Welcome to the June 2018 issue of Queen Size Magazine.

FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief Photo by PDrew Photography Dress by Juul Couture Makeup done by Brooklyn Tate

I am pretty hopeful at this point that we are finally done with the snow. Yes Lord!! This month we had a great opportunity to work with an amazing bridal designer who saw that there was a need and answered the call. Some of know the woes of shopping around for a wedding dress that will fit us. How are we supposed to feel amazing on our perfect day when we are sashaying around in a size 24/26 dress when we know we only wear a size 20. Oh yeah, in case you didn’t know, wedding gowns are cut small. The great thing about Your Wedding Affair is that you are not buying a size; you are buying a dress made specifically for YOUR body. The ladies had a blast participating in the shoot. Some were planning weddings for real, and some were planning weddings in their heads; either way everyone had fun. It is moments like this that make me proud to put out this publication every month; providing opportunities and fun. Thank you all who have participated. We are halfway through the year already! I am looking forward to another great year. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail. com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| JUNE 2018 ISSUE

MY RAINBOW EATING “DIET”. In this issue I wanted to get more in-depth about nourishing your body. I’m going to be focusing on food consumption and my rainbow eating “diet”. It’s not really a diet in the sense of weight loss but it is the method I use for my daily and regular eating habits. In this issue I wanted to get more in-depth about nourishing your body. I’m going to be focusing on food consumption and my rainbow eating “diet”. It’s not really a diet in the sense of weight loss but it is the method I use for my daily and regular eating habits. The concept of rainbow eating is based on the idea that you consume food from each color group, giving you nutrients and vitamins in a balanced way. Getting deeper in to the concept that I follow focuses more on the Chakras that are associated with each color group. How I usually asses what items to purchase when food shopping is by taking a quiz to determine which Chakra requires the most attention at the time. The questionnaire I use comes from the book “Chakra Foods for Optimum Health” by Deanna Minich. I like to take this quiz at least once a month and I try and re-take it whenever I’m going groceries shopping to help ensure I am providing my body with what it really needs. For example, the most recent time I took the quiz, I found that my third eye and my sacral Chakras needed the most attention for healing or opening. Based on the corresponding colors this means that the main color groups I will be focusing on consuming will be purple and red for my third eye, and orange for my sacral plexus. While normally my third eye is one of my strongest chakras its doesn’t really bother me to concentrate on reds and purples because its means I can go ham on some blueberries and blackberries (they’re my favorite berries) without feeling bad at all.

MY RAINBOW EATING DIET| COURTNEY PENNINGTON

Another important factor to mention is that each chakra correlates to certain organs and body parts as well, for instance the Sacral Plexus Chakra is associated with the bladder, hips, kidneys, large intestine, colon, ovaries, and the uterus. So, while I’m opening and balancing my chakra with the food I eat, I am also taking care of my organs and important systems within my body. Some of the orange food I should try, and purchase are salmon, yams, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, orange bell peppers, carrots, tangerines, persimmons, peaches, passion fruit, papayas, oranges (duh), mangoes, cantaloupe, and apricots. Certain foods satisfy more than one color group like mango is considered orange and yellow, so it helps the solar plexus as well. Strawberries are considered pink and red, so they are great for the heart chakra and the root chakra. Grapefruit is considered yellow and red for some reason and is beneficial to both the root chakra and the solar plexus. Even though I’m focusing on fixing my third eye and sacral plexus I still need to consume nutrients from other color groups, how I manage to get as many colors in my weekly diet as possible and also focusing on the main chakra or chakras of the time is by eating food from the focal chakra group(s) everyday and then also focusing on a different and additional color each day. As an example, let’s say I start my week on Sunday with my additional color group being the root chakra or red foods while still concentrating on my sacral plexus and have oranges and strawberries for breakfast, red and orange bell peppers with my lunch, and Salmon for dinner. When building my meal plan for the week this is how I focus on the main issues without neglecting a balanced diet. If you are interested in a Chakra Diet or Rainbow Eating the seven main Chakras and colors are as follows: Root Chakra is red, Sacral Chakra is orange, Solar Plexus Chakra is yellow, Heart Chakra is green and pink, Throat Chakra is blue, Third Eye is purple, Crown Chakra is clear and white. The Crown chakra is not associated with any specific foods except for water, but to nourish the Crown you should eat wild caught or free-range animals and organics fruits and vegetables, along with all foods made with love. Take some time to evaluate if Rainbow Eating will work for you, but whatever your regular diet is make sure to take care of yourself. KAREN MONTGOMERY HOW WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY SAVED HER LIFE

This journey started in December of 2016. After years of fighting diabetic problems, 14 diabetic pills and two insulin injections each day and the constant fluctuation of weight gain and weight loss, I decided to have a gastric bypass at the age of 61. My glucose was out of control and between the high glucose levels and the numerous medications that were supposed to control it, I was destined to die. The first time I went to a weight loss clinic was during in 2010. At that time not too many options were available. I entered the office with my $300 deposit in hand because medical insurance was not covering the cost. As I sat in a chair large enough for three people, I was excited to be there. I weighed in at 195 pounds; the doctor came into the office, handed me back my deposit and told me to go to a gym, I did not belong there. Instead of going to a gym, I went home and ate as much as I could. I was disappointed, discouraged and did not know what to do. Eventually I started going to a gym but it was always a yo-yo of weight loss and gain. More importantly, I now was dealing with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and neuropathy in my feet. Additional medications were added. This was not the quality of life that I wanted for myself. Everyone told me to embrace my pretty looks and my plus size body but no one knew that it was so much more than just that. As gastric bypass surgeries became increasingly popular and acceptable by medical insurance companies, I decided in November 2016 to try again. My primary care physician referred me to a facility at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Once again, weighing in at 210 pounds, they told me I did not have a lot of weight to lose. However, this time they considered my high BMI (Body Mass Index) and the fact

that I was diabetic with high blood and cholesterol levels; this made me eligible for the surgery and my insurance company agreed to fully pay for the surgery. I was ready! After numerous lab tests, a psychological exam, meeting with a nutritionist and group workshops, the surgery was set for January 2017. A few weeks before the surgery, I had an asthma attack. They cancelled the surgery and rescheduled for another date in February. Everyone told me that this was an omen to not get this dangerous surgery done. I was told by many that I did not need surgery, I was too old for surgery, I would not heal well from the surgery, I would look like a crack head, my skin would look horrible, my hair was going to fall out and that it was so dangerous I could die. I prayed on it day and night. Prior to the February surgery date, I had another asthma attack and this time my glucose levels were dangerously high 470. They sent me directly to the hospital for a triple shot of insulin. I needed to get these health issues under control before any surgery could be performed. I prayed on this situation every moment! When I returned to the doctor’s office I was told that my lungs were clear and my glucose levels had lowered. Surgery was scheduled within the next two weeks. I opted for the Gastric Sleeve instead of the Gastric Bypass which my daughter had recently just completed. The gastric sleeve is less invasive, does not involve the colon and the healing process is easier. During this procedure they removed 85 percent of your stomach through a laparoscopic procedure. I was scheduled for surgery at Chestnut Hill Hospital on March 28, 2017. Two weeks prior to the surgery, I was on a liquid only diet. I lost 15 pounds pre-surgery. Once again, I was ready!

The surgery began at 3pm and by 9pm, I realized I was in my hospital room. There was no pain but I was very droggy and felt like I could not talk or respond to my family and friends that were there. I was suppose to go home the next day but could not get myself together. I looked at the monitor and my blood pressure was sky high. Unbeknownst to me, they had me on morphine for pain. I was livid! This accounted for my extremely high blood pressure and inability to function. They removed it upon my request but I had to remain in the hospital another day. I had no pain, just achiness; I was able to use the restroom alone and had absolutely no feelings of hunger. I was on a liquid only diet and really did not feel the need to drink or eat. I was told during the surgery they fixed a Hiatal Hernia; my stomach was so enlarged it was pushing into my esophagus. Immediately, my diabetic levels lowered. I stayed in the hospital two days and was discharged with a visiting home nurse for the next two weeks. Sleeping was a struggle as I could not sleep on my stomach or side and could not lay flat. My recliner became my best friend for the next month. There continued to be no pain just feelings of aches now and then near the surgical entry point. This subsided after one month. The surgical points were the size of pin head; there were 6 of them. They healed quickly and are barely visible at this time. I am the most fearful person of needles but after this surgery, I had to give myself a needle that contained blood thinner medication for two weeks. I did it. I had to walk everyday for about five minutes to keep circulation moving and prevent blood clotting. I could only drink my breakfast, lunch and dinner. Because I had no feelings of hunger, I would often forget to eat all day. This was good for the weight loss but not for glucose levels. One day my glucose dropped to 44. I remember feeling like I only wanted to sleep but then when I attempted to stand up, my legs and hands were shaking. I had not eaten in 2 days. The visiting nurse arrived and gave me glucose pills. From that point on, I used an alarm to remind me that I should drink and/or eat. I was told that since I did not have a huge amount of weight to lose, my weight loss would be a slower process than someone who has 75 to over 100 pounds to lose. On my first visit, I had a weight loss of 15 pounds in a week. I no longer needed diabetic medications, blood pressure meds or cholesterol medications. Everything was on target including the healing. Fast forward, to date I have gone from a clothing size 22 to a clothing size 10 and even some size 8. I still have all my hair and no problems with my complexion. However, for the rest of my life I will continue under the care of the weight loss physician with office visits twice a year. I must also stay on vitamins, a daily multiple vitamin, vitamin, D and Vitamin B12. Protein water is my best friend. I will forever by in a gym or some other form of daily exercise.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2018 ISSUE

I still have no hunger cravings but I have adjusted to eating three meals a day. But these are not normal size meals. Remember I only have 15% of a stomach. I can no longer drink anything with my meals. Doing so causes your stomach to fill quickly before you eat the important foods that contain the protein and nutrients needed. If you drink before a meal, you wait 45 minutes to eat. If you eat, then you must wait 45 minutes after to drink. You can no longer drink a glass of water. You must sip or you will regurgitate. After a year, I still have to be careful of what my stomach can digest and how much. If it does not digest well, you will regurgitate or have dumping. Dumping is best described as instant diarrhea. For example, I can no longer eat a whole scrambled egg, only half. I cannot digest pork or beef or any type of meats that are fried because of the hard crust coating. Chicken and seafood is my main sources of protein. I diligently read all food labels being cautious of the sugar and carb contents. I am not able to eat more than one chicken wing, cannot digest white bread, can only eat a few ounces of potatoes, salads or soup at one sitting. The stomach fills up quickly. When feeling nauseated, I eat a small soft mint. Nausea can happen especially when you introduce new foods. I try eating the foods that I know will digest well. Sugar free popsicles, water ice and jello are great stomach fillers. My doctor says I am on point and there is no need to lose additional pounds. So at this time, I became faced with the part they don’t initially explain.... the excess skin. My upper arms have some excess skin, but below my stomach is the most. It looks nothing like the patients who were 600 pounds and loss weight but it is still there and I am conscious of it on a daily basis. To date, aside from just being there, it has not caused any skin or rash problems. No amount of exercise can make it go away, only surgery. This month I had my first visit to the plastic surgeon. I qualify to have the procedure done and my insurance will take care of the cost. However, unlike the gastric sleeve, this surgery requires the cutting away of the loose skin from the left side to the right side. After such surgery, you must wear a body band and the healing process is longer. Right now I have not made a decision as to whether I will trade my skin for a scar or leave it and go on with my life as is. I have always worn the proper foundations under my clothing and will continue to do so. A good spanx goes a long way. At age 62, I am grateful, at age 62, I no longer take diabetic medications, at age 62, and I have completed a journey that I never thought would happen. I question whether I should continue with the last part of this journey. I continue to pray about it. I still embellish being a plus size woman. I am not super model skinny but I am healthier and that was my goal. For anyone who is considering this surgery, make sure you are having it done for the right reasons. Make sure you are ready for a life altering change that goes way beyond just having the surgery done. The journey never ends, make sure you are ready.

KAREN MONTGOMERY; HER WEIGHT LOSS STORY| QSM

QSM: Tell us about Karen. Karen: I am 62 years blessed. I have two daughters Tanasha age 43 and Tiffany age 37. My grandchildren are Lonce age 17, Jazmynn age 15 and Julian age 13. I am a graduate of Community College of Philadelphia (Associate Degree in Mental Health), LaSalle University (Bachelor Degree in Social Work) and Temple University (Masters Degree in clinical Social Work). I was employed with the City of Philadelphia for 28 years prior to retiring in 2015 as a Child Abuse Investigator for the Department of Human Services. My love of modeling began in 10th grade when I entered by first pageant, Miss Ebony Pennsylvania, directed by the fabulous Ruth Harper. To date, I continue to enjoy modeling, commentating and producing fashion shows and pageants. I have worked as the Director of the Big Beautiful Women Pageant, International for the past 10 years and also have my own children’s modeling and enrichment group called Diamonds and Pearls. I am the Director of the children’s Miss Princess Pageant. My love of pageantry and modeling will always be a part of my spirit. But I also enjoy traveling and meeting people, shopping, karaoke and music of all types. I am 62 years of life and for that I am truly grateful. QSM: Was there any concern about doing the surgery because of your age? Karen: Absolutely. The gastric bypass is a much more involved type of surgery because it includes cutting of the stomach and the colon. Therefore, the healing process can be harder and slower but the weight loss is very rapid. I chose the gastric sleeve because it was a less complicated surgery and the healing process was not as long. However, the weight loss is slower. As with any surgery, complications can occur more often in an older person and especially an older person who has other medical concerns such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart murmur and asthma. These factors combined with age can result in surgical complications and a longer healing process that may not occur with a younger individual. I prayed on it. HEALTH AND FITNESS acceptable in society including the modeling industry. QSM: So I have to ask, was it more so your weight that contributed to your high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes? Or was it you eating habits? Karen: My poor eating habits contributed to my increased weight. Both contributed to by health issues. My eating habits were horrible and that included not drinking water and eating fast foods on a regular basis. If I had been able to lose the weight without surgery, I would more than likely still have developed the health problems because of the many years of poor eating habits. The weight was just an added problem. QSM: When the surgery was rescheduled a couple of times, did that make you second guess your decision? Did you feel like it was a sign? Karen: I did have one moment, just one, when I felt it was a sign from God saying don’t do it. However, I refused to believe that this was the life GOD wanted me to live; a life of medications and pain. It was during these moments that I prayed and meditated and meditated and prayed. My final conclusion was that I was killing myself and my health issues were truly out of control. I needed help. I went into surgery with a prayer and peace of mind that God’s will would be done but please God wake me up, Amen. lol

QSM: Overall, how did you feel at 195 pounds? Karen: At one point in my life my weight was 220 pounds. I continued to feel confident, I felt that I was an excellent example of a plus size woman; I felt that my life was good. However, as much as I appeared to be happy, I was not really happy. I knew I was becoming a walking time bomb. I knew and could see that the years and years of dieting was not working. I was constantly reminded by my physician that I was obese and I knew that my health was getting worst. I needed to do something or I would literally die. So I lost a lot of the self esteem that I initially had because I could not get rid of the weight, in turn, it caused me to eat more and gain more; a vicious cycle. Eventually, the issues of health won over being a plus size woman and I chose to have the surgery. QSM: Do you think if it weren’t for the medical problems that you would have been ok with being that weight? Karen: I would not have been ok because I often looked at myself as being overweight and obese. Even without having medical problems, there was always that voice in my mind telling me to do better. I think it was my mom... lol I never just woke up one day and decided that I wanted to be plus size but I was able to accept it because it became

QSM: Thinking back to your healing process, was there ever a moment that you regretted your decision to have weight loss surgery? Karen: Oh my goodness.... Yes Yes Yes! When I woke up from surgery and was able to feel that initial ache, I wanted to hurt somebody! I thought, OMG what have I done but just for that moment. They make you walk within hours after surgery (to prevent blood clots) but I was not in the mood. Standing up was very hard because you use your stomach muscles and I could feel every single one of them being used. I went home in two days and I had no complications with healing. There was never “pain” just achiness, but tolerable. I had no regrets. QSM: Do you miss the food that you can no longer eat? Karen: When I woke up from surgery, I had absolutely no hunger or thirst. The gland that triggers stomach hunger was removed with the 85% of my stomach. To this day, I do not miss any particular food that I can no longer eat. When I eat something, I am grateful that it is digesting properly. There are so many foods that I use to eat, that I know can no longer eat and the best part is not having that urge to want it. Initially, I had to remind myself to eat and even drink water. After a year, I am pretty much able to know which foods I can and cannot eat and how much I can eat. Fifteen percent of a stomach is not much to fill. The desire to eat certain foods or even the desire to eat is no longer there. I also still have to be careful because all those medical issues can return.

KAREN MONTGOMERY; HER WEIGHT LOSS STORY| QSM

QSM: You mentioned that there is no longer a need for you to lose weight. How do you know manage how much more you will lose: Karen: They tell you that after a year, your weight loss becomes stable following the gastric sleeve procedure. This is also why they tell you to wait a year before having the skin removal surgery. I have been told by my weight loss physician that my weight is good as well as my body mass index. Because I can no longer eat much, I will more than likely always lose a pound or two here and there but the extreme weight loss occurred in the early months following the surgery. It’s not hard to manage because again, you have no feelings of being hungry. I was told by the plastic surgeon that the extra skin under my stomach resulting from the weight loss is about an extra 15 pounds of weight. QSM: I know you have always been a supporter of the plus size industry. Do people within the industry look at you differently because you are no longer plus size? Karen: I use to always get the compliment of “you are so cute to be so heavy”. I find that statement to be sooo amusing. Do I turn ugly when I get thinner? I have only had one person call me a traitor to which I responded with “thank you for your opinion.” I don’t believe that anyone in the plus size industry looks at me differently. I am the same person; a little bit less weight and a lot healthier. I do believe that most were concerned about me having the surgery because of the complications that could have occurred. Actually, I was told that I am now a petite plus size. I will always be a supporter of the plus size industry. I just want those who are plus size to make sure you are a healthy plus size. Don’t get caught up in the image that will cause you to forget about your health.

the surgery ends. I am now seeing a plastic surgeon to have this extra skin removed or it will cause other problems such as rashes, infections etc. The journey never ends. But for me, it was worth it 110% and I am looking forward to many more changes throughout year two, QSM: I recall you saying that your family and friends had some concerns about your decision. How do they feel about it now? Karen: They are happy for me. I have had friends and family who have decided to have the surgery because of my journey. At one point when my weight loss got to a standstill, I contemplated having a full gastric bypass. My children were adamant that I should not do it. My nutritionist suggested I step up my exercise routines. I followed the advice of all of them and got back on track. They are very happy that my medical issues are no longer a concern as they were prior to the surgery. My family and friends continue to keep me going throughout this journey. This has been a humbling journey and learning experience. I am thankful and ohhhh so blessed.

QSM: You said the journey never ends. Can you elaborate on that? What does that mean? Karen: Yes it is a never ending journey. Over eating can result in feeling nauseated, vomiting and what they call the dumping syndrome (immediate diarrhea). Every day you will continue to introduce new foods to your digestive system. Sometimes they work ok and sometimes they do not. All foods become new foods after the surgery because you do not know what you can tolerate especially when you are ready to eat solid foods. For the rest of my life, I have to be careful of what I eat and how much I eat. Things I took for granted such as eating a cheese steak with chips, eating store bought salads; now I cannot eat. You have to be careful of how foods are cooked and what is mixed within them. It is important to become aware of all food items and also what you drink. Alcohol should be a no no, carbonated beverages, milk shakes etc. Everyone is different and will adjust differently but I guarantee your body will tell you when you ate the wrong thing. Vitamins become a daily requirement because your body is not getting all the daily nutrients from foods. After a year past surgery, it is a must to see your weight loss surgeon twice a year and have all lab work completed. Exercise is a must! BEAUTY AND FASHION

14

A beautiful black girl, born and raised in Elizabeth, NJ, the oldest of 6 siblings, I was a tomboy who loved making a statement! I would buy fashion magazines for trends and watch the international runway shows on tv every chance I could get. I participated in fashions shows in high school and college and knew that I wanted to pursue modeling once I finished college. For me, fashion is a form of expression and it was tough finding plus size clothes and bras that fit appropriately. I also realized there weren’t that many models that resembled me and I wanted to change that! I spent countless days researching and wrestling with the notion of “being good enough” and finally I just went for it. I found model castings online for local runway shows in NY/NJ, started submitting photos and made great progress! I went on to participate in modeling competitions, working with independent designers, being published in magazines and numerous runway shows. My first competition was the Face of Kurvacious in 2014 and the following year, Miss Full Figured USA 2015 winning the title Ms. Swimwear and 2nd runner up. Previous runway shows I’ve walked in are SmartGlamour, National Curves Day, Newday Associates, District of Curves, Curves Rock, Pink the Runway, UBM Fashion week and so many more. Having the opportunity to walk in these runway shows also allowed me to network and eventually collaborate with independent designers such as JBri designs, Bobbi Harris, and Tru Diva Designs to name a few. The June/July 2017 cover model for The Fashion DynastyMagazine, also featured in I-Fashion Magazine, Beyond Curves Magazine, IDare magazine and a few others. Needless to say, I’m so glad I took that leap of faith and found the courage to follow my dreams. This April will actually make 4 years that I have been modeling and it’s been an amazing experience thus far! In 2010, I graduated from Montclair State University receiving my bachelor’s degree in Humanities with a minor in Public Health. Unbeknownst that I would enjoy the supply chain business, 10 years later I currently work full-time as a Senior Customs Entry Writer. I am currently studying to be a licensed customs broker which I feel would be an amazing accomplishment and a jumpstart to my career. In addition to model, I am also a licensed NJ Bail bondsman, Notary Public, bartender for private events and aspiring Tax professional. Throughout this journey, I have traveled, met many beautiful talented people who have contributed to my journey in some way or another. All I can say is that I am humbled and grateful for being able to come this far and praise god for all that I have been able to accomplish. I enjoy learning, giving back to my community by volunteering and donating. I love to travel, history, languages, and exotic cars! Eventually I would love to have my own nonprofit business to be able to organize my own events to support my community and give back to others that want to grow and progress in their own career.

The Pros and Cons of wearing a Weave or Units Hello ladies and Gents. I have been asked a lot lately about the pros and cons of wearing a weave and or unit. This is not just coming from my women guest but also from some of my men clients who have or are thinking about getting one.

Ok the PROS of wearing a weave and or units:

There are actually some useful benefits to wearing hair weaves. If you’ve never thought to wear extensions before, find out how wearing them (the right way) could actually help.

Low Maintenance

Wearing a hair weave/units will allow you to style your hair in a hurry; perfect for those time-crunched mornings. Using synthetic hair comes pre-styled, so all you really have to do is fluff it and go. Human hair weaves/units offer more versatility than synthetics, but are still generally easy to care for.

Protective

Wearing a sewn-in hair weave, is typically braided close to the scalp and extension hair is added in wefts.(they have so many different techniques, consult your stylist). Weaves/ units takes the daily wear-and-tear, so your natural/ chemically treated hair is protected from the elements. Your hair won’t have to suffer abuse from the heat of blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons or hot rollers. It won’t be affected by harsh weather. Your hair will be protected from all of those routines and outside influences that can slowly split the ends and dry it out. Also great for my workout queens. Hair can stay healthy with proper care, while you wear it.

Less Manipulation:

This is one of the ultimate pros of wearing a weave. Manipulation of your natural tresses is drastically reduced which can guarantee retaining more length. Easier Transitioning: Short hair is extremely beautiful and sexy but it requires a lot of maintenance. For women who do not consider transitioning as an option, getting a lot cut off at one time can be a bit scary. Especially if one prefers longer lengths or is use to a certain look. True confidence comes from within but a weave can provide an easier transitioning period for a woman who may be choosing to grow out of their straightening chemicals or a short style.

Assists in Patience of Growth:

Weaves can assist in patience of growing your natural hair since your focus is taken away because daily contact with your natural hair is now eliminated which can control your urges in grabbing that measuring tape every 5 seconds to

progress new growth. This cuts out that in between stage that drives us all crazy.

Change:

Cut and color with ease. Experimenting with color and cut while wearing a weave is a safe and easy way to play around with different looks.

The CONS of weaving a weave and or units Temporary or Permanent Traction Alopecia:

This is not to be taken lightly. Traction Alopecia is a form of alopecia or moderate hair loss caused by a self-induced pulling force or action usually caused by too tight braids, twists or styles, ponytails, weaves and extensions. Traction Alopecia is one of the most common examples of hair loss among African American women.

Hair Care Neglect:

Neglecting of natural hair especially washing while sporting a weave can be a very easy mistake to make since your focus is on hair that is not your own. Extreme dryness of hair and scalp is one of the biggest and most common factors of natural hair while wearing a weave which can lead to breakage. Also lack of weave maintenance can cause odor and molding due to lack of regular air circulation and moisture that will accumulate within the weave creating an easier playground for fungus to grow and induce excessive shedding. SO PLEASE MAKE SURE HAIR AND SCALP IS ALWAYS DRY.

Constant upkeep:

Even though I previously mentioned less manipulation with your natural hair as a pro while wearing a weave, there is a flipside of that coin in the constant upkeep of the weave itself. Since your hair is constantly growing about ½ an inch a month, weaves require consistent maintenance. Too much tension on new growth increases your chances of traction alopecia. Professionals suggest no more than 6-12 weeks. I followed a consistent schedule of every 8 weeks.

Budget:

To put it in layman’s terms, weaves aren’t cheap! Unless you know how to apply your own weave, which I do not suggest, constant upkeep means constant expenses. If you are thinking about a weave calculate the figures for a year and see if it is an investment you are able to afford, if not this can cause problems with upkeep that in the future could cause irreparable damage to your natural hair. I hope and pray that this helps out. TAKE YOUR VITAMINS AND DRINK YOUR WATER. I SAY YES Crystal Lewis

SUMMERPROOF

FOUR ITEMS YOU MUST HAVE IN YOUR ARSENAL When the sun comes out, it’s usually a time to be fancy free! Toes get to enjoy their freedom, skin is safely soaking up sunrays, and the only thing that hasn’t changed is your makeup routine until you realize that summer weather can ruin makeup altogether. Don’t let the heat stop your beat! I’m sharing my latest Summer Bombshell techniques and must haves to keep your dollface going all summer long.

Primer Translucent Powder BB Cream Setting Spray SUNSCREEN ALERT! All skin needs SPF protection this summer. Looking your best is fabulous but make sure you don't sacrifice your health for your beauty.. Choose products that contain SPF protection or apply one separately. There is a common misconception that sunscreen is for fair or medium skin tones only and that is simply incorrect. Darker skin provides an SPF of only 5 . The recommended SPF is 30 . On top of helping screen out the suns health effects, sunscreen and block also help prevent premature lines, spots and wrinkles. It makes this a beauty and health preserving step all- in-one!

SUMMER BOMBSHELL By Crystal Carmen

PRIMETIME YOUR SKIN BEFORE YOU BEGIN! Your primer is your base for building good face and picking the right one helps the rest of your makeup to blend in smoothly and stay put. Why? The ingredients in most primers help to even out the texture of your skin under the makeup and gives your makeup more than just skin to attach to. It also helps to extend the time you can wear makeup throughout the day. Make sure you choose the right primer based on your skin type and apply after you’ve washed and moisturized your skin. If you have oily skin, you want to make sure you use an oil free moisturizer, like Neutrogena’s Oil Free Moisture, before applying primer OR find a primer that acts like both. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna has a Pro Filt’r Retouch Primer that acts like moisturizer and primer in one. If you have dry skin, it’s recommended that you use a primer in your t-zone or wherever you normally see oil appearing on your skin. GET LOOSE WITH TRANSLUCENT POWDER! Once you’ve applied your primer, take a stipple brush or a round powder puff and get your translucent powder! Adding translucent powder provides a sort of locking mechanism because it seals in your primer, helps to fill in pores even more, and is the second barrier to oils trying to shine through. Now, I’ve seen some people use a stipple brush to swipe powder over the face and if you’re one of those people, you’re not using the stipple brush correctly. The way to use a stipple brush is just as it sounds! Stipple on your product by dipping the brush into your powder and dab all over the face in a circular pattern until your face is evenly covered. If you’re using a sponge, make sure it’s dry for this step and pat the sponge into the powder and then onto your face and then use a clean fluffy brush to dust off the excess. One of my favorite translucent powders is Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder! BE BEAUTIFUL WITH BB CREAM! Now it’s time for BB Cream!! When BB Cream came on the retail product, everyone went BB-nanas!! It’s not only lightweight but it adds a healthy glow and even provides a sunscreen. Sunscreen not only prevents sun damage to the skin, but if you have any blemishes, dark spots, or red acne, sunscreen will help prevent those marks from setting into your skin! That’s right, the sun bakes your blemishes into your skin long after a breakout is over, so wear your sunscreen faithfully! BB Cream is available in almost every drug store or major makeup chain Maybelline, NYX, and even KISS New York have some great options! If you just can’t find the BB Cream that’s just right for you or you’re interested in an endless supply, take your oil free moisturizer, an oil free sunscreen like Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer, and an oil free foundation, mix them together, and apply with your wet (cold water only) beauty blender. If you have dry skin, you can use a light moisturizer, sunscreen, and a foundation as well. BABY WON’T YOU JUST SPRAY! Once you’re finished with all of tricks and tips, stipple or pat your face again with translucent powder one more time. Not only is loose powder the best for setting your wet products, but on the flip side of your face, your translucent powder is an army fighting off the elements from ruining your hard work. Then, you are finally ready for the coup de grâce; your setting spray. You now have a primer, products working with your skin and not against it, and you even have two sets of translucent powder to help stay fresh faced as long as you can, but if you don’t spray, it will all go to waste. A setting spray acts like a mousse or a styling spray! The same way these products freeze your hairstyle for long lasting stay, is the same way your setting spray freezes your beat! There are all kinds of setting sprays out here, but instead of focusing on which one to use first, I think it’s best to think about what you’ll be doing for the day. If you’re going to be busy running around then consider the setting sprays offered by Urban Decay or Pink Stiletto Cosmetic’s new OilControl Setting Spray but if you’re going to be out in the sun for long periods or in front of the camera lights for hours and hours then you want to go for Ben Nye’s Final Seal setting spray to keep your makeup going strong! So, there you have it! There’s no need to forego expressing yourself for the day just because of the heat! Arm yourself with the best products that work for you, apply correctly, and you’ll go from Winter Queen to Summer Bombshell while staying beat to capacity all year long!

Nicky

Mayers has been a lover of fashion for as long as she can remember. A native of Panama she grew up dressing her dolls with her grandmother’s help by making them clothes from fabric scraps. While growing up, she participated in church plays, modeling, and dancing, and quickly realized that she preferred designing and making the costumes, rather than being up-front and on stage. By the age of 12, she attended her first sewing class and learned the fundamentals of taking measurements, making flat patterns and garment construction. By the age of 18, she debuted her first collection in a runway show in Panama City. After arriving in the United States, her sewing skills were utilized for alterations, as clothes just never fit her perfectly. With her grandmother’s help, and guidance her sewing skills were perfected in the areas of construction, redesign and pattern making. After having to wear a lavender satin bridesmaid dress in her cousin’s wedding, she identified a need in the industry for bridesmaid dresses, and she launched “Your Wedding Affair” in 2007. By early 2008 she launched Harlem Weddings, a bridal trade show to showcase her bridesmaid and formal wear dresses. In 2011 she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to operate “The Brow Lady”, an awardwinning eyebrow salon. While “The Brow Lady” was a success and provided her with experience on operating a brick & mortar, her passion and desire to get back to designing dresses could not be contained, and in 2016 the NIDELKA brand was introduced with a new line of bridesmaid dresses. In 2017 an opportunity to participate in the Rainbow Weddings Bridal Expo came and with it her first Bridal Gown. That one gown inspired an entire collection, and a new concept in the bridal industry, and thus Nicky’s made-to-measure gowns enables her to provide brides who desired to be unique with a modern and elegant garment that is designed to their specifications and measurements. Who knew that designing doll dresses would turn into making wedding dresses one day? It never occurred to her that she will become a designer, she just wanted to sew!

A Sit Down With Nicky QSM: I love your success story. What is that plus size market like in Arizona? I may need to come out there? Nicky: The market in Arizona has not truly been developed due to geography of the City of Phoenix. Urban Centers are just starting to developed as there is so much suburban sprawl, which forces buyers to drive over an hour just to cross the city in the hot sun. I see the future with light rail and redeveloped downtowns as an anchor for retail in the future. QSM: What is it like being a designer in Arizona, vs being on in NY? Nicky: Arizona again is so far from the fashion world, and there is no base of trend setting designers, and fabric sourcing is impossible. I have to source from either Los Angeles, and/or New York. We are currently planning to open a location in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, as we truly believe that the East Coast and its density of population is the best market for our Plus Size line. QSM: The Brow Lady; was this another one of your babies? Tell us more about that? Nicky: The Brow Lady was a Salon focusing on eye brow design and it was the first of its kind in Arizona launching in 1999. It quickly became a leader in Eye Brow Design and Eye Lash installation. Again, due to the lack of density in the Arizona Market, while it became a huge success we felt it needed to be repositioned on the east coast. QSM: So I take it you didn’t like your lavender satin dress that you had to wear? Lol Nicky: No, I was not a fan of that dress. QSM: Do you only cater to plus size? Nicky: No, my gowns are available in sizes 2-36. However, unlike standard bridal manufactures my gowns are not a scale up version of a standard size gown. The gown is truly customized for each woman’s body while it’s being created, not after you have purchased it, and are now at alterations. A gown that has gone through alterations is not a custom gown, as there are so many things that cannot be done to the gown due to how it was manufactured, that it will never fit your body perfectly. We want every bride to feel comfortable and look beautiful in their dress on what is probably the best day of their lives. QSM: On average, how long does it take you to make a bridesmaid dress and a wedding gown? Nicky: Bridesmaid dresses are ready within 4 weeks; the wedding gowns take 6-12 weeks to manufacture, and a rush order can be process in as little as 4 weeks. On occasion a bride has a “Dress Emergency”, such as dress did not arrive, bridal store went out of business, dress was altered incorrectly, or last-minute proposal and wedding, and I have handled emergency situations within a week’s time.

YOUR WEDDING AFFAIR| QSM

QSM: Tell me more about Harlem Weddings. Nicky: Harlem Weddings was the first bridal show in Harlem, NY. It featured African American wedding vendors and only showcases one vendor per category at each show. I was not the only designer showcase; we had the honor of featuring Therez Fleetwood, Cassandra Broomfield, to mention a few. QSM: What sets you apart from other bridal designers? Nicky: Unlike traditional bridal salons, my gowns are custom created to the bride’s measurements and they are deliver in a shorter period. No two dresses are alike, as each bride has the opportunity to make her dress uniquely her own. QSM: Now one would probably say “Nicky, what do you know about plus size”? What do you say to them? Nicky: I launch the plus size line because a saw an opportunity to provide brides-to-be with dresses that not only fit them but that they will like. More importantly I felt that I could relate in some ways, if I, a size 2 have a hard time finding a dress that fits without having to alter it; I can only imagine the frustration in trying to find a large size dress. Statistic shows that 67% of American women were plus size, meaning size 14 and above, more surprising is that only 18% of clothing sold was plus size (2016 market research report published by NPD Group), and only 6% of bridal boutiques carry plus size samples. Again, these are small sized dresses that are just extended to be sold to a plus size bride. We custom make each dress, we do not order an extended version from China. All of our dresses are custom made in the USA, made in America. QSM: Do you have a brick & mortar or do you design out of your home? Nicky: I have a brick & mortar studio and bridal boutique in Chandler, Arizona. All of my dresses are made on site, and brides can come in to our boutique to see our latest designs, as well as to be measured for their dream gown. QSM: Do you also design prom gowns or other designs outside of the bridal realm? Nicky: Our brand caters to brides and bridesmaids, and a very unique line of flower girl’s dresses. However, we do have an exclusive client base that I design formal wear

27

for red carpet events in Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, and fundraising events here in Scottsdale. QSM: When someone purchases a Nicky Mayers original what should they expect to get? Nicky: We pride ourselves on using top of the line materials, and your gown will not only be the gown of your dreams, but every piece of the gown will be impeccably constructed to your body size, and our attention to detail is second to none. QSM: In an industry that where it is about being unique and detailed how do you stay motivated and where does your inspiration for designs come from? Nicky: This is truly my passion, and my calling, and I am thinking, sketching, and reviewing designs 24-7! QSM: If someone from another state was interested in a gown from you, what is that process like? Nicky: The Fit is the most important thing in my design process. To ensure that the dress will fit, a muslin (fabric) pattern is created and ship to customer, a video conference is schedule to facilitate fitting process. Once the muslin pattern is return, the actual gown is manufactured and ship to customer. QSM: What is next from you? Nicky: We are actively looking for space to open up a flagship boutique on the East Coast. QSM: Any final thoughts and where can people follow and see your work? Nicky: I use a lot of social media, and my Instagram, and Facebook pages are constantly being updated. Our website is stunning, and our new line will be featured on it shortly. Of course, come on out to our studio boutique in Arizona, but we are actively working with small bridal boutiques across the USA to showcase our line, and to arrange trunk shows. I am building my business and my brand, so I will travel to do trunk shows, and pop up stores, and we are even coming out with a small scale franchise bridal salon model that will help aspiring women entrepreneurs enter the retail market with our lines.

BRIDAL BEAUTY INSIDE OUT By: Crystal Carmen, Beauty Editor Say, “I Do” to beautiful skin on your wedding day with these 3 Mega Tips! Your wedding day will be one of the most memorable days for the rest of your life. Even if it turns out to not be such a great day, and I hope the day is more beautiful than you could have imagined, glowing skin must be a constant in your photos. Bridal beauty is just as important as everything else and I’ve created a list of quick tips for clear skin and a beat that’ll last long after you’re carried over the threshold. First things first, quench the thirst! Your skin is the largest organ of the body and measures about 20 sq. feet. We don’t often see skin as important as the heart or the liver, but just like your other vital organs, your skin needs to be fed and nourished in order to thrive and there’s nothing else it loves more than water. I’m not talking about water with lemon, cucumbers, or limes. I’m talking about straight up water only! Water keeps the skin from shriveling meaning wrinkles and sagging are out and firm youthful skin is in. Now, before you start chugging jugs of water, I want you to know that are some dangers in drinking too much water. There are different theories as to how much water you should drink a day being that too much water can dilute your natural sodium levels and cause hyponatremia (water poisoning).

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2018 ISSUE

It is recommended that you drink water in the amount of half your weight in ounces and scientists recommend drinking at least 2.2 liters a day. Whatever you decide, make sure that you’re only drinking 30 ounces or just under 1 liter per hour and no more than 5 gallons a day to be safe. Since we’ve got that squared away, here’s what you really want to know, you can expect to see a dramatic change in your skin texture and tone within 4 weeks and as long you continue to keep water in your system, your skin will just about stay the same for years to come. If you absolutely detest water, make it fun by including your bridesmaids in a water glow challenge or you can even psych yourself out with a darling wedding water bottle from the Slant collection from The Paperstore. Believe it or not, as you make drinking water a habit, your body will crave it and you’ll actually begin to love it, but for now, just drink that h2o for your wedding glow without thinking about it.

BRIDAL BEAUTY INSIDE AND OUT | CRYSTAL CARMEN

FACIALS! Next up are facials! Have you ever seen a celebrity with a full face of makeup, but you could tell that their skin was absolutely gorgeous underneath? Well, they didn’t get that kind of skin with just the normal cleansing routine of a cleanser and a moisturizer! Instead, they include facials with high quality products as part of their normal skincare routine and as you can tell, it works. Facials assist in blood circulation, which renews the skin and therefore, slows down aging while bringing out the pretty in your complexion. The only thing you must do is to make sure that you schedule your facial, at the spa or at home, 2 weeks before your big day! It’s possible that some of products and exfoliation scrubs may cause some irritation, which may cause redness. Not only can the products and finger pressure really work the skin, but two weeks is a good amount of time to see the full results of your skin treatment. Of course, if you haven’t included your wedding day facial in your budget and since reading this there’s just no more room, you can always opt to go for what you know at home with a facial sauna and some customized products just for your skin from Lush Cosmetics.

MAKEUP! Here comes the fun.. with a mock makeup trial! Does everyone agree that your wedding day makeup is almost as important as your ring or gown? It has to go hand in hand with everything else or it can take the attention away from your entire look. Do some research in your area for local makeup artists on Google, Instagram and Facebook. You’ll get to see pictures of their work and their base clients.

After you’ve decided on a makeup artist, schedule a trial run within two weeks from the wedding date, but make sure that it’s at least a few days after your facial. If you’re just not satisfied with who’s in your area, you still have other options: Fly out a mid to high profile makeup artist like Crystal Carmen (me! ) for your day. You’d be surprised to find out how willing your favorite makeup artist is to provide you with their services. All you have to do is send them an email asking for their terms and fees. Most will require a deposit to reserve the date and that the balance be paid in full prior to their arrival. Visit the cosmetics counters in the mall and retail cosmetic stores. Stores and brands like Sephora, MAC, or even Bobbi Brown will provide trial makeup services for a nominal fee or for free. This gives you the freedom to decide whether or not you love your look, allows time to request changes, and gives the opportunity to possibly meet your newly hired makeup artist ahead of time. Due to the varying levels of experience and application not every beauty counter result will be favorable. Shop around or hire someone you trust. Last but not least, be sure to keep your most important makeup products to refresh throughout the day. You’ll need a small makeup bag to hold gloss or lipstick, a brush or two for refreshing powder, and a blush and/or contour palette. Whatever you do, don’t leave skincare and makeup as “something you’ll figure out later”! Be sure to include these services and products in your wedding planning and budget just like everything else on your wedding to-do list.

y name is Jenna Lee and I’ve been a plus model, blogger and social media influencer for a little over two years. I got into modeling after challenging myself to be more confident in all aspects of my life. I began to realize all the opportunities I was missing out on and had missed out on in the past. Things I envisioned myself doing, but dismissed as a reality because of the state of my self-esteem. In late 2015, I read an article on plus modeling simply by chance. It was the first time I saw women that looked like me, modeling clothes I could actually wear! It was an eye opening moment for me. Sometimes you need to see something visually for the spark to ignite. I started following these women on Instagram and was so inspired. I had a personal page but at that moment, I decided making a public page for myself would be the challenge I needed to face my own fears and doubts. I did just that. Pictures of myself in clothing I would never permit myself to wear because of it possibly making people uncomfortable. And it’s important to note that I did not tell any family or friends about my new page or idea. That really helped me because it saved me the judgment of friends and family that in reality, isn’t always positive. This page was my space and I didn’t want any outside influence to restrict that. From there, I started to get requests from brands to model for them. Photographers to shoot, and brand ambassadorships with some amazing people. My first professional shoot was in early 2016 and I immediately fell in love with how being in front of the camera made me feel. My confidence levels were so much higher, my self-worth was getting to where it needed to be, and I was feeling beautiful after years of feeling not good enough.

My journey is still continuing and evolving but I don’t have a single regret about taking that first step towards leading a more confident lifestyle. Now I look to inspire others to do the same because we are all worthy of self-love, and I don’t want to see people to waste the time I did feeling negatively about themselves. Everyone deserves more than that.

One little trick I like to do with an old highlighter that has fallen out of the pan, is mix a small amount in my liquid foundation to add a bronze goddess effect for a summer glow. You do not have to go out and buy all new products just revamp the ones you have. So go and pull out those old palettes and lipsticks and create something new. The future is looking colorful so have some fun! Beautifully crafted, Lala Faces

amie Lopez is the CEO and owner Of Babydoll Beauty Couture Salon located in Las Vegas Nevada. The Most Glamorous Salon Experience For The Plus Size Woman! The 500 pound beauty icon with a powerful golden pop voice. She is also just recently opened the only BBW nightclub in Las Vegas for plus size women called Club Babydoll now located inside Alexis park resort. She’s a huge trendsetter for plus size women of the world, beaconing that their dreams are reachable, if they never give up! It’s with this fearless bravado that Jamie intends to take over the world of music, beauty, and fashion while redefining each of those areas. Jamie plans to break the mold and is poised for greatness with big dreams ahead. There has never been such a triple threat whose size does not hold her back from accomplishing her dreams! As a young child Jamie began singing at the age of five. Then by the 4th grade she took the courageous steps to walk on stage, winning first prize in her very first talent show, by singing Mariah Carey’s “Hero”. Needless to say, Jamie has gone on to conquer many talent shows due to her lovely voice, with an ever growing fan base that now includes over 120 thousand followers on social media. Among her fans, she literally is contacted by thousands of big women who resonate with her story, struggles and triumphs. Mariah Carey still continues to be a musical hero and influence of sorts for the young Latin singer. Ironically if you listen to Lopez’s lush vocals close enough one can hear shades of an early Mariah Carey. Aside from being a fantastic vocalist, CEO and Entrepreneur, Jamie Lopez is also a budding songwriter penning personal lyrics in which the pop singer is not afraid to be brash, bold, sexy and daring. While working on her most recent single “Diva” which she co-wrote, Jamie recounts how the song, “was inspired after a horrible break up I went through with my cheating ex-boyfriend that put me in a very dark place for a while! I found my strength and remembered who I am! And I’m back better and stronger than ever!” It is with that kind of raw magnitude and perseverance to overcome the odds that Jamie approaches each obstacle in life. So where does Jamie see herself in 5 years? “I see myself winning a Grammy opening Multiple Babydoll Beauty Couture Salon’s And Club Babydoll’s worldwide, and changing the way the world sees beauty”. With such a positive attitude, Jamie is more than likely to meet those goals and a whole lot more. “One of the many reasons I opened my salon was due to a horrible experience I encountered going to a salon being discriminated against, looked at, stared at, laughed at, and actually breaking a chair which made me never want to go back to a salon again!! I thought to myself I know I’m not the only big woman who goes through this and I wanted to do something about it, so saved all my money, sacrificed years of putting up with a horrible negative work environment and finally I saved enough money to make my dreams come true!! Super excited to have opened Club Babydoll The only plus size night club in Las Vegas!! Where I can glam up my beauties who haven’t been to a salon in years. Beauties who suffer from low self-esteem, haven’t had a date in such a long time take them to an upscale gorgeous environment where they can put on a sexy dress and be adored by the men who love their curves!! The Legacy that I want to leave behind is that all women are beautiful no matter what size they are I never let anything get in the way of your dreams especially your weight!! Super excited for the future all I do is for us!

QSM: I remember scrolling through social media and seeing an article about you and your salon. If caught my attention and I was in awe; I had to read it. I read about your incident with the chair breaking underneath you. Can you tell us about that ordeal for you? Jamie: That incident really put the icing on the cake for me and pushed me to open my First establishment. I remember getting my hair done with my hairstylist Honey at sheer illusion salon in Chatsworth California; walking in greeting her sitting down and the chair loudly broke!! All eyes were on me, staring at me; I did not leave, I stayed in the broken chair, got my hair done and never went back. My hairstylist really calmed me down and told me things are going to be OK but that really mortified me. I decided enough was enough and I felt the need to do something about it for the big girls of the world. And thus Babydoll Beauty Couture was Born.

QSM: What can people expect when they go into your salon? Jamie: people can expect to be greeted by my friendly beauty team, treated like a queen in a very royal like environment. We serve cupcakes, Mimosas, wine and fruit. We really relax you and get you in your element so you have the most amazing experience. We are full-service salon with chairs holding up to 800 pounds and custom-made wax benches. Everything is absolutely beautiful; I put my heart and soul into this dream and spared no expense for my clients. QSM: How long have you been in business so far? And how is it going? Jamie: 2018 makes five years and it’s going very well; the feedback I get is phenomenal. People come into to the salon that haven’t been to a salon in over 25 years. The press is amazing; people fly from all over the world just to come here. We are now working on a reality show; super excited about that. QSM: Does your salon also cater to the big and tall men? Can they come in and get a cut, manis, pedis? Jamie? Absolutely we get men all the time! They love getting manis, pedis, facials and waxing. Most of my girls are Cosmo’s and specialize in barbering, so that’s always fun! QSM: What do you say to people who may think that you are promoting obesity? Jamie: People hate to see happy confident fat people, so they absolutely try to tear me down. People have asked me “if a chair broke under you why would you open a Plus size friendly salon? Why wouldn’t you just lose weight and fix the problem?” .... Well my answer to that is no matter if I’m working on myself or not, I still want to place to feel glamorous. And it’s not going to happen overnight, so in the meantime I have a place where I can get glamorous in a positive friendly environment and not have to feel ashamed to get my toes done or to get a waxing because everybody is staring at me when I walk in; I can feel safe. That’s not promoting obesity, that’s creating a safe haven. And if anyone has a problem with my weight they can look the other way because I’m here!

QSM: What do you suggest to people who may be experiencing the same thing that you have, but do not live in your area? Jamie: My suggestion to them is to remain confident, love themselves and get on a plane and come see me; I’ll take care of them! I will also be doing some makeup classes and YouTube tutorials for all the people who want to see the inside of the salon and have a little taste of the Babydoll Experience. QSM: You also sell clothing correct? Do make the clothing? Jamie: I absolutely do! I have been making clothing since I was a teenager because I’ve been big all my life and there was never any trendy fashions for a plus size girls like me. I made my own prom dress and I was the prom queen. I design High End Couture For The Plus Size Woman along with swim wear lingerie and Faux Fur Coats www. babydollcoutureglam.com QSM: What else do you have under your sleeve? I have been doing some research and you are looking like a one stop shop for the plus size divas? Jamie: It absolutely is, we are full-service salon with everything in mind for plus size women. Stay tune because there is so much more to come and I’m super excited about the future. QSM: I am very proud of you and all that you have accomplished. Keep up the great work. Please leave our readers with some encouraging words and let everyone know where they can follow you. Jamie: Thank you so very much that means the world to me to be living my dream. I have made tremendous sacrifices to get where I am today and I am starting to see everything was worth it. Never give up on your dreams and always follow your passion no matter what anyone says or how many people doubt you and your vision. Stay tune for so much more and please follow our social media accounts @babydollbeautycouture on IG and Facebook I love you all and thank you so much for supporting my journey xoxo jlo WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| JUNE 2018 ISSUE

STILL ARRIVING By: Joy Pittman

“L

ife is a journey, not a destination” (insert eye roll and long sigh here). Whoever coined this phrase likely intended to be motivational and evoke feelings of empowerment and encouragement.

Whelp.. I am not sure if it’s a result of myself diagnosed OCD, my inclination to over achieve or my preference for a full glass (because let’s face it half full or half empty it still half), but no matter how many times I have heard the aforementioned quote it has never changed my belief that there was a place I was supposed to be professionally, personally, socially, romantically, physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially and it never made me feel better about not being “THERE” The truth is there is some relief in the idea of being “THERE”. Reaching a destination denotes a degree of finality and completion. So the idea that life was a never ending journey created a major anxiety for this girl... That anxiety either manifested through or was triggered by (still unpacking that part) a little voice in my head that kept asking... “are we there yet? No matter how much black girl magic, girl power, or curvy courage I sprinkled, conjured or mustered I could not figure out how to quiet that voice. “Are we there yet?” The question haunted me. It made me defensive, made me feel like an imposter and talked me out of engaging, doing and eventually even trying. The question was a reminder that despite my efforts I was still not there and my not being THERE made me unworthy... unworthy of happiness and of being great.

I’m not sure what prompted it but one day I decided to engage the little voice... to at minimum entertain the inquiry in an intelligent way...mainly with the hope that a response would make the voice go away. “Are we there yet?” ... But where was THERE? I realized in that moment that the little voice was not my enemy... it was actually an audible manifestation of my girl power and curvy courage challenging me to be intentional about my journey, to do the work of really thinking about what THERE represented in all areas of my life. In the months since that moment the answer to the question... where is there... has evolved. And contrary to my original hope the little voice did not disappear. However I am now able to answer the voice... no we are not THERE yet, we are STILL ARRIVING. “STILL ARRIVING.” Those two words, in my assessment, give me, you, us permission to.... (insert whatever thing(s) you have felt ineligible to begin), and to do so without the guilt, fear or reservation. My process of arriving has afforded me the opportunity to join the team at Queen Size Magazine. In so doing I have been able to explore my ability as a plus size model (the jury is still out on this), engage my love for hair, makeup and fashion, and most recently to share my experiences, my social conscious, and my voice. I’m STILL learning, STILL growing STILL ARRIVING, and my guess is you are too. Soooo I have an idea, let’s do it together. Join me each month, right here in Queen Size Magazine, for this amazing journey of... STILL ARRIVING!
