I HAVE SOME TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR BEST REST YET! Start by going to sleep earlier, and keep a regular sleep cycle. You can track how much sleep you are getting currently by recording your week, marking each day with actives in two-hour blocks.
For example: 9a – Woke up, brushed teeth, started laundry, worked on this article – 11a 11a- Continued laundry, started preparing for work. Took a shower, got ready for work, left for work. 11:45a Arrive at work, set up my space, Greet my first client. – 1p. 1p-… 3p. and so on. Make sure to mark off hours of sleep, then you can more easily evaluate when you’re sleeping and where you could be getting
7
Once you create that plan, stick to a regular sleep schedule that fits your body and lifestyle.
CREATE A RESTFUL SPACE FOR YOURSELF.
Start exercising weekly and daily. Feel free to exercise any time of day, vigorous exercise is suggested but any exercise or activity is good. Eat a healthier diet. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, “Eat the Rainbow.” Clear your mind. You can try meditating at night while lying in bed, if you fall asleep while in deep relaxing thought instead of in a stressful or anxious mind, you may have deeper sleep, and positive dreams. Hope this was helpful! Be well, and have amazing rest! – Courtney P. Please take note. FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR HAIR | CRYSTAL LEWIS
Fall in Love with your Hair
13
by Crystal Lewis, the Hair Doctor
Hello ladies and gents. I pray that everyone has had a wonderful new year. February will be here before you know it; have picked out a hairstyle and color, but you are still not sure if this will be the perfect look for you? Understandable, so let’s go into the shape of your face. Not all cuts are for everyone. To determine your face shape, pull your hair back in a headband or ponytail and analyze what you see in the mirror. Your pretty face should fall within one of six categories. 1. Oval: Forehead may be slightly wider than the chin, and the length of the face is about one and a half times the width. 2. Round: Prominent, rounded cheeks with equal width and length of the face. 3. Square: Prominent jaw and square chin, with forehead and jawline roughly the same width. 4. Oblong: Often confused for the oval face, though an oblong face will have a longer shape that is not as wide as oval — often with a narrow chin. 5. Heart: Wider forehead and cheekbones with a narrow jawline and chin. 6. Diamond: Narrow forehead and jawline with cheekbones at the widest point of the face. So, because this is February we are going to concentrate on the heart shape, and what looks best for them.
THE LOB A long bob that’s all one length helps soften a strong jaw line on heart-shaped faces. DEEP SIDE PART A deep side part brings emphasis to your cheekbones and opens her face up. BLUNT WISPY BANGS If you want blunt bangs, be sure to discuss their width with your stylist. Cutting your bangs at your brows and blending them with wispy layers in the front, but be careful because you don’t want to widen heart-shaped faces any more. If you keep the bangs slightly narrower, you’ll notice the cheekbones, but they won’t be so pronounced. SLEEK CROP Sleek crop looks sophisticated and stylish, but it’s not for the shy. If you have a heart-shaped face and aren’t afraid to show it off, then this is for you. It might bring unwanted attention to particularly pointy chins. Again, as I always say, “you wear the hair; the hair does not wear you.” I hope this helps you out on picking the right style, we will continue the other looks in the future. Remember to drink your water and take your vitamins. I SAY YES Crystal Lewis
Heart-shaped faces are wider at the brow and narrower at the chin, which typically adds up to killer cheekbones. Here, a few guidelines for the genetically blessed. LONG PIECEY BANGS Soft, side-swept bangs accentuate your eyes and draw the focus away from a pointy chin. There’s a sexiness and flirtiness about those bangs that every woman in America wants. Ask your stylist to trim bangs vertically, rather than straight across, and to stop between the eyelids and the brows.

Meet Blessing Tate Our 2018 Face of Queen Size Magazine
Just a few months ago Blessing Tate (also known to many as Brooklyn Tate) graced the cover of our November 2017 issue as the 2017 Face of Kurvacious; a clothing brand for the curvy woman. Well she is back again, now as the 2018 Queen Size Magazine. In October we ran a two month long contest in search of our new 2018 Brand Ambassador. Our 2016 Face of QSM was Ms. Natalie Dawn, and the 2017 Face of QSM was Ms. Meesha Ann. They both upheld their titles with grace and style so this year could be no different. We had many qualified applicants so needless to say the decision for our judges was not easy. In the end there could only be one and that one was Blessing Tate. You can go back to our October 2017 issue to get Blessing’s full story, but let me just summarize what an incredible woman she is. She has tried on and worn many hats, caps and helmets. Let me explain. She is a US Navy Veteran who’s served her country for over five years in the areas of Navigation and Transportation. She also played professional football for 14 years; how about that! Blessing has interned in the areas photography, hair, and makeup; this is where her love of helping people feel good about themselves became a passion. She is now a Master Barber Stylist, Loctician, and Makeup Artist. What else could she possibly do you ask? Well after five years in the military, fourteen Michael only Brown from mp3zherself Photography years of football, and running a barber shop, aPhotographer woman| can look in Model | Amanda Boles Hairisand Makeup |the Done modeling by Model the mirror and want to feel more like a lady; this where came into Sweat suit | Polo play. QSM: How strange is it that we are back here again but in a much different capacity? What made you enter the contest to begin with? Blessing: It’s not all that strange. I think we were already on the brink of starting a great relationship anyway. I honestly didn’t think it was necessary for me enter the contest because I felt like I was already part of the team, but I entered anyway. It’s funny how things have a strange way of playing out. QSM: Did you think you had a shot at winning? Blessing: I believe that all the contestants had a shot at winning because they all brought something great to the table, however from start to finish I honestly did not think it was going to be me. When it came down to the final three, the other two ladies were poised, beautiful, and well respected. I feel like I am still a work in progress… however, I am extremely proud of myself. QSM: How did it feel when you heard your name being announced as the winner? And has it sunk in for you yet? Blessing: I was shocked to say the least. I believe it set in during my more recent day long photo shoot with the QSM team. The amount of planning and creativity that went into making it all happen really made me respect the role that I will play over the next year, and I am extremely excited! QSM: Please remind everyone how long you’ve been modeling. Blessing: I have been modeling in the plus size fashion industry for a little over a year and a half now. QSM: In the short time that you’ve been doing this, what changes would you like to see happen in an effort to make the plus size industry better? Blessing: I think “better” is a personal preference and we all know that for anything to be better, changes have to be made, for some change is difficult. In the short amount of time that I’ve been in this industry I’ve seen so many great things happening within plus size community. Slowly but surely mainstream fashion is now beginning to take notice. From Liris gracing the stage on project runway to major fashion designers and retailers upgrading their plus size offerings, yet still, there is so much more to be done. I can only speak from experience but it would be nice if we can rethink or widen industry standards pertaining to plus size models requirements. Hearing over, and over again that I am too short, does not cut it. How about this, why don’t you shorten the dress and lower the camera. I can rip the runway like any other 5’9 model, if given the chance to. FEATURED STORY
BLESSING TATE| QSM QSM: LOL!!!! Let’s talk about your platform a bit because I know that you use your modeling as a platform to help others; can you share? Blessing: Funny but I’ve always said to myself, if I were to ever become famous I would try my best to help the next person. But for now, there’s CURVES 4 CAUSE. In the beginning of my modeling career I had to ask myself what was going to be the purpose to all of this, and all I could come up with was my obligation to help a fellow veteran, a child in need, or tell another single mother my story and that everything was going to be okay! I came up with this idea because I felt the need to change lives, even on a smaller scale; the same way modeling has helped me. My hopes are to bridge the gap between fashion and community. I am actively working on putting this into place. My first call to business will begin January 2018 with the 100 Dress campaign, where we are offering prom dresses, suits, and accessories to underprivileged students who will be graduating, and attending prom. Proverbs 19:17 “whoever is generous to the poor Lends to the lord, and he will repay him for his deed.”
QSM: What is different in you now as a model vs when you were in the Navy and when you were playing professional football? Blessing: (As I’m laughing to myself) I think we both know what the differences are. OK so yes, I am a tomboy, but modeling 100% without a doubt has made me feel more like a lady. Yes, so I’m still working on that, again I am still a work in progress! QSM: How on earth did you get into playing football though? Blessing: I am no stranger to organize sports. I ran track and played basketball in high school and college. I guess I missed the teamwork and camaraderie I’ve felt from the navy. Even though I hadn’t the slightest idea of how to play football, when I was asked to play, I said to myself “Why not?”. 13 years later, I’m happy I did. QSM: Can you share something about yourself that most people would be shocked to hear? Blessing: 2016 was a very trying year for me. This was about the time I arrived to New York City from Texas. Unfortunately, my circumstances changed and I was homeless with my two children. We wound up living in a shelter for about three months. For me it was a very humbling experience. I went from being strong, black, educated, and very talented, to literally the lowest point of my life. I use this time to reflect and to find myself. I also used modeling as an outlet. Some folks would even ask me “Why I do so many shows?”, the truth is the runway was the therapy, and it took me away from that life, even if just for that moment. One year later, I now live near downtown Brooklyn in my own apartment with myself and my children. What I have amassed in such a short period of time reminds me of my strength and perseverance. Without the shows, events, and features I truly don’t know where I would be. QSM: Take me back to your childhood years and tell me about life growing up for you. Blessing: Making it to my teenage years was nothing less than
29 a miracle. It was hard and because of this sometimes it still is. I lost my dad when I was five and then my mother at 11. I was fortunate, and was adopted by my father’s twin sister. I was the eldest of four biological siblings, so having to be strong was a given. We were all split up between both sides of my family which made it very difficult to see them. I think that’s the problem even to this day. Growing up I felt a wide array of emotions but the three I felt the most were anger, sadness, and happiness. Anger because I felt like no one wanted me, sadness for the loss of both my parents, and happiness because I was blessed to have been raised by my aunt. Honestly, if I hadn’t gone through any of it I would not be the person I am today. I am truly blessed and very thankful. QSM: Is your family supportive of your career choices? Blessing: I would say yes as much as they can be. There’s a lot of dedication and sacrifice of time, energy, and money. I’ve work very hard to get to this point and they have been there with me most of the way. QSM: You have two beautiful daughters; one who loves to model walk and take pictures like mom. Would you be supportive of your daughter joining the fashion industry? Blessing: Actually, both my daughters love to model and have expressed great interest in pursuing careers. I am all for children trying new and positive activities so I would be extremely supportive. I am currently in the premature stages of their involvement. Stay tuned! QSM: What would you like to see happen with the QSM brand during your reign? Blessing: As an attempt to bridge the gap between fashion and community, while keeping in mind that producing a fullfledged magazine is no easy task, I would like it if we can be involved with community projects and outreach. QSM: As a brand ambassador, what changes can people look forward to seeing? Blessing: As I move into my second year of modeling I would love to begin to take on more public speaking roles. While it is important to represent a brand to the utmost, I believe it to be equally as important, to represent yourself and that brand professionally. QSM: You are continuously elevating so what is next for you after this? Blessing: My love for the fashion industry will always begin with modeling however I believe in order to fully understand its dynamics, it is important that you educate yourself on the many roles and responsibilities. More recently, I had the great opportunity to assist in production for Season 12 Atlantic City fashion week. Ultimately, my goal is to put to good use my creative knowledge gained from my seven plus years in studio photography, and Hair Shows. QSM: Well I for one would like to thank you for always being so supportive of the QSM brand. Please let people know where they can follow you? TAKING BEAUTY TO THE STREETS
Makeup Artist Kimberly WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE
TAKING BEAUTY TO THE STREETS| LAWANDA “LALA” SANYANG Hello Queens, in this edition your girl Lala has took Beauty to the streets interviewing Artist Kimberly Rasberry, a North Carolina based MAC Makeup Artist and owner of Exclusive Looks by Raz. Artist Kimberly and I talked about the Beauty industry trends, beauty basics, retail verses freelance and social media influence in the beauty industry. Being in the beauty industry for 10 years and 6 years of that with MAC cosmetics (where she is a third key manager), Artist Kimberly shared that she has seen a lot of changes in the beauty industry over the years. You have your YouTube Artists that has taken the makeup game to a whole different level on how to do makeup. Also there are lot of small companies branching out with lipstick lines, skin care and foundation lines. They’re quite a few celebrities that have also made themselves very marketable in the beauty industry. The latest trends people come to the MAC looking for, she shared, are highlighting and contouring products; it is the most asked for products because a lot of people want that nice crisp beam on their face. Second to that are the wing eyeliners, classic matte lip products and brow products that seem to be staying strong.
33
into the industry verses in the past there were a lot of Gay men who were Artists. Makeup now is not so dragish as in the past, more people want dewy skin or that perfect matte look. It’s very necessary to practice your skills, never be afraid to learn. Once you are in the industry, you have to stay relevant by promoting yourself, promoting your skills, taking advantage of social media and Kimberly loves seeing new artist coming into the business; it makes her strive even harder because she loves the competition. Having done both retail and freelance work the main ingredient is being passionate about the art and loving it; because if you don’t, it will show in your work. In Freelance work your money is yours and there are peak and busy seasons. As with retail you are always working but for someone else, however she a booked Freelance appointments from her retail clients. In 2018 we should continue to expect trends to further evolve such as The No Makeup look, more colors in highlights because people love it. Also more women are opening up to the idea of makeup application. Artist Kimberly recommends five basic products every woman should have in their makeup bag, a good moisturizer, mascara, eyeliner, blush and a lipstick or lipgloss.
With the surge of social media over the last 5 years I asked artist Kimberly how has this influenced the beauty industry and she stated that it has influenced the industry tremendously. People go to YouTube looking for tutorials. An example is Patrick Starr, a former MAC makeup Artist who now has his own cosmetic line with MAC. He gained his stardom in the industry with social media as a YouTuber. A lot of customers come into MAC looking for products that they have seen on YouTube and it drives the sales Market.
What should we expect from Kimberly? Well be on the lookout for her Web Series ”Crime After Crime” where she expands her brand into acting, as character ”Mama Trust” the holder of all information found on Amazon Prime and Fire Stick so please check her out! And you can always booked her for that special Beauty related event.
If you are someone who’s looking to get into the beauty industry here are some basic tips. Be patient, before it was a lot easier to get into the industry but now you have 11 year olds in the industry doing amazing work. There are also a lot of straight males coming
Beautifully created, Lala
Until next time my Queens, you are FABULOUS!!

One of the things that I learned in this industry was to always be prepared. You have to know how to at least do basic makeup for photo shoots and runway shows just in case no one is available. This is how my journey and a self-taught makeup artist began. I started by just helping out with makeup for other models at runway shows then I started to get booked for photo shoots.

I am Unissha McNeil from Raleigh, NC. I began my modeling journey in 2010 which also led me to becoming a Makeup artist in 2013. My first attempt at modeling was in my preteens when I attended modeling school; I tried to be a straight size model with little success due to always being on ‘the heavier side’ and never feeling welcomed. Then one day I got a message on Model Mayhem from Theresa Flatts to do Tropical Divas, and since then I started traveling and have done runway shows and print from New York to Atlanta. Some shows that I had the opportunity to walk in were Tropical Divas 2010 in Richmond, VA, Plus Nite Out 2011 in DC, and Curves Weekend 2012 in Baltimore, MD. I’ve been blessed to have been signed with a couple local agencies in NC, like The Brock Agency and with Theary Sims in Atlanta. I’ve been published in magazines such as Surreal Beauty Magazine, and Queen Size Magazine. I have also written articles for a local magazine in Fayetteville, NC. I love plus modeling; as a model I feel welcomed and accepted, not judged or body-shamed.
37
In 2013 I took a brief hiatus due to having a twin boy and girl but the changes in my body reaffirmed that plus modeling is my passion and that body acceptance should be more wide spread in modeling and mainstream media. Even though I was the same size, I was shaped differently and had more curves. Once upon a time, size acceptance was something I believed I had conquered but it reared its ugly head again. No two women are shaped the same and it is not realistic to look like someone else so I try to eat healthy and do Zumba 34 times a week and take each day one day at a time. Also, I continue to model and this year have done Sister Summit and Southern Women’s Show in Raleigh, NC. Looking forward, I will continue plus modeling and promoting body acceptance through as many platforms as possible. Beauty is not one size fits all!

FIVE WAYS TO SAY I LOVE YOU WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE
5 WAYS TO SAY I LOVE YOU WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK | QSM
41
It’s that time of year again for us to show our significant others how much we love them. Whether it be with flowers, dinner, candy and/or gifts, Valentine’s Day is the day that has been marked on the calendar to illustrate your love. Year after year the celebration can become a bit cliche-ish with doing the same thing over and over again. But let’s face it, not everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day. Those reasons why will vary depending on who you ask. Some people believe that if you truly love someone then you don’t wait until February 14th to show it. Other people believe that it is very commercialized and another way to get people to spend more money than they should. For them it is just February 14th; another day on the calendar, but for others they are willing to ball out on the ones they love. Ladies, love is a two way street and so is Valentine’s Day so don’t always sit back and wait to receive; you have to make your man/woman feel special as well. But you don’t have to break the bank just to say I love you. We polled thousands of men and women on what they like so we are sharing with you the top five ways to say I love you on Valentine’s Day without going broke. We heard the old saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Even if you are a woman that cooks all the time, make it different and special. Try a candlelight picnic at home with your favorite drinks and good conversation with just the two of you. And some after dinner desserts for playtime (if you know what I mean).
Perhaps buy your significant other a nice spa basket and use it on them. If you don’t know how to give a full body message, take a lesson or two so you can ensure that you are making it pleasurable and not painful. Sending them to a spa is a nice gesture but it so much more personal if you are the one touching all over their body, making them feel good.
Everyone is different and obviously don’t like the same things. So while the aforementioned will make some happy, your significant other may not be into it. Some of the men and women we polled didn’t want anything but to see their loved one happy. For those I would say allow them to do what they do for you on Valentine’s Day but don’t forget to take care of them as well. That may or may not equate to sex; this where you have to know your significant other. In the midst of the day/night be sure to give them something to say thank you and I love you.
Remind the love of your life what made you fall in love with them to begin with. Create a photo album and take a trip down memory lane. It would be a great gesture to write a heartfelt letter telling them all the wonderful things you love and appreciate about them.
Set up a nice tasteful boudoir photo shoot for the two of you. It doesn’t need to be a boudoir shoot if that’s not what you are into, but make it something that you know he/ she would enjoy. If they are into sports, maybe make it themed shoot of one of their favorite teams.
These simple gifts are sure to make your loved one happy because we must remember that it’s not always just about us. And if you are single then do something for yourself that you wouldn’t normally do. Valentine’s Day after all is about love and there is no greater love than self love. EVERY BLOOMIN’ THING
Who is Christin Hilliard?
C
hristin Hilliard is a 28 year old mother of 3. She started working in her grandparents’ florist Every Bloomin’ Thing at the age of 13. She literally grew up in the flower shop! About 4 years ago she found herself in a space in life that just felt empty. She prayed and prayed for God to lead her and trusted the process. One day she woke up and decided she wanted to try Event and Wedding Planning & Coordination. Her life was forever changed! She officially launched her business Dolled Up and Planned Out and It took off. Christin said that she is so thankful for growing up in the wedding business industry because It taught her many things. Effective January 1, 2018 the same family floral shop her great grandmother started, that was bought by her grandparents is officially owned by both Christin and her mom. “I love every minute of working side by side with my best friend and can’t wait to continue our family legacy. Being a Wife, Mom, Entrepreneur, and Business owner can be quite stressful but the rewards are so worth it.”

QSM: First and foremost I want to congratulate you on your success. From the age of 13 growing up in the florist, what would you say is the most valuable lesson your grandparent’s taught you? Christin: Thank you so much! Oh, gosh! There are MANY! I think the most valuable lesson my grandparents taught me was finance management. I am so thankful for the tips they gave me and continue to give me! QSM: What did you want to be when you grew up? Christin: My dream growing up was to be a hairstylist. I never ever pictured myself in this business growing up! I knew I would be an entrepreneur of some sort but I never pictured myself where I am at today.
QSM: I remember walking into your store and I felt so amazed. You could just feel the positive vibes; it’s one of those things that is just hard to explain. Has your family’s shop always been in the same location? Christin: This makes me so happy! We strive on everyone feeling great vibes and feeling welcome in our store! Our store has had a few locations in the Cary/Raleigh Area. QSM: Who do you sell to (and how do you get customers)? Christin: We sell to the general public. We do a lot of everyday floral bouquets for any occasion; we also have quite a few corporate accounts as well. We do everything from floral arrangements to custom shirts, cups and gift items to event planning and coordination and of course wedding florals. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE

QSM: Was there ever a time when you left the florist business to go work elsewhere? Christin: Well, kind of. I never really left. It’s a family business so that is never an option (laughing). I did at one point work a few part time jobs but I have to love what I do to go “work” everyday and that was just not the case with those part time jobs. QSM: You said four years ago you felt like something was missing for you. Were you tired of working in the florist business? Christin: I wouldn’t say I was tired of the floral business. I needed to rejuvenate. Sometimes you become stagnant, and I felt like the business was just not what I wanted it to be. My grandparents are used to the old school way of things and I wanted Events and Weddings. I love everyday work but my heart was in designing events from beginning to end. I prayed about It and once we (my mom and I) decided we were going to take on the business I just went for it! QSM: Why event planning? Did you coordinate someone’s event and liked it? Christin: I felt like it was perfect for the direction I wanted to take the florist. I coordinated a few weddings at no charge for a few of our floral brides, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I then went to school to get Event Planning and Coordination certified and I have been nonstop since. QSM: What is it like working with your mom? My mom lives with me and sometimes I just want to hug her really tight. Lol Christin: OMG, I absolutely love working with my mom! She is my biggest fan and supporter! I could go on and on about all she does! My mom hates spotlight so she sits back and handles all the behind the scenes stuff while I network or Coordinate Events. QSM: Now you have children of your own who spend time in the shop with you. Have they expressed interest in getting involved in the family business when they grow up?
Christin: Absolutely Not! My oldest daughter, LaLyn talks about taking over my event planning business but as far as the florist no one has interest..... yet! QSM: What is the hardest part about owning your own business? Christin: The hardest part for me having two businesses to run is the time I am away from my family. I am blessed to have such a strong support system and kids who are understanding. QSM: Are you planning your own wedding or are you hiring anyone? Christin: I got engaged January 6, 2016 (My Birthday) and I set my wedding date for August 31, 2019 because I am my own planner. I am so particular and have an exact vision of what I want; I don’t want anyone but myself held responsible for any mishaps. I have done great though, everything is booked and complete so now I’m down to pulling all the details together which I personally love, but it drives my fiancé Greg crazy! QSM: How many events would you say that you have coordinated so far? Christin: Easily Over 150, honestly I have lost count QSM: How do you handle the bridezillas? Christin: So I am super lucky on this! I have never ever had a bridezilla. Actually I always tend to become great friends with my brides. One of my brides, Candace is actually my Matron Of Honor! I really think because we build a relationship with our couples it allows them to not only relax but fully trust us to handle every detail. We take the time to really get to know them because to me there is just no way I can successfully plan and coordinate your wedding or event if I am not comfortable making last minute decisions that may arise that I know you would approve of. QSM: In regards to the florist and the event

planning, do you only work locally in NC or do you travel? Christin: Oh no! We will travel! I want to travel more for sure! This is a dream and goal I have for us in the near future. QSM: Word on the street is you recently just purchased your first home. Is that correct? Christin: Yes, I am still so excited! The way my life was 7 years ago I never ever imagined this! I can honestly say I am so truly blessed! My fiancé seriously was a gift from God to my children and I! QSM: Business owner, home owner, fiancé, mother…. What’s next for you? Christin: Well, I am hoping for 2018 to network more and build our brand and most importantly start traveling for Events outside of NC, I’m praying for a NY event sometime soon! My fiancé is from NY and I have never been and it’s on my bucket list. QSM: You have accomplished so much and you haven’t even reached 30 yet. What advice can you offer to people who are struggling to figure out their first move? Christin: Prayer and surround yourself with people who have things going for them and are a level or two above you! It’s ok to be “the underdog” ask questions, do research and BRAND YOURSELF! QSM: Keep up the great work and congratulations again. Please tell people where they can find you and possibly work with you.
