FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the March 2019 issue of Queen Size Magazine. I wanted to share something with all of our readers; something that has been weighing heavily on me. I strongly dislike when people are unnecessarily judgmental. We should not be judging period, but there are those that go out of their way to shame other folks for who and or what they are; or what they look like etc.... Specifically body shamers. To shame another individual just because they do not look like you is just sad. Now here is the kicker; this goes for everyone, not just straight size. As plus size men and women, I know we get tired of the fat shaming. But how much better does that make you if you are also body shaming straight size individuals? I have seen this more and more on social media. Can we chill with it; we are out here looking like big hypocrites. Something to think about...... I want to thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

“I know what it’s like as a plus size woman to walk into a gym and feel intimidated, not know what to do and not return. I am passionate about helping women see their value, worth, and living their best lives – body, mind and soul and part of that includes taking up space in the gym and enjoying it. But there is so much more to a happy life than just hitting the gym or losing weight, one must truly love the woman they are. Having survived an abusive marriage, I know what it is like to walk through the journey to self-love and out of my deepest pain, my destiny was birthed to help other women walk the same journey.” Sarah Taylor is the president of Fitness By Sarah Taylor, Personal Trainer, Former Miss Plus Canada, Plus Size Model, Blogger, Motivational Speaker and Special Projects Editor at FabUplus Magazine. Sarah openly shares her journey of surviving abuse, self-hatred and sadness to thriving in a place of joy and self-love to give other women hope that they too can overcome anything and see beauty in themselves. She has learned that being an athlete and a model has no size and her mission is to help women on their self-love journeys. Her approach to fitness is unique as she focuses on body, mind and soul.

FITNESS BY SARAH TAYLOR | QSM

QSM: Tell me about the 12 pillars of self love and confidence. Sarah: The 12 pillars of self-love and confidence are 12 things I personally walked through in my Journey to Self-Love and I’ve built my programs by incorporating them when I work with my clients. A couple examples are Journaling, Affirmations, boundaries, etc. It is a wholistic approach to living life – body, mind and soul which I really believe is important when it comes to love yourself. Also, when rooted in self-love, your whole life can change in its entirety – my life is proof of that. QSM: You have been pretty open with your story of coming from an abusive relationship; a story that myself and too many other women can relate to. I know how it breaks you down mentally. Tell us about Sarah before the abusive relationship; who was she? Sarah: The Sarah before the abusive relationship was super outgoing – the social planner of my group. However, I was not confident back then – I hated who I was and what I looked like and I wore a proverbial mask most of my life trying to please everyone around me and I most certainly did not see my value and worth as a woman. I was very insecure and I believe that all these played a part in me accepting how I was treated by my ex-husband. He was the first man to tell me I was beautiful and I craved that so much that it was as if after he told me that – it didn’t matter how he treated me. Now I know that’s a lie. QSM: Not to get too personal, but was your breaking point in your relationship? The moment when you said enough was enough. Sarah: To be truthful, there isn’t much about my story that I haven’t shared – I share because I want to help be a voice for other women – so it’s not too personal  My breaking point came 1 week before our 2 year wedding anniversary. I had found he was talking to numerous women online, he was treating me even worse, even coming down on me for spending time with my family (who we lived with). The controlling behavior was getting way out of hand, the week prior he was aggressive sexually which caused severe pain, he stopped showering and kind of lost any regard of decency for himself and me and while he was at work I realized that I couldn’t’ live another day in this pain. So that is the day that I wrote out everything I felt and when he got home from work I made him his last supper and then read it all to him while I shook like a leaf. I listed out everything that bothered me and told him he could make changes, or he could leave and so he left. QSM: How long were you guys together? Sarah: In total, we were together 3 ½ years – married almost 2. The night I met him he told me he thought I was the one and that he was going to marry me -and why I didn’t go running for the hills is beyond me. He proposed the first time after being together about 6 weeks and were engaged 3 times before we got married – so many red flags.

11

QSM: Were you always team plus? (Please elaborate, adding what your lowest and highest weight was) Sarah: I was born on the plus team I’d say…I was almost 10 lbs and almost 2 feet tall – my poor mother. I was a size 12 at the age of 12, bullied heavily in school. My highest weight I believe was 317 (post divorce) and the lowest I’ve been was 199. However that was when I was 21 and I had lost 80 lbs in 6 months by doing 3 hours of cardio 6 days a week, and throwing up after every work out and you know what…when I got there, I still hated myself. This and so many other reasons is why I work with women on not focusing on the weight but focusing on how they feel and truly living their best lives – body, mind and soul. QSM: Where you always in some way into fitness and/or sports growing up? Sarah: I was always active. I played sports growing up – Basketball, Rugby, Football, Softball, etc. My coaches all said the same thing…you’d be so amazing if you were as confident on the field/court as you were with your mouth. Because of my lack of confidence, I usually sat on the bench but I always loved being active. For years prior to certifying as a trainer, I helped friends with fitness plans and how to exercise. QSM: When did you begin your fitness journey and why? Sarah: I started and stopped so many times. I did it the wrong way when I was 21 like I mentioned earlier so I’d say my true journey started just before my ex-husband and I split. I started jogging – I did couch to 5k to work up to my distance and got up to 10k. However due to an injury from a car accident had to switch what I did for my workouts. If I didn’t start working out (jogging) I probably would have had a mental breakdown – it was the only time I could clear my head to be honest and it really became like my medicine. I then started to focus on strength training and weight lifting which I fell in love with and is a very big part of how I train my clients. To get to where I am in my strength now took a lot – because of my accident I had to rehab my body for quite some time. When I started, I hired a trainer to rehab my muscles and we started by using a PVC pipe in training – so legit no weight and now in my peak of training I’ve been able to deadlift 250 lbs. My goal is to continue to get stronger and help other women do the same. QSM: Now you are also a model; what came first, the fitness or the modeling? Sarah: Well here’s the flow – fitness has always been a part of my life in some capacity but becoming a certified trainer is more recent. I started modelling in 2014 and certified as a trainer in 2017 and opened my first fitness studio in 2018 and my second in January of 2019.

QSM: Tell us how you got into modeling and why? Sarah: Well it was 2 years after my divorce and I was talking to my mom and she told me – “Sarah, it’s time to stop surviving and it’s time to start dreaming”…so, I went out and bought a white board and started writing out all my dreams – where I wanted to live and travel, the family I wanted and I put plus size modelling on it, and I erased it 3 times before it stuck. Well, 6 months later I had my first opportunity to model for a local plus size clothing store in Toronto, and then another gig with them and then I got an email asking if I was the next Miss Plus Canada – so I entered and I ended up winner People’s Choice, Talent and Queen. The next day I decided I was going to go for it with all I had and “Sarah Taylor’s Journey” online was born. I quickly realized I had a voice and could inspire other women in my journey and it became my passion to help women see their value, worth and beauty – so that is the why. QSM: What kind of modeling have you done? Runway, print, fit? (share a few of the things you have done) Sarah: I’ve had the privilege of doing quite a few things – Runway (Full Figured Fashion Week in NYC in 2015 and 2017), Caribbean Plus Size Fashion Week in Trinidad, Several shows in Toronto such as Curve Expo, shows for local boutiques such as SexyPlus Clothing and a few more. I’ve also done print for quite a few brands in Canada and the US including a recent campaign for Joe Fresh with Dare Magazine. I also am a regular model and fitness model and expert for FabUplus magazine. I was also on the Dr. Oz show where they surprised me and I ended up doing a segment with Ashley Graham. I’ve had quite a few magazine features. I’ve also done a bit of fit work with an intimates company who was expanding to plus size and it also included some packaging and campaign work as well. I’ve been so blessed with so many amazing opportunities! QSM: Are you married? Do you have kids? Sarah: I am not married, and I do not have kids. I have found love again though-we’ve been together a couple years and he gets me. He is also super supportive of my career and all that I do. He is also an entrepreneur, so it’s really cool to be with someone who understands long hours and has big goals and aspirations like I do. We are both super driven and not only support each other but push each other. QSM: Let’s go back a bit to your fitness. What inspired you to open a gym? Give us the story behind that. Sarah: In all honesty, I didn’t plan for it lol. I knew that for me modelling was a platform for something greater and I knew that my purpose had to do with helping women live their best lives. I knew that my current career wasn’t as fulfilling as making a difference in the lives of women (I previously worked in the nonprofit sector for a software company – as a Sr. Account manager and Product expert – I was quite successful at it, but it wasn’t enough). A mentor of mine encouraged me to explore certifying as a personal trainer as I was passionate about fitness and helping women. So I looked into it and certified – I just thought I’d do it on the side for now but then got an opportunity with my amazing friend and chiropractor (Shout out to Dr. Karen Chrobak – the ultimate #BossBabe). She offered to let me use her space as a profit split to run group classes. So I did that, then started doing 1 x 1 training.

14 QSM: And congratulations on opening your second gym. How far do you plan to expand? The US maybe? lol Sarah: Thanks so much – it’s certainly exciting! I knew I needed a second location that was located closer to the downtown core in Toronto and found an amazing space – again this happened quick and unexpectedly. My big vision is to have gyms like mine all over the world. I have massive dreams of what I want and the impact I want to make in the lives of women all around the world. I will be working this year on a few exciting projects that are video based as well so that regardless of where you are, you will have access. I can’t share all the details but stay tuned for sure.

QSM: What is next for you? Where can people follow your journey? Sarah: I have big goals and dreams – I want to have multiple fitness centers all over the world where the focus is on the Journey to Self Love and I really want to launch an online program so that things are accessible all around the world. It is really important for me to have representation of plus bodies in fitness. I want to break stereo types of epic proportions! You can follow me at www.FitnessBySarahTaylor. com and www.SarahTaylorsJourney.com. Also on Social – both Instagram and Facebook - @FitnessBySarahTaylor and @SarahTaylorsJourney.

QSM: When someone comes into your gym, what experience can they expect? Sarah: When you walk into Fitness By Sarah Taylor – you feel welcomed, you feel like you belong. You are given the tools you need to walk this Journey to Self-Love in an inclusive, safe environment for growth. From group fitness classes that incorporate self reflection, to one on one training (that also includes activities to build your confidence), to workshops and probably one of the most important things – community. We have built a beautiful community of women that will just keep growing. You are supported, you are loved, you are accepted as you are – regardless of where you are at in your fitness and self love journey.

QSM: We are super proud of you and look forward to following your journey some more. Congrats on everything. Sarah: Thank you so much for highlighting my story. I’ll leave you with this final thought… Out of my deepst pain, my destiny was birthed. I am proof that beauty can be made from the ashes and if I can overcome all I have overcome to make it where I am today, so can you. Stand tall beautiful, carry yourself with confidence and go forth into this world and leave nothing on the table. You are a Queen!

QSM: Is your gym also open to men, or is just for women? Sarah: My gym is exclusively for women. I will train men one on one, however I’ve never been asked to as of yet. But the purpose in this is there are so many women intimidated by a co-ed gym, so I have worked to take intimidation out of my space in as many areas as I can. QSM: Do you do online fitness classes for people who are not in Canada? (hint hint lol) Sarah: Right now I offer 2 options for online training – an 8 week customized plan where I will build clients a personalized plan based on their goals, current fitness level and the equipment they have access to. I also do virtual personal training where we train over skype. But, what is exciting is that I will be launching a video based program in the next couple of months which I am very excited about. QSM: You use the hashtag #JourneyToSelfLove often. In fact your whole platform is built on Self Love. Why is it this so important to you? Sarah: For me it is the core of all I do because truly when I learned to love myself, my whole world changed. I’ve done the whole – ‘I need to get skinny’ thing and when I got to this weight I had in my head, I still hated myself and my body. But, when I was rooted in self-love, opportunities came, I was happy and my life became full. We are a package which means we are body, mind and soul and in order to live in harmony, all 3 pieces need to be whole and healthy. When you join the Journey to Self Love with Fitness By Sarah Taylor we approach all 3 components because all 3 are equally important! 5 DERMATOLOGIST TIPS FOR WINTER SKINCARE Conquer winter itch with dermatologist tips The chill, the dryness, the itch: As temperatures drop, winter can wreak havoc on your skin. Fortunately, you can fight winter’s wrath by taking a few smart, proactive steps. Winter skin woes are common, with 83 percent of Americans saying their skin feels differently during the winter than it does the rest of the year, according to a recent survey conducted online among 2,000 U.S. adults by Harris Poll on behalf of CeraVe. More specifically, 77 percent say their skin feels dry in winter and 41 percent even describe it as itchy. “Winter weather can affect all skin types,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shari Marchbein. “Even though people are aware that their skin is dry, they often unknowingly make mistakes that can cause their skin to feel worse. Being mindful of how you’re treating your skin and adapting your skincare routine are two essential ways to help ease the skin discomforts that often come with the season.” To help fight dry and itchy skin brought on by winter, Dr. Marchbein suggests five simple skincare tips:

TIPS FOR WINTER SKINCARE| BRANDPOINT

17

STAY WARM, NOT HOT Everyone loves a long, hot shower in the winter. In fact, the survey found 50 percent of people take more hot showers during the winter. Unfortunately, hot water strips the skin of natural moisture that keeps it healthy, hydrated and protected. Take a short, lukewarm shower instead to avoid irritating the skin. Find that warm comfort by cozying up in a blanket afterward instead.

FIX THE WINTER ITCH That winter itch is most commonly caused by severely dry skin, so be sure to moisturize daily with products that contain ceramides to maintain hydration and fight dryness. Ceramides are naturally found in skin but can be regularly disrupted by factors like the environment and daily activities, leading to dry skin. Keep a tub of a ceramide-rich cream in your bathroom to slather on while your skin is still wet after showering to really seal in moisture and help restore the skin’s protective barrier. For added moisture and protection, use an ointment like CeraVe Healing Ointment, which contains ceramides and helps to heal dry, chapped skin, and immediately slip on socks, gloves and comfortable clothes to help it soak in.

DRESS SMART When you’re heading outside, be sure to bundle up! Always wear gear that protects your skin from the elements, like hats, scarves and gloves. Additionally, while winter makes us more inclined to bundle up in cozy sweaters, avoid any materials that may irritate your skin. If you feel itchy under your favorite wool sweater, wear a breathable shirt underneath or consider swapping it for a different material, like fleece or cashmere.

MAXIMIZE MOISTURE The colder winter air pulls moisture from the skin leaving it dry, itchy and lackluster, and heading indoors isn’t helping. The rising thermostat in your house causes dry air that sucks hydration from your skin. Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air in main spaces, like your bedroom. You should also be sure to adapt your skincare routine for the winter just like you would your wardrobe. Swap your light creams out for richer products that will add the extra moisturization needed during the winter and be sure to use them twice daily.

DRINK UP However, adding moisture back into the air isn’t the only way to hydrate yourself. You should also be moisturizing yourself from the inside out by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Water has a wide array of health benefits and the quality of your skin is one of them - especially during the winter months when we tend to lose moisture more often. Warm tea is another great way to get hydrated while comforting yourself during the colder months. “Winter doesn’t have to mean dry, itchy and uncomfortable skin,” says Marchbein. “A few proactive steps and adjustments to your daily routine can help ease some of those winter worries so you can enjoy all the fun the season has to offer.” article provided by BrandPoint WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| MARCH 2019 ISSUE

BeYouDoYou another Ashley Walker Brand QSM: Model, fashion blogger, teacher, financial advisor and motivational speaker. What else are you adding to this resume of yours young lady? Ashley: Funny you should ask, because I always had my MsBeYouDoYou products from Day 1. I recently expanded my original MsBeYouDoYou merchandise released two years ago, to include my latest comfy-cozy-chic fashions that now make up Apparel by MsBeYouDoYou! QSM: Which is what brings us here to this feature. Let’s start with your brand name Msbeyoudoyou. What is the story behind the name? Ashley: MsBeYouDoYou was born after I made the decision to step into the modeling world. The times we live in now are filled with such judgment and hate that I can hardly stand it, and people are genuinely walking around miserable trying to fit into the little boxes society forces us to conform to. As I searched for my lane in this industry and what message I wanted my brand to deliver, I knew that because I didn’t fit the mold of your stereotypical model I would have to just be me in all that I decided to do and pray that it was enough. With the help of Alfred Beverly of Charissolutionsphotography, we often found ourselves saying “Oh well, Be you do you, boo” and I of course tagged Ms on to it for a little ownership, and the rest was history!!! QSM: What made you decide to start an apparel line? Ashley: I decided to start an apparel line because I always wanted the MsBeYouDoYou line of products to be more than a glorified “t-shirt line”! I’m not a seamstress or a designer from start to finish, but I see my ideas holding so much more value than pieces to be stuffed into someone’s t-shirt drawer. I’m also a person who loves the authenticity and realness that comes with the messages and brands people choose to place on their bodies, and quite frankly I want my message to extend with the greatest reach and impact. What better way to empower and inspire the masses than to have your message on people’s bodies as they walk around? So I chose something as universal as fashion paired with my message in order to reach the people. QSM: What does your apparel line consist of? Ashley: My apparel line consists of those everyday pieces people love to pair with other fashion in their wardrobe. I’m offering everything from a crop top all the way to a full on jumpsuit, delivering comfy-cozy vibes with a touch of chic through the ability to dress each piece up or down as desired. Paired with the right pieces and accessories, Apparel by MsBeYouDoYou can take you from work at the office in a blazer all the way to a hot T-shirt dress with heels to have an after 5 cocktail with your girlfriends. I am still creating and I intend to have something for everyone, but for now my guys, babies and kids can enjoy T-shirts, sweatshirts and onesies as I cover all of my bases in your typical fashion forward household.

QSM: Do you see yourself showcasing your apparel on runways? Ashley: As a matter of fact I do see myself showcasing my fashion on runways, as I decided to leap and did just that when I put 10 of my looks on the runway of my very first show on January 26th in my hometown of Beaumont Texas. QSM: What is the average cost of your items? Ashley: Currently with Apparel by MsBeYouDoYou, you will not spend over 40 bucks for any item I sell. On average a consumer will spend about 25 bucks on an item with me, give or take. I want to keep fashion meaningful, versatile and affordable for everyone. QSM: You were recently featured in our publication and we talked about your life as a blogger and a model. Give us some updates on what else has been going on with you. Spill the beans Ashley: I decided well before 2018 came to a close, that 2019 would have to be a year of stretching my vision and walking beyond the standard for my goals and dreams. With me realizing how far my brand can really go, so I’m shooting my shot all of 2019!!! Right out the gate I decided to step to the other side of the runway and try my hand at producing a show and it was amazing!!! QSM: Show producer!!! Wow…. What don’t you do? Tell us more about this show and why you felt there was a need for it. Ashley: The ability for small town individuals with gifts and raw talent like myself to be able to walk beyond the standard and dream big and then have the opportunity to execute, is something very near and dear to my heart. I want to be that vehicle that helps them soar. Over my 2 years in the industry, I have done a lot and in turn, I have learned a lot from some pretty amazing people that gave me the courage to take on a production for the first time. That production allowed me to open my hometown up to experience a taste of what I have been so very fortunate to be a part of in this industry and to allow those right at home the opportunity to showcase their own gifts and talents, and for that I am very grateful and deeply moved.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2019 ISSUE

QSM: I know you had other partners on this production journey with you. What was that like working with other people on producing a show? Ashley: Wow, where do I begin lol!! Well, first let me say that what we accomplished in a little over 2 months together is very rare and should be praised, so if you don’t mind me taking a second to toot our horn a bit, “toot, toot”! At the very same time, I will be extremely transparent and say that it wasn’t always easy and that there were ups and downs as we are 4 very strong business savvy individuals with pretty different lanes and strengths in what we bring to the table. Those different lanes allowed for roles to be identified, which was actually a good thing. Not that I am the only one in fashion in the group, but I am the only one that has experienced fashion productions of this magnitude all over the country and abroad within the industry. Times where I thought I knew best didn’t always end in my favor, but for the most part they did and our common ground reached allowed for a successful event! We were tested, but I have to say that those down times only lasted for a moment and we were able to get back to the overall goal which was a successful show for each of our individual brands, the IFP brand, our reputations, and for the people of Southeast Texas because they deserve it!! QSM: Who had the original vision? Ashley: In our own way, we all had the original vision and then four of us discussed hosting an event as separate pairs initially before merging forces. I don’t think either of us initially had the vision to do things on this scale until we all four sat down and realized the potential before us. QSM: Will this be an ongoing production? Ashley: This Event was originally decided to be sort of a precursor to reoccurring events we all feel our area lacks at this time. There is so much talent and potential in Southeast Texas and fashion has a funny way of bringing all walks of life together under one roof, and that is so needed in our parts. So the answer is yes, this on some level will be an annual event with the intentions of growing it into our very own Southeast Texas Fashion Week, so leave a spot open for me on your calendars!!!

QSM: A little birdie told me that you were also a ballet dancer. Is that true? Ashley: Ha Ha, how sneaky that little birdie is lol!!! Yes, that is in fact true as I began dancing at the age of two and a half all the way to the ripe, bold age of twenty-four. I began teaching dance while in college and continued until my thirtieth birthday. So dance was my real first true passion and still is!! QSM: Why did you stop? Ashley: I have never really stopped dancing to be honest, performing yes, but a true dancer never stops. I always find my ways to get in a little here or there in the oddest most unplanned occasion, I. E. My high school’s recent mass reunion lol!!! My 16 year old daughter is absolutely amazing and I believe was created to dance, so I am able to pour into her as she allows. Life and adulting are really what caused me to stop actively dancing and teaching at the time as my profession and my roles as mom, wife, Professional etc quickly absorbed all of my free space, leaving absolutely no room for my passion. The real truth is that I am the reason I stopped. This occurrence is something that happens way too often with women year after year and I have worked two years trying to show myself and others that it doesn’t have to be that way. We can still be amazing in all of our roles, while fearlessly living out our passions. So who knows, you might just catch me on your screen one day in action lol! QSM: Do you also secretly work for the airlines because you travel more than most people I know. What’s up with that? Ashley: That is funny lol!!!! I actually put that down on my list of one of the things I would try later in order to start flying for free once my daughter graduates high school lol!!! To answer your question, no I do not work for an airline and I have enough flyer miles racked up I could teach a class on investing in yourself 101, because I may have enough experience to earn a doctorate in that area!!!! What I will say is that it has taken great sacrifice to endure what I have thus far, but I will continue working and doing all that I can to turn my passion into my entire paycheck!! QSM: What do you tell models who want to branch off into other things within the fashion industry in addition to modeling?

23

Ashley: I tell other models wanting to branch off to start yesterday, but branch off with purpose and remain strategic in your moves. Write down your goals and where you’d like to see yourself go and to do a little something each and every day to contribute to you getting to that point. Try to cut out all things that don’t contribute to a forward progression in your lane and only pour into those that do. Most of all, to do everything on purpose even when you mess up. Messing up and course correcting with purpose will lead to your destined path and ultimate the form of happiness and success!! QSM: Is there any room on your plate to take on any more endeavors? What’s next; because there is always something next with you? Ashley: Believe it or not I am actually full right now, but always open to a pitch or proposal. Even though I believe in branching out, I also believe in order to be amazing at something you can’t be all over the place. Being featured as a motivational speaker and panelist is something you will see me being more active in this year, so keep your eyes peeled for that. The things I have on my plate already are what I choose to perfect in 2019 and are all tied into the fashion industry. I just intend to work to extend my reach and my resume within each of them. QSM: You already know that we are fans of Ashley Walker and the Msbeyoudoyou brand. Please keep up the great work. Ashley: From the bottom of my heart I thank Team QSM and I am forever grateful and humbled to know you. I want to say to all the individuals that are currently being told they can’t do something, that they aren’t the right fit, that what they want to do is not common for them or most people are usually unsuccessful at it, I tell them to block it all out and to remember that every single extraordinary happening most likely started outside of a box, and to continue walking beyond the standard by never hesitating to shoot their shot for all of their goals and dreams. You can find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @ Msbeyoudoyou and of course my blog and my online store at www.msbeyoudoyou.com smooches!!

QSM: Congratulations on becoming the 2019 Face of QSM. I am so happy for you. Are you still crying or has the shock worn off already? Lol Sharonda: Lol, the shock hasn’t worn off. I am not crying anymore, but I am super excited about representing an awesome magazine. It is a real honor. QSM: Let’s start with your life as an Army Vet. As cliché as this question is going to sound, I am going to ask it anyway; what made you join the Army? Do you love your country that much? Lol Sharonda: Lol, I can’t say that I had all the deep commendable reasonings as others did, but I can say it was the wisest decision that was ever made on my behalf. My mother signed my entrance into the Army at the age of 16, prior to me being on my own. As it turned out, I needed the Army to escape a negative environment. I joined the Army to flee from a life of homelessness and ensure my future. QSM: Amen to that… A Government Contract Specialist sounds like a pretty damn important job. What exactly do you do? Sharonda: I work for the Army Corps of Engineers. I create, examine, and monitor contractual agreements between the Corps and material and labor suppliers. The largest contract I’ve written was worth 25 million dollars for services provided to the Navy. You can say my job is an intricate piece to the puzzle. QSM: Is this something that you did while in the Army or did this come after you left? Sharonda: lol, I laugh because believe it or not I was a 63B (Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic) when I first entered into the military. Yes me, a mechanic, who could really hold her own. I attained awards and was well known

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2019 ISSUE

within my organization. I remember one-time changing engine oil on a HMMWV (The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) and about 5 gallons of oil had been drained into a bucket from previous oil changes when my wrench fell into the bucket. Everyone in the motor pool thought I would never reach into the bucket. “Wrong”, I simply rolled my sleeve up got the wrench out cleaned it of and proceeded to finish the job. I really am “Army strong”. My current occupation came after I left the military. I worked for several contract companies, finished my dual degree, attained my certificates and here I am. QSM: Perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. Lol. At what point did you decide that modeling was something that you wanted to tackle? Sharonda: After my first runway show hosted by Full Figured Fierce. I figured I could make modeling a career or at least try. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE all things fashion, modeling, and art. The show gave me the courage and confidence I needed to proceed. QSM: You have accomplished so much in your modeling career thus far. Good for you. What is your driving force? Sharonda: My driving force has always been to inspire others. I want them to understand that no matter how large their obstacles and challenges may seem they can overcome them and achieve the unthinkable. QSM: What does your closet look like? Do you keep or sell your clothing? Sharonda: I am ashamed to say I have taken over the closet in my room and a closet/room upstairs. I have sold clothes. I have given clothes away to others and charity. I do keep some clothes. I am currently working to get rid of a lot of clothes via selling and giving away.

Sharonda QSM: Well let me go on and send you my address. Lol. You have a son and you also have two daughters; a set of beautiful twins. Are they as much into fashion as you are? Sharonda: Yes, they all are. The youngest twin LOVES modeling and fashion. The oldest twin loves fashion. My son loves shoes more than anything. He has already placed on his vision board that one day a shoe will be named after him. I know that’s a big dream, but I inspire my children to dream big.

QSM: What can people look forward to during your reign? Sharonda: Every 30th of the month I will host “Face Time” with The Face of Queen Size Magazine, interviewing industry personnel on different subjects pertaining to the industry. Make-Over events that will cater to those that are less fortune. Mentorship with young and old. During my reign I’d like to continue to inspire within the plus community and outside the plus community.

QSM: Sounds like my son with the sneakers. But they could be into worse. Now wait a minute… I had no idea that you coauthored a book. When did this happen? Sharonda: Yes, the book released in March of 2018, the project was spearheaded by Nekisha Michelle Kee that started a year before the book release with 12 other women who wanted to inspire others. We shared private sacred details of the failure, self-destruction, and personal tragedies. Respective of our blemished past, what we had in common was the inner resolve and acceptance to use those defining moments as valuable life lessons, showing that in spite of everything we went through we overcame.

QSM: What advice do you give to people, young and old, who are looking to break into the modeling industry? Sharonda: Networking is HUGE in this industry. It’s okay to show yourself friendly, social media doesn’t really depict who you are; attend castings, plus size events, and expos. Keep in mind, you will have a lot of traveling at your own expense in the beginning! If you want to be taken seriously you must operate as a professional, make sure your every move is just that. Invest in yourself! Your photos, your training, seek professional mentorship. ITS EVERYTHING! Remember don’t get discouraged because in any industry you have to pay your dues first.

QSM: Where can we pick up the book? Sharonda: Diary of a Ready Woman, “I don’t look like what I’ve been through because my comeback is better than my setback” can be found via Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, and Ebay. QSM: Let’s talk a little bit about your reign as the 2019 Face of QSM. What made you enter? Sharonda: I must be honest, it took a lot of courage and faith to enter the 2019 Face of QSM contest. I entered because I had to know regardless of the outcome I didn’t give up and I tried my best.

QSM: We are super proud of you and we are honored to have you on our team. Please let everyone know where they can follow you and/or contact you for bookings. Sharonda: I can be reached via Instagram @ foreverfashion24_8 Face Book @Sharonda Grandberry Website Blog: www.pinkthronestyles.com Twitter: pinkthronestyle Final Thoughts: Research, invest in your dream, make friends and truly believe in yourself. Love yourself, have confidence, and you will get there if you don’t give up.

Lash Out Hello Gorgeous Queens Let’s get ready to Lash Out for 2019. It’s all about the lash, whether you are a girl who loves strip lashes, individual lashes or your lash extensions, it’s time to bat those beautiful eyes. As a working makeup artist I always encourage my clients to try lashes with their makeup application because I know how the lashes can complete and enhance their natural beauty. I often get asked the question of what’s the difference between the lash extensions, individual lashes and the strip lashes. I try to make sure that I educate my clients on the difference in the process. And often it is a client’s choice on what fits their lifestyle. I often recommend using human or mink lashes. I find that they are easier to work with and they can get multiple uses when they are properly cleaned and cared.

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2019 ISSUE

LASH OUT | LAWANDA “LALA FACES” SANYANG

Strip Human and Mink Lashes are applied with simple adhesive glue, such as Duo, that you can find in your drug store or beauty supply store. They are quick and simple and usually they are worn for one to two days and are easy to remove. Individual human lashes can also be purchased at your beauty supply store and applied with individual adhesive glue, however it does require more time in applying the lashes and you will have to refill the lashes within 1 to 2 weeks depending on your activity level. The benefit to using individual lashes you can cater them more to how thin or full want your lashes. The process is fairly simple but does require a little more time and patience in the application process. The final option to consider for Lashing Out in 2019 is Lash Extension. Now what you should know about lash extensions is that it is a semi-permanent process that can last six to eight weeks depending on how fast your natural lash may fall out. This may be suitable for someone who wants the “I woke up like this effect”, however it is more costly. This process should be always be done by a certified professional lash extensionist. The choice is yours, so let’s get Lashing! Love you Queens, Lala (Lawanda Sanyang)

TIPS TO KEEP CLOTHES LOOKING THEIR BEST IN WINTER

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2019 ISSUE

ARTICLE KEEP WINTER TITLE CLOTHES | BY AUTHOR LOOKING THEIR BEST | STATEPOINT

41

Winter is dirty, and unfortunately, all that slush, salt and mud coincides with the use of the delicate and expensive part of your wardrobe, from wool and cashmere sweaters and scarves to swanky party wear. But you can keep your clothes looking their best this winter, without breaking the bank at the dry cleaners, using the following tips: • Use garment bags: Get a head start on looking your best by ensuring your clothes look good before you even put them on for the day. Store suits, dresses, sweaters and other delicate items in garment bags to keep them safe from dust, moths and other closet hazards at home and when traveling. • Waterproof: On wet days, consider wearing waterproof shoe covers and tucking your pants into them to protect shoes, as well as the hems of your pants, from puddles and slush. • At-home dry cleaning: Slash your dry cleaning expenditures by up to 90 percent and skip the hassle and harsh chemicals by opting for at-home dry cleaning using your own dryer. With the right product, it will be an effective way to safely and thoroughly clean your special care clothes at home. For no fading, shrinking or stretching of your winter weather gear like scarves, hats, sweaters and more, consider using Dryel, a quick three step process which works in the convenience of your dryer in as little as 15 minutes. The heat of the dryer activates a cleaning solution to release a steam that removes body soils and odors from clothes, and a fabric protection bag maintains the optimal balance of cleaning agents and heat, allowing the steam to work thoroughly through the clothes, and then slowly vents the vapors out of the bag and dryer. • Act fast: When clothes get soiled, it’s important to act fast, particularly when dealing with salt and slush- related stains, which can be difficult to treat. The sooner you deal with stains, the greater the likelihood you’ll be able to restore your clothing to mint condition. • Landing area: Create a mud room. This can be just a few square feet of space by the entrance to your home and ideally located near the washer and dryer for quick transfer of clothes that need to be laundered. This is also the place to immediately remove boots and outerwear to avoid tracking mud into your home. This winter, protect your wardrobe from seasonal elements. New tools and old tricks can help your favorite winter gear survive the season in great condition.

THE BIG AND TALL OF IT| SIR ICON

47

sir icon ON THE BIG AND TALL OF IT

Just recently, I found myself on the phone with two different individuals at different times, but on the same day. Both individuals were inquiring about knowledge to start in the modeling and influencer industry. On the first call, I found myself overflowing and pouring knowledge into this sponge, but the latter call left me with this awful feeling of me talking to a brick wall. I did like lots of my mentors do and I processed it. Twenty-five dollars later for dinner and armed with a cup of peppermint tea, I started writing this article. As “Uncle Marco” to many models and influencers, there are plenty of “proud uncle” moments. However, my heart absolutely soars when I see models and influencers display kindness or gratitude completely unprompted. I cherish that moment they speak to a pioneer in the industry and sincerely thank them, or when they want to help new models or influencers in need. It makes Uncle feel proud! Then, we have those other ones! Pure dissonance! The lack of harmony in these type of individuals screams to me that unsuitable elements exist. They know it all or want to do it their way in an industry that has existed before they were even a sparkle in their mother’s eye. No one is perfect, but I must say it is not the way you want to be remembered in this industry nor start. Stop and listen, then absorb!

The cognitive component relates to the belief or knowledge of the person. This breakdown helped me tremendously understand my calls from that day and I hope it can help you. Models and influencers, when you find yourself in a less than ideal situation, it is best to look for the positives. Having the ability to deal with pain and adversity in this industry is fortitude. Living through that challenge allows you to recognize how much you have to be thankful for and provide growth in wisdom and character. Let’s be honest, when someone says something sweet to a pioneer, or drop some knowledge to the newbie, our heart is full. The act to show the appreciation of their creditability speaks volume. These moments are the ones we, the experienced and seasoned individuals, truly pray for, but through the maneuvering of this industry-the meltdowns, the angry words, the endless questioning (often demanding, lol) that happen-it is hard to know if the concept of gratitude got through. The secret in this industry? Stay patience. Keep up your selfconfidence. Remain disciplined. Always be grateful. That’s the Big and Tall of it!

Securing success in the modeling and influencer world is dependent on having the right attitude. This industry, perhaps more than any other, is filled with many misconceptions. My friend, Sharon Quinn, the Original Runway Diva, always says, “You have to know the game before you can play the game!” So yes, it is tough and filled with hard work, but the correct attitude can make the game a bit easier. If we look to the scientist about attitude, they will tell us about the three components of an attitude. The ABC’s, if you will. According to the Organizational Behavior Study Guide, they are Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive.

5 Simple ways to bring more color to your home

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2019 ISSUE

BRING MORE COLOR TO YOUR HOME| BRANDPOINT When you look at your home’s interiors, do you find yourself craving a refresh? If so, there’s no better time than the New Year to update your home with thoughtful design touches that embrace the power of color. Color is a key component of interior design and a useful tool for updating any space. What’s more, colors can convey many emotions - from calm to energetic - helping you create rooms that are perfectly reflective of your personal tastes. Even though the possibilities are endless, color can be intimidating. While you may like the use of color when you see it online, in magazines or other people’s homes, the uncertainty about how to incorporate it into your own home may hold you back. Fortunately, a few simple expert tips and tricks will have you using color like a pro in no time. Lifestyle expert and EasyCare Paint Brand Ambassador Camille Styles knows the power of color in transforming spaces from bland to beautiful. She uses color throughout her home to create rooms that are stylish and unique and you too can transform your favorite spaces by using her top tips to bring color into your home: Paint an accent wall: An accent wall commands attention and creates depth in the space, becoming the focal point of the room. The color you choose can be any hue that’s different from the other walls in the room. Whether it’s slightly different or drastically different is up to you. “I’m really into EasyCare Paint’s French Coast color,” says Styles. “Its strong blue hue makes a bold statement without being too harsh or overpowering.” Add a rug: Transform a room in an instant with a vibrant rug. It will add the perfect touch of color and can even be changed out seasonally to bring new hues into the space. A rug with a bright color or pattern can help create the illusion of more space so don’t be afraid to use one in a smaller room to open it up and make it more inviting. Start small: Many people are timid about color, so you can start small and incorporate a new, bold tone with items like a coffee table accessory or oversized pillows. You may find that your choice quickly becomes a favorite piece in your home, plus you’ll gain the confidence to add more color to other rooms, too. Introduce textures: Bringing in different colors and textures, such as a plush throw blanket or a woven basket, takes your space up a notch and adds another visual layer. Since these aren’t permanent fixtures in the room, they offer an easy way to play around with colors to see what works best in the space. Embrace the unexpected: Bring in a bold pop of color by doing something unexpected, like painting the trim instead of the wall. “Black can take a room up a notch with its rich tone. “EasyCare Paint’s Crow color will really wow your guests whenever you entertain,” says Styles. Whether you’re looking to do a quick update or a complete interior design overhaul, color makes a room more dynamic and energized. From simple décor pieces to bolder accent walls, bringing color into your home is a great way to refresh in the New Year.
