FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the January 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. It is the year TWENTY TWENTY!!! Wowzer. I remember being a young child thinking into the future; the year 2020 seemed like lightyears away. But here I am; here we are. As I look back at the year 2019 there were moments of selfdoubt and low confidence. But there were also several kick ass moments for me. Sometimes I think we get so caught up in the moments where things didn’t quote go so right. Some would call those failures, while others would call them lessons. In everything you do, there has to be those “review” moments. Either “how can we did it different the next time” or “how can we do it better”? Every successful person failed at least once in their climbs. Most of them even had those moments of self-doubt. The time is now to live out your destiny. Every day we live, we get older. Time is too short to wait “for the right moment”. You have to start somewhere and you have to believe in you. I want to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion.

3 TIPS FOR A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER YOU THIS HOLIDAY | STATEPOINT During the holiday season, there tends to be a lot of focus on big celebrations and spending money. But during this festive time of year, it is also important to take steps that will keep your family, your home and your wallet healthy. Use these tips from the experts at Dollar General to enjoy a happier holiday season.

HOSPITABLE HOME With friends and family visiting frequently, the holidays are a busy time around the home. To prepare for all of your guests, get your home into pristine shape. Stock up on cleaning supplies like disinfectant wipes, trash bags and paper items. Create a holiday season routine that dedicates one day a week or a few minutes daily to sprucing up. For holiday meals, look for wholesome ingredients like milk, eggs, bread, cheese, proteins, frozen and canned vegetables, canned fruits, grains and more. All of these healthier food options are available at more than 16,000 Dollar General Locations. Be sure to check your local store as the discount retailer is expected to have fresh fruits and vegetables available in approximately 650 stores by January. You can balance some of those heavier dishes enjoyed around the holidays with healthier snacking options. For delicious recipes and tips for holiday meals visit, Dollargeneral.com/easy-meals.

MINDFUL WALLET Create a budget for the entire season that includes seasonal expenses such as gift-giving, hosting, meal preparation, decorations and more. Then, plan to stick to this budget with thoughtful spending. Luckily, it’s easier to plan your expenditures in advance thanks to new tech. When shopping for friends, family and loved ones, use apps with budget-friendly features, such as the Dollar General app found on the App Store or Google Play. Its Shopping List feature helps you create your shopping list and calculate your estimated total before even going to the store. If you don’t have time to plan your trip, the Cart Calculator function, which is available in approximately 12,000 stores, allows you to scan products, find digital coupon savings and keep a running total of your basket. Additionally, you can take advantage of great deals offered by local and online stores such as Dollar General, which is currently running a toy discount of 25 percent off any $75+ qualifying purchase through December 24.

HEALTHIER YOU The season’s cooler temperatures can adversely affect immunity, and possibly impact your family’s risk of contracting viruses and bacterial infections, so watch for the warning signs and take preventative measures to stay well. Remember to wash your hands often, particularly before preparing food, stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly and consider stocking up on over-the-counter vitamins and minerals to improve winter wellness. It’s the season for celebration. Indulge yourself in making the most out of your time with loved ones, friends and family, but be confident in making healthy choices for you, your home and your wallet.

HOW TO MAKE A SPLASH ENTERTAINING Looking for new party ideas for any hour of the day? During the winter season, entertaining can seem challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little creativity and the right ingredients, you can make any occasion memorable. Whether you’re hosting a weekend brunch, a casual tailgate or an evening cocktail party, focus on food, refreshment and fun.

Brunch With Bubbles

Make Mid-afternoon Moments

To make a light and festive brunch, consider options that won’t weigh everyone down for the rest of the day.

Find fun new recipes or change up old favorites to delight your friends while gearing up for the big game.

1. Eat outdoors. Weather permitting (because some of you live in warmer areas than others), why not give your porch or patio one more round of entertaining?

1. Think convenient refreshment. Nothing could be easier than bringing high-quality ready-to-drink cocktails to your tailgate party. There’s a great new choice with Greenhook Ginsmiths Ready-to-Drink Gin & Tonic, which not only carbonates the tonic but also carbonates the gin to deliver pure refreshment in a can.

2. Keep menus light. * Try a power bowl using healthy proteins, or grain bowls with quinoa or faro. Add berries or citrus fruits like grapefruit for a bright touch, topped with yogurt and toasted nuts. * Make a frittata or huevos rancheros for an easy, one-pan entree. Let your dishes inspire your choice of drink, like a white prosecco sangria for a spicier meal. * Serve cocktails with a lower alcohol content that won’t leave guests craving a mid-morning snooze. Try fresh and fruity L’Aperitivo Nonino Botanical Drink topped off with prosecco and a twist of lemon for a refreshing Nonino Spritz. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

2. Spiced-up pigs in a blanket. Add a kick of flavor using andouille sausage instead of your usual “pigs.” Wrap sausage pieces in thin-cut or pre-cooked bacon before baking in readymade pastry dough. Create a dip using a base of Dijon mustard and honey. 3. Ultimate comfort food. For a real crowd-pleaser that combines some tailgate favorites: think baked potatoes, chili and macaroni and cheese. Serve the potatoes, chili and mac and cheese separately, providing fun toppings in a “bar” setup (think salad bar) with choices like chopped onions, grated cheese, jalapenos or croutons - the sky’s the limit!

HOW TO MAKE A SPLASH ENTERTAINING | BRANDPOINT Elevate Your Evening Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a family-style meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression. 1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami, smoked sausage and prosciutto along with with spreadable choices like paté, plus an array of cheeses. Choose softer, mild cheeses and harder, sharp cheeses to appeal to every palate. Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways. 2. Punch up your party. Instead of adding bartender to your multitude of host duties, make a delicious Rum Punch served in a beautiful glass punch bowl ahead of time and empower your guests to serve themselves:

11

Amarula Espresso Martini Ingredients: 1 shot vodka 1 shot Amarula Vanilla Spice Cream Liqueur 2 shots of espresso coffee 1 teaspoon caster sugar Instructions: Shake coffee, vodka, Amarula Vanilla Spice and sugar together with cubed ice. Strain into a martini glass and finish off with a light dusting of cocoa. There’s no reason entertaining during cooler temperatures can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless. For more cocktail recipe inspiration, visit TerlatoWines.com/ Artisan-Spirits.

Rum Punch Ingredients: 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Instructions: Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg. 3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or fresh-baked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. Or instead of dessert, finish off a delightful evening by offering your guests a nightcap with some sweetness in a glass that doubles as dessert:

RENEE GREENSTEIN

Her unconventional path to becoming a designer.

Renee Greenstein’s path to QVC has been an unconventional road one could say. Renee has had no formal training in the garment industry and has created not only one line, seen by millions, but two which we will get into later. Renee’s love of fashion came from her Aunt Gabe, who gifted her a beloved Louis Vuitton EPI bag at the age of 14; which to this day is a cherished memory and how the spark was lit. Renee’s life has been a series of interwoven stories beginning with being a black Jewish women who attended an all-white catholic college and fell in love with theology. Renee absorbed herself into the many facets of religions and wanting to know more through the understanding of different beliefs. However there was always something driving her soul to another path and she took that path in 1969 when she headed to the big city lights of New York where her goal was to seek a job in a coveted fashion house. The industry then was so much different than what we know of it today. Renee’s striking features and long legs for miles lead her to become a model for a company that sold furs. Leading her to eventually becoming a fitness model; during which time she got to flaunt various sportswear and swimsuits. During this time she’d come to realize that fashion had been limited only to those women who had fine figures. Eventually Renee got tired of the scene and felt she could create her own line. However she had zero training in the cut and sew world but she had a vision. This was a time when women were not as prevalent in the “rag trade” as they are today, so taking a leap of faith and finding a backer who would take her vision and create it was

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

daunting. But that was not going to be an issue for Renee and she knew that. She contacted a buyer at Marshals and simply asked how “does one create a line”. City Knits was born from many meetings over the course of time and she even went to work for the manufacturing facility who made the line. Her first line she created was picked up by QVC, located in West Chester, Pa. The first time she was on air she totally sold out of product ultimately QVC bought that line which is no longer. Renee knew she wanted to create a line that incorporated all women. She had found shapers that were extremely uncomfortable; who wants to wear that and then undergarments underneath? Finally they came across a Matt fabric that is 14% spandex and allowed women the look that keeps you in without all the extra clothing. It was the first yoga pant that allowed her fans to go to work during the day and switch into your shirt & accessories, and you were out the door for an evening with the girls or date night. She not only wanted women to look fabulous but to feel fabulous; Thus Attitudes by Renee & Women in Control was born. Her line encompasses every woman’s size from XXS to 3xlg with no up-charge for the larger sizes. If she had learned one thing from the first go round it was that this was her line and she was going to manufacture it as well. Renee has been quoted “If you feel good, then you will look good” and her legions of followers know and understand that the quality of her line comes from her inspirations at home and in her travels

16 QSM: Hello Renee. Congratulations on your success so far. I got to know you a little through Sarah and I am quite impressed. Before you got into fashion, what were you doing? Renee: Before I got into fashion, I was in school; I came to the states and went to college. I was majoring in psychology and realized that it wasn’t for me. I had an intense desire to know more about theology, religion, how a person became Protestant, Jewish, Catholic, etc; being that I’m Jewish I found other religions very fascinating. There’s a separation between Old Testament and New Testament. In the Jewish faith we still believe in the Old Testament and we are waiting for the Messiah. It was then that I decided I wanted to work with people. It was always about Fashion in my soul, it had just not surfaced but it was there. My Aunt Gabe gave me my first EPI bag when I was 12 or 13 years old. I got my first Chanel jacket at 16 and to this day I treasure that memory as that was a very large gift to give a young adult like myself. I would read magazines and be like Oh My God! Fashion was definitely my passion. It took me traveling down a different path to fully realize that fashion was it for me in the end. QSM: How does one who has never had any formal training, then become a big time designer? Renee: Well that’s going to be tough if you don’t have any formal training. I would say go work in a department store, boutique, or specialty store as you need that background. The hours can be grueling but if it is truly what you wish then that won’t matter much. You need to absorb everything about the business from the buying aspect, to the day to day, accounting, and then there is the sourcing of trims. You have to have a flare. If you don’t have a flare and don’t know how to put things together then it’s not going to work for you. It’s a talent and an eye. Schooling is important as well as working as a stylist or interning somewhere where you can get hands on working with people and clothing. For me it was hours of learning, sometimes the hard way, but that can be the best way as we learn through those hiccups. I remember one day sitting on the floor and I had fabrics strewn all around me, thinking what the heck am I doing, but loving every single minute of it. QSM: Let’s take a couple of steps back for a moment. You picked up and moved to NYC. Was it your intention to get into modeling? How did that come about? Renee: No this was never my intention, I just needed to find a job. I dropped out of college and I had met a young lady who asked me to stop by her showroom. Even though I’m not that tall, I’m all legs, she told me they were always looking for models. I ended up going to an audition for their showroom as a fit model and ended up landing the job. That’s how it all started. QSM: Tell me about your first line that you created when you began your journey in fashion. Renee: I am a woman from Manhattan and I would see other women in the airports checking in huge bags of luggage. One day I met a woman who was going away for four days and you would have thought she was going away for two months. Here I was with my carry on, going away for ten days with one bag. The woman asked me where I checked my luggage and I said it was right here (in my carry on). So for me it was all about packable clothes, pieces that don’t wrinkle as even I have burned a shirt before. My first collection was called Citiknits and it was all about the Chic Manhattan lady. My inspiration came from Donna Karan’s six essential easy pieces collection; I wanted to design clothes that WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

you could layer and pack easily. QSM: What was that process like and looking back today, what you wish you knew then. What were the trials and tribulations between then and now? Renee: I wish I would have known about nerves. With the stakes being so high, no one talks about the toll it takes on your body and mind. Something I have had to learn over the years is mindfulness and the 7-8-9 breathing technique. This technique helps me keep calm by emptying the air in my lungs and breathing in and holding for 7 seconds. Then exhaling all the doubt and fear out of me for 8 seconds and I just keep repeating that until I feel ready. There has been many ups and downs between when I started and now. Thankfully, along this journey I have a solid group of people in my life who believed in me and kept me grounded to a point. As long as you have support from the important people in your life and you believe in yourself, nothing should stop you from chasing your dreams!

QSM: Let’s talk about Attitudes by Renee & Women with Control. What can people expect from these two brands? Renee: To find clothes that will compliment you, pants that you don’t have to worry about wearing a shaper as it’s all about being comfortable. You could never pay me to wear a shaper there is absolutely no need to wear all of that clothing under your clothing. Funny, I listen to how the Kardashians wear multiple pairs and I wonder, if you have to go to the bathroom quickly, how do you with all that on? So I created this fabric that was 14% spandex and it wasn’t shiny or looked like athletic wear. It took me years to create but it came out with a matte finish with four way stretch and butt lifting features. Mother Nature brings you down, and I want to lift you all up! Then, Attitudes by Renee are the complimentary pieces to finish off the outfit, whether it be a great top, sweater, blouse, jacket, or accessories. QSM: Can you tell us about your business partner and how this partnership was born? Renee: My husband Justin and Randie are my business partners. When I met Randie she was working at a company where I had interviewed to be a sales manager. Upon coming WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

on board in that position I had to fire some of the employees. So when they all saw me, they probably thought, “who is this b-i-t-c-h coming” (haha)as I was always taught, when you walk into a company that you are going to run, you need to bring your own people. If the people from the past management are still there they most likely aren’t going to be loyal to you and respect you. I’m not sure what Randie thought of me at the time, but she was the only female on the sales team and none of the men respected her, sad to say. Randie and I bonded and became good friends. Shortly after me working there I decided it was time for me to branch out and go on my own. I asked her to come with me, at that time Randie had young twins so she would come in a little later than everyone else but would always get everything done; whereas someone who came in early would just chit chat and not really work. I told her I was all about money and the worst thing that could happen is we find another job. Well Randie and I have been together ever since and we have celebrated their Bat Mitzvah, graduation from high school, college, one wedding, and one grandchild. I always tell her we were separated at birth, she is like my sister.

dollar, give a quarter. Be appreciative of what you have in life. I’m very involved with the arts. Public theatre is one of them. When we moved to Manhattan all I wanted to do was go to Shakespeare in the park. The plays were outside, and besides being afraid of bugs, I thought they were absolutely fabulous. The tickets to attend are free and someone once told me you could hire a student to stand in line for you. I thought to myself, why I would want to hire a student to do that. So I googled Public Theatre, and I found out how to become a member. After a few times attending different plays, I noticed the faces of the people attending and how everyone enjoyed the theatre; it was diverse and wonderful! Public Theatre gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy theatre for free and over the years Justin and I became more involved and now we are partners and great supporters. I am also a part of the Central Park Conservatory because I love the beauty of the parks. In addition to that I am a part of WIN as well, which is Women In Need. If you are not familiar with the organization, it is the largest provider of shelter and supportive housing for New York City’s homeless families, especially women and children. Statistics show that families are one paycheck away from homelessness, God forbid you get sick or lose your job, not everyone in America can afford to have a great bank account. Financial advisors say you should have six months of savings to just cover your rent. Let’s get real, seriously?!

QSM: Both of these brands are sold on QVC as well, correct? Renee: Yes they are. You can shop my collection at QVC. com and search Women with Control! https://www.qvc.com/fashion/women-with-control/_/NlgltZ1z13j0h/c.html?redirectTerm=women+with+control QSM: You’ve now been on QVC with your brands for how long? Renee: I’ve been with QVC going on 23 years now! QSM: As I understand it, you are also a philanthropist. How important is giving back for you and why? Renee: My dad always said to give back. If you make a

QSM: That is awesome. Congratulations on all your awards that you have received over the many years. If you could, what would you say is the most cherished one that you received and why do you hold that particular one near and dear. Renee: I received “New Concepts” from QVC. It was because I had invented Women with Control and not having to wear a shaper. Style is not about size, it’s about attitude! 6 WAYS TO TURN YOUR HOME INTO A NATURAL OASIS | BRANDPOINT

This is around the time when many people begin to make resolutions to for the New Year strong. This might mean ramping up your workout routine, increasing your self-care regimen or finding time to de-stress.

fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures you’ll always have some on hand. You can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths for a natural air freshener throughout your home.

The EPA reports we spend 90 percent of our time indoors, but most people feel that spending time in nature has a positive effect on their mental well-being and stress level, according to a recent YouGov study commissioned by VELUX. So, if your goal is to de-stress, here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors.

Meditate or do yoga in the morning

Fill your home with photos of nature

Go green with your décor

Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view.

Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your décor. The possibilities are endless - use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way.

Waking up with stretching or meditating is a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed.

Let in more fresh air and natural light Use natural cleaning products Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open is a simple home renovation project to improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better sleep at night. Fill your home with natural scents

Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps. For more information, visit whyskylights.com.

till going strong in modeling for over 2 years now, I, Natasha Crys, have experienced this industry and have become experienced in this industry in many different ways. I continue to walk in various runway shows, such as numerous designers for NYFW, Full Figure Fashion Week, National Curves Day and more, to increase and sharpen my skills. Despite what my long term goals are in the fashion/ modeling industry, I believe it is smart and best to be versatile in anything you decide to pursue. I want to be someone who does it all. I also continue to be a model feature in magazines such as LoveUMag and FabUPlus; sharing my stories and journey as a Plus Size Model. I’m forever grateful for any magazine that allows up and coming models like myself to be showcased on their platform; and I aim to be a cover model as well someday soon. In regards to my photo shoots, I’ve largely tapped into my creative side, putting together my own concepts, looks and overall creative visions. I create art, I am art. Even if I recreate an iconic look or image, I still put my own stamp or personal touch to it. I’ve learned to truly bring myself out in colorful ways with the independent shoots I manifest, which has really drawn attention from a lot of different people in the industry, including Terri Murray; that which led to my first non-exclusive model contract with Terri Murray Model Agency this year. While modeling has grown as a passion of mine, fashion is my first love. Fashion was an olive branch to modeling and continues to be so for other avenues I’ve began venturing. Other avenues such as cohosting (with @von_ dapperrockstarr) weekly live videos from my Instagram titled #ThickTalkThursday, which highlights plus size people and the industry, events & fashion, every Thursday. In addition to my pursuits, I want to use my own platform to bring awareness to the plus size industry. I use this live, open “Ted Talk” (or “Tash Talk” ;) to welcome all different kinds of people from different walks of life to join in on topics to share their experiences and points of view. I understand what it’s like to be judged on your following rather than your talent and I choose to uplift and highlight those people whose voices should be heard, whose talents should be seen. I truly love what I do as a model and I want to expand that into other interests of mine. I have already been planning on putting those interests into action and I cannot wait to launch those ideas! Please follow my Instagram page @ Natasha_crys_ for updates on what’s to come and to tune in to #ThickTalkThursday to either learn more about the plus industry and those who contribute to it, or if you’re a contributor yourself, we’d love to hear from you. I am always going to build myself and others, and I will do it with love and fashion.

Let’s get to know Natasha Crys QSM: Tell me something about Natasha that would surprise people to know. Natasha: Something surprising about me is I’ve recently been taking boxing lessons, just because I like to try different, new things, especially when trying to keep working out fresh and interesting/fun. I’m still surprised myself. It’s a hard, painful sport and I love it. QSM: What do you do for fun? Natasha: I’m a very spontaneous person. I do random things any time I can get the chance to do so. I’m a foodie so I like to visit different restaurants and I go to new ones all the time to try new cuisines, especially in New York City, some which inspire me to try and recreate at home. I’m also big on nature and like to visit various parks walk around and just take in the sights, it’s therapeutic for me. Sometimes just taking in the sights can also lead to a new photo shoot idea and/or location. And of course I love to spend a little check and go shopping for me ;) QSM: When I see Natasha I see beauty and confidence; were you always this way? Natasha: According to my mom, I’ve always been beautiful (lol), but my confidence came gradually as I grew up, as I discovered more of who I am, who I don’t want to be and as I learned how to make my own rules of what beauty and confidence is for me. And that’s way more important and valuable than “always being confident”. You have to discover what you’re confident about yourself in the first place. QSM: Tell us about life growing up for you and how it ultimately may have shaped you into the person you are now? What lessons did you learn that will always stay with you? Natasha: I can’t say growing up was dreadful. You have your growing pains of course but I also had a couple true friends and close family that helped me to overcome

those times. I’ve had acquaintances, even teachers, in school that have talked about me in more ways than just my weight. As a teenager, it resonates with you but you can either turn that into a pity party or a lesson. Fortunately, I always took the hurt by recognizing it as how not to treat someone else. The saying “hurt people, hurt people” may be real for some, but for me, knowing how that hurt feels made me learn how to avoid feeling that way again, and to never cause that feeling to another, especially not because of who or what they are. QSM: You and I share a common practice when it comes to being versatile in anything you decide to pursue. It is always one of my pieces of advice that I like to give people. What does that look like for you in regards to your modeling career? Natasha: There are some model-related avenues that I personally do not want to pursue long-term, however I choose to continue to practice and be well-versed in those techniques because I want to very skilled in every aspect. I don’t want to be passed up on an opportunity because I am lacking in something. Building your level of skills and expertise is important for how far your future goes. QSM: When we reached out to you to do this cover feature, I have to say that I never knew that this was on your bucket list. I have worked with a lot of models who have been featured in our magazine as well as other. But one of the things a lot of them say is they want to be on the cover. What is the difference between being in a magazine and on the cover? Natasha: It’s just a huge honor to be asked and trusted enough to showcase someone’s magazine for the month. That model is the first thing all the magazines viewers will see, it is their first impression. So for a magazine brand to choose to have you as such a high representation of them, it means a lot to a model.

QSM: What career did you see yourself embarking on when you were growing up? I wanted to be a teacher. Don’t ask me why. lol Natasha: When I was really young I wasn’t one of those kids who knew they wanted to be a doctor or a singer or anything; I was in many clubs in school, tried different things to peak my interest. I eventually found that Creative arts, music, theater and fashion Is what peaked my interest. QSM: What do you currently do for a living? Natasha: I work in logistics for a beauty company in New York City and I’m currently working on building up my brand and who I am as a Fashion entrepreneur. QSM: I remember when we first met at the Ms. Kurvacious competition. I remember when we first spotted you in the crowd, there was something different about you that stood out from a lot of people there. In an industry riddled with models, what is your why? What message are you trying to send via your modeling platform? Natasha: That anyone can pursue anything they want, all the while being themselves, beautifully and purely themselves. Push through the boundaries and know there doesn’t have to be instant gratification for it to be possible. As they say shoot for the moon because if you miss you’ll still land amongst the stars. And we all know this galaxy is big as hell. QSM: Who are your favorite models in this industry and why? Natasha: My favorites are simply those who genuinely support and love this modeling industry. Those that spread awareness to what is amazing about it as well as what it lacks. Models who choose to use their platforms to be a voice and lift up others.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

QSM: If you had the opportunity to change one thing about this industry what would that be? Natasha: For people to take a chance on something other than the norm or what they think is acceptable or “most beautiful”. There are a lot of different kinds of people, who can relate to a lot of different kinds of people. I would change it to be color and shape blind. QSM: You have been blessed with some great opportunities in your career thus far. What is your ultimate goal (as it pertains to modeling)? Natasha: My ultimate goal is to excel in print and editorial for modeling. And I really would like to be in fit modeling as well. Additionally, my long term goal is to design plus size attire. I’ve been designing on scrap paper since I was a kid and didn’t believe I could really make that happen until recently. QSM: What can we be on the lookout for from you Natasha? Natasha: You can be on the lookout for a lot more of me. My drive is only growing as much as my brand and my interests. I have a few things in the works such as a clothing brand and some other things coming soon but I’ll let the rest be a surprise ;) QSM: You know I love me some Natasha. And I always love when I get to chat with you. Thank you for always taking the time for us. Let everyone know where they can find out more information on you? Website, social media links…. Natasha: My main social media page is on Instagram: Natasha_crys_ follow me for further updates especially on my website launch coming soon.

QSM: Tanesha, your story is quite inspiring. Tell me a little bit about Tanesha. Not Tanesha the Blogger or Tanesha the Designer. Tell us some things that people don’t know about you. Tanesha: Thank you! I’m just a regular girl, trying to make a difference in the world. I live in a relatively small town in the SF Bay Area, born and raised, and I love it. My entire family lives in the area and I’m the oldest of 6; we’re all really close. I’m also a total introvert, so being able to do what I love on my own terms, and do it on the internet, is a dream come true! QSM: When did your love for fashion start? Tanesha: I think it started around the age of 4. I’d watch my grandma putting her accessories on. She’d sit at her vanity and put on earrings, a necklace, gloves, a hat; the woman was beyond GLAMOROUS and I wanted to be just like her. QSM: Grandmas had style honey!!! I know; my grandma was a Diva. Lol Now how about the blog? Is this something that you have always wanted to do? Start a blog? I imagine you as a kid with a diary writing away. Lol. Am I right? Lol Tanesha: My husband was actually the one who suggested I start a blog. Back in 2011 when he brought it up (after hearing me complain about not pursuing my dreams of attending design school), I had no idea what style blogs even were, and it took him weeks to convince me to pose for pics! QSM: Ok Ok, shout out to the hubby on the push! What was your very first blog about? Do you recall? Tanesha: Yes! It was an outfit that featured a leopard print top, which I belted, and skinny jeans - classic GWC. QSM: Did you think that it would become so popular? Were you ready for that? Tanesha: I had no idea anyone would even find it online! I just needed a creative outlet at the time. My husband and I would rush home from the office to shoot whatever I was wearing that day, I wasn’t even writing anything in the beginning or linking to what I was wearing. I was just having fun with it!

QSM: When/How did the designing career begin? Tanesha: I think around the age of 12, when I realized that the fashion world wasn’t catering to bodies like mine, is when I made it my goal to one day be a designer. After blogging for a couple years, I had the itch to design something of my own, so I designed a tutu skirt in 2 colors and launched it for Holiday 2013. I did a full collection the following year, then took a break to focus on growing the brand. In 2017 and 2018 I worked with retailers to bring more designs to market. This year me and my team launched our own e-comm and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come! QSM: Congrats again. Where do the inspiration for your pieces come from? Tanesha: I’m always designing my dream wardrobe, which are typically pieces I can’t find in my size. QSM: Makes sense. In addition to all of this, you are also a mother of two correct? Tanesha: Yes, I have a 5 year old son, a 1 year old daughter and an 8 year old English bulldog. QSM: YES! Can’t forget the furbaby. Are the kids as much into fashion as you are? Tanesha: They are and I love it! My son has been dressing himself since around the age of 2 and a half, and my daughter has been into shoes and accessories since she could go into my closet and put them on. It’s the cutest thing ever when she walks around in my heels, always the red ones! QSM: How does your husband feel about sharing his famous wife with the fashion world? Tanesha: He’s my number one fan, always, and we run GWC together, so he constantly encourages me to be myself and just have fun with it. QSM: What advice can you offer to someone looking to get into blogging or maybe even starting a fashion line? Tanesha: The best advice I can give is to just start. Don’t worry about having a plan in place, or focus on monetization or traffic. Do it because you love it and the rest will follow! QSM: Great advice! Your success story is truly inspiring. We will continue to follow you and support anywhere we can. Please leave your information for people who may want to read your blog or shop with you. Tanesha: Thank you so much! 4 Ways to Protect Yourself From ID Theft This Holiday Season

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM ID THEFT | STATEPOINT

51

‘Tis the season for holiday shopping. When making purchases online, be sure to protect yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft -- it’s more common than you may think. With just a few pieces of personal information, thieves can open new credit lines, drain bank accounts and file fraudulent tax returns. The Federal Trade Commission says credit card fraud was the number one type of identity theft reported in 2018, with 167,000 people saying their information was misused on an existing account or used to open a new credit card account. No matter what form it takes, identity theft can cost thousands of dollars and take years to correct. Below are four tips to help prevent identity theft: 1. Vary passwords: Use a different username and password for each shopping account. That way, if someone steals your information on one account, they won’t be able to go on a shopping spree at other sites, too. 2. Track transactions: Check your statements for any suspicious activity. If you don’t recognize a transaction, contact your Credit Card Company or bank right away. 3. Beware of scams: Watch out for phishing scams in which fraudsters send emails that look like they’re from a reputable company, but aren’t. Avoid clicking on links in emails as they may download malware that can give thieves access to your personal information. Always visit a retailer’s website directly to make a purchase. 4. Get identify theft insurance: Some insurance companies offer coverage to make the process of undoing the damage from identity theft easier and less costly. For example, Erie Insurance has Identity Theft Recovery Coverage, an affordable option that can easily be added to a homeowners or renters insurance policy. “When someone uses information about you without your permission, it takes time and money to straighten things out,” said Robert Buckel, vice president of product management at Erie Insurance. “This coverage offers peace of mind to help you restore your credit and make the process -- and your life -- a little easier.” Protecting your identity may not be top-of-mind during the holiday shopping season, but with just a few safeguards in place, your online security can be greatly enhanced.
