FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief Welcome to the June 2019 issue of Queen Size Magazine. We are almost halfway through the year. YIKES! Who wants to think about THAT? I often remind you all in my letters to you how quickly times goes by. Who remembers when I was just complaining about the snow? LOL Anywho… This Confidence Issue is dedicated to all of the beautiful and handsome human beings walking around standing tall and living proudly in their confidence. A lot of us share some of the same stories and struggles. Many stories that include the struggle to find and accept ourselves. I remember growing up I hated how I looked; not just my body but my whole appearance. I have suffered traumatic experiences in my life that may have contributed to how I looked at myself, but the struggle was there nonetheless. It wasn’t until I turned 30 years old (some years ago lol) that I learned to accept who I was. And then I had to learn to love this body of mine; the body that had been abused by others and neglected by me. I remember a friend of mine asking me what I wanted people to see when they looked at me, and I could not answer the question. She then went on to ask me what I wanted to see when I looked at myself. That was an even harder question because I had no idea. But what it did was give me a starting point. I knew what I had to do and where I had to start; INSIDE OF ME. See your beauty and your confidence is not superficial. Your beauty and confidence are what is on the inside, and then it radiates out. When people look at you, you want them to see you for the beautiful person that you. THAT, my lovely readers, is CONFIDENCE. LIVE HAPPILY IN IT! Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

6 NUTRITION TRENDS AND FADS EXPLAINED

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2019 ISSUE

NUTRITION TRENDS AND FADS | BRANDPOINT

9

The expanded variety of health and wellness options available today can be confusing for consumers who are trying to learn all they can to make the most informed, healthy choices for themselves and their families. Below, Dr. Nicole Avena, assistant professor of neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and visiting professor of health psychology at Princeton University, explains six popular nutrition trends including sustainable snacks, new plant-based milks, prebiotics and probiotics and the latest on gummy supplements vs. traditional vitamins: 1. When it comes to a caffeine buzz, choose matcha over coffee. A premium green tea powder from Japan, matcha is used for drinking as tea or as an ingredient in recipes. While coffee and matcha have about the same amount of caffeine, matcha packs lots of great antioxidants. Check the label to make sure it has been tested for heavy metals, as some matcha can contain lead from the soil where it was grown. 2. Shelf-stable probiotics have some advantages over refrigerated. Only two strains of probiotics are shelf-stable, whereas different and diverse strains can be present in refrigerated probiotics. But, shelf-stable probiotics have the advantage that they can be used in other food products, like granolas, butter, soups, etc. Just don’t mess with the packaging or open blister packs until you want to use them, as they are packed for preservation. Dead probiotics won’t harm you, but they don’t have any health benefits either. Remember there are different probiotic strains for different issues: i.e., you don’t want to take a digestive or immunity probiotic for vaginal health issues. Instead, try Pro-B as it contains two strains of lactobacilli, which are optimal to promote vaginal health. 3. Algae oil trumps fish oil and olive oil. Algae oil is vegetarian and a source of omega-3s and DHA (good fats to support brain health). Algae oil is safe to use in pregnancy (when eating too much fish can be harmful because of mercury) and is heart healthy (studies show it lowers cholesterol and triglycerides). It also has more monounsaturated fat than olive oil. 4. Cow’s milk is healthier than almond milk. Despite its popularity, almond milk often has less than 2 percent actual almonds in it, has a lot of added sugar, and is not necessarily better for the environment because it takes five liters of water to grow one almond. 5. 1000 mcg’s of Folate with vitamin D and calcium is essential in a prenatal vitamin. The nutrients in your prenatal vitamins are crucial pre- and postpartum, especially if you are breastfeeding. 6. Gummy vitamins are just as effective as pills and chewables. The best way to get needed nutrients is through food, but, people don’t always have eating habits that provide them with all the nutrition they need. Others have deficiencies that diet alone can’t resolve. Supplements can fill the gap, but people are more likely to take their supplements regularly if they taste good and they’re convenient. Pills require a liquid to take them with, they’re not tasty and sometimes leave an unpleasant aftertaste! Gummies can be a good option, and clinical tests show that their absorption is equivalent or better than traditional vitamin pills. vitafusion offers more than 30 types of gummy vitamins, with no artificial flavors, high fructose corn syrup, gluten or dairy. Nicole Avena, Ph.D., is a research neuroscientist and pioneer in the field of food and nutrition. She is also the author of What to Eat When You’re Pregnant. article by BrandPoint WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| JUNE 2019 ISSUE

Are You Doing Enough To Protect Your Skin From The Sun? Think you’re doing enough to protect your skin from the sun? Don’t be so sure. Experts say that many people assume their sun protection routine is sufficient when it’s not.

“While summer is an excellent reminder that sun protection is a vital component of health and wellness, it’s actually necessary all year round and under circumstances you may not realize,” says Florida-based dermatologist, Dr. Richard C. Kirkpatrick.

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN | STATEPOINT

Here are a few things to keep in mind: • Makeup may not be enough: If your makeup contains SPF 15, don’t assume you’re covered. Luckily, there are sun protection options today that leave a matte finish and won’t mess with your cosmetics routine. For example, an easy-to-apply, clear matte finish layer of broadspectrum protection under your makeup, such as Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50, will add needed protection while nourishing skin. • Think in all-day terms: Many people mistakenly believe they receive most of their sun exposure from going to the beach. It’s all too easy to underestimate the damage to skin from daily incidental sun exposure, which accumulates and prematurely ages skin. Whether you’re driving and catching rays through the window, or walking the dog in the morning, be mindful that you’re getting sun exposure and take necessary precautions. • Think in all-year terms: Again, summertime does provide a visceral reminder of the importance of sun protection and is an excellent time of year to develop a sun protection habit, but don’t let this be the only time of year you think about protecting skin. Take a cue from the summer you, and apply sun protection all year. • Make it easy: One of the toughest aspects of applying sun protection is remembering to do it. But if it’s with you, you’ll use it. Toss some in your purse or bag. A good portable option is Ocean Potion Dab-On Spot Stick SPF 50, which provides on-the-spot broad-spectrum protection in an oil-free formula, and like all Ocean Potion products it is enriched with deep-sea minerals, seaweed, algae extracts, aloe vera, and antioxidant vitamins B, C and E to replenish and nourish your skin. • Like your choice: Doing the right thing for your skin shouldn’t be a chore or create different skin care issues. So be sure you like your choice of sun protection. Look for options that won’t clog pores, are lightweight and offer easy application. • Take care of yourself and the planet: Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are chemical ingredients used in certain sun protection that are considered to be harmful to coral reefs. But you can select a sunscreen like Ocean Potion Sport SPF 50 that’s Oxybenzone- and Octinoxate-free and not tested on animals, a win-win for you and the planet. With no parabens, PABA, or retinyl palmitate, it offers a lightweight, non-greasy menthol formula with a cooling sensation. From poolside and beachside bathing to a walk around the block, this summer, create a daily sun protection routine that you take with you everywhere you go.

If someone would have told me I would be starting a career in modeling, commercials at this point in my life I would be like no way. That answer would come from other people’s ideas of what I should be doing instead. Once I got out of my own way everything flowed. I truly believe timing is everything. We are fortunate to be in a time where all shapes and sizes are beginning to be seen. I wanted to be a model to be a part of show casing that diversity and inclusion in fashion and marketing. I want to represent that curvy, plus size women can be whatever we want. We are smart, strong and active and sexy and fun. All ethnic groups all sexual orientations should be represented. There were not a lot of images or ads when I was growing up that were relatable. I want my work to make people feel free. To know they don’t need to be fit in anyone’s standards for what they should look like. I have been a lot heavier, I have been lighter and none of those numbers define me. I want people to feel inspired not to look like me or any other person but to see how cool it is to look like them. Love Yourself and the rest will shine outward.

AVENUE’S SPRING CONFIDENCE CAMPAIGN Confidence is a core value of the Avenue brand and we love what we are seeing from the brand. They are doing a great job listening to what their customers want and then providing it for her. They have created avenue.com/ wearelistening as a place that she can go and share her feedback with the brand. How cool is that! Some of you may have recalled that last blog we wrote when we learned of Avenue’s Confidence Campaign. We were excited and we still are. I have always loved the Avenue brand. At one point in my life, it was the only place I knew to go for clothes that fit me. As I began learning of other brands, I still never shied away from Avenue. So to hear that they have been listening to some of the suggestions from their customers is quite refreshing. When I spoke to Nancy Viall, who is the Chief Merchandising Officer over at Avenue, she told me that some of the things the customers were asking for were “Consistent fits, better quality and more on trend fashions”. And because there are so many body types in the world, to make everyone happy she said that they had to upgrade the fit and find that sweet spot to fit the many different body types, and then they had to be consistent with it. Pretty on point to me! Avenue is on a mission to celebrate and promote the confidence that we as plus size women are standing so proudly in. Y’all know that this wasn’t always our story. So when you have brands that are creating clothing for you to

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2019 ISSUE

be happy in, be confident in, and be 100% YOU in… we must celebrate. The fact that they put their clothing through such an intense process before they can get that Aveology Seal of Excellence in fit says that they care. And I for one appreciate that. One of the reasons why I love this brand so much is because they are relatable. When I spoke with Steve Silbaugh who is the Chief Marketing Officer, we compared stories about our own personal journeys. I must admit, I am used to speaking with women about these struggles but in speaking with Steve I realized how much in common we have. While our wellness and fitness journeys are slightly different, he understands and can relate to his customers about not being able to find quality clothing that fit. We talked about him growing up and not being able to wear certain brands of clothing like some of his friends because they did not fit him properly. These are testimonies that we are hearing more and more from men. Now I don’t know about you but I would prefer to shop from brands that can relate to my struggles. Of course, they found some of the dopest and most relatable women in the industry to be the faces of the Confidence Campaign. Meet The Confidence Campaign features Yasmine Arrington, Jill Angie, and Madeline Jones.

SWIMSUITS OF TIME Splash, pop, ahhh are the beautiful sounds that someone is near a cool sandy beach of turquoise, bright blue water. So this only means that someone or people are in their best poolside, beachwear and or swimwear. We know that spring has arrived and summer is trying to make a debut for all to feel. Have you ever used the terms bathing suit and or swimsuit and never seem to question yourself what is the difference? Well, according to history, shhh Wikipedia, the term “bathing” was the term used for swimming, more accurately for playing in water. The term swimsuit was not used until late 1800s. Since this time people have called it bathing suit due to that people would play in water with full clothing when attending any recreational swim events. This was the design “bathing suit”, some decades ago! Yes, gasp for air! WOW! Aren’t you glad you live in the era where swimsuits have evolved tremendously over decades? I AM SURELY GLAD! In reality there are no difference in the two just a slight meaning. What is about swimwear now that people are more willing to showcase less to nothing when swimming! Well, I am glad you ask! Dipping into the cool water with so many garments in the water can really drag one down, for we all know, so designers today have really stepped their designing game up to match all body types and cause us all to stay a float! Some have really taking the time to match the look of all sizes, and to give women confidence in wearing such silhouette clothing.

Divining into full swimsuits has become a designer playground. The ruching, the tassels, the prints, the bright and vibrant colors are so magnifying that who wouldn’t want to wear such alluring swimsuits. The configuration of a swimsuit has evolved where the top can give you more and fuller look. The straps can be removable giving your swimsuit a halter to a semi-strap look. The arrangement of the swimsuit around the abdominal area can give you that slender and accentuating look and feel. The bottom can be padded to give your “derriere” that extra look. No matter your size the structure of a full swimsuit can make you feel very attractive and beautiful. Yes, prices ranges for more detailing and sophisticated looks, so when shopping for the best full body suit remember what you’re looking for, so you can get your moneys worth. Splashing into two-piece or “bikini”: I am a fan of the bikini. The look, the style, and the way you can mix and match your twopieces without looking boring all summer long. Unlike the full size swimsuit, you are exposing more around much “sensitive” area, the abdominal. Designers have to take in many considerations that not all bust are made the same, so unlike smaller women, larger bust women need more support from beneath. The tops to the bikini are made more sensitive over times for larger bust women. You many want to look into wiring for the bust, may have to look into certain fabric that clings more to holding the “girls nicely, and or both. When choosing from the bottom of the two-piece there are so many types. Many women may choose a high-waisted bottom that will give a clean look around the abdominal area, smooth out our bottom, and curve low right at the top area. Then there is a hipster look. The hipster style is where it clings at the abdominal and hip. You have a choice of going full or slightly bare. Then you have cheeky bottoms where your bottom is all out, almost going slight commando. There are many more different types of bottoms to choose from, just knowing your style and comfortable level when selecting you bikini will make our day at the poolside perfect! Time to dry off! Times have change since the dawning of the old decades of “bathing suit.” Now the choices are endless and swimsuit will never be the same!

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT | CUTTING EDJ LLC

45

QSM: Where did this passion to start designing clothing come from? Elyse: I have always been into fashion, but designing actually started off as a joke between my best friend and I; A joke that turned into a passion and career.

QSM: What is your overall goal for Cutting EDJ LLC? Elyse: To become one of the world dopest plus size designers known. Showing women that they can achieve the impossible with their wardrobe, if they are willing to step outside of the box.

QSM: What was the first piece you ever made? Tell us about that. Elyse: My very first piece was an African Print Maxi Skirt. I was so nervous because I didn’t know if my client was going to like it, if it was the right size and if it was going to last. At that time I didn’t have a serger (really, I didn’t know what a serger was), so I wasn’t sure if the skirt was going to even hold up.

QSM: What are some of your favorite pieces to design? Do you have lie a signature piece? Elyse: My favorite pieces are any of the pieces that my clients or models let me have free range on. The pieces that allow me to show my creative side.

QSM: Well alright! Lol. We have to start somewhere right? As you know, this industry is saturated with designers; how do you make yourself stand out from the rest? Elyse: I try to focus on 1 aspect and stick to it. That is Plus Size Custom. Don’t get me wrong, I will customize for anyone willing to pay; but as far as collections, pieces, shows and shoots, they are all created for curvy women. QSM: You are more than just a designer though. Tell us about some of your other skills. Elyse: Who am I? I am a Wardrobe Stylist and Image Coach, and I also work in the Social Work field. QSM: Who are your clients and how do you find them? Elyse: My clients are everybody men, women, and children. Everywhere I go I network, but a lot of my clients come from other clients. Whether it be my models, or previous clients that constantly promote me. QSM: Tell us about the name Cutting EDJ LLC and how you came up with it? Elyse: Well in cosmetology school, hair cutting was my favorite thing to do because of the excitement of the “new look” especially when it’s a look that takes the client out of their comfort zone. “EDJ” (pronounced EDGE) is actually my initials (thanks mom) So Cutting EDJ means the development of something new… the new normal QSM: That is so dope!!!! Is your merchandise found in stores or online? Elyse: Not yet, I’m currently working on doing some production, but all of my pieces are customized to order. QSM: Do you also work a 9-5 job or is this it for you? Elyse: I recently have rejoined the workforce. I will still run my business, but I definitely miss the interaction will my work clients too.

QSM: Where do you pull your inspiration from? Elyse: Everywhere honestly. QSM: Do you come from a family of designers or are you the only one? Elyse: I am the only designer. I get my creativeness from my father and my grandmother, but I am the only designer. I am self-taught, everything I know I learned from watching tutorials and doing a lot of research. QSM: Looking at other designers, what would you say is your biggest pet peeve with what they do or don’t do? Elyse: I have a few but I won’t go on a rant. I would say my biggest issue with other designers is the lack of support. We are all out here doing the same thing, striving for the same or similar goals. There is no need to tear someone else down in order to build yourself up. What’s meant for you will be for you. QSM: What would you say are some of your biggest challenges as a designer? Elyse: My biggest challenge so far has been myself. Trying to remember not to compare myself or my work to others that I see. QSM: Where are your located? Elyse: Columbus, Ohio QSM: I have seen some of your work; very impressive and original. Where can people find you and check out some of your work? Elyse: Social Media of Course. Instagram: @cuttingedjstylist Facebook: (personal) Elyse Jones (business) www.facebook. com/cuttingedjstylist QSM: Thank you Elyse for your time in chatting with us. We wish you continued success. Elyse: Thank You So Much for this opportunity!

UPGRADE YOUR SPACE WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK Whether you rent or own, a happy home means finding distinctive ways to continuously improve your space. A full renovation or re-design can be pricey, but making your home feel fresh and current doesn’t have to be. We’ve thought through cost-effective solutions to make your home a place you love.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2019 ISSUE

UPGRADING YOUR SPACE | BRANDPOINT 1) Measure your moolah: Understanding the budget is a crucial first step to any home project and money can be a sensitive subject. To conquer the awkwardness, download a finance app to get a sense of your spending habits. This will give you an accurate measure of how much moolah you have to spend on your home, and could help you save a buck or two on overall spending as well. 2) Score some smart solutions: Once you understand the budget, invest in smart solutions to have the place feeling fresh and updated in no time. If you’re interested in smart temperature control, check with your local energy provider to see if they offer incentive programming or kickbacks for making the switch! Easy changes like Bluetooth-connected plugs, meat thermometers and smart lightbulbs will use less energy and make you more connected to your home. 3) Swap that showerhead: If you’re looking for more of a visual change, swap out a faucet or showerhead - an easy but impactful update regardless of rent/own status. Brands like Peerless Faucet make products specifically designed to be on trend, but easy to manage. As long as you select a faucet that matches the current setup of your countertop (e.g., single handle or double handle, with or without soap dispenser), you can swap out any standard faucet for one that matches your vibe. From the kitchen to the bathroom, investing in a few key pieces for your home will last you a lifetime, especially if you pick multi-functional pieces like the SideKick Shower System.

thought out of having home supplies at the ready, under your sink, whenever you need them. If you’re looking for a simple upgrade, you can receive art that matches your style or fresh flowers. There is a subscription for almost everything and, when used strategically, they are a great way to manage your spending while investing in your space. 5) Spark joy with spring cleaning: Speaking of cleaning, when you make the switch to your summer wardrobe and your annual spring clean, take the time to assess what, as Marie Kondo would say, sparks joy versus what has seen better days. By taking ownership of what must stay, and saying thank you and goodbye to things that are ready to go, your belongings won’t feel like a burden, because everything will have a purpose. When you begin to spring clean, think through new methods of determining what should stay and what should go. Once you’ve done these things, if you are looking for more, below are some quick fixes: * Add new fabrics (e.g., cushions, curtains, throw blankets) in the living area and bedroom. * Create an accent wall with adhesive wallpaper. * Hang mirrors to create an illusion of a larger space and spread light throughout the space. * Go green, add plants.

4) Try subscription solutions: An easy way to spruce up your tables, walls and cabinets is by signing up for subscription services that take the thinking out of upkeep. There are a number of practical subscriptions you can opt in to, like FilterEasy, a service that sends you filters for your HVAC exactly when you need them. Or, if cleaning supplies are something you continuously forget to buy, subscription services take the
