FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the March 2021 issue of Queen Size Magazine. I recently joined Clubhouse and I must say that I love it. In the beginning I was one of those people that talked crap about it (jokingly though) because I didn’t have an iPhone and couldn’t join in on the fun. But I figured out how to make it happen. My point in saying this is when you run a business you have to learn how to find different avenues of promoting yourself, especially during these times. So if you are reading this and you are on Clubhouse, give us a follow @queensizemag. We promise to follow back. As with every issue, I truly thank each and every person that had a hand in making Queen Size Magazine possible. And on behalf of myself and Queen Size Magazine, I would like to thank all of our readers; without you we would not still be here. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

FOODS THAT FUEL YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM |BRANDPOINT

3 SURPRISING FOODS THAT FUEL YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM Cold and flu season, combined with an ongoing pandemic, is motivating many Americans to do everything possible to support immune health. Fortunately, simple lifestyle habits, like a healthy diet, can make a big difference in strengthening the body’s defense system. But what foods are best - and why? When it comes to immune-boosting foods, most people immediately turn to orange juice for a quick fix of vitamin C. “While it is true that citrus fruit helps support the immune system, there are many other foods that offer an impressive profile of nutrients believed to maintain strong immunity,” says registered dietitian Sheri Kasper. Here are three surprising, dietitian-recommended foods that can help ward off illness this cold and flu season.

1. FARMED SALMON Farmed salmon offers outstanding nutrition that can help protect against everything from heart disease to depression. Specifically, farmed salmon supports the immune system thanks to two key nutrients that are uncommon in many other foods: vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. While vitamin D is often connected to bone health, emerging research out of Boston University suggests that it may also be vital to proper immune function. Few foods are naturally high in vitamin D, but a serving of farmed salmon offers nearly one-third of daily recommended needs. Omega-3 fatty acids, abundantly found in farmed salmon, are highly anti-inflammatory and support the immune system by reducing chronic inflammation. Kasper recommends choosing farmed salmon from Chile because it is sustainably raised, high in omega-3 fats and does not contain antibiotics or mercury.

2. YOGURT

healthy balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut is also believed to boost the immune system. “Most people do not realize that about 70 percent of your body’s immune system is in your gut,” says Kasper. In addition to containing probiotics, yogurt is also one of the few foods that is almost always fortified with vitamin D, which offers additional immune support. Look for yogurt labeled as containing “Live and Active Cultures” and steer clear of yogurt that contains a lot of added sugar. Try plain yogurt and sweeten by adding fresh fruit and a small drizzle of honey.

3. RED BELL PEPPERS Red bell peppers are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support the immune system. One example is vitamin C, which encourages the production of the white blood cells that are responsible for defending the body against pathogens. Red bell peppers contain almost three times more vitamin C than oranges. They are also loaded with vitamin A and the antioxidant beta-carotene, which can be converted to vitamin A in the body, when needed. Vitamin A is important in maintaining the natural mucus barriers located in the eyes, gut and other parts of the body. These barriers are designed to trap bacteria and are essential to optimal immunity. Be sure to choose red peppers because they have significantly more vitamin A, vitamin C and beta-carotene compared to green bell peppers. While a healthy diet cannot prevent seasonal colds, the flu or other viral illnesses, a combination of the right foods, plenty of sleep, regular exercise and a balanced lifestyle will arm your body’s defenses and may help minimize the length and severity of illness. For more information about salmon and wellness, visit chileansalmon.org.

Yogurt and other fermented foods contain healthy bacteria called probiotics. Probiotics are well-known for supporting digestive or “gut” health by preventing overgrowth of bad bacteria. But maintaining a

cocktail sauce for dipping or smoked salmon and herbed cream cheese with sliced baguettes for a classy date night. You can take your taste buds on a trip to the Mediterranean by complementing a spread of olives, artichokes and cherry tomatoes with deliciously salty sardines or anchovies - or even a smoked fish dip. It’s tons of fun to customize your offering in unconventional ways - particularly when it involves adding seafood to the mix.

Baked seafood dishes

It all started with the bagel, and now the popular seasoning that mixes poppy seeds, sesame seeds, onion and garlic is being used in new and inventive ways. You can buy the seasoning to sprinkle on favorite dishes, but perhaps where these flavors really shine is when they’re combined with delicious seafood such as Everything Bagel Butterfly Shrimp from SeaPak.

Want a satisfying crowd-pleaser for dinner? Baked seafood dishes are surging in popularity and are easy to make at home. Thanks to their low-maintenance nature, casseroles, lasagnas and oven-to-table recipes are getting the seafood treatment from home cooks everywhere.

These crispy butterfly shrimp are covered in everything bagel seasoning and paired with a cool cream cheese chive dipping sauce. It’s specially designed for conventional ovens, toaster ovens and air fryers, so you get to indulge in a delicious new food craze without extensive kitchen time. Whether it’s a savory snack or a scrumptious main course, Everything Bagel Butterfly Shrimp are versatile and delicious. Creative “sea-cuterie” boards Traditional charcuterie boards have been around for centuries, featuring classics such as cured meats, olives, pickled vegetables, crackers and nuts. However, being at home has inspired people to take their charcuterie to new heights and many seafood lovers are designing platters around their favorite protein: seafood. Known by some as “sea-cuterie,” this new take on the classic shared appetizer can feature shrimp and

Many types of fish bake well and are incredible paired with breading or spices and sauce. Salmon with ginger? Stuffed sole with breadcrumbs? Seafood and pasta are an unforgettable dynamic duo. Baked seafood recipes, like this fan-favorite parmesan shrimp ziti bake, are typically simple, so why not make extra? Leftovers tend to reheat well, and one baking session can provide you with lunches all week long. Seafood remixes We’ve all had to get a little more creative in the kitchen this year. For a twist on the traditional, try swapping the protein in your favorite dishes for salmon, shrimp or your favorite kind of seafood. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can recreate an entire land-based dish by reimagining it. Tired: Bacon-wrapped sausage bites. Wired: Seaweedwrapped cod nuggets. What sea-inspired cuisine will you whip up tonight?

PINK THRONE STYLES: WHAT’S YOUR STYLE | QSM

QSM: Sharonda, welcome back. We have had the pleasure of featuring you and some of your work several times. This time we’d love to talk to you about your passion for styling. Let’s talk modeling for a minute. What got you into modeling? Sharonda: I am a veteran. I have served as a government employee in both public and private sectors for over 20 years. I found myself in a different space and needed to do something that released my passion for fashion. I have always loved fashion, what better way to get closer to what I love. Modeling was the platform or gateway per say that allowed me to transition into styling. I gained a ton of experience. I curated content to show my styling capabilities. The networking experience within modeling gave me the courage to own my own lane and help other women along the way. QSM: As a model, have you always styled yourself for your photoshoots? Sharonda: When I first started modeling I collaborated with Shelia Lee of UniquelyU Fashions to create my first photo shoot. Since then I have always styled myself for shoots. I don’t mind hiring someone for a styling session but most of the time, I already know what I want.

23

QSM: When did you fall in love with styling? Sharonda: Styling has always been on my mind. Prior to modeling I didn’t feel as though I had the courage to move into styling. I love to see how an outfit can transform from the outside in. We are taught that transformation is from the inside out. I’d agree to a certain extent but in my personal opinion there’s nothing like a woman who feels great about how she looks. Sometimes, it’s just the thing to jumpstart an internal shift, sort of like a “pick me up”. QSM: I have always loved that you are never afraid to mix patterns and colors that most wouldn’t dare. Can you share a styling session where you mixed colors or patterns that had you second guess yourself, but was happy end the end? Sharonda: I am pretty open when it comes to mixing patterns, actually it’s my FAVORITE thing to do. I was nervous once when I did stripes and cheetah print. The look was a bold move but it turned out to be great. I was able to tone the print down and mold the look with a solid blazer. Overall I was very pleased with the outcome.

QSM: Where do you pull your inspiration from? Sharonda: Usually from magazines, the internet, and latest trends. I will usually put a look together in my head, search for inspiration and then add my own twist. QSM: What exactly is Phun Phunky Phasion styles? Sharonda: I believe that fashion should be fun, exciting, and intriguing. Phun Phunky Phasion is just that. Of course, I cater to all women no matter their style but if allowed to step out the box and have fun, we are going to do the boldest looks. QSM: You and I have talked about this, but let’s revisit the discussion for everyone else. Why is it so important for professionals to have image consulting? Sharonda? Image consulting enhances one’s brand. First impressions are very important whether we believe so or not. Your entire personal brand, business and possibly your livelihood, is based on your image, thus first impressions are vital. Defined image consulting focuses on the impact a person makes both personal and professional. It combines marketing and knowledge of fashion to improve an individual’s appearance, behavior, communication, and digital footprint. Image consultants help their clients build strong visual and personal brands through impression management. Additionally, image consultants can help improve or fine tune behavioral and communication skills. Personally, I ensure that the client is well rounded. I offer self-affirmations to each of my clients and assign homework so that once our session is complete, the work continues. It’s not just about someone’s overall look, it’s also about how they show up for themselves as well. QSM: Congrats on making PINK THRONE STYLES, LLC official. I was so proud to hear the news. What can people expect when they hire you for styling sessions? Sharonda: Thank you very much! After the consultation is booked a link for my personal styling questionnaire is sent. During the consultation, I gain a better understanding of the clients’ needs. I address any questions or concerns. We schedule a second cost -free call at a later date so that I can offer different styling options. Once the offer that best suits the client is selected, I get to work. QSM: How do you find your clients? Sharonda: The majority of my clients came via referral basis but there’s always that one or two that find me via pinterest, my model website, or alignable. QSM: You don’t only style for magazine shoots correct? Sharonda: No, Pink Throne Styles is a full-service

image consulting agency. Styling services consisting of everyday looks, after 5 attire, vacation, special occasions, or an all-out glam experience. QSM: When I talk to people about styling for shoots, they are opposed to the idea because they said it is too expensive. Is that true or false? Sharonda: I believe it depends on individual needs or goals. When I started modeling, I needed content to post for my brand. I had to invest in order for my brand to grow. A celebrity stylist would be higher priced of course because of their years of experience and client database. If I had to sum it up, the higher you climb up the professional ladder the more your salary increases. QSM: I think the whole world knows by now that your favorite color is Pink. Lol. Does your husband and your son ever get tired of the Pink? Sharonda: lol, yes I think the world knows by now. They haven’t expressed their dislike as of yet but I do know it makes shopping for me during my birthday and holidays a lot easier. QSM: How about your daughters? Are they also into fashion? Sharonda: The twins both love fashion although their expression is different. One daughter is like myself and isn’t afraid to try new things. While the other, prefers a laid back yet stylish approach. QSM: In addition to being an Army Veteran, a wife, a mother of three, having a full time job, being a model and stylist. You also just started another venture. Can you tell us about it? Sharonda: Yes, I recently started a joint venture with a business partner. Michelle Timmons and I make up M&S Consults. M&S consults has 20+ years of Government Contracting experience and we absolutely believe in superior customer service, quality product (s) and meeting your business needs. We offer consulting services to small businesses looking to gain knowledge within government contracting. We believe our capabilities and expertise will take your business to the next level. At M & S Consults, we combine our insights and skills to transform your processes and strategies, and in turn, your company. We can be found via https://www.mandsconsults.com/ QSM: Anything else you want to add about yourself? Any final thoughts? Sharonda: I am thoroughly excited about completely venturing into what I have ALWAYS aimed for since the beginning, fashion styling is the true heart of Sharonda Grandberry. I want to create one on one experiences causing women to love and embrace everything about themselves.

A Skin Care Expert Weighs in: Take Care of Your Scalp

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCALP | STATEPOINT

When it comes to your skin and hair care routine, it can be all too easy to forget the scalp. After time though, this neglect can take a toll on the health of your hair, according to experts. “Think of your scalp as an extension of your skin from your face. If you put too much product on your face, your skin cannot breathe. The same is true for the scalp and hair follicles. Taking proper care of your scalp is important in preventing follicles from clogging and also avoids hair getting weighed down from too much product buildup,” says Dr. Rocio Rivera, Ph.D. The Problem Scalp buildup is caused by a number of factors, many of which are unfortunately beyond your control or simply caused by your everyday routine. These include environmental factors, dead skin cells that don’t shed quickly enough, sweat, sebum and hair care products. Over time, scalp buildup can cause issues like itching, shedding and clogged follicles, ultimately compromising healthy hair growth and your comfort. The Solution While you’re not about to ditch your sweat session or your favorite hair care products, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to live with scalp buildup. One important thing to consider is the frequency you shampoo your hair. While the right frequency will vary per head of hair, you can experiment

29

until you strike the right balance for you. Be sure to always rinse shampoo out of your hair thoroughly with cool water during each wash. You may also want to incorporate a detox solution into your routine in order to deeply purify and cleanse the scalp of dirt, product buildup and oil, without stripping hair. To do so, consider new solutions like the EverPure Scalp Care + Detox system from L’Oréal Paris, which is recommended for twice a week use. Containing menthol and neem leaf extract, it leaves the scalp feeling fresh for 24 hours, and leaves hair healthy-looking, bouncy and soft. If you have color-treated hair, this can be an especially worthy option to consider, as this sulfate-free, paraben-free solution is color safe. “A sulfate-free shampoo is a great option to prevent scalp discomfort. The new system from L’Oréal Paris is quite effective and affordable. The products cleanse and relieve the scalp of excess dirt, product buildup, flakes and oils without stripping the hair. Plus, it’s been validated by hair colorists, so it is safe on your color-treated hair too,” says Dr. Rivera. Finally, for ultimate scalp and hair health, try adopting a diet that includes nutrients like omega 3 fatty acids and biotin. Don’t let life take its toll on your scalp. By counteracting the effects of buildup, you can help restore the health of your scalp and locks.

Kiesha knows that hard work and dedication pays off. She will continue to apply for casting calls and produce quality images. She believes modeling is more than putting on clothes, posting images, or walking the runway. In her opinion, modeling is painting the picture that will guide others in making decisions on what to wear. People connect to what the model is wearing, and they pursue what is being portrayed. The chain that connects Kiesha’s desire is driven by her passion to connect with women of all ages to help identify and unlock their unlimited potential, love themselves unconditionally, and live their very best lives. Though her passion, Kiesha love for modeling cannot compare to her greatest joy (s): her sons and giving back. Kiesha is excited about her future in modeling and cannot wait to make connections within the industry.

Groundbreakers in Pageantry: Theresa Randolph and Natasha Monique Coleman Beauty pageants have been around since the 1800s. Pageantry began as a form of entertainment in which Islamic rulers would find the prettiest wife in their harem but evolved to awarding scholarships for young women to pursue their education. Pageantry continued to grow, as the pageant contestant was not just beautiful and intelligent, but talented, old, young, straight size, plus size…the list continues.

by Dr. Janelle “The Curvy Doc” Simmons

Theresa Randolph and Natasha Monique Coleman are veterans in the plus size pageant industry, serving as CEOs of their respective pageant systems. Together, they have served a total of 47 years, helping hundreds of women (me included). These ladies share their experiences as innovators in the industry.

Natasha Monique Coleman is a veteran in the pageant, modeling and beauty industry. She was named Executive Director of Royal Productions, LLC in 2013 by founder Angela B. Howell, but took ownership in 2017 after Howell’s untimely passing. In her new role, Natasha changed the name to Royal Productions and Events by Natasha Monique, LLC. and increased the number of pageants under the system to seven and changed one previous system from a national pageant to an international pageant. Royal Production’s first pageant (which just celebrated 15 years) was the American Beauties Plus Pageant, and then the American Beauties National (for women size 0-12), the Prevailing Queens Pageant (for past queens of Royal Productions), virtual pageant Classic Beauties International, and the National Sorority Pageant (in its inaugural year) followed. Natasha has appeared on national talk shows such as Dr. Oz and nationally published magazines such as Essence Magazine and Women’s World Magazine article about the importance of staying active at any size. When not organizing pageants, Natasha works as a Senior Health Educator with the Florida Department of Health and is a lifestyle coach for the National Diabetes Prevention Program. GROUNDBREAKERS IN PAGEANTRY | JANELLE SIMMONS

QSM: Can you talk about your pageant journey? How did you get started? Natasha: My pageant journey started all the way back in 2006 and competed in another plus size pageant in Texas. It was great to finally meet with women who were making such a difference in their communities as I was attempting to do. I loved to hear about all the different platforms and see all the beautiful women from all over the nation. I was blessed to 3rd in my first pageant but of course I was disappointed I didn’t win. I looked into other pageant systems and I was very successful. I then stumbled upon American Beauties Plus. When I competed in 2008, I won my division, talent, spokesmodel and most photogenic. I loved the system and the director and decided to make it my pageant home. After several years of work and dedication I was named National Executive Director by then owner and my dear friend, Angela Howell. She later passed the next year and I became owner of Royal Productions which was renamed June 2017 to Royal Productions and Events by N.M. And the rest is herstory. :) QSM: What would you say has been your biggest achievement in pageantry? Natasha: I have won several national pageant titles, but I would say my biggest achievement was being named the 2017 Best National Pageant Director by Pageant Planet. It was based solely on nominations and I was beyond humbled and grateful. QSM: Do you think major pageants (Miss America, Miss Universe) will ever allow plus size women to compete? Why? Why not? Natasha: I do feel mainstream pageants will allow plus size women to compete and those thoughts are based on the previous changes that they have already put in place. But I feel like secondary pageant like the ones in my pageant enterprise are making such a name for themselves that the desire to have the traditional name is just not as important as the experience. QSM: What would you tell someone looking to explore pageantry, especially those who are worried about their physical appearance? Natasha: I would tell someone looking to explore pageantry to just do it. Pageants have so many layers, from the fashion to community service or even the sisterhood. I feel like most women can find at least one thing she would be able to master in pageantry.

and makeup are so advanced now and it’s so many more custom designers now to design exactly what the Queen is looking for. I’m honestly blown away about those advancements. QSM: Royal Productions recently celebrated 15 years of the American Beauties Plus Pageant. What’s the secret to the longevity of the pageant? Natasha: I would say the secret of longevity with our system is pushing past the barriers. It’s been so many times that huge obstacles come in the way and the pageant could have been called off, but we just did it anyway. It’s important to show the women competing that adversity is everywhere, but a Queen is to serve her people. Pushing past myself and my personal situations and making sure the pageant moves forward shows the women competing that they are important to me as well. And I would also like to brag on the true sisterhood that Royal Productions keeps in place. QSM: What’s next for Royal Productions? Natasha: Well, the next thing for Royal Productions is two more separate pageants being added to the enterprise. We are excited about this and although we have so much going on, we feel the time is now. Sometimes you work with what you have and pick up what you need along the way. Royal Productions has some incredible women who are versed in pageantry and putting some familiar faces in some upper-level positions is important to me. This is not the Natasha Monique show. I am eager to show the gifts and talents of the staff to really make these systems stand out. All of our systems have a direct interest group and I think that makes our sisterhood bond tighter. QSM: What kind of legacy would you like to leave in pageantry? Natasha: I would like to leave the legacy of the importance of hard work in community and platform involvement. Platforms are extremely important in Royal Productions and Event by N.M but so much different than other systems. I want our queens to be subject matter experts in their platforms not just a spokesperson. Personal attachment to your platform I feel is necessary and I would like to be known for the work I’ve put into my platform, which is to highlight women in their sphere of influence which is basically their platform. So annually I am indulging in my own personal platform. I’m very thankful for this opportunity.

QSM: How has pageantry changed from when you first started? Natasha: I would say that more emphasis has been put on that overall polished look than it was in my day. Hair

Groundbreakers in Pageantry: Theresa Randolph and Natasha Monique Coleman by Dr. Janelle “The Curvy Doc” Simmons

A trailblazer and trendsetter, Ms. Theresa “Sparkle” Randolph has carved out her own unique career niche since she began. Affectionately known as “Ms. Theresa,” she began her career as an Ebony Fashion Fair hopeful. The New Jersey native (born and raised in East Orange and now a Newark resident) created and has produced the wildly popular Ms. Full-Figured USA Pageant and has been going strong with her glittering pageants for the past 32 years, making her one of the most successful pageant promoters on the scene. A full-figured model and beauty queen herself, Ms. Theresa crafts the pageants into the most spectacular extravaganzas. Several of Ms. Theresa’s stand-out pageant ladies have gone on to rewarding careers in the full-figured fashion and modeling industry. Ms. Theresa has been a fashion show commentator and tv show host, having hosted the cable favorite “Image TV” for several years. Her newest “hat” is that of being an author, with the 2014 release of her first book, Power of the Plus: The Full-Figured Blueprint to Pageants, Fashion Shows & Modeling Careers. Ms. Theresa has also branched her popular pageants out regionally, to states such as New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, D.M.V., Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, Alabama, Virginia, Wisconsin, Georgia, the Caribbean, as well as the Tristate division, and others to be added. Theresa Randolph CEO, Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A. Brand

In addition, Ms. Theresa is a successful event promoter, as well as the Banquet Director of Special Events at Newark, New Jersey’s Robert Treat Hotel. She has been recognized in many states, receiving the key to the city. This “hostess with the mostess” has also captivated audiences while hosting live events featuring celebrities and performing as the honorary ringmaster for the famed UniverSoul Circus in Newark, New Jersey. She has graced stages big and small, undoubtedly earning her other nickname “Queen of New Jersey.” She and her full-figured pageants, along with all of her other outstanding undertakings, are her glittering testaments to diversity in beauty and business.

GROUNDBREAKERS IN PAGEANTRY | JANELLE SIMMONS

QSM: Can you talk about your pageant journey? How did you get started? Theresa: The Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A. brand started in 1989 in Newark, New Jersey. I, along with Jackie Epps, designer of Gemz Couture had a vision. My mother Verrell Randolph and Father Josh Randolph helped mold the vision. At first, we didn’t think women of a certain size would be interested. We put up posters in Downtown Newark, thumbtacked flyers in every supermarket and walked the malls to give out flyers. Let’s not forget the night life was amazing and clubs were filled with pretty full-figured women. I had a designer friend that specialized in plus size garments, and the rest is history. At our first audition, 114 women showed up to audition. QSM: What would you say has been your biggest achievement in pageantry? Theresa: One of my greatest achievements is receiving the key to the city of Newark, New Jersey and Gonzales, Louisiana, a Proclamation from New York, and a resolution from New Jersey.

QSM: How has pageantry changed from when you first started? Theresa: Pageantry has opened up to all shapes and sizes over the last fifteen years. I highly recommend one investigates and do their research on the different pageantry systems. QSM: You are the CEO of the longest running plus pageant system. What’s the secret to the longevity of the Ms. Full-Figured USA brand? Theresa: The Ms. Full-Figured U.S.A brand is 32yrs old. We started as an urban based pageantry system then we started to welcome everyone as we became popular in the full-figured community. What has kept us going is the fact that we count the prize money out to the winners in front of the entire audience. We give away $3,000-$5,000 in cash on the spot, and the audience loves it! Though based in New Jersey, we ventured out to numerous states and regions.

QSM: Do you think major pageants (Miss America, Miss Universe) will ever allow plus size women to compete? Why? Why not? Theresa: I’m a trend setter and a trail blazer. If the mainstream pageant adds Full-Figured women that would be nice however we have our own. Everything is not for everyone. Statically the average size is a 14 here in America. The plus size industry is booming. Full-Figured women are here to stay.

QSM: What are you working on next? Theresa: The next project I’m working on is QueenCon, LLC. In October 2022, we will have the pageant of all pageants. Fifteen or more pageant systems will compete for Ms. Universal Full-Figured to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. We are in our early stages with this project but its looking amazing. My goal in the next 5 years is to have a pageant in almost every state. It’s hard work but it gets greater later. Our motto is “Size Has No Barrier on Beauty “.

QSM: What would you tell someone looking to explore pageantry, especially those who are worried about their physical appearance? Theresa: Every pageant is different, so do your research! Cost will be connected to preparing for a pageant so get ready to have a few fundraisers. It also helps to promote the pageant. Make sure the pageant stands for something or you will fall for anything. Remember to have fun. Pageants are an extra activity in your life. It’s not mandatory, so have lots of fun!

QSM: What kind of legacy would you like to leave in pageantry? Theresa: The legacy I would like to leave is that everyone remembers my name and the brand. Remember it wasn’t easy getting to where we are. I have an amazing team and we will continue to grow. I want my legacy to be remembered for glitz and glamor gowns and a huge audience at every pageant, prizes given on the spot, and that our pageant is fair. The judges are professionals, and the contestants work hard and enjoy every minute.

3 Pandemic Travel Trends That May Stick Around WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2021 ISSUE

PANDEMIC TRAVEL | FAMILY FEATURES COVID-19 has challenged families in different ways, and many had to cancel or reschedule trips during the pandemic due to travel restrictions, which meant missing out on quality time with loved ones and the mental health and self-care benefits of going on vacation. Although 61% of families had a trip canceled due to the pandemic in 2020, travel is still top of mind as 82% of families already have travel plans in mind for 2021, according to the 2021 Vrbo Trend Report. The report, which includes vacation rental marketplace data as well as survey data from family travelers, also revealed some travel habits that arose during the pandemic are likely to remain popular this year. “Let’s face it, the pandemic makes it tough to predict what travel will look like in 2021,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “That’s why we combined search and demand trends with a first-of-its-kind traveler survey of U.S. families. The combination gives us the most accurate picture possible of the plans families are making.” Consider these pandemic-era trends as you make your vacation plans moving forward: Staying in the Driver’s Seat With travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines in place throughout much of 2020, many families opted to avoid flying and visiting crowded places by instead jumping in the car to hit the open road. This trend is likely to continue in 2021 with 59% of families saying they are more likely to drive instead of fly on their next trip. A change of scenery can be refreshing and motivating after staring at the same four walls in your home, so consider taking a road trip and exploring a new destination, even if it’s just down the road from home.

49

Mixing Work and Play Many people were forced to adapt to working from home or facilitating e-learning for their children due to COVID-19. While turning homes into makeshift offices or classrooms wasn’t an easy task for many families, the schedule flexibility provided by the remote setup allowed for the rise of the “flexcation” – mixing vacation time with virtual work and school. In fact, 1 in 3 families surveyed said they were able to travel because they were working from home, and 52% of those who took a flexcation during the pandemic found the experience refreshing with 67% saying they would do it again. Another benefit of flexcations is experiencing amenities you may not have access to at home. Consider some of Vrbo’s most sought-after amenities and vacation spots when planning your next getaway: • Splash in the sun in Cape Coral, Florida where 92% of vacation rentals have pools. • Cook over an open fire in Sevierville, Tennessee, where barbecue grills are included at 87% of vacation homes. • Cozy up by the fire with a book and some hot chocolate in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where fireplaces are an amenity offered in 87% of vacation rentals. Seeking Wide Open Spaces Many travelers gravitate toward vacationing in peaceful and picturesque destinations, and the open sky, fresh air and scenic views may be even more appealing amid the pandemic. According to the report, 61% of U.S. families said they are more likely to visit an outdoorsy destination than an urban one and 54% are more likely to head to a national park than an amusement park. Find more ideas for planning your next vacation – or flexcation – along with the full Trend Report at vrbo.com.

4 WAYS TO UPLIFT SMALL BUSINESSES IN YOUR COMMUNITY

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|MARCH 2021 ISSUE

UPLIFT SMALL BUSINESSES | STATEPOINT

With nearly half of all Americans employed by a small business, these establishments need our support more than ever. According to the latest Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index, 46 percent of business owners surveyed have seen a drop in revenue over the past 12 months, with some entrepreneurs seeing even more severe impact. “Small businesses are at the heart of our communities and the key to millions of jobs,” says Steve Troutner, head of Small Business, Wells Fargo. “Keeping spending dollars in local communities is an impactful way to rally around small business owners.” Wells Fargo is sharing four ways to uplift small businesses near you: 1. Shop local. While one-stop shopping on leading e-commerce sites can be tempting, the simple act of purchasing something from your favorite local retailer can go a long way in keeping business afloat and money in your community. Returning or exchanging gifts? Ask for store credit instead of cash. It helps keep money with a small business and makes their cash flow more stable. Many shops have safety measures in place, such as limiting occupancy or offering contactless pick-up. 2. Eat local. Support your neighbors by dining at locally-owned establishments. Getting takeout or having food delivered? Order directly from the restaurant rather than through third-party sites that take a cut. When it comes to food shopping, opt for neighborhood grocers, which often carry produce from small family-owned farms and other locallysourced goods. Many offer the same curbside

51

pickup and delivery options as major chains. 3. Uplift diverse-owned businesses. Keep in mind that minority- and women-owned businesses have been hard hit by COVID-19. Many are counting on your patronage to survive. To help entrepreneurs stay open and support local jobs, Wells Fargo is deploying approximately $400 million from its Open for Business Fund to nonprofits serving small businesses. The initiative focuses on increasing access to training and flexible capital that businesses can use for rent, utilities, payroll and other business needs. If you are a business owner looking for assistance and resources, visit wellsfargo. com/shoplocal to learn more. 4. Shine a light on your favorite business. Whether it’s expanding outdoor patios and installing heat lamps or updating tech to facilitate contactless checkout, small businesses have had to get creative to stay relevant. One simple way of supporting businesses as they make these changes is to follow them on social media and give positive reviews on websites like Yelp. As part of its “Many hearts. One community” campaign, Wells Fargo is highlighting the determination, resilience and creativity that so many small business have shown this past year. “Community has meant everything to me,” says Kadijatu Ahene, owner of Dija’s Touch Designs, which benefitted from Wells Fargo and Local Initiatives Support Corporation working together. “The challenges we’re dealing with have brought us closer. Whether its friends and neighbors checking on me and my girls, delivering food and more, COVID has reminded us that we need each other to move forward in unity.”
