There are many different forms of heart diseases that we need to watch out for. (http://www.world-heart-federation. org/cardiovascular-health/heart-disease/different-heartdiseases/#c420) Rheumatic heart disease Rheumatic heart disease is caused by one or more attacks of rheumatic fever, which then do damage to the heart, particularly the heart valves. Rheumatic fever usually occurs in childhood, and may follow a streptococcal infection. In some cases, the infection affects the heart and may result in scarring the valves, weakening the heart muscle, or damaging the sac enclosing the heart. The valves are sometimes scarred so they do not open and close normally.

Hypertensive heart disease High blood pressure of unknown origin (primary hypertension) or caused by (secondary hypertension) certain specific diseases or infections, such as tumor in the adrenal glands, damage to or disease of the kidneys or their blood vessels. EMBRACING A KETO FRIENDLY DIET | STATEPOINT

11

TIPS TO EMBRACE A KETO-FRIENDLY DIET It seems that everyone these days has a friend following a “keto-friendly” diet -- a low-carb eating plan designed to make the body burn fat more efficiently. Developed years ago to control diabetes and then later to treat epilepsy in children, different versions of the keto diet have gained traction as effective weight loss plans, according to The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “One thing all keto diets have in common is that they restrict carbohydrates in favor of healthy fats in an effort to achieve nutritional ketosis -- the state in which your body burns fat instead of glucose,” explains registered dietitian, Courtney McCormick. The experts at the South Beach Diet are now taking a safe, effective approach to keto by offering a keto-friendly plan, and are providing helpful tips to get started. 1. Count net carbs: A keto-friendly diet is based around the idea of net carbs. Limit yourself to no more than 50 grams of net carbs daily. While this isn’t considered a strict keto diet, it follows the keto plan for those looking for assistance with getting started. To calculate this number, take your total grams of fiber and grams of sugar alcohols consumed and subtract that from your total grams of carbohydrates. The resulting number should be within the 40 to 50 net carb range. 2. No beans, legumes or fruits: To keep your overall daily net carbs within a certain range, even good carbs like beans, legumes and those in most fruits are off-limits except for occasional indulgences. Stick to non-starchy veggies only, like leafy greens, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and zucchini.

3. Water is essential: Your fiber intake is reduced on a ketofriendly diet with the elimination of whole grains, beans and legumes. For digestive health and to ward off constipation, it’s important that you drink sufficient amounts of water. “We recommend drinking at least 64 ounces per day on the South Beach Diet Keto-Friendly plan,” says McCormick. “Plus, water keeps you fuller longer, prevents overeating before meals and may boost metabolism if it’s ice cold.” 4. Variety is key: Following a keto diet could put you at risk for deficiencies in micronutrients, including selenium, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins B and C. To compensate, take a multivitamin and stay away from eating the exact same thing each day. Mix it up with an array of lean proteins, healthy fats and a daily serving of non-starchy veggies. Pay attention to changes in your health like hair loss, vision changes, aches, pains or weakness. Simple blood tests can reveal levels of vitamins and minerals. 5. Plan special occasions: Carbs are king at special meals and holidays. Communicating your needs with family and friends beforehand can help you avoid peer pressure and garner support for your efforts. Offer to bring a keto-friendly dish so you’ll be sure to have something to eat. When following a keto or keto-friendly eating plan, do so in the safest, healthiest way possible. Consult your doctor and consider following a plan supported by trusted weight loss and healthy lifestyle experts. Source: StatePoint

MODEL SPOTLIGHT| SASHA ANN LEBERT

My name is Sasha-Ann Lebert and I was born In Kingston, Jamaica. I moved to the states (Florida) when I was 7 years old. When I was in elementary school my mother got me into modeling. I attended John Casablanca in Coral Springs, Florida. From there I learned how to walk, pose, and apply makeup. After graduating my modeling class my mother wasn’t sure of the future of my modeling career. I was a little chubby at the time and wasn’t looked at as much compared those who were of a smaller size. I got into sports in hopes to change how my body was shaping out to be. In the back of my mind I was thinking why I had to grow up like this. As I got older I accepted my body for what and how it is. My body played a big part athletically being the Most Athletic Athlete throughout middle school, high school, and taking my talents to college on a full ride. After graduating college, I got back into modeling to finish what I started years ago. Loving myself no matter how I looked compared to those who don’t look like me. I moved from Florida to New York to pursue my modeling career June of 2018. I’ve been modeling full-time for a year. Within that time frame I have walked at the TCF Style Expo in Atlanta, Georgia August of 2017. I was a showcase model for both Bandelettes and Hanky Panky Lingerie. June 2018 I was a model for Gwen DeVoe’s 10th year Anniversary of Full Figured Fashion Week. It was an honor to be selected for the first time auditioning and for the 10th Anniversary. My overall goal is to continue to spread body positivity as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle while being comfortable in your skin. We all strive to be better individuals and it starts with ourselves.

WIDE CALF BOOTS EDITOR’S PICKS

If you have wide calves like me then you already know the struggle. I used spend so much time and money trying to find the right pair of boots to fit these fat legs of mine. I would fine boots that don’t zip up all the way so I’d have to put my pants over the boot to hide them. Or if the boot has no zipper, I just would not be able to pull them all the way up; which causes them to look like a scrunch boot when it’s not. But luckily I have found my go to brands that always get it right. I know there are other brands that cater to our wide calves but these are the ones that I have tried and can speak on personally. Give them a try and let me know what you think. Or if there are other brands that you think I should try, hit me up and let me know. A Few Brands That We Are Closely Watching in 2019; and so should you! K.NICOLE COLLECTIONS Let me introduce myself... I’m Khia Abanyie CEO of K.Nicole Collections and I started my line because there was a need that needed to be met in the fashion industry. A need to put ALL women (ESPECIALLY curvy ones) into quality clothing that could be interchangeable and well as timeless! I was tired of curvy women being depicted in fashion as women who could only wear those cheap fabrics that fell apart after one use. Even though most of my pieces are solid colors they have the unique possibilities to be dressed up or down! I want women and now men to be able to walk in a room with a confidence that exudes from the very fibers of their clothing. When you look better, there’s a confidence that no one can break! Myself and my team ; which include Tabitha Hill (Head seamstress) and Monique Gilliam are madly in love with what we do and trust me that shows in our garments!

LaShawn DeAngelo Millner is a New York based designer that was born and raised in Eden, NC. He is self-taught and started his career in fashion design in November of 2015. After being diagnosed with Lupus he found it challenging to work a normal nine to five. Not knowing where to turn, he went to the source, God! This lead him to call a relative and tell them he wanted to make them a garment and from there he has not stopped. Being gifted and eager he has thrived and excelled from starting the company Designs By DeAngelo to debuting his very first line at New York Fashion Week. Driven by faith LaShawn knows that through any obstacle he can and will be the designer to empower, uplift and motivate the plus size, full figured and curvy community.

G’WAN BY CHARON “Appearance is essential, but style is what tells the tale.” Charon grew up loving fashion and was lucky enough to work in the hustle and bustle of the fashion world in New York on 7th Avenue for over 15 years. Though she was enthralled by the business she saw that the industry was lacking hip, modern clothing for the plus size woman. In 2008 the company she worked for had to downsize so Charon took that as a calling for her to focus on her passion; which is designing clothing. Being from St. Croix, Charon decided to use the term “G’wan” which means “Go Ahead” in her native language, as the name for her clothing line which; launched In February of 2011. The line started small with brooches, clutches and leather cuffs. The streets began to talk so Charon started to make individual custom clothing pieces for her clients. Through word of mouth the line grew and now G’wan by Charon offers dresses, casual wear,

and glam tees. When G’wan by Charon was launched it was plus size specific, giving contemporary fashion clothing to women sizes 10 and up. Sooner than later the brand became the talk of the town and standard size women where knocking at her door. Now the line carries fashions in all sizes! In May 2014, Charon was one of three designers chosen to show her collection at the 2014 FashionLink VI Fashion Weekend in St. Croix. She debuted her summer 2014 “Dare You” collection with includes summer dresses, rompers and separates. Charon also showed her first ever swimsuit line. Charon has recently opened G’wan Showroom in Newark NJ. She has a full clothing line. She is excited to announce the launched of curated Jewelry, clutches and other accessories from across the globe. The overall goal of G’wan by Charon is to have women experience themselves as a part of the global fashion movement. G’wan by Charon is a fashion brand about empowering women to accept themselves exactly as they are. “G’wan!” “We are all beautiful; we just come in different packages.”

FEATURED STORY

TAZAH My name is Tazah Richardson a plus size model from Washington DC. I have been a working freelance model for 9 years. I have done everything from print to runway to television appearances and I have loved every second of it! I am so grateful for all the accomplishments that I have been able to achieve during my time as a model. Most freelance models don’t have the resume that I have because it is really hard to get quality work without representation from an agency. You have to keep a positive attitude when trying to make it in this business, it is not as glamorous as it may seem. I was born and raised in Washington DC as an only child to a single teen mother living with her parents in a two bedroom apartment. Even though things didn’t come easy for my mother I never knew the pains of hunger, homelessness or neglect. In my eyes, we were rich because I was overwhelmingly loved and wanted for nothing. It wasn’t until I reached my teen years that I realized that we weren’t rich. I learned from my family early that just because we weren’t rich didn’t mean that we carry ourselves without dignity, pride or professionalism. I was also taught early on that my race will play a part in the struggles that I will experience in life and I have to handle them with grace and poise in order to break whatever stereo type I am labeled with. It took me a while to understand why as an African American female that I have to live up to this standard that is not set for everyone but as I grew into adulthood I gradually got the gist. Even though I have come to identify as African American I am predominantly Native American. I do not know much of my ancestry like the exact tribes my family derives from. I only have pictures and stories as references and I just don’t feel comfortable claiming a culture that I don’t know much about which is sad in a thought but I have come to accept the mystery of my heritage and am just proud to be living my dreams in the skin that I’m in. I started two dance programs in the DC area for Shaw Jr. High School (Dazzling Divas) and Cardozo High

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2019 ISSUE

School (Essence of Diva) which I am extremely proud of. Teaching and coaching the youth is another passion of mine. Growing up I had very positive role models in my life that attributed to my current success. I want to do for my girls what others did for me. I was deserving of that mentorship and so are they, so who am I to not provide that. So many people say that they want to make a difference in the world but don’t lift a finger to change the conditions. My dance programs are my way of contributing to the world I would like to see. I influence these young ladies to be positive influences in their communities to ensure that it doesn’t just stop with me but that they are in turn encouraged to do the same thing for others that will come after them. If you put positivity into the world you will get it back. I teach them to pass on the blessing and they will forever be blessed. Those young women mean the world to me and it is the most rewarding work that I’ve done in my life thus far. My drive to be successful in modeling is kind of driven by my will to be a role model for my dancers. They all follow me on social media and see all the opportunities that I’ve been blessed with and they are in turn encouraged to follow their own dreams without regret. When they inbox me and say things like “I want to be like you when I grow up”, it really makes me feel good. Or when they are fearless about interviewing for a job or auditioning for something and they say that they were inspired by my fearlessness to follow all of my dreams. It has truly become what drives me to keep pushing for the next level. I always tell my dancers that if you do anything you should strive to do it at the highest level. I strive to be signed by a major agency and to be working consistently for top retail brands because that is doing it at the top level. In my opinion, if you’re not doing it or striving to do it at the top level why even do it? I’m an all or nothing kind of girl, maybe being an only child spoiled me in that way but I have the mentality “if I want it, I will get it”. That’s how I live my life. I recommend it. Speak it into existence and share your knowledge with the next in line and you will be fruitful in all that you do.

QSM: You seem like you were popular kid in school. Were you? Tazah: I was a social butterfly. I was a cheerleader, president of the band, coproduced my high school fashion show and I sang in the school Show Choir! I can probably count on one how many people openly didn’t like me growing up. So yea, I was pretty popular. I wasn’t all that popular with the fellas unfortunately. I was taller than most of them until high school lol, so I get it. They all put me in the friend zone. That didn’t change until I came home from college. Then all of a sudden they all use to have a crush on me lol.

who? If no, what inspired you? Tazah: No one else in my family models professionally but I can say that my first cousin Anthony Bean better known from “Wild-N-Out” as “Chico Bean” the comedian, is definitely an inspiration for me. He keeps pushing and he has truly made it to the big leagues in his career. I strive for the same level of success, and I know that I have what it takes to get there. My model inspiration has been and will always be Sharon Quinn. Her journey on “Monique’s Fat Chance” motivated me to get started.

QSM: What does Tazah like to do for fun? Tazah: I love traveling, live music and socializing but I also enjoy just snuggling up and watching TV too. I’m not hard to please. Most times if you just feed me I’ll be having the time of my life lol.

QSM: As you and I both know, the industry is saturated with models these days. What makes you stand out or different from the rest? Tazah: I struggled with this for a long time. “What is my niche” I would ask myself. I spent a lot of time trying to discover what kind of model I am; if I should wear my hair long, short or natural. Should I shoot more provocative or commercial? Should I lose weight or gain it. The moment I stopped trying to categorize myself was the very moment I started to see progression in my career. So I guess what sets me apart is that I can do anything. I can wear long hair, short hair, natural hair, provocative, commercial, and runway. I am a bit of a chameleon.

QSM: LOL! That’s funny… Tazah, let’s talk about how you first got into modeling. Were you plus size or straight size at the time? Tazah: I don’t have one of those “I used to be so skinny stories”. I have always been on team fluffy so I have always been a plus size model. And I wouldn’t change it for the world. QSM: I hear that! Does anyone else in your family model? If yes,

going to be responsible for your next opportunity. Number THREE: Never forget someone you meet in the industry and what their expertise are. You never know when you are going to need to utilize that connection. QSM: How do you measure success? Tazah: Success is measured by your own personal level of happiness. My personal happiness is what’s most important to me as I have grown and had some experiences. If I am happy then I am living in my purpose and therefore successful. QSM: Great answer. Who are some of the other plus size models (past and present) that have inspired you and why? You can only name three. Yes, I said three. lol Tazah: Anita Marshall is one of my favorite models. She used to be much bigger than she is today and she decided that in order to progress in her career and live her life as she envisioned she wanted to lose weight. I am a strong advocate of doing what makes you happy and it looks like she is living her best life to me lol. Chasity Saunders is another that made changes to further her career. She relocated to LA and has been killing the game ever since. She is truly about her business! Last but not least ANTM runner up Khrystyana Kazakova is such an inspiration to so many models, straight size and plus size. She is in a different country breaking down barriers with “The Real Catwalk”. Bringing inclusivity to all body types! All three women leaped, without looking, into better lives for themselves.

QSM: Tell us about your very first professional modeling opportunity. Tazah: The very first professional modeling opportunity I booked was for BET “The Leading Women Defined Summit” in Washington DC. I was modeling “Jibri”, celebrity MUA Renny Vasques did my makeup and celebrity hair stylist Charlene Brown did my hair. It was also my very first paid job. I got paid $100 and you couldn’t tell me nothing! The who’s who of black Hollywood was in attendance and I felt right at home! That opportunity was presented to me by the woman that gave me my modeling start, Natasha Bryson. QSM: What were some of the biggest lessons that you have learned along the way that has impacted the way that you work today? Tazah: Number ONE: learn how to do your own makeup, even if it’s just the basics. You never know when you are going to know more about makeup than the person doing you face. Number TWO : be nice to everyone. You never know who is

QSM: Who would you say has been THE most instrumental in your growth? Personal and professionally? Tazah: In my personal life I feel like the dancers I coached helped to mold my thought process, how I deal with people and how I digest how they deal with me. They helped me realize that sometimes you have a responsibility to be great for others not just yourself. Someone is always watching. Professionally I would have to thank NCD for all that they have done to help me progress in my modeling career. The connections I have made through being the Face of NCD have been quite beneficial! QSM: What are some of the brands that you have had the opportunity to work with so far? Tazah: I’ve worked with so many great brands but the ones that stick out the most to me would have to be Smart & Sexy, MVP Collections, Gena RoseX, Bandelettes and Eloquii just to name a few. QSM: If you had the opportunity to change anything about the plus size fashion industry what would they be? Tazah: I would only change one thing and that’s the percentage that we represent in main stream media. We are underrepresented in every area of entertainment and media. That needs to change.

TAZAH RICHADSON | QSM QSM: How do you feel about the term Plus Size? Tazah: The term “Plus Size” doesn’t really bother me as long as I receive the same access to opportunities as the next model. QSM: In addition to modeling, you are also a makeup artist correct? Tell us about how you got into doing makeup. Tazah: I am a MUA. I started doing make up in high school out of necessity. I was in the Duke Ellington Show Choir and makeup was mandatory for performances so I had to pick up the tricks of the trade quickly. Now I would prefer to do my own make up than to sit in a strangers chair lol. QSM: Let’s talk about this dancing. How long have you been dancing and what type of dancing do you teach? Tazah: I have been dancing since I was a child. I joined the dance team or the closest thing to it at every school I attended. When I started coaching I taught auxiliary band dance mixed with a little hip hop and jazz. QSM: This is something that I’d have to say took me by surprise. I remember seeing images from an event recently. Refresh my memory on that event because I cannot remember the name of it. I believe there were six of you dressed in red. And you ladies did a dance routine. That was the first I learned of you dancing. Will we be seeing more of this from you? Tazah: That event was the premiere party for the “Curvy Girls Rock” series in NY. We were featured on Ebony’s website. The name of the group is “Figure 8”. We didn’t really expect for this to be a thing but after the response we got from the performance we decided that this might be something to really consider making a serious group. Still in the early stages but you will see “Figure 8” again.

QSM: Let’s just go ahead and set the record straight for everyone who has looked through these amazing images of you and Kyle. Are you guys an item? If not, is there a lucky guy in your life? Tazah: Lol… Kyle and I are NOT an item. Kyle is the homie lol! I can say that Kyle is one of the most down to earth, kindest, funniest, and most reliable people you ever want to work with. He is quite attractive but there is nothing going on between us. So ladies, don’t worry, Kyle is on the market. Make sure that you are following him on his social media IG: @ladiesluvk00lk . As for myself, my love life is complicated. There is definitely a very special someone in my life but I am not really in a position to say much more than that right now. QSM: Tazah, you are beautiful, humble and definitely a gogetter. Keep up the great work. We are looking forward to seeing you on big screens and billboards. Tazah: Thank you! As I have told you before, making the cover of Queen Size has been on my goal list for quite some time and I am honored finally get the opportunity. I can be found on IG (@tazahthemodelvixen) FB (Tazah Richardson or Plus Model Tazah Richardson). For booking contact (Vanzandtmgmt@gmail.com or tazahr.model@gmail.com)

QSM: You are also the Face of National Curves Day; two years running now. How does that feel for you and what does those opportunities look like for you? Tazah: Being named the Face of NCD for a second year is amazing. It’s not very often that you are given a year-long title then informed that you were so successful in your role that they want you to represent them again. I have more covers coming and some crazy collaborations on the way but you guys will have to wait and see all of that unfold. QSM: When you say that you are interested in being signed by a major agency, do you have any in mind? Come on, put it out in the atmosphere; they might be reading. LOL Tazah: Wilhelmina Models, Dorothy Combs, State Models, and IPM are my top choices. I am open to other opportunities but these are my dream agencies. QSM: One of the things that I try to advise people is to set goals for yourself; when you hang up your heels what are the three things on your goal list that you would like to have accomplished? Tazah: I would love to teach modeling, I have a natural knack for it. I also want to open an after school program for the arts and last I want to start a family of my own. I know that I don’t have to hang up my heels to do that but I want to be satisfied with my status as a model before I have children.

A Spark That Created EXTRAordinary Results By: Lorrine Coleman-Ross I pride myself on empowering the women by exuding confidence and maintaining class at all times. My D.I.V.A. stands for determined, inspirational, vivacious and ambitious. With all that being said the journey to my D.I.V.A., was a rocky road. Born into a family where I was one of the darkest and thickest berries of the family tree. My nickname wasn’t the most ideal. You know the one that’s a cute reference to your looks or a shorter version of your names like Reds, Shelly or Crissy? It was nothing cute about my nickname which was “Porky”. It was based off how my family looked at me, a fat little girl who looked like a pig. Imagine growing up with a pink male pig cartoon as your self-image. To top it all off at the age of eight my grandmother and mom had the best idea to bless me with the “Jheri Curl”, so they thought. The aftermath of this hairstyle was days of name calling, back then it was called “joning”, 80’s slang. Although the name calling would hurt I couldn’t dare show it on the playground. I came from a Southeast Washington, D.C. family that is known for not being “suckers” or “crybabies” and at that point my boxing career started. After several meetings with my mom in the principal’s office, at 12 years old Sheila Coleman, my mother, said to me “Enough Lorrine! you’re gonna have to channel your energy somewhere else! People will talk about you no matter what, you’re just gonna have to change what they talk about.” Well...I didn’t listen to my mother right away. So she enlisted new management, my Auntie Teresa Coleman who’s a short feisty woman who was nothing to play with. Let me tell you her boxing career was 13-0... or more. To say the least I found a way to change what people were talking about. Loving myself was one of the hardest things to learn how to do. I was reminded by a great book, the Bible, Proverbs 31:25 “She is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future”. My love for myself came with an abundance of confidence. In junior high school attending Friendship Educational Center that little fat girl was now the cute curvy chick on the cheerleading team, flag girl squad and the Falcon Modeling Troop “All Shapes and Sizes”. Our modeling coach was a 6’4, 350 pound man by the name of Brock. His style, confidence, and charming smile were matched to none. He was the big brother I never had. He told me one day after runway practice, “Lorrine don’t let anyone steal your spark. You’re amazing, beautiful and worthy of the best.” The start of my passion for the fashion industry and working the runway. I participated in well known local fashion and hair shows within the D.M.V. On Saturday, October 30, 1993, to the world, I became a statistic, a teenage mother at the age of 15. Many planned my future for me even those closest to me. They said I would be on welfare, have another child within a year, and would not finishing high school. Looking in my princess’ big beautiful eyes with her future in my hands I knew then, their plans were not mines. At that moment I became my biggest cheerleader. I was my own champion. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2019 ISSUE

Being a champion has its challenges, in the end, I continued to be victorious. I finished high school at Freestate Challenge Military Academy and later earned an Associate’s Degree from Aberdeen Community College. Started my career in customer service as a Manager with Guest Services Inc., holding the position for 12 years with the company. Currently, I work in a male-dominated automotive industry as a Service Lane Manager at DARCARS Toyota of Silver Spring, MD.I am a three-time recipient of the Excellent Service Award and was featured in the article “Women Successful in the Service Lane” in the March 2014 issue of Automotive News Magazine. My passion for fashion never diminished. One late night in 2015 sitting on my sofa watching YouTube, I came across the Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A. Pageant. To see those full-figured beauties on center stage so poised and graceful, I knew I found my calling. After watching the 2015 Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A. Pageant more than twenty times, I took a leap of faith and emailed the CEO of the pageant, Theresa Randolph, requesting information about the 2016 auditions. Ms. Theresa quickly responded with the qualifications and audition dates. A few weeks went past before I talked to my husband of 15 years Eric Ross Jr. about my desire to audition for the pageant. He is immaculate in his efforts to support me in all I do, so of course he said, “Do it!’ after he got over the shock we had to drive to Newark, New Jersey. Audition day arrived; Ms. Theresa greeted me with open arms and the biggest smile. By the time I left the audition, I had a new motto; “Size Has No Barrier On Beauty”- CEO Theresa Randolph. I was not aware of the magnitude of the commitment I was about to make but I did because I knew this was a platform to inspire young ladies like “Porky”. Once I started to attend the monthly workshops I met phenomenal women and became a part of a sisterhood like no other, the United Sisters of America. I traveled to Newark, New Jersey as a delegate in the 27th Annual Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A. Pageant and was crowned Ms. Full-Figured USA Swimwear 2016. I don’t have the ideal swimwear body, but my confidence and grace shine though which won the crown. I hold this category close to my heart because of the underlying meaning to the title, “People will see you as you see yourself so why not show them how FABULOUS you are. Be SIZE CONFIDENT”! A year later I was crowned the Director of the Ms. FullFigured D.M.V. Pageant, I saw this as a great honor. The mission is something I believe in and a key part stuck out to me, which is to “ focus on building self-confidence, empowerment and inspiring others while serving the community.” As a woman who wears many hats the one I hold dearest to my heart is being a mother to my four children Dashawn (24), Ayanna (20), Chalice (17), and Shiheem (15). They have taught me the importance of patience which is something that needs to be transferred in all aspects of my life.

QSM: Lorrine, let’s talk beautiful. I read your story and found it so relatable. I too had the most embarrassing nickname growing up. What did that do to your self esteem growing up? Lorrine: The family nickname for me as a child was very much embarrassing, Porky, a male pink pig cartoon. This name was extremely damaging at a young age I did not view myself as beautiful, not even cute. I became a jokester to deflect the pain of not loving myself and to cover my low self-esteem. As an adult, my goal is to be as transparent as possible with sharing my story for all the “Porky’s”, my story would reach for they would know they are not alone. QSM: I’m assuming you fought a lot in school growing up? Were the kids mean to you? Lorrine: Yes ma’am, my boxing career was long standing on the playground. I didn’t lose many of those matches, however, it wasn’t enough to stop the bullying. Between my nickname and my grade school hairstyle, the Jheri curl both were definitely a target for every bully. So yes they were mean. QSM: One of the things you said that was so true what that you have to change what people are talking about. That is a deep statement. Lorrine: It took a while to understand the way to go about making that change, but I did. People began to talk about how I wouldn’t take crap from anyone and would also give you my shirt off my back. My popularity grew over time in my school days years by being the friend you can count on, performing on the cheerleading squad, being a flag girl, and joining the modeling troupe. I had a new found confidence and no one couldn’t tell me I wasn’t a cute curvy girl. QSM: Is that something you find yourself telling people today? Lorrine: Yes! As the person who is often called for advice, I have to remind my peers that since they are the person people are talking about they have to be the ones to step up and change those perspectives. QSM: Looking at you today it looks like you have done a pretty good job of changing what people are talking about. Lorrine: Thank you QSM, over years of lives trails the conversation of “Who is Lorrine?” has blossomed to great highs of positivity. I put a 100% into everything I do. Working hard to prove to myself first I’m worthy of greatness, allowing me to perform selfless acts of kindness and pour into the growth of others. QSM: Tell us about your very first fashion show. Lorrine: Junior High school model troupe I was 14 years old. We modeled garments created by the students of our home economics classes with pieces of our own clothing from home. Music selections included GoGo (DC), Rap and R & B. It was our model troupe showcase we had formation and dance routines a full fledge urban fashion show. My love for the runway was born. QSM: Good for you for beating the odds. You became a teenage mom at a very early age. That must have been pretty scary. Did you have help with the baby? Lorrine: It’s was a little scary. I was a 15 years old girl who‘s now responsible for a life other than my own. Having my daughter set a fire in me, awakening my endless will of determination. I couldn’t be as successful in the early years of my daughter’s life without the help of my Mom (Sheila Coleman). She was my saving grace, because of her assistance I was able to finish school and work to build a stable life for my daughter. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| FEBRUARY 2019 ISSUE

QSM: How much time went by after watching the pageant on Youtube before you reached out to Theresa? Lorrine: The very next day, I emailed Ms. Theresa after watching the Ms. Full-Figured USA Youtube videos, one in particular, the 2015 pageant I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. QSM: Was pageantry all that you expected it to be? Lorrine: No ma’am, it was much more than I expected. I was expecting to learn a new way to walk, dress and talk on the main stage. I was not expecting during the process I would need to take a good look in the mirror and love every inch of me, because my confidence would be challenged, build a platform and stand firm in my selfworth. My pageant sisters and I bonded as women and grew mutual respect for each other in the journey to the crown. It’s truly a sisterhood like no other. Of course, you have your few who were there to win only, others were there to experience the sisterhood of pageantry under Ms. Theresa’s motto “Size Has No Barrier On Beauty “ Four years later we continue to support each other in everyday life events, birthdays, children’s graduations or just a sister to sister phone conversation. QSM: How did you go from competing to being Director of the Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. Pageant? Lorrine: After I competed in 2016, Ms. Theresa and the Ms. Full-Figured USA Brand team told me I had the drive and determination it takes to be a Director. A few months after our pageant season was over I received a phone call from Ms. Theresa offering me a hosting position for the Ms. FullFigured D.M.V. division launch which included conducting auditions and interest mixers. To say the least, Ms. Theresa and the team were impressed with my performance and dedication to the growth process of a new division, so much so at the 2017 Ms. Full-Figured USA Pageant I was crowned the Director of the Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. Pageant. QSM: So now you have your own girls that you have to now bloom. How does that feel? Lorrine: Responsible, as Director it is my responsibility to ensure each delegate is given the tools to succeed in their journey to the crown. There are several expectations a delegate must fulfill including, learning a graceful walk, having the proper undergarments, and being able to speak with conviction about their contribution to the Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. division as well as the Ms. Full-Figured USA brand as a whole if they are selected as Queen, just to name a few. QSM: Your husband is extremely supportive; which is very important in this industry. Everywhere I see you, I see him. Does he low-key love fashion as well, or does he just love him some you? Lorrine: LOL, he just loves him some me. Eric does love a fashionable sneaker, that’s as far as his passion for fashion goes.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2019 ISSUE

QSM: Are any of your children into the fashion world? Lorrine: All three of my young Queens have their own sense of style. My oldest daughter DaShawn studied fashion merchandising in college. She loves fashion, she spends plenty of time and money on research. QSM: How does one go about competing in the pageant? What is the criteria/qualifications? Lorrine: To compete in the Ms. Full-Figured D.M.V. Pageant please visit our website www.msfullfigureddmv.com to fill out delegate’s registration form to start the process. Each perspective delegate must attend an in-person audition and interview. Base qualification for delegates, be born female, ages 18-60, sizes 12-26, be able to walk in 3” heels, develop a platform, there is no height requirement, no experience necessary and reside in DC, Maryland or Northern Virginia. QSM: What is the most important lesson that you teach your delegates? Lorrine: It’s really a simple lesson and one they have heard before, you are your biggest competition. It is not the woman next to you. Stay focused on your journey to successfully fulfill your goals. QSM: Lorrine, I cannot thank you enough for your time in chatting with me. I wish you continued success. Lorrine: Thank you QSM for this awesome opportunity to share my journey through life challenges and developing my D.I.V.A. which stands for determined, inspirational, vivacious and ambitious. To my Queen sisters, Be your own CHAMPION! You don’t need anyone to tell you you’re a winner! Facebook- Lorrine Ross IG: @ladiross www.msfullfigureddmv.com

LOVE IS IN THE AIR... what do guys really want for Valentine’s Day

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|DECEMBER FEBRUARY 2019 2018ISSUE ISSUE

LOVE IS IN THE AIR | SIR ICON

Good ole Valentine’s Day is coming! And with it the classic marketing that caters to women - more specifically, men buying for women. Ironically, this marketing ploy includes every spectrum of “man” from the Big and Tall male to the LGBTQ individuals who identify as males, in it, without saying it. The real question is, what do you buy men for Valentine’s Day? How much do you have and how much are you spending on lover boy? Sophie Caronello, a journalist for bloomberg.com, stated that last year Americans were expected to spend as much as $19.6 billion dollars pampering their sweethearts. That was about $143 per person. Sheesh, I guess this marketing ploy really works! Buy, buy, buy is what they want you to do, no matter who you are! Let’s do some back history on this money maker! Valentine’s Day origins centralized around two dark and bloody days. In a Smithsonian Magazine article, Lisa Bitel, a Professor of History & Religion of the University of Southern California, stated that individuals with the name, St. Valentines, were decapitated on February 14. They happened on different days, but “during the reign of Roman Emperor Claudius Gothicus in 269-270 A.D., at a time when persecution of Christians was common.” So how did we go from “off with their heads” to “come to cuddle with me” for this day? Bitel says, “The love connection probably appeared more than a thousand years after the martyrs’ death, when Geoffrey Chaucer, author of “The Canterbury Tales” decreed the February feast of St. Valentines to the mating of birds. It seems that, in Chaucer’s day, English birds paired off to produce eggs in February. Soon,

45

nature-minded European nobility began sending love notes during the bird-mating season.” So birds are to blame for this it seems! Now back to reality! Let’s be real! Most guys’ heart palpitates this time of the year. Emotions, discomfort, and dreadfulness are amongst the feelings but let’s flip the script a bit. What do guys want for Valentine’s Day? What are the perfect V-Day gifts for men? Do they exist? I do not believe that a perfect gift exists for men because males are not necessarily inspired by things like candy and flowers that are generally associated with this holiday. A guy’s wish list can be tricky because any gift can evoke the task of showing emotion. That is not a masculine thing to do, right! However, I cannot imagine that some good ole sex would be turned down by any man, but not to stereotype, I did some research. So to better understand V-Day from a man’s perspective, I surveyed a diverse group to determine what men really wanted for this holiday. The group included standard size males, big and tall males, and trans men from different ethnic backgrounds and ages. If you are not sure what your man wants for Valentine’s Day, you might want to go with “nothing!” However, here are few pointers from my anonymously named subjects: Ted, 36, trans man, says, “I do not personally like receiving gifts, but I will always accept a great dinner and some quality time together.” Greg, 24, big and tall man, says, “Getting a gift that was meaningful and thoughtful would mean the world to me. The fact that she bought

something simply because she knew I would like it is hot. Then sex would definitely happen!” Arthur, 49, corporate man, says, “Take me to a hotel room, give me a fist pump, and tell me that we are not leaving for a while!” It seemed that the overall consensus was to have an imagination and be thoughtful with whatever you buy your man. Looks like work will need to be put in to please your big guy. Know him! Study him! Learn him! Then repeat! Our society’s culture and commercialism of Valentine’s Day has created this extremely strict and pressured guideline with an impossible task for women and men to meet high expectations without disappointment. A daunting task for all it seems. Ironically, to play on the original term, “off with their heads” if they do not accomplish such. Now I see the connection! Let’s not over think this holiday, it is simply a day to celebrate love and romance. That’s the Big and Tall of it! ______________________________________ ____________________ About Marco Mays aka Sir Icon He is the paragon of a classy male with sophistication and style. LALA ANTHONY X ASHLEY STEWART COLLABORATION

he plus size fashion industry has made history once again. This time by way of Ashley Stewart and Lala Anthony. We recently reported (on our website at www.queensizemagazine.com) on the collaboration; well it happened and we were there to capture it.

First let me tell you that the line was wrapped around the inside of the store on the top and bottom floors, filled with people standing on line for their chance to meet Lala Anthony. The outpour of support was an incredible site to see. Some will say that people were just there to see Lala Anthony; but whether that is true or not, they still supported because the checkout lines were just as long. It is no secret that Ashley Stewart is one of my favorite brands to shop. I can shop online and never have to worry about returning an item because it doesn’t fit. I love the quality of their clothing and Lala’s collection did not disappoint. What I loved was that there were several models there walking around in some of the pieces; models with a variety of model types. It allowed you to see what YOU would look like in some of the pieces. It made shopping easier. Wait, for those that need to be reminded, Lala Anthony plays the character Lakeisha on the hit show Power. She also starred in Two Can Play That Game and Think Like a Man among other hit shows. She is a Mom, a wife, an actress, bestselling author, and a Broadway star with a background as a Radio and TV show host. She is continuously adding to that resume. In 2017 she launched her new clothing collection with Lord & Taylor for ladies sizes 0-24. Now check her out on AshleyStewart.com serving up her new collection for the curvy ladies. 14-piece collection includes dresses, jumpsuits, tops and bottoms, denim, active wear sets and outerwear in sizes 12 to 32. And the pieces are dope. I just want my body to look like Lala when I put the pieces on. LOL Make sure y’all check out these pieces and support. Head over to www.ashleystewart.com

How to Rekindle the Romance in Your Marriage WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|FEBRUARY 2019 ISSUE

REKINDLING THE ROMANCE | STATEPOINT

Whether you’re a honeymooner or you’re celebrating your 50th anniversary, there’s a chance that the romantic spark that brought you and your partner together in the first place needs to be rekindled. Experts say that a continually fulfilling relationship requires establishing and maintaining a complete connection. “Marriage is more than a wedding and a license, it’s a psychological, emotional and spiritual sense of connection,” says Dr. Frederick D. Mondin, a marriage counselor, human sexuality professor and author of the new book, “Erotic Love & Marriage: Improve Your Sex Life and Emotional Connection,” which offers insights on the issues that almost every relationship struggles with, as well as solutions that highlight connection, communication and exploration. Dr. Mondin is sharing tips and insights to all couples seeking to connect or re-connect with one another. • Keep dating: No matter how busy you become, you should never stop having the kind of fun you had when you were courting. Whether it’s hiking beautiful trails, going to concerts, or giving and attending parties, these activities should be carried into any longterm relationship if you intend to have a meaningful romantic life together and a healthy emotional connection. • Take each other seriously: Don’t allow gender stereotypes to lead you to discount each other’s feelings or opinions as irrational. You’ll communicate more effectively, and be happier as a result, if you listen to your partner and take him or her seriously. In other words, there should be no “boss” in the marriage. Work at maintaining a peer relationship. • Ritualize contact time: Couples need ritualized contact time in which they get together, such as going

49

to lunch once a week, having coffee together in the morning or watching a television program they both like. This is one of the most important components of having a close, emotionally intimate relationship. • Speak the language of love: Emotional intimacy has its own language, the language of endearment. Focus on all the right features of your partner -- the personal qualities you saw when you first met and still appreciate, and start to verbalize that information. If your partner reciprocates, it will create a feeling of closeness. These words don’t have to be rational or logical, but they should always be a validation of the relationship and your partner. • Lose your inhibitions: Be open with each other about everything -- including sex. Unfortunately, lingering guilt, fear and shame on this topic prevent many couples from being candid with one another. Learn to lose those inhibitions so that you can share your needs, desires, feelings and concerns. • Give each other space: You don’t need to do everything together to have a happy relationship. In fact, the happiest couples tend to give each other the support and space needed to maintain their independent interests. You don’t have to resign yourself to receding happiness as time passes. A challenge of your current beliefs can help you rekindle the spark and enjoy a closer, more meaningful relationship. *****
