FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the June 2021 issue of Queen Size Magazine. For the past year, most of us have been cooped up at home afraid to venture outdoors because of the “C” word. This pandemic has had most of us either grieving or fearing for our own lives; myself included. Many people have either gotten vaccinated, waiting to get vaccinated, absolutely against it or still on the fence. What am I doing you ask? I recently decided that I am going to go ahead and get vaccinated. But I said all of that to say, I recently spent a day in Times Square with friends that I hadn’t seen in years. It reminded me of how bad I want to go back to some normalcy. I want to go out and have fun; I am tired of hiding out in the house. I am sure most of the world is feeling the same way. From my family to yours, whatever you decide to do, please just be smart and be safe. Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

BEAUTY AND FASHION Sharmeeka Miller, a North East Washington DC native, is now the third Ms. Exquisite Full Figured DMV Queen. Teacher’s assistant by day, mother, sister, friend, leader, and businesswoman by night. Sharmeeka has a passion for children especially those who have challenging difficulties. When trying to catch a break from life’s demands, she enjoys music and walks in the park. Soothing walks provide much-needed peace of mind after giving my undivided attention to our future leaders of tomorrow. With everything going on in today’s society, she believes self-care with meditation is important to keep a sound mind, body, and soul. Inside our closed doors we must find some peace to keep us going. As the 2020 Exquisite Queen, she has been busy upholding her title along with chasing her dreams with her business. Promoting Unyielding Directions (P.U.D) is a successful upcoming business venture alongside her cousin and business partner. P.U.D. is a women’s group specializing in empowering, not wavering in your goals and dreams. Since her crowning, PUD has taken off tremendously. Making herself known to a new platform embracing all kinds of women and communities has helped her put the word out even more. Since the September pageant, PUD has honored three beautiful Breast Cancer survivors (women) by delivering them with selfcare baskets, connected with several women entrepreneurs to promote their new businesses, partnered with a women’s Fitness group to show a healthy lifestyle, partnerships with Sasha Bruce’s Youth work and also hosted a Sock and Sanitizer drive during the holidays.

Moving forward, PUD is working on revamping a new virtual book club social meeting in April and most importantly starting a mentorship program adopting a youth home in Washington DC. As the first-year anniversary approaches PUD, she is looking to work closely with her business partner with a Women’s Forum leading platforms that highlight women’s perspectives in the community. “As your reigning Ms. Full Figured DMV Exquisite Queen, this journey has been so exciting knowing that I made/make a difference in women. It is never too late to fulfill a lifelong passion. I know my “Why” and will continue to “Change the Narrative”.

MODEL SPOTLIGHT | QUEEN SHARMEEKA MILLER QSM: Congratulations on winning Ms. Exquisite Full-Figured D.M.V. 2020. I always like to start from the beginning. I like to get to know who people were before they became who they are. Tell me about life for you as a child. Sharmeeka: Today, so many things have changed but my childhood memories are still fresh in my heart. Growing up in the North East area of Washington D.C. I was the youngest sibling of two sisters. I grew up with hard working parents that provided us with the best quality of life. I was a daddy’s girl for sure. I attended DC Public schools where I was very adventurous. I never knew exactly what I wanted to do but I was daring and ready to try it all. I played the violin for a very short time. I always wanted to sing but I was simply too shy to do so, but my passion was wearing that cute cheerleader outfit with my ponytails in elementary school and high school. I always enjoyed reading fashion magazines and watching the latest style on television, music videos etc.

QSM: Is anyone else in your family working in, or have worked in the fashion industry? I am curious about when the fashion bug bit you. Sharmeeka: Growing up my dad working at one of the most popular men’s department stores in the early 70’s until late 90’s, Cavalier’s Men Shop. My dad and uncle made a career as managers and general managers of all the Cavaliers in the DMV area. I would watch how my dad’s team of salesman, seamstresses, and stylists came together and created great styles whether it was a business or every day wear. I was really impressed by the women working at Woodie’s (original name Woodward & Lothrop); they walked in the store looking really nice. My mom and her five sisters were also extremely stylish head. I can’t forget my grandmothers who not only had style but also possessed poise & grace. I guess I can say I grew up surrounded by fashion.

QSM: What challenges would you say you have faced so far on your journey? Sharmeeka: I think my biggest challenge so far was being hit, as we all were, by the pandemic. It was hard and sad at times. But by the Grace Of God I was able to continue my journey. QSM: Has the fact that you won sunk in yet? Sharmeeka: I can honestly say that I haven’t ever won anything before this. I was truly out of league when I decided to enter the Ms. Full -Figured DMV Pageant. As I watched the video announcing me as the Queen, I am still amazed; I keep saying to myself “I really won”. Through blood, sweat and many tears, I worked so hard, and I am so grateful. QSM: What were you feeling when they called your name? Sharmeeka: Can I first say, with all the anticipation, I was so nervous! I was taught to continue smiling even if your name was not called. But when my CEO/Founder, Theresa Randolph, announced my name SHARMEEKA MILLER, I wanted to pass out; I was in disbelief. I thought it was all a dream. I turned around because at this point my name had been called twice so far for Rising Star and People’s Choice Award. I was elated as I watched my family jump out their seats cheering me on. I kept repeating OMG to myself as I hugged my pageant sisters walking to the stage knowing this night is real. QSM: Tell me a little bit about your platform? Sharmeeka: I have always believed in “Changing Narratives in Women.” My platform is Promoting Unyielding Direction. P.U.D. LLC is a women’s organization in which we promote fellow women to become successful in their everyday careers and lives. This platform started with an internal relationship with my cousin, which now has turned into an external community where we encourage other women.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2021 ISSUE

QSM: How do you plan to carry out your platform during your reign as Queen? Sharmeeka: I have and I will continue my platform with (P.U.D.) so far since my crowning. We managed to hold a health and wellness class teaching CPR and First Aid. We hosted a Virtual Book Reading. We held several informational sessions, giveaways honoring Women’s History Month and delivered care packages for local Breast Cancer Survivors in the community. We have made partnerships with Sasha Bruce, where we hosted a Sock & Sanitizer; we were able to donate over 300 pairs of socks and sanitizers. Sasha and P.U.D. are pursuing to adopt a home where we will mentor young girls. In the future, I plan to make more partnerships, connect with organizations and continue to promote P.U.D. We continue to promote women entrepreneurs through a live segment on social media called the (P.U.D) Plug. Our goal is to stay consistent in giving back to the community. QSM: IMPRESSIVE WORK! Let’s talk Plus industry. Who are YOUR plus icons? Sharmeeka: In both modeling and pageantry, I have been watching so many plus size icons. Icons that I truly appreciate how they showcase their confidence. The one I admire the most is Liris Crosse, The 1st Project Runway winner. She is the author of “Make The World Your Runway!” Model motivational speaker. She is amazing and I love her style & class. QSM: What is the best advice you have gotten so Far? Sharmeeka: The best advice I have gotten so far was from one of my pageant Queen sisters. If You Stay Ready, You Won’t Have To Get READY!!! And KNOW YOUR WHY!!! QSM: Congratulations on everything. Where can people follow you? Sharmeeka: You can follow me on Facebook Sharmeeka Miller also on Instagram/@meekmoments4u & @p.u.d.moves

Crystal’s Awesome Haircare Tips For Travels and Vacations for Men and Women

By Crystal D. Lewis

Hi Ladies and Gentleman: Now that some of the travel restrictions are being lifted and some people are choosing to get the vaccines, I am getting excited to hear my clients, family and friends planning to finally take that trip that was postponed last year in 2020 when everything was shut down due to the pandemic. Summer is right around the corner, so whether you are going from state to state, a different country abroad or getting on your favorite cruise ship, let’s get your hair ready for anything. Here are some of my tips to enjoy your trip and not worry about your hair as you take your vacation selfies and videos. TIP #1 Coloring your hair: You may want to wait for your full color when you return from vacation because the sun can change the color of your hair. Trying highlights will be better. Treat yourself to a trim and get rid of your dead ends before your trip. Men: Some men like to try something slightly different before they go on vacation or even try a new color and haircut. TIP #2 Treat yourself to a good deep conditioner (Ask me about the Aquatic Mister Treatment) this will give your hair moisture and strengthen your hair before you leave. It will help with your styling while you are away.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2021 ISSUE

TIP #3 Check the weather, this will help you to know what the climate will be like, will it be humid, dry, or rainy and how will you wear your hair during the morning, noon or night to go along with your planned activities? This will help you in advance with what styles will be good for you. TIP #4 Protect your hair with a swim cap while swimming in a pool or going in the ocean, because chlorine and sea water can make your hair feel dry. Tip #5 Protect your hair from the sun and UV rays by wearing a nice wide-brimmed sun hat or cap during the day. Traveling can involve a lot of exposure to the sun. Men: Don’t forget to use sunscreen on my bald head gentleman. You need to protect your scalp. TIP #6 Packing your products: If your trip is longer than a week, make sure you carry trial size containers of your shampoo, conditioner, oils, and styling products. Speak to your stylist because some products can be bought as a trial size kit from your salon, barber or at your beauty supply store. Men: Check with the airlines, TSA and travel agencies have rules for carrying razor blades for barbering and shaving.

HAIRCARE TIPS FOR TRAVELS..... | CRYSTAL D. LEWIS

when you return from your trip that we take care of our natural hair and don’t keep that protective style on your hair too long because this is when I start seeing people with hair loss issues and no edges. I am all about keeping your natural hair healthy at all times. Men: Some men are now trying hair pieces or wearing male units that are now professionally made for men’s hair replacement. We love taking care of our men.

TIP #7 Don’t forget to take what I call, my hair care 911 Emergency Travel Bag with your bobby pins, satin or silk scarves or satin or silk lined caps, silk pillowcase, styling tools, comb and brushes and hair ties. Just in case you want to wear a bun or ponytail. Men: Pick up your silk Durags or wave caps for your trip.

TIP #9 You know I always remind my I Say Yes Community to Take your Vitamins and Drink your Water to help you with your healthy hair journey. Please remember to stay hydrated because we tend to drink a lot of our favorite drinks while on vacation. Most of all, be safe, have fun, and have a great 2021 summer of traveling and vacations. I can’t wait to hear about your trips and see your pictures. If you have any questions, please reach out to me. You can send an email to isayyessalonspallc@gmail.com or join our community and follow us on social media: Facebook or Instagram @ isayyessalonspa I SAY YES! Crystal D. Lewis Licensed Professional Cosmetologist 28 years in the Beauty Industry

TIP #8 Some of my clients choose protective styles to wear when planning a trip; which is your Braids, weaves, wigs or extensions. Plan to make this decision to have these styles booked with your stylist, by appointment, a week before you leave. Make sure that

SIMPLE SELFCARE TIPS YOU’LL LOVE

SIMPLE SELF-CARE TIPS YOU’LL LOVE| FAMILY FEATURES

When easing into a new year, many experts encourage more self-care. From paying more attention to your mental health to pampering yourself from head to toe, now is the perfect time to start showing yourself a little extra love. Make time to decompress. The past year shows that every rose comes with thorns, like working from home or legitimately needing to shop online. Managing a work-home balance may be harder than ever and late deliveries can make those online orders a real headache. Add the challenge of staying healthy, less social interaction and worries about the economy, and stress is probably a constant in many lives. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and unwind. Lock yourself away for 30 minutes of quiet time so you can let those stress endorphins settle down. Read a book, listen to music, meditate or simply be, without interruptions or demands. Keep up familiar routines. Even if you’re sticking closer to home, skipping your normal beauty routines can throw you off your game. Make it a point to get dressed and ready for a day as if you’re planning to be out and about. Looking your best can translate into feeling your best, and it means you’re ready for a surprise video call or a days-late delivery you weren’t expecting. Give special care to your “sole-mates.” They may not be at the top of your beauty regime, but your feet are the toughest, hardest-working part of your body. Because they take you everywhere,

when you show your feet the love they deserve, it shows, and can help you feel better literally from head to toe. Even if you’re not comfortable going back to the salon just yet, you don’t have to sacrifice self-care. For example, the Amope foot care line is easy to use at home so you can get long-lasting hydration and visible results. An option like the Pedi Perfect Electronic Foot File uses finely ground diamond crystals to smooth hard skin effortlessly, and you can wrap up your home pedicure with coconut oil-enriched PediMasks that leave your feet soft, smooth and nourished in just 20 minutes. Maintain social connections. Contact with friends and family outside your home may look different than it has in the past but nurturing those relationships can be an important aspect of self-care. Regular contact with loved ones, even if it’s just by text, phone or video, can help curb loneliness, reduce boredom and lift your spirits. Set goals and start chasing them. If you feel like time is standing still, you’re not alone. However, setting goals and working toward them can help you feel more productive and accomplished. You may be surprised what you can achieve, from starting a new fitness routine or learning a new language to finally organizing an overrun closet. Put yourself at the center of your love story and find more ideas for satisfying self-care at amope.com. (Family Features)

My name is Ashley Walker, also known as MsBeYouDoYou on all social platforms, and I am from Beaumont Texas. I am a mother to one daughter, a grandmother, a petite plus model, fashion blogger, and motivational speaker. I did not choose the industry, the industry chose me. My career began with fulfilling a favor for a friend who happened to be a designer and CEO of The Dream World in Fashion. I took some images for her boutique and caught the attention of individuals in the area. I was blessed to establish a great working relationship with a local photographer, Alfred Beverly of Charis Solutions Photography in Beaumont Texas, who became my right hand man through this entire journey. From the day we got started, I have worked daily towards the growth of my career and never looked back. Through MsBeYouDoYou I am able to promote self-love and body positivity while encouraging others to live and love life their way. I have been fortunate enough to grace the pages of Queen Size Magazine of New York, Salty of NYC, BTFL Magazine of Baltimore, Modelocity Magazine, Luxe Kurves, and Snap Model Magazine of California. I was featured in segments of LoveUMagazine, Voyage Houston, and The Curvy Fashionista Blogger Spotlight of the Week. I’ve been blessed to walk stages for Ashley Stewart and was one of the first finalists for Finding Ashley Stewart 2017. The TCFStyle Expo, National Curves Day, District of Curves, Miss Fashion Week where I was crowned Miss Fashion Week Plus Model of the Year, the Curvy Fest in Cancun and may more. I was able to shoot with Lane Bryant, volunteered, and was a brand ambassador to one of the designers during Full Figured Fashion Week 2018. I have been fortunate to work with a host of amazing

photographers from all parts of the US. I attended and was directly coached by some of the best in the business including Coco Rocha, Liris Crosse, Khrystyana Kazakova just to name a few. I have been a speaker for events for The Nakid Foundation, The Curvy Summer Scene, and a Panelist for the First Netwerq Your Curves off event in DC and Project Beautiful Me in Houston. I have recently co-produced a Walking Beyond the Standard panel, which we will roll out model workshops in the future.

I co-produced my first show with Iconic Fashion Productions, An Iconic Night in Fashion, where I was able to debut my very own apparel that is available online now. We are gearing up for our second debut in 2022 since covid delayed our 2020 event. I created Fortify Talent, a consultation agency designed to help those in need of resources to get their footing and a solid and confident industry start. I am an ambassador for Kelly’s Kloset, Adore Me, Shein Curve, Kushe Clothing, and many more. I accepted the role this past Summer, as fashion editor for Queen Size Magazine and it has been such an amazing journey thus far.

Covid definitely changed the game for all of us, so I spent the year developing my presence on all social media outlets. I accepted the opportunity to work with a medical company as one of their influencers, to undergo bariatric sleeve surgery as they followed my journey and progress for a year. In November of 2020 I flew to Turkey to have my surgery. My decision was fueled by the inability to sustain any long term results, no matter how and what I tried over the years. I had successful travels, surgery, recovery, and team with me. I want to empower others to do whatever they feel will be beneficial to them without worrying of judgement from others. I want to show that you can love yourself and still want to change some things. I want to show that it is okay to get surgery, even when you are not forced to medically, and that it is not the “easy” way out. I want to show others that you can be body positive at any size.

QSM: What are some of the things that you have learned about yourself throughout your journey in the fashion industry? Ashley: Throughout my journey in the industry, I have learned that I am way more resilient than I already believed I was. I never thought working in this industry would be easy, not even close. I knew that I was coming in this at a disadvantage. Knowing all of that ahead of time, still did not prepare me for these four years. Taking on a career in the fashion industry is not for the weak or faint at heart. If you have a thin skin, forget about it. I knew that I wanted to make a difference and inspire others, but I learned that my passion and my worth ethic to win, will put me in rooms and will take me to places beyond my imagination, if I allow it to do so. I learned to make room for my gifts, and to be open to however they will be utilized. QSM: Are there any hardships that you would say that you had to endure as a plus size model and/or fashion blogger? Ashley: As a plus size model, being under 5’5” has been my biggest hardship. On top of being a woman of color and plus size, my height has been the most consistent reason for my no’s (next opportunities) and it has been frustrating to say the least. One day I hope we will see complete inclusivity in our industry. As a fashion blogger, the hardships I can think of would be keeping up my consistency. Consistency is so important for a blogger in order to keep the audience engaged and business booming. Life and other ventures make keeping consistent hard at times. QSM: What would you say was the most challenging photoshoot that you’ve done? Why and how did you handle it? Ashley: I have been fortunate to have a personal photog, Charissolutions Photography, along with shooting with some of the other bests in the business in my four years. With that being said, I did have a time early on where

I was a little green and accommodating, when I should have been more particular like my photog/manager advised lol, but I did not want to come off as a diva! I agreed to a shoot out of town where all of the arrangements were sketchy and there were red flags with the details, but I went anyway. The vehicle intended for us to travel in broke down so we had to stuff five people, plus bags in a small vehicle to travel. Upon arrival, the coordinators did not call ahead for closing times or any accommodations, so we had a very limited time to shoot the garments, with no real place to change. It was hot and at the peak of the day and the photographer had no equipment. Talk about disaster, but I always pride myself on remaining professional in all situations, so I got dressed and got to work. We were miserable and the images were not good, even some were blurry. From this experience, I learned to be more particular and that we can’t shoot with everyone. It is imperative to do research on all involved to ensure the project aligns with you and your brand. QSM: You have been very transparent about your weight loss surgery, and we commend you for sharing your journey. Have you experienced criticism for having WSL? If so, how do you deal with that? Ashley: I am so overjoyed to say that I have received nothing but positive feedback for my decision and my journey. I have tried to remain as open as I possibly can from the very beginning, allowing my followers to see me as my authentic self. My followers have been so super supportive and I love them for it. I am so grateful for amazing support systems and people who truly want the best for me. I did not know what to expect, but I can say that I am so pleased with the entire process and journey thus far.

QSM: Regarding the plus-sized industry, what are a couple of aspects that you both love and dislike about it? Ashley: What I love about the plus-sized industry is that it was created to allow a space and opportunities for those bodies and individuals that were not recognized in the standard industry that already existed in fashion. It has birthed so much talent and has truly opened the eyes of so many to reprogram themselves on what beauty and fashion is all about. What I dislike about the plus-sized industry is that even though it was created to showcase the beauty, talent, and abilities of bigger bodies, the very reason it was created has been used to cast out some groups of people needing representation. This has been done by creating standards within the very standards this industry was created to break. If there is a quest for diversity and inclusivity in the plus-sized industry, how can we pick and choose what attributes are acceptable. There is plus size in many forms. Representation matters, but in our industry, it still has to be certain representation and that is not inclusivity in my opinion. I appreciate every door that has been opened and there are evident strides made, so I definitely don’t want to seem ungrateful for the process. I will continue to work and push for complete inclusivity in the industry as a whole. QSM: With so many people doing fashion blogs, how do you make your blog stand out? Tell us about your blog while you’re at it. lol Ashley: From the very beginning I decided that my blog was created to basically allow a space where people could follow my journey as a model while getting some great, affordable, fashion ideas. During my four years I believe I have remained consistent with that while showing my audience the good, bad, and the ugly sides of life and the industry. I have had periods of going cold and then getting back with it, but I believe my audience can appreciate my realness when it comes to life and juggling things that come our way. I probably need to write and update as we speak as I am behind, but when I post I make sure it is good.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2021 ISSUE

QSM: I am sure that people see other bloggers and automatically say “this looks simple enough” LOL! What are two tips that you would give to anyone looking to start their own blog? What should they expect going into the plussized fashion industry? Ashley: Easy? Lol, yeah right!!! My tips for those starting a blog would be number one, make sure whatever you are blogging about is something you love or love to do. Blogging gets super tedious and tiring, so if you don’t actually love what you are talking about and doing, it will become impossible to continue. Blogging is just too much work and time vested not to love it. Number two, try to align your life with a reasonable schedule for content production. Managing all the pieces of being a successful blogger can and will be overwhelming, so prepare for that going in. Going into the plus size fashion industry, you will see a ton of people doing exactly what you are doing or want to do, don’t be discouraged, everyone had a starting point and you are the only one that can be the best at being you, so Be you and do you. QSM: You and I have had this discussion many times about “all publicity is not good publicity”. What factors go into you deciding whether you will accept or decline a job? Ashley: We have to always remember that we are our brand and the decisions we make could make or break us. Keeping that in mind, I strive to be able to show versatility in my work and range, while still staying true to myself and my brand. With that being said, when I am approached with opportunities, the first thing is to research. I research the brand to find out what they are really about, what are the main players about, what is their audience. Do all of these things align with my brand and my values? I have a second set of eyes (Alfred Beverly most of the time) looking into things right along with me so I don’t miss anything. If there is not a good feeling or some flags come up, I usually decline unless the brand or company can respond and bring comfort in moving forward. The more seasoned I become this gets a little easier, but I never let my guard down when choosing work.

“We have to always remember that we are our brand and the decisions we make could make or break us.” QSM: With EVERYTHING on your plate already, how did you find room to start Fortify Talent? Tell us more about your consultation agency, where can people get more info on it? (Do you cater to all sizes? Do you work with men and women?) Ashley: I actually created Fortify Talent early on, because helping others was the initial reason I got started. I have taken these four years to build myself, be teachable, learn, build my network, and cultivate relationships that could aide me in assisting others. I don’t want to be an agent or agency, strictly consult based. I do not have a brick and mortar, so I work virtually and meet with clients for their needs. Fortify Talent is completely inclusive, as that is my foundation and what I work for daily. I am available to assist both men and woman of all sizes, shapes, race, etc. I am still working and building Fortify Talent and hope to have an actual location sometime in the future. QSM: With the way everything is geared towards social media and followers, tik tok, Instagram etc. Do you find there is still a need, requirement or purpose for people in the industry to have a website? What are some pros vs cons? Ashley: There is an absolute need, requirement, and purpose for having a website now and forever. Your website is your base and foundation. It is the place where you actually should be utilizing those other platforms to drive people to. Your website is a one stop shop for everything that you do, and should be able to service the needs of all visiting there. If any of those

social platforms disappear tomorrow, what will you do without a website? Will people know how to contact you, book you, and shop from you? These are the reasons a website is super important. Protect yourself and your brand. QSM: You are currently undergoing a rebrand. Tell us about it. Ashley: Yes, it is rebranding time! I feel like after 4 years of MsBeYouDoYou, it is time to take things to the next level. I have several projects in the pipeline and I wanted to house it all in one place. I also wanted to come up with a brand that was true to me, purposeful, and looked good on paper for transition into my LLC and future business opportunities. Some may know I recently became a grandmother, and my want for legacy was made clear. AJMichelle was birthed by taking myself, my daughter, and my granddaughter’s names into account. Our middle name is Michelle and Ashley, Aryah, and Jada brought us AJ. It looks good on paper, on a fashion label, as well as it is able to tie in all of my future projects under the same umbrella. This will allow me to leave my legacy to them to continue when I am gone. We are super excited for it all. QSM: With that being said, please do tell everyone where they can find and support you Ashley. Ashley: You can find me at www. msbeyoudoyou.com as well as @ msbeyoudoyou on all social platforms. Stay tuned for all things @ajmichelle as well as a site in the very near future.

Budge proof makeup By Lala Sanyang Hello Queens, The summer heat is around the corner and Hot Girls are always looking for ways to maintain a flawless finish in the summer heat. Here are a few tips to help preserve and give you budge proof makeup. First tip you will need a face primer, waterproof foundation, and a setting powder. First apply a face primer such as Becca ever matte poreless perfecting primer. Once you have applied the primer spray the face with a setting spray such as Crown Cosmetics Set All day. Next apply the waterproof foundation, this will help especially if you have oily skin. One notable brand is MAC Cosmetics Prolong Wear. After the foundation application spray the face again and then set the face with a setting powder such as MAC Mineralized Skin Finish and spray the final layer of setting spray. Lastly apply a budge proof liquid lipstick to the lips as Lala Faces Cosmetics and you are good to go. I hope this technique helps you beat the heat this summer. Take care Queens and stay safe. xoxo, Lala Sanyang

BEAUTY AND FASHION My name is Marie Lofton. I am a 40-yearold registered nurse, pageant queen, and entrepreneur who aspires to make a few waves in the full-figured modeling industry. I initially did some modeling as a teenager for John Casablancas but was young and did not pursue further. I began modeling again over three and a half years ago, initially wanting to try something different. I had recently ended a long-term relationship and was recovering from depressive episode. Coming from such a low point in my life, I began to learn to love myself again. It is this journey to self-love that pushed me to not only pursue modeling, but to step outside of the box. I stared a business and become a pageant queen! (I am Ms. Plus American Nation 20-21). Not knowing how or where to begin I was fortunate enough to be connected to some of the greatest creatives in this area via social media. I participated in a swimsuit power shoot that officially started me on the path to modeling, and I never looked back. I had rediscovered my love for life and wanted to show it in print. My platform and journey to self-love propelled me to start Lovely Ladees, LLC. It is my motivational speaking platform where I talk about my journey to self-love and motivate other women who may have similar stories. I had grown from hating the person in the mirror, to loving me and my perfect imperfections! As a plus-size model, I feel it is important to show inclusivity in modeling. Women come in all shapes and sizes. For many years, the models that you would normally see represented on TV and in media were slim. I did not fit this mold at all, I never have. I wanted to see more women that looked like me and were shaped like me. I have battled with my weight for many years but am now comfortable with who I am and how I look. I realized that many women suffer from low self-esteem and low self-worth and I wanted to change that. Many times, women compare themselves to the women they see on television and social media, believing that is what is acceptable. We have to change this way of thinking! All women of all sizes are beautiful, and I am glad to see that the industry is changing. I am here for it! I want to show other full-figured women to love their bodies, embrace the skin they are in and do whatever it is their heart desires to do.

“Bikini Body”, “swimsuit ready”, “Summer ready”; what do these terms mean to you. How do terms like these make you feel? News flash, a “beach” body, is the body you have right now! Why can’t a Plus Size woman in a swimsuit just be a regular everyday act? It’s almost like some people feel that bodies of size should be fully clothed by the pool. We wear a swimsuit because it’s hot outside, because we want to, and because we love ourselves as we are, and we should not let judgement stop us!! Older stereotypes attempt to make us feel like we should be afraid of wearing a swimsuit. The intent was to show that larger bodies are something to be ashamed of. Times have changed and we are more confident and more powerful than ever before, and people will see more of us in our swimsuits than ever before!!!! Our curves were meant to be seen and it’s time that everyone realized that loving ourselves at all parts of our journey is normal and here to stay!!! Let’s normalize “real bodies”! The only concern a girl or woman should have when debating if she will wear a swimsuit or not, is to decide if it will be a one piece or two, bold, solids or prints!!! Here we have shown everyday women of different shapes and sizes, confidently wearing multiple looks that can appeal to every taste for Summer. When picking out your suit, it’s only right to choose styles and colors that flatter you most. Women of all sizes can rock a high wasted two piece, a bikini, and a sexy/flirty one piece all on the same vacation and look absolutely stunning in every one of them. Body positivity and self-love is for all bodies and it is here to stay!

AND THE CATEGORY IS...

SWIMWEAR Miss America may have eliminated the swimwear competition, but there are still pageants that include swimwear as part of the process. In my opinion, swimwear shows confidence, walking the runway showing the crowd what they are working with. I love competing in swimwear! WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2021 ISSUE

by Dr. Janelle “The Curvy Doc” Simmons

Pageants such as Ms. USA and Ms. Universe have required contestants to wear the same style of swimwear: a solid-colored bikini, or onepiece. During the swimwear competition, contestants can do almost any and everything. It can really show a woman’s personality. Competing in swimwear is one of my favorite areas of competition.

AND THE CATEGORY IS.... | JANELLE “THE CURVY DOC” SIMMONS

Here are some tips and ideas to slay the swimwear competition:

keep the swimsuit in place, especially in the derriere area.

ONE Accessories: Don’t be afraid to

EIGHT Tanning: For those who decide

accessorize! Jewelry, hats, sunglasses, can be the icing on the cake.

TWO Prints: Wearing prints can be your friend. Unless the pageant system does not allow prints, wear them!

THREE Color Block: If you don’t feel comfortable wearing prints, try color block. Be daring with the colors.

FOUR Additional Clothing: Swimwear

doesn’t always mean just the swimsuit. It can include capes, cover ups, pants, trains…you name it! Keep in mind those additional items should enhance, and not overpower the swimsuit.

FIVE Shoes: Unless required to wear

solid or nude color shoes, be daring with the shoes. Reminder-a pageant is not the time to break in new shoes. Reminder #2: You don’t need to wear stilettos either. A 3-inch heel will do.

SIX Color Matching: If you must

wear shapewear, be sure the tights or pantyhose you wear are the same color as your skin.

to get a tan (whether a spray tan or tanning bed), use caution. You may want to do a test tan months before. Shading matters, as it can impact the total package.

NINE Lotion/Body Oil: Wearing lotion or body oil will make the body shine. However, do not wear too much.

TEN Walk: Since a swimsuit shoes

confidence, your walk must reflect that. Your walk must be faster and more upbeat than evening gown. Stand straight and keep your shoulders back.

ELEVEN SMILE!: If you don’t smile, you’ve already lost.

TWELVE HAVE FUN!: Competing in pageantry is all about personal exploration, so enjoy the journey!

If I can be of additional assistance, feel free to send an email to info@ janellesimmons.com. Now go out there and wear that swimsuit; I’ll be cheering you on!

SEVEN Tape: Tape may be needed to

MIND YOUR BODY AND YOUR BUSINESS Written by Nyemade Boiwu (African Butterfly)

With swimsuit season creeping upon us so does all that talk about getting a “beach body”. The body positive movement tells us everybody is a beach body and should be accepted as is. Great, wonderful message! However, what happens when someone decides they want to lose a little weight for their own personal reasons? Well, that’s when the ugly size of the movement quickly rears its head. Isn’t it interesting how frequently even movements that are started with the best intent can easily and quickly turn as toxic as the very thing they were trying to prevent? Body positivity is a word that gets floated around frequently these days. It started as an effort to combat the negativity of fatphobia but has now turned into its own weird branch of shaming. At its core body positivity is supposed promote self-acceptance. It goes off of the principle that all bodies are good bodies. Everyone deserves respect regardless of the size of their jeans. We know there’s a wide range of body shapes and sizes out there that should be acknowledged without being shamed. One of the most prevalent displays of fatphobia is the policing of larger bodies by those in slimmer bodies. Whether it be for appearances or “health”, there are always those that display their fatphobia by their inability to not comment negatively on the body of someone else. Those instances of fatphobia, while frustrating, make sense. What doesn’t make sense is when the very people who have experienced that behavior from those in slimmer body then turn around and try to police the bodies of individuals trying to lose weight. At the end of last year Lizzo did a juice cleanse which resulted in her losing some weight. Well, when people found out some of them lost their minds. How could Lizzo claim to have self-love and body acceptance while also trying to lose weight. There were think pieces and podcast episodes about if she could still be considered a real supporter of body positivity if she was actively trying to change her body. To all of that I say – y’all are doing too much. Photo by Jennifer Enujiugha from Pexels

First of all, Lizzo never came on the scene declaring that she wanted to be the face and voice piece of larger women everywhere. She arrived as someone who unapologetically loves herself and it was that confidence that drew many of us to her. It’s so rare that we see that level of self-love from someone in a larger body in such a public space. I frequently speak out about how much representation matters so I can understand why many people felt so connected to her. She made a lot of people who felt invisible finally feel seen for the first time. So of course, when the person who made you feel like it was okay to love yourself as is turns around and changes something about themselves it can be jarring. However, people lose weight for all different reasons and no one can tell someone else that they shouldn’t lose weight because that’s not body positive. I see it frequently across various social media platforms. When a plus size influencer loses weight people often have something negative to say or pull their support from them. Why? Unless that individual has been negatively talking down weight loss only to do it themselves, there’s no reason their body choices should make anyone else upset. With Lizzo’s situation she wasn’t even trying to specifically lose weight. She was trying to improve the way she was feeling so she did a cleanse that obviously led to weight loss as well. Now, I’m not sure who needs to hear this but – Lizzo is still fat. So are most of your favorite bloggers and influencers who have recently lost weight. While people are busy saying negative things about them losing weight in their comments section, they’re at home still fat wondering what the fuss is all about. I’ve never understood how someone is okay with cheering on and loving a size 18 person who’s all about body positivity. However, if a size 24 person becomes a size 18 then suddenly, she no longer deserves the support of the plus size community. Um, what? She’s STILL plus size.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but no one told that to our joints and organs so being overweight has an impact on them. Everybody’s body is different so when and how much they’re impacted varies. Some people start to feel the physical impact 50lbs overweight and some people don’t feel a real negative impact until they’re 200lbs overweight. Why can some bodies seem to still be able to function well significantly overweight while others can’t? Who knows? More importantly, if it’s not your body, why do you care? What matters is really supporting people when we say that we do. As much as we want influencers to be transparent, we should be honest with ourselves about why we really follow them. Is a person your favorite blogger because you truly enjoy them, their content and you care about the individual? Or, are they your favorite because you like the way they make you feel about yourself? If your answer is the later of the two choices that explains the anger when that person decides to make a physical change. However, if your answer was the first choice then wouldn’t you want someone you care about to feel a great as possible? Don’t you want them rocking their swimsuit this season in a body that makes them happiest? Whether it be for physical or mental reasons people’s weight loss reasons are personal to them. Someone deciding to lose weight doesn’t mean they’re no longer body positive. Just as we don’t want smaller bodies telling us we need to lose weight no one larger wants to hear anyone tell them why they are wrong for wanting to lose weight. Rather than projecting our own body insecurities to others we need to be more in touch with how we are feeling and work to unpack those feelings. If we stay busy minding our own bodies and our own business then we don’t have to get in our feelings about what other people do with theirs.

LOVE AND LIFE INSPIRE SUCCESS FOR TWO BLACK WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

Two rising, women entrepreneurs - Jena Holliday and Kalilah Wright - have found their voice and are using it to spread Black joy, solidify Black representation in retail and shine a spotlight on what success looks like. With the help of Target, Holliday and Wright’s stories are being told via the retailer’s Black History Month campaign, celebrating the creators building Black economic vitality and leaving a strong legacy for future generations. With just a bit of faith, illustrator and author Jena Holliday walked away from her mainstream marketing job to embrace her passion for art. What started as a hobby eventually evolved into a full-time commitment of spreading kindness and hope through her drawings depicting Black women. That commitment blossomed into a blog, aptly named Spoonful of Faith, and has thus become not only a successful business but a cultural beacon. “Authenticity is the most valuable quality to WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|JUNE 2021 ISSUE

me,” said Holliday. “Portraying Black women as raw and honest is what I know how to do, and I feel it shows other aspiring creators to lean into who they uniquely are. We are all unique and not meant to be like everyone else.” Holliday’s parents taught her that from a young age, which she feels freed her creative spirit and drives her to positively impact the Black community. Holliday wants her journey and her illustrations to motivate others, especially young Black women, to face fear and find their voice. “Your voice matters, your culture matters, your background and experience matter,” she said. “You matter because you are here.” Her business, started in 2014, took time to emerge into what it is today. For those looking to emulate Holliday’s journey, her sage advice satisfies both the emotional and professional ambition it requires to take that leap of faith and start paving a new path.

LOVE AND LIFE INSPIRE SUCCESS ........... ENTREPRENEURS | BRANDPOINT

* Start small: “A start is a start. Remember to accept and work with what you have and create the best version of you and your talent that you can right now. A spoonful is all you need to start.” * Be honest: “If you understand yourself 100%, including what you can and cannot carry, you’ll produce great work. And, be honest with your support team and let them know where you need help.” * Trust your uniqueness: “Believe you are creative and listen to your heart. Creativity shows up in so many ways, so don’t be afraid to try things that fall out of your wheelhouse.” * Live life: “Try new creative outlets to help nurture your personal spirit. Read books, watch movies, draw, write poetry, dance, sing, laugh or listen. Find the joy in living by nourishing your soul.” Unafraid to use her words to send a message, activist and apparel designer Kalilah Wright bottles authentic and unapologetic phrases about being Black in every clear canister from her company Mess in a Bottle. Printed proudly across the front of her tops, declarations like, “A Black Woman Created This” and “There Are Those Who Will Change History, And Those Who Will Be Sad They Didn’t Try” give a voice to the voiceless and allow people to express themselves without having to say anything at all. “My messages are about love, life, career and current events - they are depictions of my life and things going on around me as a Black woman in the Black community,” said Wright. “I want people to be able to walk past each other and stand in solidarity with each other, that’s why I chose apparel.”

Like her clothing, Wright offers nononsense insight for others striving for Black success. * Find your authenticity: “Success looks different for everyone, so march to the beat of your own drum - people will listen.” * Embrace the courage to keep going: “Fear can handicap you but only if you let it; always be moving forward.” * Utilize the tools you have: “Resources and money don’t have to be abundant but be resourceful and budget concise every step of the way.” * Stay business minded: “Keep focused on business first and know that if the business succeeds, then you will have another platform from which you can speak your truth.” Holliday and Wright credit much of their success to strong Black female mentorship. With guidance and support, Black voices can rise up. Both Holliday, a middle child of seven with four sisters plus a mom always telling her to “go for it” and Wright, mentored by savvy businesswoman Cici Gunn, understand that being part of Target’s Black History Month gives them the opportunity to uplift other Black women. Holliday and Wright are two examples of the many success stories of Black entrepreneurs and products Target is highlighting during Black History Month and all year round.
